So I have an AirSense 10 Bipap. I don’t know how to raise my pressure my a notch or two. But all the doctor wanted to do is send me for a $5600.00 sleep test. SMH. How can I bump the pressure up by one and try it ?

He asked how I knew about that one feature, I could tell he didn't know about it. We'll we never changed it after that.bjust got a Prisma 20A, and sleep better, and mi AHI has even hone down, always between 0 and 1, can't get better than that. Keep up the great work.

@@Freecpapadvice I learned it all from you, back when SleepyHead was the program to use. They had my starting pressure at like 6, I’m 6’2 300lbs, I felt like I was trying to breath through a straw. I called my DME and they said “just try it for a month”. Looked at the data on SleepyHead, and saw I was going up to 12 once I fell asleep, so I changed my starting pressure to 12, and I’ve had an AHI under 1 for 8 years, and haven’t fallen asleep behind the wheel since then. If I hadn’t started CPAP, I’m not sure I’d be alive today. I had fallen asleep driving twice once I started, and fell asleep at my desk all the time, and it wasn’t a “oh man I’m sleepy, I should find a place to stop” it was a “oh crap, I’m going to sleep right now”. The last time it happened, I woke up in a grass median while on I-30 in Arkansas, with the cruise set to 75mph.
I had my machine for 5 minutes before I searched on youtube how to change it. I just finished serving my 5 year sentence for changing the settings. But I still have my machine with the settings I set it at. So I am finally getting a good nights sleep.

UK NHS patient here. My sleep clinic only look at AHI and hours used via Airview, nothing else at all. They also didn't 'prescribe' a pressure , it was just set at APAP 4-20. After my month review they just told me to get in touch in a year for replacement bits unless there's a problem. Pretty poor really. I've learnt so much l from your and other channels and using Oscar I pretty sure I could do a better job myself! If I hadn't changed settings myself I think I'd be struggling with it. Great channel and info 👍
Wanted to add, I have turned my machine off in the middle of the night for some weird reason, then fell back to sleep with the mask still on, woke up a couple hour later. I'm still here. I had a sleep study years ago, they said I had apnea. The apnea got worse, they wanted to do another study said it would take 6 months for that and cost thousands. I said screw that. I bought my Autoset 10 machine used (only 1000 hours, no smoke smell, $300), mask was new, from some dude on craigslist, works great, had to learn everything. Your videos helped a lot. AHI is averaging under 1.
The VA got mad at me and changed my pressure and ramp settings back. I finally got a 1 on 1 appointment. She was trying to shame me into not changing things for my safety. 5-15 and ramp starting at 4. Uggggghhh. I told them 5 was too low. 😬
You’re right I just got a trial machine to take for a run at the sleep place. My pressure is set to 5 as well it’s way too low for my moderate sleep apnea where I quit breathing every 27 times in an hour. I feel just rank. I’m so exhausted and fatigued still it’s been two weeks. The pressure is to blame I’ll turn mine up with my own machine I think I need to set it to 9 at least.
Jason, I almost had police action at my sleep doctor appointment 8 days ago. I had discontinued my psych meds 3 months after last year's appointment. My neurologists and sleep doctors always told me to get off psych meds because it was causing my sleep apnea. My sleep quality deteriorated a lot since I went off the meds. I started falling asleep while watching TV again - something that I experienced prior to CPAP therapy. I decided to be a real smart ass and printed off two OSCAR reports for my doctor - 08/23 - 11/23 (on psych meds); the other from 11/23 - 08/24 (off meds), which I delineated on the top of the reports. She looked at both reports thoughtfully and said, "You sleep much better on psych meds!" Very hard to keep a straight face after that comment, lol. I knew my RERAs were really bad, which she noted, too. She said, "You're not on a fixed pressure now?" I blamed it on our cleaning lady (not a Stewie) on this. I know how to get into clinical mode, just like my doc can, but I pleaded ignorance! Honestly, I don't know what happened there, but it showed my avg pressure was 14.75 (I was on 14, at least I thought), so my doc increased my setting to 15. Since this change, I've been sleeping better. Be your own health advocate - upload OSCAR. And keep watching Jason, too😊
I changed my settings and it's worked out for the best even mouth taping thanks Jason keep up the good word I better go I see some flashing lights in the background
I was chastised by the respiratory tech that I lowered my max pressure my first month. Year and half later the neurologist got angry I adjusted my pressure after getting a review of my settings on SleepHQ that helped me lower my AHI. Saw a different sleep tech after that and when I explained why he said good.
