    Omg I’m planning a solo trip and had originally booked an Airbnb as well. It was so beautiful and had great reviews. Less than a month before the trip I started getting this strange feeling. I just didn’t have peace about it. Something was just telling me it wasn’t safe. I followed my intuition and decided to book a hotel. Afterwards a strong sense of peace came over me. INTUITION IS #1. God was protecting me from something!

      @@KRodCollective yeah I can put up with him in short doses but I can't travel with him. He wanted to sunbathe all day either at the hotel or on the beach and drink all night till morning like 7am. I wanted to get up early and explore. Experience the culture, eat at nice restaurants and have just a few drinks in the evening. I've learned that its best to solo travel. I dont think it matters who I go with even if it was a partner or wife it wouldn't be as fun.

      @@garyrobinson8665 Great point Gary. Travelling with others is not always fun. You feel pressurized to do things someone else's way. At the moment, I am travelling in Croatia and every day I just do what I want to do, when I want to do it, and how I want to do it. No pressures, just freedom. It can get awkward when dining alone at night, other than that I am having a great time. Last month I travelled to Jamaica and had a blast. Made so many friends and memories. I gave up my job to explore the world and spend more time on my own development. Its been great so far

    Don't stay too near train stations, in my (female) solo travels, areas around train stations have many homeless people (mostly males) and generally speaking, what looks/sounds like people with mental health issues. I try and look as androgynous as possible (I'm 5' weigh 110 lbs; I'm not a big person) and never tell anyone I'm on my own. I've stayed in Airbnb's solo without any problems but I don't tell them I'm travelling solo. I say my partner is out looking for something, eg. buying a sim card, a parking spot, a pharmacy etc. I book mostly day tours with tour companies in those countries and have encountered no problems. I do lots of research before I go, have paper and google maps, stay at places that are on the same street or a street near the Ritz Carlton, Hyatt, Four Seasons etc. I love the freedom of solo travel.

    I took the plunge and did my first ever solo travel to Japan for two weeks. I fully agree on social etiquette in a foreign country...respect the culture and the people, and you will get respect back in return. Experienced a lot of bowing in Japan, so whenever someone bowed to me, I bowed back in return. I did notice a few stares on local transports since I am a person of color, mostly from some elderly folk, but this did not bother me one bit...just learn to ignore and not take any offence as I am sure some of these folks have probably never left the country and never interacted with a person of color before. As a solo tourist to Japan, I also chose to register my arrival with the Canadian consulate...you just never know. Also Whatsapp and a good wifi connection are your friend...I always kept my family apprised of my whereabouts every morning before I went solo-sightseeing, including giving them the number of my hotel or Airbnb just in case .

    YOUR LAST ADVICE MEANS so much to me …Pushing 50 years old of age you become more and more fearful…. And I hate that. No matter if your a woman or a man . Fear is in your head and the next thing you know that fear might take control over your life… I’m planning my first solo male travel at the age of 50 , and I’m so nervous about it that is producing a lot of anxiety. I really appreciate your good vibe and energy, and that last positive, beautiful advice means the world to me…

      Hiiii!!! Firstly, thank you for watching! Although I’m not 50, I totally understand the idea of becoming more fearful as you get older. There are so many things I did 10 years ago without thinking twice that now I’m like “Hold up, wait a minute.” 😂😂C’mon solo male trip! I love to see it!! Good for you!! Try not to let the fear consume you. You are braver, stronger, and more capable than you know. Remember to use your street smarts, do exhaustive research, and trust your gut! You got this! If people asked me if I was by myself, I just told them that I was meeting friends at another hotel. All of my excursions were done during the day. I’ve only solo traveled around America and the carryover is so similar!! I’m super excited to really explore the world love the vid thanks for the tips! Also as a side note: I’ve on multiple times have found myself in some SKETCH situations, but as a man I’ve honestly never felt unsafe; even one time in florida walking down what seemed like a homeless hostel of a street at 2am without a hotel 😅that night was interesting to say the least. Crazy the difference in treatment a man gets over a women.

