Just watched your video. I am an NCLEX-RN reviewer and nurse educator and I find the reason students do not pass NCLEX is because they are not reading the question and do not think about what the question is really asking them. Critical thinking, clinical judgment and minimal competency are the main foci of the NCLEX-RN. Knowing what to do next based on the information given is paramount to passing the exam. So, before you can answer you have to think to yourself, "What is it they are really asking me?" If you are not sure, look at the answers for clues and/or patterns or similarities. They will try to trip you up, but remember vital functioning: keeping the brain, heart and lungs perfused it the body's first priority.
+Denise Garee I am happy I read this because my math teacher gave us a really great power...understanding what us the question really asking and it really applies to anything you do.
The number one reason why students don't pass NCLEX is that they don't know how to clinically reason. Remember NCLEX wants to know if you will be safe in the clinical arena. think: how can I ensure my patent's safety. What is going to harm or kill my patent? Use the following priority setting guidelines: A B C, Maslow's Hierarchy, Safety & Risk Reduction, then Nursing Process - A P I E. Make sure you are answering the question before you, no "what if?" You are responsible for a life.
I also think people fail because they go through the Nclex questions too fast. Take your time! I'm not saying spend all day on one question but you don't have to race through the questions either. You have lots of time so use it. Read the questions carefully and think clearly about each answer. Especially on questions you don't know. Don't just pick something and move on. Think about it first. Even if you know the answer to the question, still read each answer to make sure there's not an even better choice.
Rocio Victoria Yeah but you also shouldn't rush through or not read them carefully either. Some people read the question and pick the first answer they see that they think is right and then move on. Meanwhile, if they would've taken the time to actually go through each answer they would've seen that the answer they first picked was wrong because there was an even better answer that they missed which was correct.
Anyhow I failed the pn nclex and now I am crushed and so upset. I have seven guides and I ordered the Kaplan Q bank questions and none of it helped me. Maybe I did not take time to look at each one. i was told in school not to spend too much time on any one question. I also was getting 56% on the Kaplan questions I tried to cancelled the test but pearson did not want it to cancel it. I am so upset I do not what to do next.
Rocio Victoria You may need to take one of those testing taking strategy courses. I think that really helped me. I used Kaplan. Exams such as NCLEX are mostly about strategy and knowing how to answer the questions. Yes, you shouldn't or even have to spend a lot of time on some questions but honestly, there are some in which you do. Even if you don't know the answer, try not to just pick some random answer just so you can continue. Make an educated guess, use process of elimination, etc. I still read through all of the answers to a question even if I knew the answer already. One can never been too careful.
Finally! You have been the only person saying to study content. I pass my NCLEX on my first try. It is important to have knowledge. Ex: If you don't know anything about pH, HCO3 and CO2...don't expect to resolve ABGs questions. If you don't normal labs parameters, you are no nurse y you are going to fail. Knowledge is vital...
This video was so on point. Everything you said I have felt. My friends have passed on the first try and they have no idea what it feels to fail 2-3 times. I have changed the way I study, but sometimes I freak myself out to schedule a test date and I know I'm not ready. Just the pressures of life and finances push me to hurry up but I know I need to take my time and do what's right for me. Thank you for the encouraging word.
what Worked for me was understanding the test and not so much the content . Which I still did content review but I Focused more on dissecting the question and understanding the Structure of the test and looking for a pattern in the answers themselves. Learned that bc I had to take the Hesi 3 times. But I'm glad I did since I had to take Nclex once!
i think that's what kaplan teaches i think? strategy. i agree with you 100%. i feel if you know the strategy, you are halfway to the right answer in my opinion.
Given the nature of the exam anyone ever believe that sometimes people just get screwed? Two people sit down, both get topics that cover the same fundamental information one gets 75 questions 70 of 75 are straight multiple choice. Second person also gets 75 questions, 35 out of 75 are SATA. In principle one could just say "well if they know it then it doesn't matter" but push comes to shove mathematically the second person still had a harder test. I'd wager this happens more than we'd think.
Mindyourbusinessgoogle - I agree with that but also say that I have helped students pass on both sides of that scenario by learning the core content which is the common denominator to Passing NCLEX.
I studied for 14hrs straight for the Exit Hesi, then took the exam (4hrs long) right after that. I made a 830 score. Shocked everyone because I am known to pass Hesi with 1000s. On the second try, I didn't even touch the book, just a good night of sleep. Made a 350 point HIGHER than class average at 1100. Sleep > study
David Vu That's a great example! A lot of people let nerves and anxiety get the best of them. Study smart then show what you know, you can't cram for NCLEX!
