This is such a fun song from 1988 that brings back good memories! Neneh's brother is Eagle-eye Cherry and he had a huge hit in the nineties with Save Tonight!
Neneh was born and raised in Sweden to a Swedish mother and an American jazz musician father. But she lived both in New York and later in London in her youth, which is why she has both accents down. And she was based in London when she launched her solo career, working with British musicians and producers, one of which was her then husband. Her sister Titiyo never had the same international career, but is at least as good in my opinion. Her debut single Talking To The Man In The Moon is in my view competing for best song of 1989. Warmly recommended. Titiyo never left Sweden though, and has worked exclusively with Swedish musicians, writers and producers.
Hey Jay from Rob Squad Reactions, I just saw your review of “Buffalo Stance” by Neneh Cherry, and I had to share how much this song meant to us back in the day! As a young teen in the ’80s, this track was super cool and so fresh-it really captured the vibe of that era. Even today, whenever my friends and I throw a house party and drop this tune, everyone’s up dancing and singing along. It’s timeless! If you enjoyed this one, I hope you check out a couple of other amazing songs by Neneh Cherry. “Manchild” is another classic-it’s a soulful, introspective track with a heartfelt message of resilience and encouragement, blending her signature hip-hop and R&B style. Fun fact: In the music video, Neneh is seen holding her young baby, Mabel, who has grown into a successful artist in her own right today. Also, her collaboration with Senegalese artist Youssou N’Dour on “7 Seconds” is phenomenal. It’s a trilingual masterpiece (in English, French, and Wolof) that delivers a powerful message of unity and innocence. It was a massive hit in the ’90s, topping charts around the world, and it still resonates today. Thanks for highlighting such an iconic artist, and I hope you get a chance to explore more of her music-you won’t regret it! Rich from the UK👌🏽
Her breakthrough hit in the UK,it sounded like nothing else and soared to number 3 right at the tail end of 1988. Only all that Neighbours-SAW stuff kept it off the top. The slower, introspective Manchild was a big hit for early a few months later in the early summer of 1989. She had at least a couple more medium-sized hits in the early 90s and the duet 7 Seconds with Youssou N'Dour slow-climbed the chart to eventually reach number 3? in the later half of the summer of 1994; I was working night shifts in Wembley at the time and they kept the radio on all night so I got to know many more hits from that time* inside out. But Buffalo Stance is far and away my favourite of hers, such a blast! *Wet Wet Wet's version of Love is All Around from the Four Weddings and a Funeral occupied the number 1 spot all summer long for a mammoth 15 weeks! They were already playing the song that would eventually knock it off,Saturday Night by Whigfield, for weeks before it finally charted in September. A couple of groups scored huge debut hits: a band called Let Loose with a song called Crazy For You (not the Madonna one!) and Searching by China Black was a nice, summery tune. All 4 One hit big with I Swear at number 2 for weeks, and I quite liked Aswad's top 10 hit that summer,Shine. At the end of that summer, with Britpop rising,Oasis hit the top 10 for the first time with Live Forever,Blur at least their third (after There's No Other Way,Boys and Girls) with Parklife, while pop poppet Kylie returned with Confide in Me.
Neneh is too, too beautiful! Loving that playful sass! I haven’t seen this video in forever and ever! Loving her! She and Eagle-Eye Cherry are the children of Jazz trumpet player and band leader Don Cherry, RIP, and Swedish artist Moki Cherry.
She is the stepdaughter of Avantgarde jazz trumpet legend Don Cherry. I saw her live 0:16 in 1981 when she was the singer for a kind of post punk jazz hybrid group called Rip Rig and Panic. Her stepdad sat in with them on trumpet.
Her stepdad was friends with tennis player and Danish music writer Torben Ulrich. When Neneh was young she hung around with Torbin's son Lars, the future drummer in Metallica.
The wild thing is this song is as unique today as it was when it came out. Oh, such great memories of dancing to this back in the day...Also, Lovin' your Rodman T-shirt today!
