Eddie Willis is one of those individuals that exudes warmth and friendliness. I was terribly sorry to hear of his passing not long ago. He, and the rest of the Funk Brothers were national treasures. Great interview Joe, thanks.
I'm always amazed by how determined many of these guys were to make music no matter what. I've heard similar stories from Hubert Sumlin, Buddy Guy, and now Eddie Willis. My cousin told me once that it's like the music chooses some people.
You are so lucky to have met and interviewed all of these music legends. And to have the insight to do this before RUclips was even on the map. Its just awesome Joe. To me the Funk Brothers at Motown rival any studio musicians whether it be the Ateam, American,Stax,Muscle Shoals or even the Wrecking crew. And they are all Great. Thanks to your vision ,foresight and kindness....we all get to enjoy this stuff. Thank you so much Joe. I sure hope to shake your hand some day. 👍🏻😎
Joe, I’ve got a great big smile on my face listening to Eddie! He’s a great example of what desire and excitement can accomplish! His (and my) generation grew up creating our toys from what ever was available! He developed his “ear” instincts with nails, wire, and bottles! What an inspiring story he shared! Standing in the Shadows of Motown was my introduction to the world of session musicians! I’ve been seeking that world’s stories ever since, which is how I discovered you and your episodes! Once again great interview, thanks!💫
Eddie and I became good friends when he moved back to our home town in Mississippi. He enjoyed sharing his Motown stories with others. I sure miss him.
Kinda like CHET Adkins, aye? Something about a screen door (wire 4 strings) and broom stick as well. Crazy VISION, dedication, instinct, and yes, RAW talent.
That was totally incredible Joe! Just by his demeanor, one can immediately tell how nice a guy Eddie Willis was. That story about him making his own broomstick guitar was amazing & priceless. Having read about the early Blues era, that was a very common thing to do for anyone that couldn't afford their own guitar. Classic interview Joe! Thanks & Be Well.....
Great to see this. I did backline for the Temps & Tops for many years and always enjoyed talking with Eddie. I'd get him set up in his chair in the orch. pit at the theaters in the round, set up a twin for him. Funk on Eddie where ever you are and to George Roundtree who's there with him.
I bet there was some fantastic sounding barns in the south. Love your interviews. I love it all. I think I remember this same kind of story with the telling of Robert Johnson first guitar. I remember being one of those little kids sneaking a riff. Old wood garage, a taught wire. I can’t wait!
There isn’t an interview you do that I’m not engaged ! You ask questions with honesty and curiosity. What is it with guys like Eddie Willis that they just know! this is what they want to do? Shame they didn’t get the royalties and recognition til later. Take care .
