    Noise queries - we've asked Canon for permission to share this image from the camera. Here is an example image shot at ISO 6400 using the RF 800mm F11 IS STM lens. Please note that the image was shot on a pre-production sample camera. It's a 15.5MB file, so bear this in mind if you're opening it on your mobile!

    We think this is perfectly acceptable noise for ISO 6400... but decide for yourselves 😊

      I had a £4500 DCS5 which was a load of ****, after 6 months of losing customers Kodak/Canon sent 2 managers around to prove how useless I was. What a shock, the camera was faulty, however when they failed to sort it out I questioned why. "We were using a pre-production model, they are infinitely superior to the ones we sell" WHAT!

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад

      @@blisteringbooks2428 Wow, you're a very early adopter of DSLRs! The beauty of 25+ years of technological advances since then is that most issues are now easily addressed with firmware updates which end users can easily apply themselves at home. In our experience, pre-production models are either on a par with or only slightly inferior to final production models (usually they perform as expected, but may be a bit buggy). We had zero issues with the EOS R7 we used on the day. We have used many other pre-production cameras and things haven't always gone as smoothly! We would be extremely surprised if the full-production model wasn't of the same standard - in the digital world we live inwhere information and bad reviews spread like wildfire, it simply wouldn't be worth risking damaging Canon's reputation!

    For my use, this camera will be a great addition to my R6. Paired with my 100-500 I believe it will give me everything my R6 couldn’t namely longer reach without loss of image quality from the teleconverter. And not have to worry about the limited retraction due to the design of the lens coupled with the converter. I also don’t shoot 15 fps because I don’t like having to sift through 1000s of photos of which 95% I don’t keep. 6-8 are the most I need.
    Ordered mine the 1st hour it was announced. Can’t wait!

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад +1

      Ooh yes it’s a perfect second camera alongside an R6! Haha, that sheer number of images from 15fps can be overwhelming! I remember when 7 fps was considered very fast… and now with electronic shutter the fps are going up and up with every new release. Hope you’re not waiting too long for your pre-order and love it when you get your hands on it - Alex | Wilkinson Cameras

      @garrett1144 2 года назад

      Question for you and the reviewer, i'm on the fuji system (x-t4), I love this camera so much but, I'm wanting to get more into portraits, weddings, but also, sports and wildlife. Would you consider something like the R6 to be more well rounded for all of these scenarios or, would the new R7 for the price, fit the bill? I was also thinking of the sony a7IV.

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад +1

      @@garrett1144 If you're looking to shoot weddings then you'll need to consider low-light shooting and potentially silent shutter options too for more intimate moments. The R7 doesn't perform as well with the electronic shutter as it does the mechanical and its low light capabilities aren't as good as the EOS R6.
      For better depth of field, which you'll want for weddings and portraiture you're also going to benefit more from a full frame camera. This will bring in better low-light capabilities too. For this reason, we'd rule out the EOS R7 for your particular usage. It's great for sports and wildlife, but as you want a more rounded and high-end solution you'd definitely be better to consider the EOS R6.
      However, you've also expressed an interest in the Sony A7 IV, which does have the edge on the R6 when comparing side by side specifications, considering it's a similar price. Notably, the larger megapixel count will allow you to crop into images more in post-production and it has the edge on video features as well.
      I'd probably lean towards the Sony in this instance, but both the R6 and A7 IV are extremely capable cameras and will offer you vast improvements on AF compared to your X-T4, whilst ticking a lot of the other boxes on your list as well.
      www.wilkinson.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=sony+a7+iv
      www.wilkinson.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=canon+eos+r6
      Just to throw a spanner into the works... if you are happy with the Fujifilm system and the depth of field you're currently getting but want a more capable sports/wildlife option, then maybe have a look at the new X-H2S (see our latest video for a quick overview). We've not had the chance to do a full in-depth test just yet so I couldn't tell you how it compares to the A7 IV or the R6 in a real-world setting, but the AF is certainly impressive and you'd be able to use your existing lenses and stick to a system you already know and love.
      Hope this helps! Alex - Wilkinson Cameras

