For a long time, I thought Weavile’s feather headdress might have something to do with an Aesop’s fable - the way I remembered it, the weasels needed a way to distinguish which weasels were in charge, so the leader weasels wore feathered headdresses (and then got stuck in the entrances of their escape tunnels when a predator chased them, and were eaten for their hubris). Sneasler is literally my favorite Hisuian variant pokemon. Not sexually of course, but because of how useful it is outside of Battle as well as in battle tactics. It's literally a jack of all trades in the game
"oh look, fur-bait" was technically the first thing I said when I saw that thing, then afterwards it was demon slayer jokes. Gameplay-wise, that weird cat thing is honestly really good, though I prefer the ballerina plant in terms of the new fighting types added.
I mean, Victory Dance is a *very* overpowered move. I hope that Sneasler gets more good moves as well as good abilities if it is ever implemented into the other/newer games.
I really love Sneasler. Also, yeah, Victory Dance is super strong, raising not only action speed, but giving you a free omni-boost AND raising move damage. Sneasler learns decent moves, with Knock Off for coverage against Psychic types, Dire Claw being decent in offense and dealing status, and Close Combat, because Sneasler has no need for those defenses, and Close Combat is really strong. (I just realized that a ton of Hisui mons have 4x weaknesses. Lilligant, Decidueye, and Sneasler, which makes for almost half the new Pokemon added.)

Comparing Weavile to that weasel yokai with the scythe arms was pretty cool! Not to mention those yokai steal your stuff, and Weavile's hidden ability is Pickpocket.
Honestly I thought Sneasler would have been made a female only evolution like Salazzle since the first one we will probably see is a ride mon and is called Lady Sneasler by Ingo.
Now I just want a baby-mon pre-volved form called 'Sneal'. Also, long shot considering Arceus, but I hope we still see sneasler in VS. Maybe as a revived fossil mon' at least. I like it.
There is a point to be made about the misconception still hanging on due to the Egyptian goddess Bast(et)-her sacred animal was the cat and she was a goddess of protection in some vein. If I recall she was directly linked to Ra as well, so it wasn't solely about how prevalent cats were in everyday life.
Cats protected people from scorpions and snakes, and protected our grains and food from mice. Cats may not have been worshipped as gods, but they should have. Also, Sneasler is kinda cute I guess.
I watched this episode with a straight face, and then he said "please get out of sneasler that's illegal". I love the amount of research that goes into these Pokemon origin breakdowns. There's so much possible real world connections I had no idea about before
i'm tellin ya now, maybe they are feathers these days, but before Ken Sugimori redesigned it for its official art, they weren't meant to be feathers as you'll see in its original sprite, Sneasel had completely different colours, colours which will show you that these "feathers" were originally supposed to be *icicles*
That's a pretty big stretch. You seem to be mostly relying on the color, because they're not shaped like icicles, nor do they hang off sneasel's body in the way an icicle would. There's no indication that they have any significant depth in their shape either. So they're either blue feathers/protrusions or very thin, feather-shaped icicles. I think there's more there to assume it's the former
I really like sneasler! I'm happy that its design has a lot of substance, because i honestly only really liked it because of how silly it is. That kind of lanky fellow fills me with boundless joy
The part I didn’t think of is how it’s name even acknowledges theirs barely anything different other than being big. It’s just Big Sneasle or More Sneasle.