I remember when this came out, I was a teenager I also remember her brother was in the industry too his name was Eagle eye cherry, plus Neneh's daughter is a singer now too her name is Mabel McVey. Neneh is now 60 years old but doesn't look yet age. Neneh's real full name is Mendy Mariann Karlson. Another great song of her's is called Manchild great song too. 😊👌🏻
Yes, "Trout" is an absolute killer track, other fantastic songs by Neneh Cherry (besides from "Manchild" and "7 seconds" that are often mentioned) are "Move with Me" and "I got You under my Skin" (the last one testing Your bass equipment... ;) )
Her father was one of the greats of modern jazz from America but settled in Sweden. Neneh is a unique mix of Sweden, England and New York city. I first saw her (fell in love) in a post punk band Rip Rig and Panic. Her father, Don, was a brilliant trumpeter and made amazing music mixing jazz from America and Africa.
One important point about Neneh is her ‘pedigree’, as daughter of a jazz trumpet legend, her father Don Cherry. He was a major figure in what was known as the avant- grade movement, often called free jazz. Met him on a bus to the airport in Turkey. I was excited having heard him play the night before in a festival we were in. All he talked to me about was his daughter’s album was comin out. Not sure if it was Buffalo Stance which i think was her 1st but wow, I’m just realizing this had to be over 30 years ago, maybe like ‘92, Akbank Jazz festival. We still had cassette tapes back then😅. He gave me headphones like, ‘Here, check this out’. Don was a chilled out almost eccentric character, so it was really way cool to see how excited he was for his daughter. The only other video I’ve seen of hers is for a song from a later album called Kootchie…um, yeah.👍🏾
Don Cherry is her step-father. Neneh Mariann Karlsson in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of Monika "Moki" Karlsson (1943-2009), a Swedish painter and textile artist, and the musician Ahmadu Jah (1936-2018). Jah was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, the son of a tribal chief, and went to Stockholm to study engineering at university. Her parents separated soon after her birth and her mother married the American jazz musician Don Cherry, who helped raise Neneh. She took her stepfather's surname. Her half-brother, musician Eagle-Eye Cherry was born when she was four. From stepfather Don Cherry's side, she has a stepsister, violinist Jan Cherry, and a stepbrother, jazz musician David Ornette Cherry. Through her father Ahmadu Jah's marriage to Maylen Jah (née Bergström), Cherry is the half-sister of singer Titiyo and record producer Cherno Jah.
This is my childhood, okay i was 3 when it came out but my family was always listening to the radio, watching Top of the pops here in England. Those late 80's early 90's dance techno rap songs were at the top of there game. Manchild and 21 Seconds were also brilliant. I love Buffalo Stance ❤ listen to it alot
This hit 1989 song samples Malcolm McLaren's 1982 "Buffalo Gals," another big UK hit that you would also like. I know Cherry is Swedish, but she was based in the UK when this song was popular and people thought of her as being British. You mentioned Queen Latifah, and a song of hers from this era that would be ideal for Female Fridays is "Ladies First" from 1989.
Yes, she is from Sweden but resides in the UK. She has been HUGE over there for decades. This song was the only one with any real success in the US market. She had a few that came over but not with the punch this one had. I fell in love with Neneh Cherry at 10 years old thanks to this video.
@@elcorado83 We are many with different english accents but lives in Sweden, obviously you can not read as well... I wrote she have home both in Sweden and England. Otherwise you can ask her yourself instead of spreading lies.
After "Buffalo Stance" came "Manchild", also a big hit. Producer Tim Simenon was one of the producers of her sound. He is also the man behind Bomb The Bass. If you check out "Winter in July" you won't be disappointed
This came out at just the right time when I was growing up. Had no idea who her jazz legend dad was at the time. And then her brother came along later. Another interesting thing is that she was part of the British punk/post punk band The Slits as a young teenager in the early 80s.
Another song of hers to check out is Buddy X. And as mentioned her half brother is Eagle Eye Cherry (and check out his song, Save Tonight). His dad was was Don Cherry an American jazz trumpeter.
Her name is pronouned Nen-neh. Glad you found this, it's a classic. Woman, Kisses In the Wind, Feel It (and someone has already said Manchild) are also great ones by her.
"The Wild Bunch" mentioned near the end were a UK hip-hop act, they changed their name to Massive Attack and had several hit singles and albums, Unfinished Sympathy is a tune well worth listening to. Bufallo Stance was produced by Bomb the Bass, another act worth checking out.