I learned more in just a few days from watching videos from you, Uncle Nicky, and Vik Veer than I have in a year with two different sleep doctors who were convinced I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or narcolepsy because all they cared about was the AHI level and the MyAir app data. It's really sad. I feel like I'm finally turning a corner in therapy, and it infuriates me that sleep medicine is this terrible.
I changed mine unit I found what worked for me. Then when I visited my sleep doctor, she said “Wow, these settings are working great for you! Let’s keep it here.”
during my initial usage period my respiratory therapist change my pressure levels without asking me, and made it unusable for me, so since I put it in airplane mode and set my own levels.
I have been given the gears on more than one occasion by the respiratory therapist. It take me 3 months to get an appointment to see them, just to have them drop my pressure to the prescription which makes me feel like crap...11cm. I get home and within 10 minutes, I change it back to 15 with EPR of 1 and babies do not sleep as well as I do at 15.
One time I switched from 12 to 12.2 and the PAP SWAT HRT kicked in my door but I was able to grab my Airsense 11 and flee. It didn't help my sleep. I guess I need to schedule an analysis...
My "sleep doctor" was a NP. Really didn't care if I changed everything. what I learned was that maybe the cpap could work but my throat couldn't handle it and the machine couldn't do it long enough. So what happened? His assistant was actually very helpful but the problem was that I needed another solution. Luckily I found a dental sleep appliance that works well, Took 6 months or so to get used to it. not cheap but medicare will pay for one I think if you are old enough.
Medicare will pay for a mouth device. Five years ago when I got my Medicare covered apnea dental device, it only fully covered a really clunky device. It was very uncomfortable and made my TMJ worse, and did not help my apnea, plus I could not close my mouth. Hope Medicare cover the more comfortable mouth devices now.
It’s not like your doctor is sitting around like a NASA scientist monitoring what your data looks like on a daily basis. I know mine just views modem data during the appointment and says yea or nay as to whether I’m doing okay.
I change mine all the time!!! I never had a DME I bought mine outright so didn't have to be watched to see if I was using it. I do send my Dr a monthly report.
The fact you need a prescription is the crime here. Doctors telling you that you can’t change pressure are committing fraud. Doctors can discuss potential issues snd give advice, but Doctors do not own us. No doctor has the knowledge or concern about my condition that I do. Changing pressure without patient consent should result in jail time. WE IWN OUR BODIES. USE OF CPAP IS DETERMINED BY THE PATIENT, NOT THE DOCTOR.
I use a ResMed AirSense 10 and have been seeing stuff on internet about inline CPAP bacteria filters. Are they recommended to assist in my therapy or bad idea? Wouldn't even know if it applies to my current machine. Thoughts?