      @@WilkinsonCameras thank you so much for the info! There are so many advantages and disadvantages with some of these systems that I'm having a hard time choosing a new path to become more professional. I want something that will last me and be well rounded for portraits and things like wildlife shooting. I would love to get something like the eos r5 or z9 but thats not really in my budget haha. I love fuji, but I keep wanting to get another Canon since it was my first camera system I've used. Sony does have my attention though.

    So is there a battery grip to follow, and if so how will canon address the focus adjuster nib with the wheel, and before anyone say they don't need a grip as they never use one, lots of people do use them.

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад

      Hi Michael, there's no battery grip planned for this model from Canon (at the time of our reply anyway!) It's surprisingly light, even with an RF 100-500mm lens. I shot most of the day with this combo, a lot of the time in portrait, and it was fine for me. But I know that some people like grips and may be disappointed by this news - Alex | Wilkinson Cameras

It different from the first impression when we hold the 7DII back in 2014. Yes I know it full of features inside it, but it doesn't feel premium and special as 7DII was. One thing is the secondary screen on top of camera body.

    As a filmmaker, this looks like something I really want to upgrade to from my 200D. APS-C + under $2K + 4K60 no crop + CLOG + IBIS + dual SD? COUNT ME IN!
    This'll be amazing pairing it with my Sigma 18-35mm 😌

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Год назад

      DONT FALL FOR THE 4K60 no crop! Its utterly garbage, only 4k60 with (1,8x ADDITIONAL!!!) crop is usable sharp and nice in good light. But i would anyways go for 4k fine with 24 or 30 fps if you can, otherwise you are better off with the 1080p120 mode when you rely on uncropped usage or get a lens with less focal lengh to compensate for the heavy crop in 4k60
      I personally love the 4k60 crop mode, MUCH BETTER than the no crop mode and it gives me also with one of my short teles like the EF 100-400 II (dont try the Mk1, not even close to sharp enough...) something like 280-1150mm for wildlife video
      With my RF 800 F11 or even a Sigma 150-600C i can literally look at moon craters with 4k60 crop mode (1,8x) and advanced/Level 2 Digital Stabilizer (1,3x) (RF 800 *1,6*1,8*1,4= effective 3000mm!)

    Thanks for the great review. I moved from 800D to 90D and hated the 90D, so jumped to the R, which I love, but still prefer the reach the aps-c gives and have no pressing need for full frame. There has been some criticism of the control wheel and joystick layout, but not an issue with a move from the R. R5/6 are out of my league for price, so R7 is it. Decent 2nd-hand prices for the R should mean a less painful transition (for the wallet anyway).

    • @RevJohnOrr
      @RevJohnOrr 2 года назад +1

      @@666Tomato666 I just couldn't seem to get along with it. I had trouble getting consistency. When it was good it was very good but I had too many soft images for my liking. I use the EF 100-400 Lii and I know it's not a problem with the lens. Even on a tripod I got variable results. Maybe I just had a dodgy unit. But you know how it is, once you take against something it's hard to like it even when it behaves. I gave it a few weeks before selling it on for close to what I'd paid and moved to the R. Same lenses, pretty much same locations and type of images and my keeper rate was much better. I really think the 90D would have benefitted from IBIS and I'm hoping that the same density of sensor on the R7 but with IBIS will perform far better.

    Being a Canon 7D user; this new camera EOS R7 seems tempting to me for wildlife photography. However, when I think about pairing it with RF 100-500mm which seems to be the perfect combo; the price of lens is a turnoff. Compared to other similar telephoto zoom lenses, this one seems overpriced. Nevertheless, I would like to pair it with my existing EF 400mm f/5.6L + 1.4x converter via an adaptor to make it an 896mm prime at f/8 and enjoy shooting.