She’s Swedish, but grew up in London. Her best friend is a famous TV presenter who is in her videos, but wasn’t famous then. Try Manchild, 7 Seconds and Woman x
in the video the minute 44:44 the way she stands with her hands and her look is what the buffalo stance means in case you were wondering. she is good i love her and she is from the wonderful 80's. she had a great duet with a song named (7 seconds) and she had a great song named (manchild).
I always loved Nenah Cherry. She was born in Sweden but raised over here in the UK (hence the British accent). She was my school boy crush back when this came out. My young teenage self was a bit obsessed with her tbh, lol. I listened to the album ‘Raw Like Sushi’ every day, had her poster on my wall and would even dream about her. 🤣 Many years later, during my mid 20’s, I got to briefly meet her at Glastonbury festival and could barely speak from being so nervous. But she came across as a really nice person, so it was a great experience. Would love to see you react to some of her other songs. I’d recommend the music vids for ‘Manchild’ and ‘Kisses on the Wind’ (both from that same first album).
I knew you would have to get to this song one day. I always liked this song when it was out - she has a good voice, nice mix (as it was done in the "early days") of singing with some rap. I had no idea she was from Sweden & I had never seen the video either. She wasn't just a good singer, she was also gorgeous - especially her eyes. She could have been a model (unless she was too short) - if she had not wanted a singing career. Happy Friday to you too, J. & the rest of the RSR family.
Let me tell you lol I thought I was the coolest 12 year old there was when I memorized the words to this song and belted it out EVERY time it came on!! Such great memories!! You’ll love it, Jay!!
I haven’t heard this full song in quite some time! Hearing it makes me think of the chef Jamie Oliver, he had this as the theme song to one of his cookings shows. I love it!
Shocking. Never heard of Neneh Cherry. This iconic artist was HUGE all across Europe following the release of this single which was a huge hit. Check out a collaboration with Cher and Chrissie Hyde: Love Can Build A Bridge. This charity single had Neneh Cherry and Eric Clapton on the guitar too.
Neneh Cherry's sister Titiyo had a hit with the song "Come Along". Great song, covered by other artists including Pentatonix and Vicci Martinez. Give it a try Jay!
Totally awesome reaction. There are so many great artists from the 80s and 90s, sadly we dont really hear much of their music anymore. Neneh is one such artist, totally great. I has a catchy beat and loved it.
In 1989, 3D co-wrote Neneh Cherry's Manchild. This working relationship continued with Cherry helping Massive Attack to record their first album Blue Lines.
Her name is pronounced Ne - nuh Cherry. Her stepfather was/is jazz trumpet player Don Cherry and her brother is Eagle Eye Cherry who has a song called Save Tonight. React to her songs Manchild, Kisses On The Wind and Hearts please.
One of my favorite jams from the my college years. The female artists were killing it at this time...Deee Lite, Neenah, Tetnotronics,Taylor Dane...so fun
Little known Neneh Cherry fact... she was one of the first artists to collaborate with Notorious B.I.G. on her song "Buddy X (Falcon & Fabian Remix)" in 1992 when he was an unsigned, up and coming MC.
She mention Bomb the Bass in the song. you should try them aswell, with their songs like Beat Dis, Dont make me wait, Say a Little Prayer and Winther in July
Such a wicked track, the acid sound in the chorus is lush, one of my most fav 80s song.. I always though Nenah was American but no, i was wrong.. Love it
If you listen to "Woman" by Neneh Charry, you'll never believe it's the same person. Her music really started to mature after the song "Manchild", a song she released after the birth of her first child.
Her dad was an old school singer named Don Cherry. She has a brother, also a singer named Eagle-Eye Cherry. He had a song for you to consider called "Save Tonight "
Great song. The music is like an Epic poem. It goes so many places. I always forget how great it is. I really love how she throws that accent in their. As a kid, that really surprised me.
Aw!! My suggestion finally came up from several weeks ago. Love ya, man. Thx for checking her out. Fun to c u exploring all these tunes for the 1st time.👏🏼🫶🏻🫶🏻
Great memory. Man Child was another from her, a bit different vibe but as good. Another artist around the same time is Betty Boo (eg where are you baby) which you may enjoy..