I used to have issues with my resmed F30 hybrid mask now I have no issuesby adjusting for that jaw thing you mentioned so I ajusted to always have that and no more issues
3:40 Be careful about changing pressure yourself and then depending upon Airplane Mode to protect you, because, for example, my sleep center does not seem to use transmitted data for compliance at all...they ONLY obtain compliance data by inserting THEIR SD CARD into my machine at the beginning of my office visits to instantly retrieve all data from the machine, INCLUDING ALL DAILY PRESSURE SETTINGS. And, if you have changed your settings at any time from "AS PRESCRIBED BY A PHYSICIAN", then IMHO the following applies: "All states and insurance companies put out clearly defined statements on what is and is not a "covered service". Every single one of these statements I've seen specifically restricts covered services to medical devices as prescribed by a physician (or equivalent thereof) and distributed by a pharmacy, DME, etc. Well, it should be obvious to everybody here that once you've changed your pressures your machine is no longer "as prescribed by a physician". Continuing to use that machine is therefore no longer a covered service. That means that any money billed to Medicare or your insurer for your CPAP care - be it in machine rental, mask replacement, etc - after you changed your pressure without telling anybody would...". I'm not convinced that "illegal" is accurate, here, but at a minimum I think you could lose coverage... probably retroactively back to when you strayed from "as prescribed by a physician". The above quoted section can be found here: www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic/t56845/Why-it-IS-illegal--sort-of--to-change-your-pressure.html
Yes your right i dont have a dr i can go to i did all mine over the Internet with a online dr. So ive beem on my own but went to do my dot and passed with flying colors. They dont look at much i just print off my repoett off oscar and bam no problems. Thank you your the best love your videos. My wife is starting cpapa we bought our machine thur majorcpap and got hers for 329 for the airsense 10. Good deals there too.
I changed my CPAP settings from 7-12 to 4-7 after losing 40+ pounds over the last 12 months. I was pushing the obese level BMI of 30 (I was at 29.9) and I lower it to the low 23's BMI. Half way through my journey, I started to have issues keeping a good mouth seal, so lowering my pressures improved it greatly. My AHI is always below 2.0 and it usually below 1.0 most of the time! My DME had liked the changes and applied them to my recent upgrade to the ResMed AutoSense 11. I've been using a CPAP since retiring from the military in 2009...using ResMed machines since the beginning of my treatment.
Thank you so much for the video!❤❤❤❤ Was having the worst cpap farts and feeling so bloated. Had my pressure cranked up to 10 when I was using a Cloth mask. Now that I have a nasal mask it was not right for me. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Where are the CPAP Authorities. Ihave not been roughed up or arrested by the police. I talked with my specialist, he said it was okay to reset the pressures as needed. Last year I got Covid I had to reset to a lower pressure setting. A couple of month ago my CPAP motor had reach it life. I stopped the ramp feature to make it work till I received a new machine.
I got flack from my machine provider for changing settings. They messaged the doc and said they would call me when they got the new pressure Rx. I eventually developed so much anxiety at bedtime that I quit using the stupid bi-pap.
I just noticed this was posted 4 months ago😮. I honestly don't know what my pressure is, and I should be sued it caused me hell when I was admitted through the ER. Lucky for me my neighbor brought my machine so 30 miles in to the hospital for me. I was there a bit. My problem at home was ramp up. The CPAP was set for 30 minutes. I putzed around and got set to 15. But as an old far, get shut the machine off, go to the John and counter reset. I don't need the time to get used to it. I need about three breaths
Here's what I don't understand. Bipap can function as a CPAP, right? Why not just prescribe everyone bipaps, set it on the cpap mode and switch to bipap if needed?
I changed my pressure within a few weeks. My doctor set me up with a range of 5 to 15cm and that was horrible. My doctor wasn't happy about me changing it, but I was raising my pressure and getting better sleep! In the end my settings worked better.
My provider sent me home with a CPAP. The next day, I felt horrible because the pressure was set to 4-20. I tinkered with the pressure using OSCAR and zeroed in on a small range. I went to my next appointment a week later and told them I used OSCAR, and they said "that's not safe to download, someone told me it has viruses." It had some serious "don't download that .mp3.exe file from Limewire" vibes.
