How a Pre-Purchase Inspection saved me $10,000 from 1000 miles away

  • 3 Porsche Boxster S Prepurchase Inspections... Why a car looked good but had $10,000 in flaws. How paint thickness readings saved the day. Why'd I walk away from a clean car with a clean report. And what did I buy? Plus, using the PPI side by side with the CarFax to see a bigger pic. Also, some laughs, or at least chuckles. LOL

I bought my 2013 981 manual Boxster in 2015, and have been daily it since then. The car still have factory warranty when I got it, there were a couple of small repairs been done which were all covered by the warranty. I do all the annual maintenance work myself, if you decide to go my route, I strongly recommend get your parts from FCP euro, they have life time replacement warranty on everything they sell (read their website, you’ll be surprised). I also live in Midwest, winter tire is a must, the summer tire is going to wrack your car on a snowy/icy road. I have Michelin alpine pa4 mounted on its own dedicated rims, and swap them with Michelin PS4s(bought in 2018, car come with pss). All season tires is getting much better these years, you can get away with a Michelin cross-climate if you are on a budget. The infotainment system is outdated for these 981s, I recently add a CarPlay module to the car, it makes the car feels so modern. If you ever wants to get an after market exhaust, get something with a valve which can make itself quieter with a click of button

Great vid again! Summer tires do work in the winter, BUT, they're solid as a rock and give an extremely rough ride in temps under 40F. My experience.

I found that in wet but not ice and in very cold without snow they are a disaster for stopping hard and for turning. Now we need a cold spell to try the all seasons to be sure I'm being fair.

absolutely, I screwed this up. Thankfully, it only cost me $1K in tires.....I did do carfax reporting and pretty detailed inspection, BUT I should've insisted a Porsche pre-inspection. This guy is right, and I was wrong. After a thorough inspection by Porsche after the fact....I needed 2 front tires and that was it. The rest of the car was clean, clear and in great shape, no paint defects or issues.

Should have sought out a 3rd party Porsche Dealership to Perform the PPI. Go to the Porsche North America for a full description of the inspection protocol. Also, "Excellence Magazine" provides a Porsche annual update on models as well as separate tech review.

Help me understand these two things. First, I saw the CPO page & an "additional information" page that had acronyms like TSI & PTI, & the dealer gave me the 111 point check document with the car. There is something more you're talking about? Second, I got mine from Porsche Jacksonville (FL, USA). I should/could have asked them to ship it to another Porsche dealer for a 3rd party PPI? Like to Atlanta or Palm Beach or Miami? Thx

First of all as I read your post it appears that the car was sold with a " Certified Pre owned warranty" which requires the 111 point inspection. The vehicle has to brought up to a high level of operation standard, including verification of paint thickness, tire tread, verification of no over reving above the tach redline. For this warranty coverage the buyer pays a premium above a a non certified Porsche.
In the event you are purchase a Porsche from another non porsche dealer or from a private seller you will likely not receive any warranty. In this case I would reccomend a "Pre Purchase Inspection" (PPI). These will obviously be an additional expense, but can keep you from buying the wrong car costing you thousands of dollars in repairs. PPI's are available from any Porsche Dealership or independent Service center with a strong history of Porsche repairs. As a starting point you would want to review their PPI checklist and compare it to the Porsche 111 point check list to get a base line of all systems to be reviewed, areas where thereare or could be problems and repair estimates. With this in hand, you can negociate with the Seller.

@@peterconnelly9263 I walk folks through 3 reports on 3 different Boxsters and why I chose the CPO car. But also where it had been resprayed. And of note the CPO car had dry rotted rear tires that wore down to the radials in 2300 miles or so. But the dealer 1000 miles away made good on replacing them since they were part of the CPO warranty. But I was driving on unsafe tires that were a danger. Also, the 111 point inspection did not include alignment, it seems because the CPO car was out of alignment -- some chance it was from transport but the guy who ships exotics said this would be really rare for him to see.

Great video as buying a Porsche like this requires a lot of luck to actually find one locally. Therefore, one really needs a PPI company like Lemon Squad to be on your side when finding a prospect in another part of the US. And even locally, it would be advantageous. Keep going as the videos are very informative.