Her song Manchild and 7 seconds are good
Love manchild.
7 seconds has the Indian holy man singing in it . Great song 👍
Fun fact...her brother is Eagle Eye Cherry who sings Save Tonight! A good 90's tune!
Save Tonight is a great song!
Much bigger career.
I saw Eagle Eye Cherry live in South Africa, I only recently found that fact out, I thought the band was called Eagle Eye Cherry, not one guy lol.

Wait till you hear her sing "Seven seconds away" Ah.. she's unforgettable
Such a super-fun unforgettable, quirky 80's tune!....was definitely a bop for sure.
Totally awesome reaction. There are so many great artists from the 80s and 90s, sadly we dont really hear much of their music anymore. Neneh is one such artist, totally great. I has a catchy beat and loved it.
try "KISSES ON THE WIND" or
"MANCHILD" or
"BUDDY X"❤
I remember when this came out. Nothing like it at the time. Still a jam!!
In 1989, 3D co-wrote Neneh Cherry's Manchild. This working relationship continued with Cherry helping Massive Attack to record their first album Blue Lines.
i saw a you tube video of her performing this song. she still looks great!
Her name is pronounced Ne - nuh Cherry. Her stepfather was/is jazz trumpet player Don Cherry and her brother is Eagle Eye Cherry who has a song called Save Tonight.
React to her songs Manchild, Kisses On The Wind and Hearts please.
This song always reminds me of elementary school, and it still bops to this day!
One of my favorite jams from the my college years. The female artists were killing it at this time...Deee Lite, Neenah, Tetnotronics,Taylor Dane...so fun
Kisses on the wind is another good song ❤
It was summertime, 1989. I had just graduated from high school, I was still 17. Lots of hits came out during this time. Make some noise clsss of '89!
That whole album was fantastic.
Nenah Cherry "MOVE WITH ME" is my favorite ❤❤❤
Little known Neneh Cherry fact... she was one of the first artists to collaborate with Notorious B.I.G. on her song "Buddy X (Falcon & Fabian Remix)" in 1992 when he was an unsigned, up and coming MC.
God this song takes me back to highschool so fun lol
Love can bridge is great to hear her voice
I remember this track all too well. Wonderful song from a very talented and gorgeous lady.
I have an 11 year old daughter and she vibes with my mom who was in her prime in the late 80s 😂 being the one in the middle is the best
Hit the Dance Floor in college in 1988 to this song!
She mention Bomb the Bass in the song. you should try them aswell, with their songs like Beat Dis, Dont make me wait, Say a Little Prayer and Winther in July
I was a DJ back in the late 80s! You were missing out on a lot of these gems! That when we carried our own records in crates. Those were the daze!
Such a wicked track, the acid sound in the chorus is lush, one of my most fav 80s song..
I always though Nenah was American but no, i was wrong.. Love it
My friends & I loved this song❤😊 She didn't sound like anyone else at that time.
If you listen to "Woman" by Neneh Charry, you'll never believe it's the same person. Her music really started to mature after the song "Manchild", a song she released after the birth of her first child.
Takes me back to my Army days
Ty for your service❤🎉
Loved her in the day!😍Comes from a great music family.
Her dad was an old school singer named Don Cherry. She has a brother, also a singer named Eagle-Eye Cherry. He had a song for you to consider called "Save Tonight "
Don Cherry was a Jazz Trumpeter.
Bars for days!!! A hit as I was getting ready to graduate college. Good times!
Great song. The music is like an Epic poem. It goes so many places. I always forget how great it is. I really love how she throws that accent in their. As a kid, that really surprised me.
A banger of a tune! Loved this when it was released.
About time you got to this incredible song!
Aw!! My suggestion finally came up from several weeks ago. Love ya, man. Thx for checking her out. Fun to c u exploring all these tunes for the 1st time.👏🏼🫶🏻🫶🏻
Great memory. Man Child was another from her, a bit different vibe but as good. Another artist around the same time is Betty Boo (eg where are you baby) which you may enjoy..
this wasn't even one of my favorite songs on the radio when this is out and it's better than anything today
There are awesome songs from any year IMHO including this year. I'm loving Silvertwin and Young Gun Silver Fox right now.
