The Godmother of Triphop... the nurturer of The Bristol Sound. Eternal praise be to Neneh Cherry... she used the money she made off this release to fund Massive Attack's seminal Blue Lines album... when "Unfinished Sympathy" needed a real orchestra to play the string section because the synths "didn't sound right", she booked them a real orchestra... legend says, she even payed their rent so that they could focus on recording the album. All the love. 8)>
Hope she gets a decent cut of the record sale profits.
wow! thanks for the knowledge on this... I had no idea. it's a great tune and Massive Attack are a smart band -- good for Godmother indeed! peace.
@@frasercathygartside1356 The 'Wild Bunch' she references in the song are the pre Massive Attack graffiti gang/sound system in Bristol (including Tricky too).
@@garjones99 more knowledge! thanks
3D also wrote "Man Child" for her
Always liked this song. It’s just SOOOO “1989” if you know what I mean. I really like the guitar line that comes in for repeated outro chorus as well.
The single came out in 1988.
@@Danimal77 as usual tho didn’t get noticed/ clout till early “89...
@@Danimal77 But it became a hit in the US on mainstream radio and MTV, BET in late '89s, early '90. I remember, was in 6th grade back then. lol
@@joesmith8725 Yeah I remember this summer '89 or so! I could be wrong, it was on the Casey Casem top 40 for sure
It’s totally 1989…farewell to the 80s, intro to the 90s. Yet, it’s timeless.
It's gonna blow your mind when you find out she's Swedish.
Yup! I remember reading up about her. Though she moved to the UK I believe at an early age, some of her authentic Cockney accent shows through in the video. Around that time a LOT of Black Europeans would emulate an African-American accent in the music they made, as it was very popular at the time.
i thought she was english, thats a london accent
@@rikkimarsden1926 born Swedish but I think lived in London for a long time.
She from uk
@@Freshninja4 Born in Sweden,has a Swedish/African heritage,moved to the UK aged 15.
you should react to her 1994 single "7 seconds", that she sang with youssou n'dour. Another great and deep song
Great song x
YES!!! 7 Seconds, definitely a MUST!!!
Jeez, never knew that was her. I haven't heard that song in decades, but playing it back in my head it's obv her voice. Whadya know, eh?
They really should
One of my favorite songs. I love Youssou N’dour!! I also love her duet with The The’s Slow Train to Dawn.
An absolute classic! No one can possibly understand how unique and original this song was at the time it came out. Better yet it still holds up today.
It sure is!!!
As a white chick in the 80s and 90s, this shit HIT in a way I can't describe
Great song. Can't get tired of this. Brings back drunk dancing in college. 'Nuff said...:-)
This is a classic. Never get tired of this jam 🔥
Absolute belter of tune. And a great album. And Neneh Cherry, what a beautiful woman.
I forgot that this is the most late-80s thing that may have ever existed
It has such a catchy vibe. It's influenced by so many genres. Still sounds good today while unapologetically tipping its hat to the 80's. A guilty pleasure for sure.
"Hangin' with the Wild Bunch"... The Wild Bunch went on to become Massive Attack. Neneh paid their studio time to record the seminal Blue Lines album.
We have a lot to thank Neneh for.
Crocodile feet refers to shoes made from crocodile skins: pimps and players wore them back in the 80s.
The song title refers to "Buffalo", a group of photographers, models, musicians, hair and makeup artists, etc. formed by fashion stylist Ray Petri, of which group Cherry, Morgan, and McVey were all members. A buffalo stance is, Cherry told The New York Times, "an attitude you have to have in order to get by. It's not about fashion but about survival in inner cities and elsewhere."The song's title is also a reference to the Malcolm McLaren song "Buffalo Gals" (1983), which "Buffalo Stance" samples.Other samples came from Rock Steady Crew's "Hey You", and the saxophone break is from the band Miami's song "Chicken Yellow" (1974).
I was 14 years old when this came out, i still remember every lyric! Loved it then and still love it now.