I learned to change CPAP pressure years ago from friend in Australia, who is a Mensa IT guy (not saying that high IQ is required as it’s so easy). Back when ebay allowed sales of used cpap machines, he would have me buy them for him. (Sellers typ wd not ship overseas from USA.) I wd check to see if they ran, box them up again and ship to Oz (USPS was cheapest and fast, with tracking). Cpap prices there were so high, it would still pencil for him to tweak them and then re-sell at quite a profit. He’s the type that took them apart to see how they worked and put them back together again. Learned a lot about various brands and types back then. Then (2008?) when I had the opportunity to go to Oz on a biz gig, I bought several on his behalf, put them in a spare large suitcase and we Qantas’d them to small hotel near Sydney. He met me in the lobby to retrieve all the loot. Puzzled guy at the desk said, “Oh, I see we’re traveling light!”. Had a great time in Oz, traveling with my cpap. 💤
I bought a BiLevel on Sale out of pocket. Just had my PMP PA write a script for it; He was more concerned about my sleep data than my official Sleep Dr…. Who only cared that I was breathing it seemed
What’s the best way to “disconnect” myself from my DME? Do I just call them up and say “I no longer want to get CPAP equipment from you.” Or is there some way I need to go about this? I’d like to just get my prescription and start managing it myself.
Would like to know what causes the feeling of being suffocated when you can't breathe through mask. I've used CPAP for 11 years with no problem at all. Now I periodically wakie up because I suddenly can't inhale with the mask on. Since it's early morning (5 am), I end up falling asleep without the mask because I'm still tired,. This causes scalene, SCM tightness and even rib issues since I am using accessory muscles to breathe. Of course my pulmomologist says he sees no problems and my overnight oxygen showed my oxygen levels were fine. It's like you report, the doctor says my usage and AHI is good, but I feel dismissed by the medical profession.
Hey Jason if you read this I was wondering. I have always went in to see my Doc once a year and jus tt the other day I called for my yearly and I was told it is now every two years now is that a thing or is it always every year?
Thnx for info, Lanky. Just curious....what's a good product to minimize chin strap irritation of the underside of the chin? I've tried many skin products but usually end up with tender areas by morning.
If you're using a full face mask, change to a soft cervical collar. If you're using a nasal or nasal pillow mask, change to just tape your mouth as you'll typically just lip sputter which still causes awakenings.
Hey, just found your channel while looking for answers. I'm in a bad spot with my current Resmed BipapSt Aircurve 10. 0-2 bars, machine IS working (I use it EVERY NIGHT), but it's not writing accurate data..if it records at all. I use it every night, but when Lincare looked at the SD card they all but called me a liar. I live in a rural area, but they say it should still be on the card. This is my second machine. They are about to turn me loose. Please help!
I changed mine just a bit like start at 4 up to say 18 not that much right, but was told to leave it as the time might come when i might need it ect. I’m in Australia and went to a sleep clinic, after two years I’m really on my own now anyway. Sometimes get a yearly review due to driving report. Love your channel. 🇦🇺✅🧑🦳
It’s not illegal if it’s your own machine and also if you find the pressure isn’t right for you then you should be able to take it into your own hands. We know are body’s and what they can handle.
7:30 POWER OUTAGES NO MORE Been using a Jackery 300 as my CPAP power supply / UPS for years. Power goes out, my machine just keeps running for another 8 hours.
How do I fight my doctor I know I need O2 from a digital O2 monitor dropping to 74, I hear I have issomana one more time I am going to have a QR code tattooed to my chest for the Coroner.
your Dr should easily order you an at home overnight test. Its basically the same thing as the otc o2 rings but medically officially approved so they can review the data. I knew I was dropping during REM from months of data from my o2 ring and apple watch and since it was confirmed with the overnight test, the Dr ordered me oxygen the next day. If your Dr is trying to just poopoo the idea you need oxygen overnight and wont order you a test, then get another Dr. I've been on it for a yr now and it eliminates my all o2 drops below 90. On the occasion I travel and dont have oxygen you can clearly see my drops again.

@@Freecpapadvice so how does that question get settled? What is good pressure for each person? I feel its not high enough. The PA wouldn’t go any higher on my pressure. Apparently I am at the top pressure and my body can forget how to breathe….
