@@thebarkingmouse it is a button that is used to indicate a change in traveling direction. Being able to properly signal in time is important for safety and signaling is a legal requirement when operating a motor vehicle.
Deciding to place said button on a surface that moves around as you turn makes it more difficult to reach. And it is placed next to the button that indicates a turn to the opposite direction.
I have yet to get any suggestion of the benefits to the driver by removing this part. It doesn't improve visibility? Ergonomics? Safety? Will it make the Tesla more attractive for a prospective buyer during a test drive if they come from a vehicle with stalks?

@H3aby84 calling me a fanboy is just an ad hominem attack I'm no such thing. I waited nearly 10 years to buy a Tesla myself because I was waiting for the cars the software and the charging Network to be ready.
Whatever your problem with the car is I frankly don't care. I'm very happy with the car and have had no trouble operating it. But of course I'm reasonably intelligent and tech savvy. Perhaps your limitations are such that it's not the right choice for you.

Having said that, if they can do a better version it would be handy to have both options. Especially as I think my 89 year old father would struggle with the lack of stalks. Something I would do before retro fitting stalks is either a heads up display or a small instrument binnacle in front of the driver. If it's good enough for Ferrari why not Tesla. What is the thing with stalks. I've driven cars with windscreen washer controlled by the left foot, foot controlled high beams, indicators on the dash panel and even manual geared cars that require you to take you hand completely off the wheel to change gears... how bizarre!. Try moving from left and drive to right hand drive or the other way round, it's confusing at first. All of these things are different and cause initial problems but a competent driver should be able to get used to them. If the implementation is bad then I'm sure that is worth discussion. I can't see it being a problem for many drivers (in the UK at least) as most people don't use them or use them just after turning the wheel.

All these people saying "well I would buy the S/X/3 Highland if it didn't have the stupid buttons for stalks and/or yoke".. shows the same people there are plenty of aftermarket options and now round steering wheel from Tesla - and not one of these people buy. It's just the pretenders that complain about buttons/yoke. Buttons and yoke are second nature for me, including roundabouts. It's not a problem.

Unpopular opinion, but I really like the buttons as turns signals and no gearbox stalk/stick.
I've now owned Highland for 6 months and this is my first Tesla but second EV (Leaf was first for 3 years). I've gotten so used to the buttons for turn signals that it's weird to drive other "regular" cars now. Even the fact that "get in and drive" is so rare in other EV's as well. Personal opinion - at most this is more of a "getting used to" thing more of a "I will never get used to it no matter what" thing.
Furthermore, the lack of HUD is also something that is second nature to me now. The visibility is so good in front without it (compared to other cars that have massive HUD's, Toyotas for example). The eye movement time from the road to the edge of the screen to see the big number for speed takes at very least the same time as for the regular HUD speed checking.
All the same goes for the no buttons at all argument - everything in Tesla UI is basically set once and touch again rarely. So driving regularly will not involve pressing any buttons except for the navigation entries (it automatically already navigates to work in mornings and home after the work). And changing the temperature can be done via voice or simple swipe on the temperature indicator on the screen.