This and enamorus' videos made me love pokemon that I previously despised. Learning about a pokemon's design origins is probably my favourite part about the whole saga
Continuing from the warbonnet thing, when ferrets hunt and play, they bounce around a lot and it's called the "weasel war dance," which helps bring together the weasel/warbonnet idea.
It makes me happy that you made a video not only of sneasler but also of sneasel and weavile, explaining their concept of their form as well as Japanese culture both in weapons and in general
This video is interesting in looking into Hisuian Sneasel and Sneaseler. I always thought that the connection for both Seasels and why Hisuian Sneasel evolves into Sneaseler and Johtoian Sneasel into Weavile because of the reference to the Iga and Koga Ninja clans. If researched further, this theory of mine even ties into Johto's current Elite Four member, Koga.
@@squidmom3162 That's true that's where my theory begins. Hisuian Sneasel was originally a poison type but as stated in the Dex recorded by the player and Laventon. Sneasel that evolve into Sneasler go live solitary lives. Most likely ending their way of survival as Hisui grew into the Sinnoh region we know today. This is where I believe Sneasel begins to share history with the real history of the Iga and the Koga-ryu Ninja clans. Hisuian Sneasel and its history eventually disappear from history due to its adaptation to living in largely populated communities. Along with the age of a peaceful Sinnoh the need for territorial conflicts ends so away goes the fighting typing and poison typing. Silent as a shadow, swift as the wind, cold as the nights at dusk. Modern day Sneasel could only live as this new dual type. Where does Koga fit in? Look at the type he specializes in, the style of the gym he has built (in game-invisible wall puzzle. In anime-Ninja trap house), When he becomes an Elite Four, his room is set up much like the mountain terrain where you find Sneasel in Hisui. Through Koga, He is keeping the study of Hisuian Sneasel alive. It is unfortunate however that the pokemon lifestyle he is keeping alive, can never stand by his side. Now, this is just a theory by the end of the day. So please don't judge it too harshly.
@@EaglexHeart it’s certainly an interesting theory, and I can certainly see the connection between the ninja clans and the sneasel lines. That being said, I definitely think the koga connection is pretty far fetched. But nothing is impossible if it hasn’t been confirmed nor denied!
I really like the implication that since Johtonian Sneasel and Weavile exist in Sinnoh while Hisuian Sneasel and Sneaser have gone extinct is that the Weavile line is more intelligent and live in packs which allowed them to survive and thrive, while the Sneasler line are independent and isolationists which drove them to extinction.
Adding to this, consider that the Johtonian Sneasel line lives in similar environments (high altitude, low temperature), requires the same evolution item, and would be highly effective against the Psychic types that Sneasler would struggle with. It's entirely possible that Johtonian Sneasels were introduced accidentally by settlers or visitors only for them to invasively displace and wipe out the Hisuian Sneasel population through resource competition.
@@zoeyvalkyrie yes! Especially since we know that some members of the galaxy team are from Johto, some may have brought johtonian Sneasel over (intentionally or not) and they became an invasive species pushing Hisuian Sneasel out. Which may explain why only the Sneasler line is in Hisui before the galaxy team moved in, and in present day only the Weavile line is in Sinnoh post settlement.
The second I saw Sneasler (she was thankfully spoiler-free for me!), I knew she'd be my new favorite!! She has such a sleek design and a beautiful palette, I love her typing (being a poison trainer ;D) and overall I'm just very happy she was introduced. Thanks for doing a video on her!!! 💕💕
My favorite new pokémon in PLA is sneasler because the design is much more majestic than it’s counterpart and it’s typing of poison/fighting is amazing too, sneasler is a majestic weasel and sneasler is my current favorite pokémon in PLA that isn’t a legendary or mythical because sneasler is just so cool. I’m hoping that all these ancient pokémons especially sneasler to return to the modern times in Gen 9.
Also, there were small ninja claws that were sometimes used as climbing aids and self-defense items, which could also have influenced the way Sneasler climbs with them?
I'm pretty Hisui isnt THAT far back in the past, they have cameras and such. And i always thought that specific line you're referencing meant moreso that humans evolved from pokemon and were at one time the same species
I actually kinda like Sneasler, both it's design and how she carries me around like Nezuko. I think I prefer it over Weavile Now would I smash? I'm...not sure. Would it kill me is the question. I do know Mark would definitely smash though.
I'm so happy to get a video about my favorite Pokemon! I dont mind the Hisuian Sneasel and Sneasler forms, I'm just not much of a fan of the typing. Ice and Dark are my favorite types, replacing those types with Fighting and Poison was an odd choice.
I think Hisuian Sneasel is the true original Sneasel and Johtonian Sneasel is the result of Hisuian Sneasel migrating to Johto and becoming a Dark and Ice type to get rid of its quad weakness to Psychoc becoming outright immune to it but it ended up making it quad weak against its old form.