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад +1

      The RF 100-500mm is expensive, but we promise you won't be disappointed. It's an incredible lens. So sharp, well balanced, weighs less than the EF 100-400mm L II and a very versatile focal length. But your EF 400mm will also give you great results as you say :) Maybe in a few months you can pick up a second hand 100-500mm and save that way!

      R5 user here. Beware. My ef100-400Lii eye tracked focus on my r5 well, but... add the ef 1.4x iii and the eye tracking show often goes off the rails. I think canon has nobbled this setup. I watched Yellow tailed black cockatoos fly over, maybe only 15m above me, and the r5 wouldnt eye or even Ai body focus on these large birds with the 1.4x on. Very dissapointing. I took the 1.4x off, and the r5 eye focussed on the next birds likea champ.
      The next week I was using a RF 100-500 plus occasional 1.4x. Btw, the way the 1.4x locks the lens to 300 to 500 is very annoying.
      I do use the r5 + 100-500 + 1.4x + 105mm of extension tubes for 1:1 macro. The lens is 0.5m from the critters at 700mm mfd.

    Just a shame this camera doesn’t work too great with a Sigma 150-600 or a Tamron 150-600 . Coupled with an adapter it still works but you lose the eye detect focus ability 😔

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад

      There's no reason that you'd lose Eye AF with either of those lenses. Have you managed to test this somehow? They work fine with other models. Anecdotally it seems that Canon lenses focus a little faster, but the Sigma and Tamron work fine. We've not tested them ourselves on the EOS R7 obviously, or any of the other R models just now, but people use them just fine. Eventually (no idea when!) Sigma and Tamron will be able to license the RF Mount from Canon and will produce dedicated lenses for them. But we may be a long time off this just at the moment.

      It will be a really great choice for you and you'll have a lot more lenses to choose from as well thanks to the RF lens mount. Sadly you won't be able to use any EF-M lenses you have, but if you have EF lenses then you can use these with the included adapter (included for initial pre-orders and early stock only). The RF 100-400mm is an affordable, small and lightweight lens and well worth considering if you're looking to photograph wildlife.

    Hello Canon staff who might be reading this:
    Based on the specs, this camera is an OUTSTANDING value proposition: CLog3 in a US$1500 APSC camera is a huge shift in product strategy for Canon.
    I have, however, two pieces of advice for Canon: (1) be transparent about the RF APSC lens roadmap, and (2) release a RF to EF focal reducer / speed booster for the RF APSC mount.
    The reason for this advice is as follows:
    (1) The lack of RF APSC lenses available is currently the major weakness for the R7. A lack of certainty is what has stopped me and I expect others from buying into the EFM system.
    I currently use a 5D III and the lack of certainty about EFM mount caused me to buy a Panasonic G9 instead of a Canon M6 Mark II.
    (2) Many EF mount lens owners users (whether full frame or APSC) have a lot of EF lenses. A speed-booster will help us adopt RF APSC, while offsetting the depth of field disadvantage of APSC vs FF.
    I recommend Canon does not replicate its approach to the EFM mount, whereby it released a limited pool of lenses, provided no line of sight to its future intentions for the mount, and left users to buy speed-boosters from third party manufacturers to optimise the APSC mount using their existing EF lenses.
    Canon has already released a speed booster for the crop sensor C70. Will this work on the R7? If not, please release one for RF APSC mount so we don’t need to rely on third party manufacturers.

    I'll be keeping my 90D until I'm either sold on it or not, simples.
    The thing to remember is that we are all different, have different wants and needs, canon can only use market research to find out what they should develop next and that is what they're doing with the R7.
    You pays your money and takes your chances, simples.