I think with this test, dont worry so much about what you dont know, yes it is still important but, wprry most about your ability to make a good reasonable decision
This is true I can only study when I take my youngest to preschool that takes about 2 1/2 hrs and im always on my phone checking time cause i dont want to miss his bus. Its crazy but i have to push myself to focus more :(
The first two reasons were the top reasons i def failed. And people have been telling me even recently, that are current nurses, "just do 500 questions a day," or "just do 100 questions a day," and I don't have that time on my hands because I always write down the rationales. Then one nurse told me to not spend time on rationales and snapshot the question I got wrong, the right answer and the rationale and move on. So now after watching this, I am a bit conflicted...how should I really study now? I have grieved for a few years now. I am redoing the ATI for my school so they can let the state board know I am ready. It has been taking me awhile on the ATI even as well because I have a full time job as a Med Tech. I do my best to balance everything in my life. So, back to my question on the best ways to study, retain the information, and do well on my tests and NCLEX so I can finally be the nurse I have been needing to be for the past 5 years. Should I just read from one of my books? I need so much help! Mentor me!...heh
I just passed my NCLEX on 2/6/20 by using both Uworld, and listening to Mark Klimek on youtube. I answered at least 75 questions per day for 1 month. When I took the NCLEX exam I thought to myself these questions are easy compared to Uworld questions. I am not being paid by Uworld, but I highly recommend it. Tasha Hines R.N.
I never thought I would fail NCLEX. My classmates who passed it told me it was much easier than our exams. So of course I thought it would be easy, because I did better on exams than they did. Nope. I only scored above passing in one of the sections, below on one and then near passing on the rest. I have a lot of work ahead of me.
YVONNE BRUCE there are certain topics that are smarter to study for NCLEX. it's not smart to focus on content. The only content I would recommend to study is things like lab values, medications (especially cardiac meds & psych meds) review your blood gas equations & levels & study your developmental stages and some nutrition. Studying any more content than this is taking time away from learning test taking skills the n clex wants you to know plus there is going to be tons of new information that is tested on the NCLEX that we were not taught in school so doing tons of questions a day Is smartest
in the NCLEX it's all about priority and safety! They all might be good answers but which one needs attention FIRST. what's more dangerous? who's likely going to die first if you don't act accordingly? Yes it's good to know content but you will see questions you've never learned before. Doing multiple questions a day and getting a feel of how the questions will be asked is the best way to go and understanding the rationales. Not sitting down reading the entire textbook word for word. It isn't anatomy and physiology. It's critical thinking.
My content and all that I remembered from nursing school is spotty. I'm doing Kaplan questions and get mostly in the 50s. I'm schedule to take NCLEX in a month. I'm doomed. I feel horrible now. :-(
I am scheduled to take my NCLEX RN for the first time in a few days and I'm scared to death! They say you can never be prepared enough. I'm just looking for tips to control my anxiety about this test.
Hi! i really like your videos and i find them very helpful. I just finished nursing school and and very soon im going to take my board please where can i purchase your book please? tank you

I just took it today and got 265. The sad part is Id read the question and know the answer but it wasnt an option (from what ive been studying). I always narrowed it down to 2 answers and well they BOTH were important and while studying I remember reading about how both options were. Long story short I did the trick an hour after my exam and it took my money BUT I got the red triangle box saying if accepted they will take my money...the money is pending currently in my bank account and I am SALTY. I actually have your review book and the CD where you go over the answers....i got through the first 20 pages and missed 2 answers for the quiz...i then skimmed the rest of the book as I was on a crunch for time. I have been studying seriously for a month now and casually before that. My paychecks are 90 $ at work every two weeks and Im so sad I have failed and took off from the gym and work and not only that but I went to the library from 3 pm until 9 pm everyday working my butt off!
uhohbube Think what would happen to your body if you went hard in the gym for 6hrs everyday non stop. You're mind is a part of your body. You likely reached a point each day where your mind could not benefit from the time put in. After the 1.5 hrs in the mental gym your mind needs time to rest and let the information soak in. Try to study 1-2 topics at a time 3 max for 1-2 hrs each day unless cramming due to deadline, which I don't recommend.
ReMarReview I took the Hurst review and even paid for the extra $50 to extend and only watched a video or two a day and then did questions -____- Honestly I feel like I had a good general knowledge. Im really upset because non of the questions I practiced were similar to the nclex. Not the Hurst, not the saunders, not nclex 4000. I just wish I went with my gut and not my experience from the outcomes I learned from those practice questions. Nclex really is about thinking the WORST. Sorry I keep rambling...I'm just so disappointed and upset. Now I have to walk across that stage at graduation next month knowing I FAILED. How embarassing. WHILE 90% of my classmates have passed...nothing more embarrassing than that.
uhohbube Some students find Hurst, Saunders, and Kaplan to be overwhelming because they give you too much unnecessary information. It just seems like to me nurses need to know a lot of unnecessary information that will never be used. Just seems like to me that they try to make the nursing schools and nclex or whatever exceedingly difficult just because they can. Most of the nurses I know and some that have been retired have deemed the nclex a ridiculous test based on a lot of nonsense. Between the nclex crap and all the overkill of info you have study and learn in these schools makes it easier for a person to make mistakes in the clinical setting because they are saturated with so much useless crap that a person won't know what to do most times. And from my hospital stays most nurses don't do anything but walk in the room, ask how you are doing, make some adjustments if you are uncomfortable, some act like it's a bother to do even that, and administer a few meds.