@@guymontana5338 APAP machines (Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset etc) are good for this... you set a range, then sleep a few nights... see where the machine wants to take you... then set a min pressure above that. Once you get it drawing a flat pressure line most of the night that's your good pressure.
Here is one caveat emptor. If you change the pressure without physician input, it might affect your potential to sue the prescriber for negligence, even if you might have a legitimate cause of action. While possible, I doubt this be a (good) reason to not change your cpap settings.
Airbreak is the one where the machine does everything... confusing, unsatisfying, and unwieldy. Best is to just read the firmware from an Aircurve 10 and put it into an Airsense 10... like I did! 1800$ machine for 300$ brand new. Does not work on the 11 series.
I would think that anyone who has the expertise toter a cap machine into a bipap machine can 1) afford to buy the bipap machine, and 2) is using up a lot of their valuable time. I suspect they do it for the same reason that people climb mountains.
I’m calling BS on this. It sounds like a scare tactic employed by that doctor. I would probably be dead if I hadn’t taken treatment into my own hands , largely following advice from yourself. I’ve purchased my machines outright as they’re not regarded as essential medical devices and eligible for government subsidies or benefits here in Australia. My cat Chuck is a known miscreant but so far hasn’t worked out how to access my settings. 👍🏻
Any Kaiser patients here? I’m at my wit’s end with their incompetent care. I only have them for a few more moths but their Sleep Medicine is incompetent.

That doc is a keeper.
during my initial usage period my respiratory therapist change my pressure levels without asking me, and made it unusable for me, so since I put it in airplane mode and set my own levels.
Medicare now requires yearly Dr in office visits for yearly prescriptions for cpap for them to pay for supplies.
Meanwhile since I can’t schedule a visit til next year (doc too booked), I can’t get my prescription renewed.
Danke!
Saw this earlier today and laughed out loud. Great imagery!
What jaw thing? I'm having jaw drop and can't get it fixed😢
And, if you have changed your settings at any time from "AS PRESCRIBED BY A PHYSICIAN", then IMHO the following applies:
"All states and insurance companies put out clearly defined statements on what is and is not a "covered service".
The above quoted section can be found here:
www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic/t56845/Why-it-IS-illegal--sort-of--to-change-your-pressure.html
Dude, I was busting a gut watching that first minute, laughing so hard! That was awesome.
😅 come and get me your lousy screws. How's about a lead salad!!😂.
It’s illegal to take your wife’s prescription Vicodin too, but who’s even giving a eff?
Would you explain Flat tops on the tops of waves with rapid spikes up. I’d like to see what that looks like.???
It looks like my chart before I changed the sleep technician's settings. 😄
I’m locked out since my pressure was changed and it’s driving me crazy that they can do that!
Here's what I don't understand. Bipap can function as a CPAP, right? Why not just prescribe everyone bipaps, set it on the cpap mode and switch to bipap if needed?
I am 100% a proponent of this! 🎉
Fun fact: Toyota has recently gotten heat for trying to avoid covering warranty items, claiming the driver was going too fast.
I changed my pressure within a few weeks. My doctor set me up with a range of 5 to 15cm and that was horrible. My doctor wasn't happy about me changing it, but I was raising my pressure and getting better sleep! In the end my settings worked better.
I got the death penalty for changing mine and I haven’t slept better since I sat in that electric chair
Love the video, a lot of great information. Do you happen to turn your airplane mode at all? Does That mess up Oscar?
With the exception of this video, I always leave airplane mode on. It doesn't mess up OSCAR at all.
@@Freecpapadvice thanks Jason, I've always wanted to ask but I've never remember to, thank you!
Thank you for the video. It was so helpful.
What's bad about mask leakage? Can you link a video you have done about it?
