  • If you've seen the most recent episode of Doctor Who, "The Legend of Ruby Sunday," you might have some questions about who Sutekh is. If you haven't seen it yet, click away because I'm about to discuss some massive spoilers from that episode.
    At the end of the episode, the Doctor realizes that the strange sound he's been hearing coming from the TARDIS is a being that had wrapped and cloaked itself around the TARDIS. The being was revealed to be Sutekh, a God-like being introduced in the classic Doctor Who era. Additionally, he has also appeared in Doctor Who comics and audio series.
    The History of Sutekh
    Sutekh first appeared in the 13th season of Doctor Who in the episode "Pyramids of Mars." In this story, Professor Scarman accidentally unleashes Sutekh, an Osirian, after discovering a hidden tomb in Egypt. Sutekh had been imprisoned by his brother Horus for wanting to destroy the universe.
    Due to their long lifespan and moral code, the Osirians chose to trap Sutekh rather than kill him. They used a signal from a pyramid on Mars, the Eye of Horus, to keep him paralyzed. However, Sutekh could still control minds and reanimate corpses. Which he then used to manipulate Professor Scarman into building a missile to destroy the signal.
    Sutekh "Pyramids of Mars" Circa 1975
    The Doctor and Sarah Jane intervened, but Sutekh's backup plan involved taking control of the Doctor and forcing him to take the TARDIS to Mars so Professor Scarman could destroy the Eye of Horus. The Doctor, realizing the time delay in radio signals, used the TARDIS to move the threshold of the tunnel that Sutekh was using to the far future. This meant that Sutekh would never actually be able to get out of the tunnel. Meaning he would essentially age to death, despite his incredibly long lifespan.
    Sutekh in Doctor Who Comics and Audio Dramas
    Sutekh's story continued in comics and audio dramas. In a 10th Doctor comic, he escaped his fate by stepping into the void, as seen in "Doomsday." From there, he planted a seed in his son Anubis's mind. Later taking over his body to enact a plan to escape the void. He partnered with other god-like beings but was foiled by Dorothy Bell, who trapped him in her embrace and returned them both to the void.
    Sutekh also faced the Doctor in Big Finish audio dramas like "The Pyramids of Sutekh," "The Eye of Horus," "The Tears of Isis," and "Kill the Doctor in the Age of Sutekh." Before the recent episode of Doctor Who, Sutekh was considered trapped in some way, regardless of the medium. The explanation for his return and entanglement with the Tardis remains to be seen in the next episode.

    So Osirans seem to be a type of being that was heavily active in the universe and there were many of them. They also seemed to have normal, if advanced, technologies such as robots. All in all they were powerful and god-like, but not in any way shape beings from outside the realm of reality.
    And now Sutekh is suddenly a being from outside the universe and is also the supposed father of ALL the gods from outside the universe? How does that connect to the Osirans? Were the Osirans always from outside the universe? Do the other Osirans have pantheons of children? Are the other Osirans still around?
    This episode raises so many questions.

    • @cygnus4274
      @cygnus4274 3 месяца назад +3

      The theme of the season seems to be supposed myths and legends turning into real myths and legends, logic falling apart. Sutekh, wanting to be seen as a god, ever since that line of salt was drawn, has thus been able to fully manifest into the deity that he wanted to be. That is how I see it, at least.

      The dead pilot of the ship in ‘Wild Blue Yonder’ who was tethered outside the ship looked like an Osiran. So it doesn't make a big deal about UNIT putting it's base on the same spot where Sutesh was supposed to be, there's enough of a hint there to suppose there could be a reunion. And that's what we have now! 😮

      In this case Sutekh didn’t die. He was trapped in a time tunnel. It was presumed he would die eventually, because it would take thousands of years to reach the end of it, but he could have been released just a short while later, and Osirans live for thousands of years. He had already been imprisoned once for thousands of years. The Doctor was vague, unsure of their lifespan and the length of the tunnel, and just assumed he would die. I agree with you when you see a definitive end to a character it should be left alone, but that isn’t what happened here and given his god-like powers it would be more likely than not he would survive and eventually gain his freedom.

    I liked The Legend of Ruby Sunday, I think. My only gripe with it is that, unless they explain why this version of Sutekh is much more powerful, they retconned him. Because, as you said, Sutekh was never actually a true god, merely a mortal with god-like powers from a species called the Osirans. Certainly much, much weaker than a being like the toymaker.

      I just saw "Pyramids of Mars" last month, and Sutekh was much more than " merely a mortal with god-like powers." It was only through the combined strength of the other Osirans that he was defeated.
      He was capable of destroying world, as the Doctor demonstrated to Sarah Jane, and one of only two adversaries that the Doctor openly admitted he feared (the other one being the Great One from "Planet of the Spiders").

    • @Amaryllon
      @Amaryllon 3 месяца назад +1

      @@seanryan3020 I just rewatched "Pyramids of Mars" myself and it's made very clear that Sutekh is just an alien with godlike powers, not a true god.
      1.) He is an Osiran from the planet Phaester Osiris (therefore an alien) with a single physical body (the Doctor even makes a reference to Osiran physiology)
      2.) he could be trapped by technology, a forcefield specifically and relies himself on technology in his imprisonment. Compare that to the Toymaker. The thought of trapping a being like that with mere technology is laughable.
      3.) he has a lifespan of about 7000 years (therefore mortal) That's how the doctor defeats him in the first place by shifting the end of the space-time tunnel into the far future so that Sutekh cannot reach the end alive
      Sure, he is apparently more powerful than other Osirans, but that doesn't make him a true god.
      And yes, the doctor calls him "all-powerful" and "the most dangerous villain" he has faced (or something to that effect, the precise words elude me right now), but this is the Fourth Doctor we're talking about, he always tends towards the melodramatic...
      Now, in The Legend of Ruby Sunday, all of that seems to have changed. Like I said, I don't mind, but so far, it's unexplained. Maybe the Osiran Sutekh was so much more powerful than his peers because he was an incarnation or avatar of the true god Sutekh?

    Hey. I don't want to rain on your parade but PLEASE either wait with the upload until the actual airdate has past, which is roughly 7pm in the UK. If that's not possible please, whovian to whovian could you not put any spoilers in the thumbnail, title or description. It spoilt the episode for me. Other than that I wish you luck with your youtube channel.

    So you put the history of Sutekh as your title then mention the legend of Ruby Sunday, thanks for ruining this episode for me 😡

    Apparently Sutekh is an anagram of Sue and Tech.
    Yes, that'll work if you lose a letter and change one of the other ones.
    Unbelievable.
    At this point Russell T Davies is just insulting everyones intelligence.

      That would've been a big deal if they had S.Triad Technology re-appear throughout the season. Without the "bait and switch" nature of swapping out the letter in the last minute to pull a "gotcha" on the viewers, it does not matter as it would've accomplished the same reveal regardless.

      @@NoName1462 But Russell T Davis has the Doctor say " it was the wrong anagram" so even after the reveal he has the main character of the series ( well, that's a matter of opinion) look like an idiot.
      At this point he just seems to be throwing as much as he can at the screen and hoping it sticks and I can't help feeling he's going to let a lot of people down.