" if they'd a cremated the sumbitch, I'd be chasing Mr bandits ass up around the moon by now" lol
This was from early '89, so it was freshman year of high school for me. If you think this was a shock to the system, check out Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam", which came out around the same time. House music from England and other parts of Europe was pretty big in the early 90s, and Neneh Cherry, Technotronic, and yes, Dee-lite, were part of that subgenre.
HA! Yes. 88-91 was a really cool time in music. Lots of genres for us Gen Xers. Soul II Soul, Information Society, EMF, Jesus Jones...things were really changing and expanding. I was a freshman then, too.
Cherry was born as Neneh Mariann Karlsson in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of Monika "Moki" Karlsson (1943-2009), a Swedish painter and textile artist, and the musician Ahmadu Jah (1936-2018). Jah was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, the son of a tribal chief, and went to Stockholm to study engineering at university.[5] Her paternal grandmother was called Neneh, and her maternal grandmother was called Mariann, a name she has never been referred to as.
Cherry's parents separated early and her mother married the influential American jazz musician Don Cherry, who helped raise Cherry since birth. Cherry took her stepfather's surname.[3] From her mother's side, Cherry also has a half-brother, musician Eagle-Eye Cherry. From stepfather Don Cherry's side, she has a stepsister, violinist Jan Cherry, and a stepbrother, jazz musician David Ornette Cherry. Through her father Ahmadu Jah's marriage to Maylen Jah (née Bergström), Cherry is the half-sister of singer Titiyo and record producer Cherno Jah.
In 1970, Cherry's parents, Moki and Don Cherry, bought and converted an old Swedish schoolhouse in rural Tågarp in Hässleholm.[6] In the early 1970s, the family moved to the United States, when Don Cherry taught at Dartmouth College.[7] In 1977 the family bought a loft in New York City in the same building as Talking Heads members Nick and Tina who they befriended. Cherry dropped out of school at 14 and moved to London.[8]
You forgot to mention she has very successful daughter and hit singer Mabel
I remember listening to this back in 1989 when I was in my second year of college, after leaving school at 16. I really liked this song at the time.
Now you have to do Salt N Pepa Push It.
I got hooked on this song in 1989 and it's still on my playlist today.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, me some Neneh Cherry!! ...nuf said!
I used to bump this song back in the day! It was one of the first compact discs I ever owned.
This song was huge back in the day, they played the hell out of it on the radio
“No money man, can win my love”
“It’s sweetness that I’m thinking of”
2 perfect lines right there. Check Lex out when the chorus hits, it gets her.
I love her duet with Matt Johnson of The The, another great 80’s band often overlooked. The song is called Slow Train to Dawn.
More personality in a 4 minute video than in 22 years of this millenium. Neneh was such a talent.
Back in the day, in the clubs lot's of the ladies would literally stand in a "buffalo stance" for the duration of this song, when it was played. I was only 12 or so when this came out, but this is what I later heard from some of my older friends, and later on RUclips videos reminiscing on when this jam came out in '88 or '89. My best friend's sister used to listen to this record in '89/'90. This brings back memories!
Buffalos are herd animals, so it's like when you and your friends stay close and confident when you go anywhere, as one impenetrable group. Like "make sure you have yourself straight before you approach me because my girls have my back."
Crocodile feet is alligator shoes.. Buffalo IS a tough, strong stance ..this song never , ever gets old
It obviously was a hit in Sweden since she and her brother live here, talking of....have you seen "Save the night" with her brother??????? Eagle-Eye Cherry. You will like it . It's a must.
loved watching Lex just LIGHT UP during the whole track... Neneh Cherry breaking thru for y'all all these years later.. good vibes!
This takes me back... Because I'm really old, I was in my last few school years when this came out. I found it a bit irritating then, as the girls in the class were into it, but now it's blissful nostalgia. I always thought Neneh was very pretty...
Love love love this one... Always on my top 100 Playlist...
When I was a youngster Bartending in the clubs..... asses were shakin' when the DJ played this chit.... fun times.... don't hate, you know you secretly wish you were there!