My provider sent me home with a CPAP. The next day, I felt horrible because the pressure was set to 4-20. I tinkered with the pressure using OSCAR and zeroed in on a small range. I went to my next appointment a week later and told them I used OSCAR, and they said "that's not safe to download, someone told me it has viruses." It had some serious "don't download that .mp3.exe file from Limewire" vibes.
If I live in NY City (or even Cincinnati), I can find another sleep doctor. If I live way out in the country, that might be hard.
If you put the machine in airplane mode will it communicate with the MyAir app? I would think no but I'm asking because I'm not sure
I have ALS and use a bipap. Much different use case than apnia. Unforunately there is zero info on ALS settings.
What’s the best way to “disconnect” myself from my DME? Do I just call them up and say “I no longer want to get CPAP equipment from you.” Or is there some way I need to go about this? I’d like to just get my prescription and start managing it myself.
Do you have to order supplies through the company that monitors your CPAP they're the most aggressive sales people ever met
No, you can break up and don't even need to let them know about it.
the doctor define the pressure looking at just one night. that is not fair.
Good kitty!
Well LankyLeft I have just more weeks to service before getting out of the pen.
You got sloppy!
The Air10 machines are all the same. The firmware just locks or unlocks different modes.
You could always sue yourself for changing the pressure.
😅
🚩 So I have an AirSense 10 Bipap. I don’t know how to raise my pressure my a notch or two. But all the doctor wanted to do is send me for a $5600.00 sleep test. SMH. How can I bump the pressure up by one and try it ?
Mine never said boo when I changed mine.
Is too much pressure a problem?
Too much or too little can be a problem.
I'm still waiting on that colt membership approval. But I think you should go with the KITTY HUD.
My cat changed the pressure accidentally, when can I expect the CPAP police to show up?
Here is one caveat emptor. If you change the pressure without physician input, it might affect your potential to sue the prescriber for negligence, even if you might have a legitimate cause of action. While possible, I doubt this be a (good) reason to not change your cpap settings.
Too high wakes me up I lowered it from 15 to 13 and will still go lower on max. Plus the tech showed me how.
Let's just say yes. Who's going to enforce it?
My C-PAP Doctor monitor's my my machine in there office. I see my doctor once a year.
That's the formula. It's honestly a very poor setup. You might be doing perfectly fine with it, but it's a very subpar method.
Airbreak is the one where the machine does everything... confusing, unsatisfying, and unwieldy. Best is to just read the firmware from an Aircurve 10 and put it into an Airsense 10... like I did! 1800$ machine for 300$ brand new. Does not work on the 11 series.
Yes but unfortunately the most illegal option. The whole reason airbreak exists is to modify your own firmware. But let's be honest...
@@SilentServiceCode Well, now I own both an Airsense and an Aircurve... so, partly legal?
@@scowellI would think your license is covered under that scenario. You're the licensed user...
I would think that anyone who has the expertise toter a cap machine into a bipap machine can 1) afford to buy the bipap machine, and 2) is using up a lot of their valuable time. I suspect they do it for the same reason that people climb mountains.
hey Jayson, Where is Legoman??? Did you guys have a fight? did your cat eat him? I'm very concerned...
Sometimes Legoman is needed....sometimes he's not. 😄 I'm sure he'll be back.
So you need a script to blow air up your nose😂snake oil con game.
Leaf blowers will require a prescription soon.
Hey thx for the tip. And I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE LOL.
My doctor said you can damage your lungs if you use too much pressure . 😢😢
Too low isn't good. Too high isn't good. (you're not going to damage your lungs though...that's just a scare tactic)
Any Kaiser patients here? I’m at my wit’s end with their incompetent care. I only have them for a few more moths but their Sleep Medicine is incompetent.
A machine that Insurance won’t replace until 5 years with a two year warranty! 😂 My Airsense 11 doesn’t work, sent back for warranty came back and still doesn’t work properly. Warranty expired. Purchased an airsense 10 auto set for 399.99, at CPAP Shop, much better machine.
When my pressure is too high I do start farting badly. Always need new underwear when that happens.