      Not at all, because the Fuji X-T4 actually has lenses made for it. Unless you shoot only long telephoto using RF lenses makes little sense.
      Example portraits. On the X-T4 you have 2 excellent options. The XF56 F1.2 at 899 and the Sigma 56 f1.4 at 429,-
      On the R7 you'd be looking at the 50mm F1.2 at a whopping 2700,-
      The same applies throughout the range until you go long telephoto.

    What is the size comparison to the Eos R6?

  • @speedbird1598
    @speedbird1598 2 года назад

    As an R6 user. I am extremely disappointed. The R7 is a great camera, but the "7" indicated that it would be a mirror less 7DII. This is more of a cross between the M6II and 90D. The ergonomics are pretty bad. Odd dial placement, too few buttons, combining the Q and set button. The viewfinder of the EOS M series is what kept me away, and they kept the low spec viewfinder in what is supposed to be a prosumer camera. The sensor is unfortunately very noisy, keeping you away from higher ISOs. A real problem considering Canons choice to drastically reduce the apertures of their new lenses. Unfortunately, it is hampered by a very mediocre buffer. The 7DII was an APS-C 5D, which is what I was hoping the R7 would be to the R5. It would have been awesome to have a companion camera for my full frame R6 to give me extra reach. The Fuji X2HS is everything we wanted the R7 to be. Make no mistake, the R7 is a good camera, but it does not have an appropriate name. It should have been the R10 (Minus a few features to lower the price) and if Canon *really* needed a Rebel replacement camera, they should have made something akin to an RF M50.

      There’s no performance loss from the lens when using the Canon EF-EOS R Adapter. The aperture remains the same, AF capabilities are unaffected and continuous shooting in the camera is unaffected as well, so you’ll still get 15fps mechanical shutter.

    Hated the 90D sensor. Too many megapixels for the size of the sensor, resulting in grainy photos when cropped. And Canon's fast lenses remain heavy equipment. No thanks. I moved to micro 4/3rd.

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад

      Fast lenses will always be heavy as you need larger elements. But mirrorless cameras and new lens technology are allowing for smaller, lighter and better balanced lenses. The new Fujifilm XF 150-600mm (video on this coming soon!) is super-light for this type of lens thanks to new lens designs.
      There's very much a place for micro-four thirds though if you want small and lightweight kit. I certainly prefer taking my GH5 and lenses out on longer days, then I would a full frame Sony and lenses, for example! Unfortunately though, the faster lenses in the M43 system don't match up to full frame equivalents due to the reduced depth of field on smaller sensors. You also have to have faster lenses to really make up for the reduced low-light performance.
      Different horses for different courses! :)

      @@WilkinsonCameras I use Olympus E-M1X with 300mm F4 (601mm FF equivalent) sometimes + 1.4 MC. The reduced depth of field on smaller sensors are great benefit when you shot wildlife since you don't need to increase the F-number to focus the entire bird or animal. The same is valid for landscape photography. A smaller depth of field is only an advantage when photographing people, which is not my type of photography. So heavy full-frame lenses are an absolute no-brainer for me as a wildlife photographer.

      We didn't try that feature on the day (too much to fit into a short space of time!). Personally, I'd see it as an added level of precision to ensure that when you *think* the camera is level... it actually is - the on-screen levels in cameras can be frustratingly un-level at times as they're not super precise. The auto-levelling function should eradicate this minor niggle. I'd usually just straighten up when reviewing/editing images, but I have a weirdly accurate natural ability to get straight horizons anyway, so it's not really a feature I've been waiting my whole life for. When we can get our hands on the R7 for a follow up review and proper real-world testing, we'll check this out and see if it's life-changing or not! - Alex | Wilkinson Cameras

