As an Italian I just love your channel, it showcases the simplicity and elegance of the Spanish gastronomic tradition. much like ours, it is about elevating the humble to the sublime, and you do it brillianty. There is an honesty to Spanish cuisine that I just adore and it is very captivating in its elegant simplicity . This is a great evolution of a simple russian salad. I'm going to make it tomorrow. We Italians often make a simple russian salad of potato, carrots and peas, bound in fresh maionaisse with a little white pepper and a tiny squeeze of lemon juice just to cut the richness of the maionaisse. This looks like the next level, different techniques and also the Ali oli i think will bring a beautiful fragrance and provide that 'cut" through the richness of the maionaisse. It really is "Spain on a fork!" I'll let you know how it goes.
Steaming the peas while boiling the eggs is a great idea. I wouldn't have thought of placing the sieve over the saucepan. I'll have to try it. The potato salad looks so tasty, especially for summer. 😋
Here’s a radical idea - boil the eggs along with the potatoes and steam the peas briefly on the same pan! Less gas used and one less pot to wash. It’s unorthodox to boil eggs along with other things, seems a bit iffy them having come out of a hen’s bum, but I have done it once or twice and didn’t notice anything unpleasant.
My version has tuna canned in olive oil (bonito del Norte en aceite de oliva), olives stuffed with pimentos, artichokes, as well as the other ingredients mentioned in the video except the garlic. I add some of the olive juice to the Mayo and grated onion or shallot instead of garlic. I do chill the potatoes and all of the ingredients first. Really delicious and refreshing and a complete meal by its own. If you make your own mayonnaise (salsa mahonesa) with olive oil it is even better. Tuna as well as boiled eggs and peas and carrots and of course boiled potatoes are the classic ingredients. Shrimp or any other seafood will not taste as good. This salad is very common and it is a classic summer dish in Spain although it can be prepared any time of the year. It can also be served warm instead of chilled. Celery is not used in this salad.

Hi, I'm Spanish, and I advise you to try the Murcian version of the Russian salad. It is this same recipe but replacing the peas with finely chopped pickles and olives. It is the best version of the Russian salad.
Wow this looks way more interesting than American potato salad, and healthier, fresher, and also simple to make. I have LOVED all your recipes I've tried so far and have told others about your site.
I was fortunate enough to visit Seville back in April '23 and sampled many different tapas. Other than the jamon Iberico, the ensaladilla Rusa was the most delicious tapa I tried. This looks like a great recipe, but I am yearning for the variety that includes tuna. So delicious! I'm glad I discovered your channel! I'm no cook, bu I'm hoping to roughly duplicate my tapas experiences at home. 🙂

Hi Albert, Thanks for sharing a new twist on potato salad. I am not a fan of mayo, so I will try it with sour cream instead. I bet it will be equally as good!
No, I’m sorry, but no. This is Russian salad, it’s served in Turkey as well under the name “Amerikan salatası”. When I lived there, I LOLed at the name because, I’m from the South, and it tastes nothing like any potato salad I’ve had here. Then my Turkish friend explained it’s called American salad due to Turkey’s Red Scare, and the older generations knew it as “Rus salatası”. You will be sorely disappointed if you make this thinking it tastes anything like Southern potato salad. Put it this way, the only way I would eat it in Turkey is if it was served at my work.
Hi Albert @ Spain On A Fork please send some heat or warmth up to South Africa as we are freezing here in Winter at temperature -3 and during the day only 6 thank you so much for sharing your beautiful delicious yummy Potato 🥔 🥗 Salad recipe and video 👍👍😀😀🌹🌹❤️❤️👍👍🥗🥗🥔🥔👍👍❤️❤️
This is called “amerikan salatası” in Turkey, even though it’s nothing like potato salad in the US, even though it’s Russian. The name was changed from Russian salad (Rus salatası) to American salad due to the Cold War and Turkey’s internal Red Scare (authors like Nâzım Hikmet were jailed for having communist views). Anyhow, American potato salad has potatoes, hard boiled eggs, celery, pickle relish, mustard and Mayo, at least that’s how my grandma made it, and how I make it.
I knew there was something I thought was missing, though it's a very nice-looking salad as is. Always interested in other people's potato salads -- everyone has a variant, and although I prefer celery to carrots in a salad, I do like the look of this. Worth a try.
We Romanians have the same dish called "Salata de boeuf" (beef salad). We either stole it from our crazy Slavic neighbors or from Russia during the Russo-Ottoman war. Russia got back at us by stealing our gold reserves that year and then they stole Spain's gold reserves in the mid 1930's. Let's just enjoy the salad. Forget those... fine people. (Had to mention, I do apologize.)

The peas thaw super quick and keeping that salad cool is important. I never steam them, i put them in frozen.