The is a rule of thumb on how furry a Pokémon is: if you can imagine them in the wild as a animal is not a furry, but if you instead see them as a tribe then there are furries.
@@nidohime6233 but some animals do form small tribes and hierarchical structures in nature. Just as an example- salazzle forms a harem similar to lion prides, just with reversed genders
@@nidohime6233 I think It's solely physical for pokemons because there's way too much conflicting info on their sentience/sapience or sociality, games anime(s) spin offs, mangas tend to either make them all social or extremely animal like, so I'd say anthro is a good measurement for how furry a pokemon can be
Ya know when I first saw sneaslers design I wasn't sure how to feel...but after some thinking I came to one realization...I think I like it more than normal sneasle and weavile
That's how pokémon designs usually are. However much thinking you've already done on a pokémon Game Freak has already done all of that same thinking 20 times over. I definitely prefer Hisuian Sneasel, despite Johtonian Sneasel being one of my favorites already. I just love how Hisuian Sneasel looks like it was out eating berries in a field and came back with berry juice all over its mouth and paws.
Now I can appreciate Sneasler more! It's pretty goofy as Sneasel-er Sneasel, and the fact that may very well be part of the design is just goofy enough for me XD Okay but what is the inspiration for her little box when you're rock climbing with Sneasler? 🤔

I honestly love Sneasler. Sneasel is already one of my favorite pokemon and yes, it looks like a guy in a fursuit but I really love how it battles and how it looks.
Another reason why Sneasler could be Ice type and be connected to Nohime is that in some media depictions (Nioh most notably) Nohime is depicted as a "cruel ice queen" who specializes in ice magic
I really don't get the hate for Sneasler. It's tall, it's got a cute kinda cat-like face, it's powerful in Legends, it's colors are better than Weavile's (imo), it just has so much to love.
It’s kinda bland in terms of design because as both names imply theirs nothing different other that it being even More Sneasle or Big Sneasle. Even Gamefreak says “it’s just a big Sneasle”
I went into Legends mostly blind, and got Sneasler as a Ride Pokémon before finding Hisuian Sneasel. (And got the Johto Sneasel early on in my first Spacetime Distortion in the first area) Willing to admit that I really did like the design of Sneasler when Ingo introduced the player to her. Heck I like the designs of a lot of the new Hisui evolutions in Lilligant, Kleavor, Braviary, Typhlosion, and the Hisui Growlithe and Arcanine.
For a while my theory of Sneasler's design was because I thought they were mixing a mountain climber and the Altai or mountain weasel since Sinnoh/Hisui is a very mountainous region and Sneasler is your go-to for climbing but then I thought... "How does that make it Fighting/Poison though?"
A shame it wasn't Ice/Poison, Hisuian Sneasel would have being cooler with that typing. 1:40 Is Trubbish based on a cat? 5:20 I've always found Weavile a bit indian inspired, but I think is because its name in japanese is Manyula, like Apu's wife in the Simpsons. 15:35 I think it could have work if it wasn't for Sneasler's proportions. Looks more like a slim guy who is starting to get weight rather than a graceful and haughty assassin its supposed to represent. 15:50 Kinda true. In women's fighting is not about hurting the most but how much you can destroy the other's face since beauty is part of a woman's social status. You had to make sure she is ugly at the end of a fight :3 okno My veredict: Would be better it wasn't a furry.
About 1:40 : I think what they were going for with Trubbish was the cat-specific trope of cats hanging around in alleys and in garbage cans. (Think 'The aristocats') Lock just forgot to mention it.
Sneasler might also reference another monk yokai, the Aobozu (The Blue Monk) which is said to transform into a young Shinto priest, kidnap children, and challenge people to sumo wrestling. Another thing about about them, a quote from Wikipedia "Toriyama, playing into the fact that the word for blue in Japanese ('ao') can refer to immaturity, may also have intended to depict an insufficiently trained preist as a yokai", referring to depiction from the Edo period. This might help explain why H. Sneasle doesn't evolve into the mature Weavile and continues as a slightly bigger version of its younger form.
You have forgotten bastet. A literal cat goddess and cats were seen as her servants She's the daughter of Ra and rode on his boat (the sun) and at night protected him from the serpent Apep. But also most of his night journey was snake related.
I'd argue that Fighting/Poison fits just as well regardless. It doesn't bother me. They're not just gonna go ahead and do something you want all because it's "new".
@@rjs4176 the thing is, ice/poison not only is original, it also fits more in my opinion. They still live in cold places, are known for ice climbing and have a skin made for them to resist low temperatures.
The type doesn't bother me, but I do wish it was Ice/Poison instead just for the sake of variety. I mean, we already have a Poison/Fighting pokemon in this game with croagunk and toxicroak. And Ice fits still because its still found in cold environments.
@@brunolike8631 The same reason you think it should be Ice/Poison is the same reason why I think it's fine as Fighting/Poison, the cold climate. I like to imagine that it became so unbelievably adept to the cold that its now super effective to it as a result. Truly the ultimate evolution tactic. Sneasler's always two step ahead!
These are my favorite kind of videos you put out. Taking a Pokemon who's design I either am on the fence about or don't really like and explaining why it is the way that it is, giving me a new appreciation for it I otherwise wouldn't have. Also, the edit at the end was a great touch.
I always felt that sneazel and weavile are inspired by native Americans, the feathers looks like their headdresses. Sneazel is a brave with 1 feather showing his battle accomplishments and weavile is an upgrade with a full chief headdress.
It is genuinely possible to like Sneasler without the fur attraction thing. But then again I just plain like Sneasel, and the Ghost, Dark and Poison type Pokemon.
i like poison types but dark or ice would have fit its poison typing better than fighting, plus fighting was already taken by crogunk (and i know poison dark is taken by drapion but drapion is a final evo so idc)
@@Gloomdrake i mean dark is pretty much the "rude and underhanded" type, so literal poison seems like an underhanded tactic, so in my humble opinion both work well, maybe ice works better cause its a mountain climber but dark still has a spot in the possible typing pool