    • @WilkinsonCameras

      Where you will see big improvements compared to your EOS RP is with fast moving subjects. If you’re struggling to track sports or action or missing a lot of shots with fast subjects or taking lots of animal photos and want more accurate tracking, then the R7 will be a huge improvement. It has a massively improved AF system and can take up to between 15 and 30 frames per second, versus only 4 on the RP.
      Where the RP May outperform is in low light due to it being a full frame sensor.
      If you’re shooting a mixture of subjects and are happy with the RP, then maybe think about investing in some lenses for different needs.
      If you’re unhappy with fast action performance on the RP and want a good all-round camera for a reasonable price, then the R7 will certainly tick these boxes. Just consider that any lenses you have will have a different view on this APS-C sized camera. Their focal length will be magnified by 1.6. Hi Alan, we didn’t specifically test this - as the cameras we were testing were pre-production and we had two to test in a very short time, we couldn’t dive into this too much. I’ll have a look at the exif data at some of our low light shots from inside the woods and then dive into the image details and try to get back to you with the findings.
      The low light performance in the R6 will outperform the R7, simply as it’s a full frame camera. Also comparing the specs, the R6 far outshines the R7 when it comes to ISO and low-light capabilities. Maybe consider a 1.4x teleconverter (if compatible with your lenses) if you want to get more reach. You’ll lose a stop of light, but you are confident in your ability to shoot high ISO without issue and otherwise very happy with your R6, then this could be a great solution for you?

      That’s correct - at the time of our reply there is no battery grip coming. As a retailer, we can see the numbers of grips that are sold with modern mirrorless and can understand Canon’s reluctance to introduce one given the numbers that are likely to sell… which from simple economies of scale would make it comparatively expensive.
      If you always shoot portrait with a grip then it may well be that this isn’t the choice for you. As someone who never uses a grip, I found I could shoot portrait comfortably with the R7 and the 100-500mm lens with no issues. From the standpoint of bird photography, initially I thought the specs of the R7 looked great, of course the added reach of the 1.6x crop factor, the enhanced frame rate of 15 fps mechanical and 30 fps electronic, being even faster than my current R5, but unfortunately once I got to the card slots that was when disappointment struck. Basically, the choice of UHS-II over CFexpress Type B rendered the increased frame rate pointless due the extreme buffer limitations. On Full RAW you may be able to press the shutter for 2 secs at 15 fps mechanical and 1 sec at 30 fps electronic? No, that is just not enough for BIF I am afraid. Unfortunately, once you factor in the UHS-II card slots, the low res EVF and LCD, it is just not worth it. Price point is irrelevant here for these birders, it is about what they would like to have on the R7. @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад

      The EOS R7 has a smaller sensor. Making an RF-S lens, means Canon can produce dedicated lenses for this sensor size, which allows them to be smaller and lighter lenses. You'll notice that the back of the lens actually flares out, because the lens mount is actually the same RF mount you'd find on your EOS RP. You could use any of your existing RF lenses on the EOS R7, just take into account the 1.6x crop factor (see our video which explains this here and will allow you to decide if you need a full frame camera or if this APS-C camera will be just perfect for your needs: ruclips.net/video/_9i2YqMRPJk/видео.html)
      However, if you wanted to use an RF-S lens on your EOS RP, you'd see a circle where the smaller lens doesn't cover your larger sensor... or some cameras will deafult to crop-sensor mode, which would mean you could still use the lens, but you'd not be using the full sensor size and this would also change the view you're used to from the lens.
      You will find that the EOS R7 is much, much faster and more accurate when shooting fast moving subjects compared to your EOS RP - 3 times faster, with the improved AF will mean you'll barely ever have an out of focus shot - assuming your shutter speed and other settings are in line with whatever you're shooting.