This song came out of know where and was huge in Australia and the UK in the 90s idk about the US. Neneh's other stuff was so different but I love this song. Pure 90s mashup.
This is what 1989 sounded like! She heavily samples Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Gals", an early Hip Hop staple! "Crocodile feet" refers to crocodile skin shoes (pinp stuff). A "Buffalo Stance" is folding your arms up high on your chest :)
Her dad is a famous musician called Don. She was also a member of the Slits for a short time too.
Classic tune! London club scene late 80's.
Those eye brow winks from Nenah always get me. Love it.
Played in all the skating rinks back in the day
buffalo stance from the urban dictionary/To stand with your arms tighly crossed looking over to side at somebody. This comes from the pose struck by Bruce Smith of the Buffalo Bills in the late 1980's
Omg neneh cherry was amazing I still got her original album on cassette when it was new since 1989
Lots of talk about her step father and siblings, but her daughter Mabel is also a successful singer
wow, i had completely forgotten this song, never knew her name and didn't remember it til the chorus hit. it got a lot of play back in the day, tho.
The chorus always gets me with her vocals over the synth line.
So many beautiful layers in all those tracks
A buffalo stance is, Cherry told The New York Times, "an attitude you have to have in order to get by. It's not about fashion but about survival in inner cities and elsewhere."
I was in Grade 9 in 1989. This song was all over the place.
My sister used to play this song every day after school back on the day!! Omg brings me back to the late 80’s early 90’s! Wow 😮
I can tell brad was mesmerised by her beauty..we all were 😀
The crocodile feet bit was great!
Is it just me, or does she look like if Brad & Lex had a daughter? Lol I didnt care for this at the time but I thought she was crazy cute and I grew to really like it! Never heard anything of her after this, til about 7 or 8 yrs ago when I was doing a deep dive into Trip Hop. She had some cool music!
Ok, now check out her brother, Eagle Eye Cherry and his hit "Save tonight". Talented siblings!
Haha! Y'all aren't familiar with a buffalo stance or doorknockers? (the earrings) Okay, kids, time to go back and learn your Hip Hop History! 😁
❤love 80's❤dance floor was packed and fun❤
Sucking beer through straws is supposed to help feel the effect of the alcohol quicker.
I do the dive every time We dance ! Yes, I recall that . I was the guy with the Crocodile feet!
True pioneer.
Manchild and I got you under my skin are both good tracks by Neneh Cherry.
One of the few top 40s songs I liked back then. I was a snobby high schooler, lol
always loved neneh cherry and this song ...
A true pioneer of women in hip hop. By the way has anyone mentioned that Mabel is her daughter?
Synth riff at 0:56 and into the chorus: fantastic!
Her dad Don Cherry was a brilliant jazz musician. Trumpeter.
Love Neneh I idolised her and Madonna during my teenage years thrashed her album Raw like Sushi still sounds great… still idolise her she’s so raw , sassy and original just beautiful
This is bringing me way back.
This was one of those songs that I liked, but didn't know why. LOL! Maybe it's just the catchy chorus. It's a bit off its rocker, but has a cool groove.
I remember I had just moved to my dad, 18 and rocking to this in VA
Whatever it means, it's always gonna be one of the coolest songs ever.
yeah I just watched this for nostalgia, such an awesome song
Lex reminds me a lot of Nenah Cherry in her prime; both caramel-colored goddesses.
And cute, too 😍 lol. Neneh and Lex
The track was made from the original: 'Morgan McVey - Looking Good Diving'. The group featured Neneh Cherry and Naomi Campbell. The whole band had all worked for 'Buffalo' magazine.
Tim Simenon was asked by one of the co-writers to rework it so it could be sung by Neneh Cherry.
The lyric "Bomb The Bass, Rock This Place" was a reference to Tim Simenon's project "Bomb The Bass" who was huge in the underground music scene at the time.
Check Out:
"Beat Dis"
"Megablast/Don't Make Me Wait"
"Say a Little Prayer" (feat. Maureen)
"Love So True" (credited to Tim Simenon)
"Winter in July"
"The Air You Breathe"
Tim called his project Bomb The Bass because his music production was 'bombing' the bassline with sample after sample.