Check those CarFax reports. One low mileage one in CA that I was looking at had low miles, yes, but it had largely not been driven for the last 3 years when I checked the service record. Being new to Porsche and to buying sight unseen and... I just worried a bit about it sitting for that long. That info may not shape your buying decision, but I'd rather know it than not. Good luck.

Good perspective, taking buying descisions and doubts in consideration. Hardest part of buying a car is that a car by definition is worth almost nothing...zero. And still we spent a lot of money just having one. How to avoid mixed emotions? This video helps.

Thank you. I can replay the last year imagining I bought the one with zero guarantee instead of the Certified Pre-Owned one and I think I'd like the car but be resentful. There's been some small issues with my car, some under warranty some not, but I feel good about the purchase and the warranty -- whether CPO or just the one the Porsche dealer sells as an option with any of their used cars -- is just worth it to me.

Great video (along with your initial buying experience video). I just started looking for a Boxster and found your channel. You have a new subscriber! I would also like to find a certified pre-owned, manual transmission Boxster, and was wondering how you went about searching for yours once you made the decision to get a CPO. AutoTrader, Edmunds, etc. can show a lot of cars, but not every Porsche dealer lists their cars that way, and there are hundreds of Porsche dealers across the country. Is there a way to search JUST Porsche CPO cars, and ALL Porsche CPO Boxsters available, without going to the individual web sites? (Apologies if this is a naive question). Looking forward to your future content!

    • @autofocuscarsvids719
      @autofocuscarsvids719  2 года назад +1

Thanks for your question. So, Autotrader has a new/used/certified box to narrow search. But here is the reality. The 718 (Boxster & Cayman) sells half as many units as the 911, which sells half as many units at the Macan. But the 718 (or 981 before it) is split between Boxsters and Caymans, so there are 1/4 as many Boxsters in circulation roughly as 911s. This means that a national search with a narrow set of years 2013-2016, let's say, usually gives back a number of cars that you can actually page through. I don't select the transmission because too many dealers don't list or accurately list the transmission type. I go by the photos. I later learned that (and I think I'm right) any Porsche sold from a Porsche dealer can purchase a warranty, so CPOs aren't the only used Porsches you can get with a warranty or extended warranty. So, when you narrow the search to Boxsters within a few years that are sold at a Porsche Dealer, the list gets very small. And it took me months to find the one I wanted. Of note, you can get Porsche Sports Exhaust installed on your car, so I personally wouldn't consider that a deal breaker. And Sport Chrono is less necessary in a manual car. It's a wonderful car. You'll have a blast. I just today got an aftermarket exhaust... and getting a Boxster with the flat 6 vs the turbo 4 is really worth it to me. Autotempest can check all/most sites for used cars at once, but I found mine on Autotrader. Good luck. New videos to come!!!

I think the S model with more power is more fun on the street than the base model but on the track, either is a blast and either exceeds my ability to hustle the around the corners, so a base is amazing on track for a beginner like me but the S is faster in a straight line so it's more fun for street driving, I think.

Hey man, im in a similar situation - the last car in this video - you mentioned it was a CPO - those come with porsche's official 2 year warranty and 111 point check right? Was that not enough peace of mind? Im wondering if i buy a CPO used car from the porsche dealer, then do i still need to get an independent mechanic to inspect it?

    • @autofocuscarsvids719

I did appreciate my pre-purchase inspection. My recollection was that the porsche inspection was somewhat uneven -- lots of focus on some stuff, less on other important things. And if the pre-purchase inspection finds something, you can ask that it be fixed before you pick up the car.

@@autofocuscarsvids719 The Porsche CPO at the moment is not allowing pre-purchase inspections due to covid rules. I'm thinking of going ahead and buying the car and then perhaps getting an independent inspection done later on. Not sure what else is a good idea here..

@@Fzr005 I see. I had the Lemon Squad go to the dealer, so the car doesn't have to go anywhere other than the test drive that the mechanic takes it on... does that help? Also, you can ask the dealer what the true differences are between the extended warranty they offer for sale on their cars from the dealership and then CPO warranty. If you can see it in person, then you can also judge for yourself (and maybe meet the mechanic?) but if not, that's your call. Can you keep me posted on how it turns out? thanks.