      The aperture would remain at 5.6-6.8 which means how much light the lens will let in remains the same whether you’re using it on a full frame or a crop sensor.
      It’s only when you’re using teleconverters (with suitable lenses) that you need to consider a change in aperture as they affect how much light can enter the lens.
      As others have said, depth of field is different between full frame and crop sensors. So you’d get more bokeh from a 50mm F1.8 on a full frame camera than you would on a crop sensor. Hope this helps!
      If you check out our other videos we have one called “full frame vs crop sensor” and a Camera Basics series where we discuss aperture as well 😊

      The EOS R6 sits higher up the EOS R lineup, alongside other full-frame models and will remain a current model for the foreseeable future. Although the R6 is another great camera for sports and wildlife photographers, it's aimed a little more at keen enthusiasts as well as professionals. The EOS R7 with it's APS-C or "crop sensor" has some serious specs and capabilities, but it achieves the size, weight and price point by not including some of the pro features, but crucially features the smaller APS-C sensor - we actually loved this for wildlife as you get more reach from your lenses!
      The large resolution also allows excellent cropping in post-production as well). If you're looking for an all-round camera which will excel with fast-moving subjects and is small, light and (relatively) affordable, then the R7 is ideal for you. If you're looking for a full-frame camera for sports and wildlife along with a camera designed with more professional use in mind then the EOS R6 would be a great choice.

      We've got some images off the RF 800mm F11 at ISO 6400 and of course when you're at 100% you can see some noise in the background, but it's not bad at all and what we would class as being perfectly acceptable for a modern sensor at 6400. It certainly doesn't noticeably detract from the image and a test print came out beautifully too. Naturally, this lens is not as sharp up close as the RF 100-500mm so the bird's eye was a little bit softer... but again is as we would expect from this lens in this price range.

  • @tintin69rr

    Why does the rf 800 not allow full screen af it’s still a box area on the crop sensor yet on a R 6 in crop mode it fills the frame up to full af area I just don’t get why there’s that restriction yet put a ef400mm 5.6 with ef2xiii which is still f11 at 800mm it allows full frame eye af I don’t get why old lenses allow this yet new technology doesn’t 🙈🙈🙈😳😳😳

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад

      The reason it fills the area on a full frame sensor in crop mode is because… and the figures I’m about to quote are just examples - I don’t have the exact data to hand. But, let’s say that the R6 only uses the centre 80% of the AF points when using the RF 800mm F11 lens. When you’re in crop mode, these will appear to fill your frame, because you’re no longer looking at the outer edge of the sensor (because you’re in crop mode) and therefore what’s left appears to have AF across the full spread. Hope that helps to make sense of that?
      It also depends on the lens itself as to whether this will happen. The EF 400mm F5.6 is an older lens, but it’s an L series lens built for professionals and to professional standards. Whilst the RF 800mm and 600mm F11 lenses are much newer, they’re not L lenses and they’re not designed with the same needs in mind. After all, both EF or RF 600mm F4 L lenses are over 22x more expensive 😳

      I have the r6 and I’m tempted to trade it in for the r7 and get something like a 5ds for landscapes I was tempted to go down the r5 route and shoot in crop mode for wildlife but you can get the r7 plus a full frame body for less than the R5

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад +3

      The 33mp resolution will certainly allow you to print larger images and means you can crop more into them or any wildlife photos as you edit. If you're primarily taking landscape photographs in daylight then the APS-C sensor should be be absolutely fine for you. If you're looking to do lots of low-light or astrophotography then a full frame sensor like the EOS R6 would be a better choice for you. The EOS R5 will capture more detail as it is a full frame and high resolution sensor, but as you note... it's a lot more expensive!
      For the purposes you've mentioned the EOS R7 sounds like an ideal balance of both uses and price point. It will offer you a lighter weight system (great if you're hiking or travelling to get your landscapes!) a large resolution sensor for detailed prints or cropping in post production, super fast AF for wildlife photography with the benefit of the 1.6 crop factor to get you more reach from your lenses. But, just consider this crop factor when thinking about framing your wider landscapes as your existing lenses will give you a different view if you've previously shot on full frame.