Mick, as that you?
Step daughter of the late great jazz musician Don Cherry. This is one of those songs from that time that I liked then and still do. So, instantly likeable. The other track the comes to mind from this period that really rooted in my head was 'Poison' from Bell Biv Devoe.
No style rookie😁.....i always loved that line! LOVE that shirt Brad👍. I had a crush on Nena when this came out!!! Yup
You and every other teenage boy...she was/is a total spunk!
I have listend to this 30 years ago.
yes!!! this was so influential in my youth!!!!
edit: crocodile feet...expensive ass shoes made of croc skin
Buffalo Stance is when someone is standing with there arms crossed/folded together. Usually with your chest bowed up, looking big. I was there in the 80s, I know. Always watched this video on MTV when it came on.
reminds me of high school late 80's.
This whas huge in Europe!
I loved female rappers in the 80s and 90s.
I recommend you to listening to Roxane Shante, sharp as a knife.
It was released in '88 and corresponds to the emergence of Techno music (the 'acid' wave) in Europe. it's different from anything you know, it's "bare" and rhythmic but very interesting as a sound. I still hear my parents in the '80s yelling at me to turn down my 'savage music' they used to say in my room. To say that at the time we listened to music on Hifi amplifiers and huge multi-way loudspeakers, my Mother's trinkets would sometimes vibrate in the cupboards...
donc ceci:

Buffalo stance is a pose, arms crossed, looking tough, giving side eye to anyone who walks by.
Love the bass in this one
Loved the music in the 80s , SO much good music 🔥
Lex will like this one. Off her Raw like sushi album, Kisses on the Wind. Fun track!
great MTV video in the 80's.
It was a B-side to some non-hit. Then Tim Simenon (Bomb the Bass) got together and remixed it. And it became a song that still stands up today. And yes - it's about not wanting some guy you fancy to pimp u out on the streets.
Omg this was such a fun song when it came out. We loved singing it when it came on the radio😄
"You have.... buffalo cauliflower bites." YEAH LEX.... THAT'S IT! :)
Taking me back- we jammed to this big time as teenagers- well... if mostly you’re my age range- if you know, you know..😉😛🙃
The song title refers to "Buffalo", a group of photographers, models, musicians, hair and makeup artists, etc. formed by fashion stylist Ray Petri, of which group Cherry, Morgan, and McVey were all members. A buffalo stance is, Cherry told The New York Times, "an attitude you have to have in order to get by.
Back in that day guys had a variety of pastel colored suits, and they'd usually have crocodile shoes to go with them.
It's funny watching you peeps watching this stuff for the first time, when I don't see myself that much older than yous, yet this was my music at around 15.
Memories.
I really love this song. Neneh is great with an attitude that shows she is got humour and warmth in what she is doing. You nailed the meaning of buffalo stance. A great song is always a great song. I also like her song Manchild, It is different but good.
I forgot about this song. Great song
This puts me on the wildwood nj boardwalk back in 86 87 or in my room playing contra on nes my sisrter and her friends bumping this in her room i loved this song lolol,
Instead of Lex saying "Welcome to our channel" at the beginning of the videos, have Brad saying "Dont you get fresh with ME! Trust me...this is a no-brainer.
Crocodile feet is the dance move they are showing with the rainbow feet spreading apart and the buffalo stance is the boss stance
Im proud of Nene Jah. Amazing woman his late father came from Sierra-Leone. Of course am proud to say is my uncle came from Binti village in Sierra Leone.Amazing sister Tityo, daughter Mabel , brother eagle eye❤😂
Feb 1989 vintage vibes comin back... 👌👍😂
That's exactly what really cool music is for me!
Neneh Cherry has released a new Collaborative album Featuring Robyn, Sia and others doing covers of her songs :)..her brother eagle eyed cherry also a singer ..his song "save tonight"is worth a listen
She also had another brilliant song called manchild which was a banger
Huge song at the club once upon a time
