The game was extremely more physical in Jordan's day. Not even close to the current game. Anyone remember the Piston's "Jordan Rules"? Try that today and you'd have 4 players ejected before the fans were finishing their first beers in the first quarter.
That's the point. 4 players would be ejected because they're committing super hard fouls on the regular. The Pistons were kinda overrated defensively because they would physically bully you defensively rather than clamp you up with skill. Hard fouls does not mean more physical game of basketball.

JJ said guys had hands on Curry at all times but in denial that hand-checking and elbowing to front your man was legal during Bird's era. Yes, JJ, I'm sure teams were leaving Bird wide open when hand checking was legal lol.
As a former EMT, I take a real issue with some pampered rich kid who wants to say 'firefighter' like it's a bad name. I think that just shows the ridiculous entitlement of JJ Redick. As an EMT, I saw the long hours those guys put in, not just on duty, but also at the station house, on-call, away from their families. I don't think JJ or his family know what it's like to go to work with the possibility that you might not come home again. I've seen firefighters that were seriously injured (thankfully none who died) in the line of duty from vehicle accidents, inhalation burns, etc. When your house catches fire, or one of your loved ones is in an emergency situation, it's the firefighters and EMT's that are flying down the road, risking their lives to try and help you. When you have a medical emergency, it's an EMT or firefighter that will be giving their 110% to try and stabilize you enough to get to the hospital. So make whatever points you want about the NBA. But don't talk down to the people who are doing a real job, out there risking their lives to try and save others. In my eyes, that's completely unacceptable and uncalled for.
One of the most cooked comments I read on here lol. I'm a nurse, I'm proud of what I do too. With that being said, I can't imagine any universe where I can be a nurse and still also play highly competitive basketball and train for it daily. It's impossible. And the result is that I would play terrible basektball, which is basically what Reddick is saying, that they weren't actual basketball professionals, which is true. They are professionals in their own field and should be proud of it and respected for it, but it doesn't mean they're entitled to be hailed as amazing basketball players when they've obviously committed their life and true passion to something else. No-one is talking bad about EMT's or firefighters inherently, he's talking about how they aren't actual basketball professionals, and that's what you'd expect to find in the the 'National Basketball Association' League. It's not that deep
@@TrueGuardifyyou gotta understand that back in Cousy’s time, there was no such thing a a “sports professional”…at least not as a respectable occupation. You lost all the context in what he was saying. He never talked down about firefighters or plumbers. He was saying that the athletes of the 50s and 60s were the same level of athletes as today. They didn't train with idea in mind that basketball or other sports were their sole profession. Many of the basketball players from back then held actual day jobs, like firefighters and plumbers. Imagine LeBron, Steph, or KD play ling against an EMT or teacher today. There was no shade being thrown. You have to have the context.

95% of the game back then was from midrange and posting. How can this be less physical? The game was slower, the offense was more compact and there were always players around. Now that the floor is spread due to the prevalence of 3pt shooting is when the game became less physical.

@TrueGuardify Magic lol! What's the point of the question? Most NBA players, even in the 80s, were athletic af. The difference is, they were also skilled. This whole notion that NBA players are so much better now cuz everyone is bigger, stronger, faster is completely false. 1. The 80s and 90s were full of freak athletes 2. Skills trump athleticism, i.e. Luka, Jokic.
@@semaj06 Lol in what way is Magic's athleticism comparable to Jokic and Luka? Their athleticism is their combination of strength and balance. The only thing they got in common is being great playmakers. Straight up most players in the 80's and 90's are not close to current level athleticism. With advancements in science and social media/access to information it's not even their fault, that's just the way it is. Hell 10 years ago a 60kg bench for a guy was a head nod. Now no-one really cares if you can bench 100kg. Why? Because social media has set expectations of what is possible and information on how to get to that point is readily accessible. Also players are paid way more now, which means they are incentivised to take care of their bodies and train properly more, which means people are gonna be stronger and faster. Also because the pay is better, there is more competition to get into the NBA, which means there is a higher pool of players trying to get into the NBA, which means there is a higher portion of athletic freaks who are trying to become NBA players, which leads to more athletic players in the NBA. Now, 100% athleticism is not the be-all/end-all. Jokic and Luka are the best players in the League and being able to run and jump like a freak doesn't make you a good player. But to say players in the 80's and 90's were athletic freaks compared to today is just wrong and inaccurate for the reasons I just said. Picking out exceptions like Patrick Ewing or Hakeem doesn't hold up overall.
@TrueGuardify Magic, like Bird, Luka and Jokic is not very athletic. He is just very skilled. Thats what. Hakeem, Ewing, Dominique, Drexler, Barkley, Kemp, David Robinson, and of course MJ, just to name a few. All these people would be cream of the crop in today's NBA as far as athleticism. I never denied that the NBA is generally more athletic now. My main point is that it doesn't matter. Jokic and Luka is proving that basketball is a skill game. This is true even in combat sports. So to say that older eras are full of plumbers and firemen is just dumb.
@@semaj06 And again literally all these players you're talking about are all-nba all stars. Compare today's role players athleticism to 80's and 90's athleticism. Just because a select few were actually dedicated to the game of basketball with strong bodies that they worked to maintain doesn't mean everyone else was, not like today.
He wasn't a all star but a good shooter.. you can say Jerry west was better for his era than jj was for his without sounding like a hater... When it was him and cp3 people were saying best backcourt in the league.
The quality is by definition watered down when you expand the number of teams. There are currently a lot of bad teams in the NBA. The gap between great and bad gets a lot closer if the good players on those bad teams are put on the good but not great teams.
@@hakeemolajuwon4352 I don't know how to break this to you, but if the NBA expanded to 100 teams, then every player on those 100 teams who get paid to play basketball would, by definition, be professional caliber.
@@hakeemolajuwon4352 My logic is airtight. If the NBA had 20 teams, then each team would have more quality because the 10 teams that no longer exist would have their good players on the 20 teams that still exist. More teams means a dilution of the talent. How can it be any other way?
@JackSchitt-p9t Players develop. Teams develop. Do you know how many great basketball players don't make the NBA just in this country alone? Did you know they added 10 teams during Wilt's era, did that water down his era?

