As Sven led his horse through the trees, he searched out his herd and examined the range for anything that might be harmful to them. His horse was a great way to navigate the tough territory and allowed him to see his surroundings clearly. Sven would stop periodically and make repairs to fences and continue on his way afterward. He and his horse walked the trails, unaware they were being followed by a dangerous visitor with deadly intentions.
Back at the ranch, several hours had passed and Sven hadn’t returned. His family grew concerned and notified authorities of his absence. His rangeland was known and that is where they anticipated he would be. There are many things that can happen when riding a horse, and even Sven wasn’t immune to those risks. Hoping his horse may have come up lame or he had found one of his cattle injured, they launched a search party to find him the next morning.
They picked up Sven’s horse track’s and followed them into the rangeland, but soon noticed an alarming set of tracks merging with Sven’s. The indelible tracks of a very large black bear parallelled Sven’s horse tracks, then converged with them. The bear’s tracks were over his horse tracks proving that the bear was following them and not simply using the trail before them.
The searchers continued to follow Sven’s horse tracks for nearly a half mile, before a large black bear charged them from the brush, then peeled off and disappeared. Hoping the bear was only surprised, they waited to see if it had fled. The bear had circled around and was now chuffing and growling at them from the brush, indicating it was defending something. There were no cubs scampering up trees, what the bear was protecting became an alarming concern.
As they examined the brush, they could see the bear standing near a cache of some sort. Due to the aggressive behavior, and the fact that Sven was missing, they shot the bear so they could continue with their search.
Having dispatched the bear, searchers approached the cache site. Beneath the debris and sticks, they could see Sven’s corpse. It had been partially consumed. Now aware that they had a human fatality on their hands, they cordoned off the area to preserve the evidence until investigators arrived.
The forensics team used the track evidence to help them understand what had transpired that led to Sven’s death and consumption. They could see the bear's tracks had closed to within a few yards after following the horse for a half mile. As it burst from the brush, Sven’s horse spun to the left and his saddle rolled on the horse's back. This dumped Sven off the other side and exposed him to the predator.
Based on the evidence at Sven’s attack site, investigators estimate that he managed to fend the bear off for only ten seconds before being subdued. The only weapon found near Sven was his ax, which was lying on the ground a few feet from his corpse.
Sven’s remains were gathered and transported to the coroner for analysis. The bear’s carcass was also taken to a laboratory for a necropsy. The bear was found to be a large male in perfect health, and its stomach contained Sven’s flesh.
Regarding Sven’s horse, there isn’t any source indicating it was killed by the bear. I assume that it had escaped after the bear attacked Sven. Given the details presented, it must have been found with Sven’s saddle askew, providing the reason the cowboy was knocked or thrown from it. But does that indicate that he was thrown from his horse?
In all of Canada, 380,000 black bears roam with 120,000 to 150,000 of them in British Columbia. Nearly all of British Columbia is considered bear country given this high population and dispersion.
Between 1960 and 2014, 109 black bear attacks were reported in Canada, resulting in only twenty human fatalities. In the year 2022 alone, there were 26 bear attacks reported in Canada. Given bears are hibernating for about five months out of the year, it averages out to a little less than four attacks each month.
It is not surprising that the bear that had killed Sven was a male. The statistics indicate that 88% of human fatalities due to bear attack are from bears exhibiting predatory behavior as opposed to defensive behavior. Of those attacks, 92% of the predatory bears were males with 66% of those bears being adults. The conclusion of this analysis is that adult male black bears are about 90 times more likely to target humans as prey, than sows.

I heard of 2 hunters ,( might even have been on this site )or I read , who had harvested a moose in either Northern BC or Alaska . As they were packing back to the beach & their boat, getting through the thick willow beach brush , the man in the lead got a sudden surprise , a grizzly stool up infront of him & seated at him , he ducked , the bear hit the back pack , which spun him over backwards , but he was already in the mode of drawing his 44 Mag from its low chest mount holster , he emptied it into the bear literally standing over him & killed it !!!
So yes I think a properly carried gun in competent hands would have saved this man !

Yes, you're correct that in Canada, it is extremely difficult to legally own a Handgun let alone to obtain the almost impossible to get ATC.
Handguns are classified as "Restricted" firearms. Even Replica Black Powder cap&ball percussion revolvers are "Restricted"
Firearms in Canada. There are several European countries with freer firearms laws than Canada.
I am so glad that my mother had the insight to see Canada for what it is and get a green card and leave Canada for the Land of the Second Amendment where I was born!

To all the folks who think Sven could have defended himself with a gun, please consider that when thrown from a horse, even an experienced rider will be stunned momentarily after hitting the ground, making a quick response incredibly difficult. Hit your head or get the wind knocked out of you and it will take even longer. I'm glad the family at least learned what happened to the poor man.

It is a documented, known fact that for fast paced in close proximity reactionary Bear Attacks, a properly loaded and capable Handgun is the most effective Personal Defense Safety Device to use.
At least in many wilderness places in America, people usually can carry a Handgun for ensuring their personal safety.
The Socialist Canadian Police State is a dangerous place where people are often left unable to protect their valuable lives.
The Socialist, intrusive, punitive and penal Canadian government is complicit in the death of Sven and the other victims of Bear/ amimal attacks for arbitarally prohibiting most people from being able to carry a Handgun to protect valuable human lives!