Sneasler is literally my favorite Hisuian variant pokemon. Not sexually of course, but because of how useful it is outside of Battle as well as in battle tactics. It's literally a jack of all trades in the game
I never would have suspected it was sexual until you brought it up.

It's a pretty obvious design inspiration when you think about it long enough.
Sneasler and hisuian sneasel is one of my favorite hisuian forms and this just solidified it.
Also, Sneasler is kinda cute I guess.
they were worshipped... look at Egypt.
I watched this episode with a straight face, and then he said "please get out of sneasler that's illegal".
I love the amount of research that goes into these Pokemon origin breakdowns. There's so much possible real world connections I had no idea about before
i'm tellin ya now, maybe they are feathers these days, but before Ken Sugimori redesigned it for its official art, they weren't meant to be feathers
as you'll see in its original sprite, Sneasel had completely different colours, colours which will show you that these "feathers" were originally supposed to be *icicles*
I think there's more there to assume it's the former
eh, i don't really see it.
Okay, so why are they feathers now? If you're implying that those red, wavy things are ice, then you are mistaken, or even stupid.
They're the four kamaitachi blades now. But I did love the beta design enough I still draw it.
No matter what, Weavile will always be one of my favorite pokémon. I just love the design and types. Few of the Ice type that I will always like.

H. Zorua and Zoroark will always be my favorite Hisui varients, but H. Sneasel and Sneasler quickly became my No. 2 favs once I got to them in PLA.
But….Koga doesn’t have a sneasel or weavile

And sneasler can be both genders. But it does have a feminine design
Also, there were small ninja claws that were sometimes used as climbing aids and self-defense items, which could also have influenced the way Sneasler climbs with them?
Ok but, is "being in a Sneasler" really illegal? Like, it was apparently legal to marry Pokemon in the past....then again, in the past specifically.

Given this video, it makes sense why it's Poison/Fighting