The game was extremely more physical in Jordan's day. Not even close to the current game. Anyone remember the Piston's "Jordan Rules"? Try that today and you'd have 4 players ejected before the fans were finishing their first beers in the first quarter.
That's the point. 4 players would be ejected because they're committing super hard fouls on the regular. The Pistons were kinda overrated defensively because they would physically bully you defensively rather than clamp you up with skill. Hard fouls does not mean more physical game of basketball.
So you would rather players just do what they want to each other with no rules??

JJ went from most likable man in media to least likable so fast
He used to just glaze players and let them off the hook when he had a podcast. He is a over protective parent to this new league

He's never been likeable to me.
Bro has never been likeable, you should look up his track record and you'll see he's been disliked for a long time since Duke University
The only reason some people liked him was because he was "owning" SAS and others during arguments on ESPN. That's also part of the reason why some people thought that he was "smart"
But it's really not that hard to make yourself look "smart" when you're on a show on ESPN with a bunch of idiots who only know how to shout.

Yup, it's klutch media. He has his yes men/women on tv there disrespecting MJ and belittling his competition just to prop up LBJ. They praise this era so much so when LBJ loses it gets excused, trash MJ's era to suggest he faced "plumbers". Only LBJ groupies fail to realize this or don't want to.

WNBA is more physical than the NBA rn, tbh.
That's kinda his point. They got the crap beat outta em but it wasn't more physical because the "physicality" was just hard ass fouls. It wasn't skill or anything of the like. They wanted to play football instead of basketball and tried to make opponents hurt rather than defend them by moving their feet. There's video.Again we are told don't believe your own eyes. Everything is backwards today. No accountability no consequences, lies make you money. Truth and facts means nothing in America today.
🤜🏼🤛🏽❤
@@TrueGuardifyyou gotta understand that back in Cousy’s time, there was no such thing a a “sports professional”…at least not as a respectable occupation. Back then the salaries were comparable and teachers have a longer career expectancy…🙂👍🏾
This the dumbest shit I ever read.
The funniest thing to me is that JJ's career would be the equivalent of someone like Steve Kerr during that era. He talks like he's sn authority on all things basketball, like he had any sort of game changing impact throughout his career, like Kerr did.
And to be very very specific he means the playing career of Steve as s role player not the hall of game coach he went on to become
Even so Kerr actually had some game winning shots that were very important. I don’t think JJ ever even did anything to seal any type of game lmfaoo but yet he talks like he was a superstar in the league

JJ + Lebron + Lakers. The most hated team in NBA. No wonder the product is broken.
You could mug someone on the court in the 80's without a foul called. You can't lightly brush Curry without a foul call.
Lmao. Steph gets the worst whistle in the league. I agree 100% that the 80s were tougher, but you're a clown if you want to use Steph as the example for today. Try one of the foul grifters like Shai, LeBron, Embiid.

Jokic and Luka basically destroyed JJ's "plumbers and firemen" BS. Those 2 are prime examples that athleticism does not equal good in basketball.
Other than Larry Bird, name one player from the 80's who reminds you of Jokic and Luka's athleticism and dominance.
@TrueGuardify Magic lol! What's the point of the question? Most NBA players, even in the 80s, were athletic af. The difference is, they were also skilled. This whole notion that NBA players are so much better now cuz everyone is bigger, stronger, faster is completely false.
1. The 80s and 90s were full of freak athletes

The quality is by definition watered down when you expand the number of teams. There are currently a lot of bad teams in the NBA. The gap between great and bad gets a lot closer if the good players on those bad teams are put on the good but not great teams.
The only way that's true is if the NBA was all of a sudden filled with players that weren't professional caliber, which never happened in the NBA.
@@hakeemolajuwon4352 I don't know how to break this to you, but if the NBA expanded to 100 teams, then every player on those 100 teams who get paid to play basketball would, by definition, be professional caliber.
@JackSchitt-p9t that's not what happened tho. That may be how you rationalize it, but that's not what happened