Loose cinch has killed many a cowboy. When he stopped to repair fence, Sven might have loosened his cinch to let his mount relax a bit, then forgot to tighten it up. A horse can easily out-sprint a black bear, even if startled.

  • @jeffmiller-f4f
    @jeffmiller-f4f 4 месяца назад +3

You have to watch the trail/path behind you, complete relaxation is not possible and/or advised while out in mother nature. You need a plan to defend yourself at all times, by whatever means. Mother bears need to be cautious/selective, as injury to themselves could mean death by direct combat or injury. Thus their dependent cubs would parish. Male bears, though they are somewhat of a danger to the cubs themselves, their job also maybe to clear the territory that they, their females and cubs inhabit. One should always work in pairs and rotate between guard and worker, when out in the wilderness. Strange death none the less for the unfortunate man. RIP

I believe Swen was thrown off the horse before being attacked and after being trailed by the bear. It is very unlikely for a bear to hunt a person on horseback, so this must have been a different type of bear, more hungry, more sure of itself, probably large size.

Definitely a very bold bear indeed. Idk if I ever heard of any bear attacking a man on horseback but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. It's terrifying to think about a bear tracking and preying on a man on horseback. If Sven hadn't fallen off the horse, I wonder if the horse could've outrun the bear 🤔 although in rough terrain I think the bear had the advantage.
I'd be armed at all times outside, if I lived in BC. That's a lot of bears, 120,000-150,000 even if BC is a large territory. 😮

People can learn from the mistake of others. Of course you are right. However, it also teaches that when on the horse be ready for it to spook. I am not a professional horse back rider, but I was once taking classes. I was alone in the arena and the instructor somewhere in the back. Then people walked by the fence (it was outdoors) by carrying white plastic chairs and that spooked the horse. I had no idea about spooking or anything. It made a very sharp turn and run off, luckily, I was able to keep my balance. I have respect for horses and never went back after my lessons finished although I'd love too. It's an amazing experience, I am somewhat scared though that they may bolt or anything which you should never be with a horse. Lastly, people are always told bears will not attack, they are scared same as what they tell us about wolfs. Just clap your hands and they'll run off. Well..

Would a bear be smart enough to know the man was a separate entity while he was riding the horse or would the bear think it was some kind of animal with a lump growing on its back? I think Sven fell of the horse and was then attacked. It seems like the bear would have left some injuries on the horse as it pulled Sven off. And no horse is going to be controllable or just stand there while a bear plucks its rider off. A spooked horse can jump to the side a good 10 feet in a nano second. Sven was probably relaxed and unprepared for that and combined with the loose saddle anyone would fall off. That horse was probably a mile away before Sven hit the ground. It also seems if the horse had been injured they would have mentioned that in the report. I wonder if the bear thought he was tracking a riderless horse until he saw it and when the horse spooked and Sven fell off the bear just reflexively attacked him. Once Sven was dead naturally the bear would eat him especially after having killed him. At least that's how I see it. Poor Sven and his family.

Hey Atticus, did you know about an alarming tic toc trend where American women are mostly agreeing that they would be safer in the woods alone with a bear than they would be with a human man? And they are dead serious! Im like wow they really have no Earthly idea!

I guess dead is dead. Doesn't matter if it's a bear or man. JS.

It must be young, brainwashed women. That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard, and I'm a woman.
They should spend less time online and more time in the real, natural world. Schools really need to start educating more.
They're probably the type that would try to pet a bear or hold a baby bear. 😳🤦‍♀️
Guys, you know to stay far away from those chicks. 😅 They're the kind that will get you killed because they'll expect you to protect them from their own dumb selves.

I think that whole thing is just a handful of women expressing their frustration with men. I don't believe they mean it. Its been quite a phenomenon though.

another great episode! People underestimate Black bears but Sven had no chance. Only advantage to being on horse back is a slightly better view. If your riding a horse in bear country keep the saddle tight and be ready for the horse to bolt! Bears move amazing quiet and the sound a horse makes when its walking will cover up any sound a bear makes prior to getting you! A few years ago in BC a lady riding a horse to meet up with her family at their cabin was taken off the horse and killed by a mountain Lion. She likely never heard a thing until .....

I rode up in the trails East of Valley County, Idaho. My guy was the bravest horse ever. He was 1/2 Percheron 1/2 Quarter. A very big horse. Our last season there, we came across 5 bears. We always stood our ground and the bears went running. I was definitely more afraid of mountain lions lying inwait on the granite boulders than the bears. After following this channel for some time, both predators get the same amount of consideration.

Sad situation. Yet the Canadian people do not demand a positive change from their elected officials to allow for people to be able to carry a Handgun in the vast remote Canadian wilderness.
There have been cases of people who survived Mountain Lion attacks by having a large backpack covering the back of their neck areas. As Mountain Lions are known to attack people on their neck/ head areas.

@@MrHrKaidoOjamaaVKJV Canadian people are ruled by a neo Marxist/communist party disguised as a liberal party. Justin Trudeau is a true tyrant and uses the RCMP to stomp anyone that doesn't do what he says! That includes freezing bank accounts of peaceful protestors! Its a borderline police state so the people cant demand anything from a tyrant government! Much like the American democrats.
