The Devil took the opportunity to try and steal his soul so Jack ran up a Tree the Devil followed but Jack juked him and got down first and got the Devil stuck in a tree with a cross at the base of the tree. Made the deal that he’d want just one more drink before he went with the Devil, he sees no problem with this deal and agrees. Then comes the coin trick followed by the “no hell for me” deal. Jack would later get his head chopped off from another con gone wrong later and the rest is history. (A later variation also has him replace his lost head with a pumpkin Lantern lit by a single ember from hell that can never go out because Satan was salty) The Devil got tricked repeatedly by a Con Artist and a salty Devil makes a deal that he never shows his face in hell.
Well it could be that the pocket wouldn’t fit a devil, also the devil wouldn’t know that jack was tricking him until he took him back out so he assumed he was taking a while to pay

Pumpkaboo is unronically my favourite pokemon. But I like to interpret them as a spirit who can't go to their own rest, but can hoover up other lost spirits to take them to *their* rest. Maybe they'll be allowed in, too, if they finish their spooky community service. Or maybe they'll go full grudge ghost and evolve into a sadistic butternut squash. One or the other.

I remember learning about Jack of the lantern from night mind. They are actually multiple stories. There is 2 version the coin story and the pub story. The pub one is mostly accurate except he instead sells his soul for a drink. When he dies and him and the devil head to hell and come across an apple tree. Then Jack tricks the devil by climbing the tree to get an apple but instead carving a cross into the tree the story then continues as normal except him being a genuinely worse person. The coin story is simple jack stole some guys wallet and was being chased. The devil offered Jack that for his soul he would turn into a coin to pay the man chasing him. Jack agreed but instead pockets him and leaves him next to a cross. The devil in pain is al like “Okay take me out please and you won’t go to hell.” Jack agrees and the story continues as normal. The reason people used to carve turnips is because it was believed the spirts were absolutely terrified of Jack and the turnip lanterns would scare them off when the Irish came to America they switched to pumpkins cause of the sheer amount of them in America.

I know a another reference! Gourgeist is also based on a Japanese folktale that I don’t remember the name of, But basically its about a servant girl who alot of guys want to Marry. But she always turned them down. One of them tried so many times and failed. Until he hid one of the 10 fancy plates she was in charge of washing and showed her. She counted the plates “1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9...” He promised not to tell the emperor if she out with him and she said no. In a rage he ordered the guards to tie her up over a well. He dunked her in the cold well water over and over again in between he told her to go out with him, And every time she said no. After a while he left her there to die. But she back as a revengeful spirit. Every night the man had nightmares and she would rise from the well and begin her count. “1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...9...” then she screamed! So happy you covered Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist!! They were immediately some of my favorites when they were introduced, for their designs, their inspirations, Ghost type in my top 3 favorite types, and because Halloween is my favorite holiday! I'd like to think Halloween is my favorite because of my Celtic roots but is probably just because I enjoy Fall, the macabre, less stress as with the other holidays once I became an adult (don't enjoy Christmas as much anymore :/) and deep love of candy! I spent the past 2 months or so chaining wild Pumpkaboo on Pokémon Y to get what I called the "big chonks" or "chubby" pumpkins (i.e. the XL ones) since I'm mass-building a competitive team of my favorite mons. This only brought my pumpkin friend back to my consciousness and solidified it as one of my favorites. ☺ I adore this channel and all the deep dives into Pokémon- it has only enhanced my adoration of Pokémon even more. I remember learning about Jack of the lantern from night mind. They are actually multiple stories. There is 2 version the coin story and the pub story. The pub one is mostly accurate except he instead sells his soul for a drink. When he dies and him and the devil head to hell and come across an apple tree. Then Jack tricks the devil by climbing the tree to get an apple but instead carving a cross into the tree the story then continues as normal except him being a genuinely worse person. The coin story is simple jack stole some guys wallet and was being chased. The devil offered Jack that for his soul he would turn into a coin to pay the man chasing him. Jack agreed but instead pockets him and leaves him next to a cross. The devil in pain is al like “Okay take me out please and you won’t go to hell.” Jack agrees and the story continues as normal. The reason people used to carve turnips is because it was believed the spirts were absolutely terrified of Jack and the turnip lanterns would scare them off when the Irish came to America they switched to pumpkins cause of the sheer amount of them in America.

A turnip in Ireland is I think a rutabaga in the States? We also called them swedes, they're big and purple/green, and yellow inside, so not the small white ones that are also sometimes called turnips

I know a another reference! Gourgeist is also based on a Japanese folktale that I don’t remember the name of, But basically its about a servant girl who alot of guys want to Marry. But she always turned them down. One of them tried so many times and failed. Until he hid one of the 10 fancy plates she was in charge of washing and showed her. She counted the plates “1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9...” He promised not to tell the emperor if she out with him and she said no. In a rage he ordered the guards to tie her up over a well. He dunked her in the cold well water over and over again in between he told her to go out with him, And every time she said no. After a while he left her there to die. But she back as a revengeful spirit. Every night the man had nightmares and she would rise from the well and begin her count. “1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...9...” then she screamed! And anyone who heard her finish would be finished within a few days.

So happy you covered Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist!! They were immediately some of my favorites when they were introduced, for their designs, their inspirations, Ghost type in my top 3 favorite types, and because Halloween is my favorite holiday! I'd like to think Halloween is my favorite because of my Celtic roots but is probably just because I enjoy Fall, the macabre, less stress as with the other holidays once I became an adult (don't enjoy Christmas as much anymore :/) and deep love of candy! I spent the past 2 months or so chaining wild Pumpkaboo on Pokémon Y to get what I called the "big chonks" or "chubby" pumpkins (i.e. the XL ones) since I'm mass-building a competitive team of my favorite mons. This only brought my pumpkin friend back to my consciousness and solidified it as one of my favorites. ☺
I adore this channel and all the deep dives into Pokémon- it has only enhanced my adoration of Pokémon even more. Thanks as always, and Happy Halloween! 🎃

As for All Saints/Souls Day, these were set by Pope Gregory IV in 835, but there is evidence of its observance on November 1st dating back to the early 700s. Even an archbishop of Salzburg celebrated the feast day on November 1st as early as A.D. 798. Considering the Celtic holiday Samhain would have had no influence on this German's decision and its earliest references in literature dates only as far back as the 10th century, there is good reason to believe All Saints/Souls Day was not chosen to combat paganism in the British Isles. HOWEVER, it is pretty settled that British Christians did take advantage of this coincidence and incorporated Celtic traditions into the celebration, especially for the kids as you noted.