    Hey this was sooo helpful wow! The first thing about your laptop helped me . I tend to carry a lot at once and for me I know I need to pack evrything away before walking around. This will also keep me off my phone and alert!
    Next the arrival and departure! Wow didn’t even think of thattttttt I really wanted to leave Catalina Island at night in order to have a full last day but you are right! Danger waits at night! I’ll def make sure I’m gone by afternoon and back home by night! I am extremely grateful for this video !
    Another thing is the Airbnb when you talked about it I thought about the fact that at a hotel there’s lots of other people . If you need help you can find it! But an Airbnb is just you alone at a house. Could be harder to get help! Thanks for this

      Hi Zoe!! Yessss! That day, my stomach dropped. My laptop had my whole life on it at the time! 😩😬Yessss, sometimes it’s unavoidable to arrive/leave at night but if you can help it all, try not to. 💯on the Airbnb. Sometimes it’s just safer to stay in a hotel and if you need help, you can always call them. These days, I only stay at Airbnbs unless I really know the city well or I’m getting a good deal and have a good feeling about it. Safe travels to you! I’m glad this video could help! ❤️💕

      I do have to say, I had one super scary situation. However, I made sure to always be in highly populated areas before dark (which isn’t hard to do in Amsterdam this time of year). Thankfully, I knew what to do and found some really awesome “long lost friends” to help me out. Stay vigilant. Even the safest of places have some outliers.
      Overall, it was an amazing trip and I felt fully prepared. ❤️

    Fact is that sooner or later, if you are in a resort, people will know that you are travelling alone. They will see you alone daily and click on within a few days that you are solo travelling. You can't avoid this. This is when you are more likely to be targeted if an unscrupulous person or persons happen to be staying in your resort. Personally I wear a fake engagement and wedding ring. This may persuade some people to think that your partner is out there with you, but maybe he is on business while you relax. It's always best to stack up barriers to being targeted. I know that sounds paranoid, but if you are a young or attractive woman, you just have to be even more aware of your surroundings. There are many upsides to travelling alone; you are not needing to please someone else or make compromises, you just do as you want and when you want. The downsides can be eating alone at night. This is when the stares and comments emerge. Trust me, you will be stared at or commented on sooner or later, this is unavoidable and it's something that you need to prepare for and get hardened to. Male solo travellers probably will be treated with the same curiosity or disdain. For me, travelling to the Caribbean countries alone has always been a pleasure, but I find southern European countries more difficult because their customs are often more conservative, aloof or family-centric. I started traveling alone for my job in the 1990's and it trained me well for later life when I am on vacation alone. Most middle aged women I know would never travel alone and they admit it. They are too embarrassed and/or too scared. Do not be either, embrace life and travel, we are only here once!

    Funny note on keeping track of your stuff. I was disembarking on a domestic flight recently and saw some ladies corralling their kids and a small dog. One lady was telling their little girl "make sure you are holding your tablet, dont lose it" as she was walking away from her own tablet and phone in the seat back pocket. I yell hold on and scrambled to grab it for them before they kept scurrying away. We all had a good laugh about the irony

    You advised not to tell people when you are traveling solo. In the past, I slipped and told a few people when I was traveling alone. Thank God no harm came to me. In your video, I was waiting to hear examples of what you would say when asked. I could see it being easier to make something up if you’re not likely to see the person again during your trip. In situations like an all inclusive resort, it could be harder to pretend your not alone if you cross paths with the same people at the facility.

    • @KRodCollective
      @KRodCollective  Год назад

      Yes, I’ve done the same. It all depends on the context. I’m going to make a separate video about what you can say instead. Yes, sometimes it’s hard to avoid making anything up because it’s obvious that you are alone. But sometimes I do make things up.

    Unfortunately most of the cheapest flights, buses and so on are night ones. And in some countries the public transport has very unpredictable timing. You may arrive too late, too early and whatnot.

    I've traveled solo multiple times. I'm going to London, and then back to Edinburgh in a month. I'm off to Cozumel over my break five weeks after that. I've traveled solo to Israel, Senegal, Kenya/Tanzania on a safari, Fairbanks to see the Northern Lights, Yellowknife, to see the Auroras there too, Montreal, Las Vegas, plenty of places in Europe, Ecuador, Cancun area, Malta, Costa Rica, along with multiple trips here in the US to solo backpack or camp. I've even done solo canoe trips. I've been to other places too. I've had young women latch onto me on these trips as well. They were solo travelers as well. I think that they deemed me as safe. I am I suppose. I am 6'3", 250 lbs and an Army Veteran, who has spent time in a war zone. They loved that no men were bugging them when they would be with me. Even when I've backpacked solo, young gals have asked if they could camp near me.

    Everyone keeps saying don’t tell anyone you’re traveling alone, which is a safe choice but nobody ever says what they say when asked. Do you just say “No” and change the subject or do you say your husband is in the room? Why or why not? 🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @KRodCollective
      @KRodCollective  Год назад +22

      This is such a great comment! For me, it depends on the situation. Sometimes I try to feel out their motive for asking and go from there. I will lie if I have to and say I’m traveling with friends or my family is with me or something like that. Or I’ll even flip it back on them, again depending on the situation. Sometimes I’ve met other solo travelers like in a hostel or Airbnb and then the jig is up, but it’s okay because we both end up exploring whatever city together. But I still don’t let my guard down either way. I hope this makes sense. Maybe I should make a video about this. I really think this needs to be talked about more. 💕

    I woke up near Barcelona at a friend's house. He offered me a ride to the airport but I thought I was so cool and smart, I turned him down and went alone, making one after another stupid decision all morning. End result: I missed my flight. My super-great online travel agent helped me get another flight at 6 the next morning, through Istanbul. I knew that if I went anywhere to sleep, I'd miss that next flight, because how do you get to the airport at 3 am for a 6 am flight in a foreign city when the only words you know have to do with food??? So I spent the night in the Prat airport, not sleeping. Then I didn't sleep all the way to Istanbul, a few hours layover, a long sleepless flight home with crying babies, and a 2 hour drive home. The moral: say yes.

    I've been researching accommodation for my London trip. I also noticed that the hotels are kinda pricey and the cheaper ones are a bit far from city center. The hostels are cheap but I don't like the idea of staying with strangers. I also don't like the idea of using a shared bathroom even as a guy. How was the public transit in London? I used transit in Toronto last year and felt that it was OK but I lost a lot of hours waiting for late buses. I used transit for longer distances and then walk as long as I could before using an uber if necessary.

      I stayed outside of the tourist area in London. If you don’t mind using the tube there are some really nice hotels. I just stayed closer to the airport- more of a business area. But very nice and manageable.

      Hi there! Sorry for my late response. In my opinion, London has one of the best public metro systems in Western Europe. If you've ever been to NYC and used the subway, The Tube is 100X better, again, IMO. The issue is, the city is so dang big and expensive that it kind of gives you no choice. I would take the Tube over an Uber due to traffic, etc. Have you considered hostels with single rooms? Those can be great sometimes too. 💕

      @KRodCollective  Год назад

      Agreed! I usually stay in Southeast or East London. Super easy to take the Tube and lots of places to explore in those areas. 💕

      Londoner here, definitely stay outside the centre you'll get a nicer experience, you'll immerse yourself in London more. Our London tube networks is so easy and gets you anywhere very quickly, very fast and reliable. Yeah I get you on the hostel thing, sharing a bathroom room with others is not nice.

      Do it, Book a nice hotel and plan your itinerary and you'll be fine. Be careful at night though and stay in busy areas. I went to NYC alone a few years ago. I really enjoyed it

    Have you read “The Gift of Fear”
    Book by Gavin de Becker? It’s a great read, especially for anyone looking to travel alone. Or just life in general.

    Hey @KrodCollective When travelling solo for when you are booking hotel do you book book a room for two or one?

    • @KRodCollective
      @KRodCollective  5 месяцев назад

      Hii!! That’s a really good question. It all depends. Sometimes I look if there’s a single occupancy fee or if it is more expensive to book with 2 ppl or not. If it’s not, I’ll book for 2. Other times, if I am pretty secure in the area being safe and good, I’ll just book for one. It also depends on the kind of hotel as well. Fantastic question! 💕Hope this helps!

      Hi Tateeaunna!! Yes! Sometimes I do. It all depends on the trip. But if I’m traveling by myself sometimes I’ll do excisions and tours and things like that to get out and experience it and also meet some people. Hope this helps! 💕

    What are some of the lines you use to not let people know you are travelling alone? Especially if your staying at a hotel or hostel where some of the friends you make or bump into multiple times can clearly see you haven't been with anyone? I always have a hard time coming up with those lies and I tend to say I'm travelling alone, which now I know is a big No NO but luckily I never had any issues and ended up making some great friends especially cause they feel kind of bad that you are alone and look out for you more.

    yup. when your spideysense tingles GTFO. Great tips. Also a great tip about if the locals dont do it-dont do it. In 2023, as a solo traveler I do not do airbnb. Too many weirdos who ALWAYS have access to their home. Hotels have major discounts especially if you book far out. You can get a hotel room as cheap as Airbnb these days.

      Hi Billy! Yessss!!! Get out of those spidersenses are tingling! Yes, I find myself staying in them less and less. Hotels just offer better deals and more protection and safety in comparison these days.