      @@tintin69rr I have the R6, EOR R and just sold the 5DS. I used my 5DS for studio portraits where I hardly if ever cropped. The R6 is just fine at portraits and after seeing all the photos taken at my Son wedding by two professional wedding photographers using R6s I don’t know what all the fuss is about 20.1MP it’s more than enough and we have A3 prints that are as sharp as nails.
      Don’t get me wrong the 5DS at low ISO is a great camera but anything past 400ISO starts to get noise and if shooting dawn and sunset shots this can affect shadow areas. I used the 5DS on a safari once it was a mistake too much noise in low light something you have to push the R6 a long way to see.
      I use the EOS R and the R6 for landscapes and unless cropping hard cannot tell the two apart. I will be getting the R7 but not to replace either the R6 or the EOS R to get the longer reach, for the self levelling horizon, AF and the smaller lighter body.
      The R6 teamed with the RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM and the RF 70-200mm f4L IS USM are now my go to setup for portraits. The R7 teamed with the RF 16mm f2.8 will give me an affective 25.6mm field of view wide enough for most landscapes and I shall mainly use it with either the RF 24-240mm or the RF 100-400mm which will give an effective 640mm at the long end. I also have the RF 50mm f1.8 which gives an effective focal length of 75mm ideal for portraits or I still have a single EF lens the EF 85mm f1.4L IS USM which will give me 136mm on the R7 and I still use for portraits on the R6.
      Personally if you can afford it, keep the R6 and add the R7 different tools for different jobs.

    The camera is pointless if Canon doesn't release solid APS-C purpose built fast primes for standard focal lengths (28, 35, 40, 50, 85, 105, etc). I would say Sigma or other third-party lens makers could pick up the slack, but Canon has locked down RF so you're basically left buying full frame lenses that are unnecessarily oversized, heavy, and more expensive than needed for an APS-C body. Such a shame, the EF-M 22mm f/2 (~33mm) and 32mm f/1.4 (~51mm) are solid first party APS-C lenses on a platform that also has access to the three great Sigma f/1.4 APS-C primes with the 16, 30, and 56mm lenses (Canon's 1.6 crop factor puts that at 35mm equiv of 25.6, 48, and 89.6) for solid fast wide, standard, and tele primes.
    I don't want to hate the camera, to me the camera is great, I want to love it. But how can I love a camera if the manufacturer doesn't really care about APS-C at all then locks the platform so third parties can't help fill the holes like is being done with Nikon's Z mount for the Z50 and Z fc (whom also could care less about APS-C, but at least third party can fix that). Basically, you have the A6500/6600 from Sony for IBIS and APS-C, or Fuji's offering with full frame priced lens options.

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  Год назад

      Canon haven’t had chance to bring out a range of RF-S lenses yet - as with any new system release, lenses are built up over time. But also consider the APS-C series of EOS DSLR cameras…. There’s really only a very small choice of EF-S lenses… and it’s never really been an issue.
      Sigma, Tamron, etc. will have access to the mount in time, I’m confident of this. The manufacturers know that allowing 3rd party providers to license the lens is ultimately beneficial for them in terms of sales of the body, but it’s understandable that they want to push the technology and improvements in their new mirrorless lenses first.
      Thank you for watching 😊

      @@WilkinsonCameras "There’s really only a very small choice of EF-S lenses"
      You know why? Because:
      - Canon doesnt care about the lower end and APS-C users, their goal was since ever to force their customers sooner or later to full frame
      - Canons APS-C lenses are ALL TOGETHER (!!!!) weak. Some are usable (10-22 for example), but most are just absolute beginners lenses you are hardly happy with in long term.
      I still hope there will be one day a nice RF-S collection, probably the first Canon APS-C holy trinity? Anything with F1.8 or 2.8 at least? I still doubt canon will ever make any RF-S lens with F2.8 or faster, especially as long canon want to force their users to full frame by making "bad" APS-C stuff.

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад

      You shouldn't be finding those issues at all, the AF is excellent on both cameras, even in low or difficult light. As you're experiencing it on two models, this would guide us towards settings issues rather than hardware faults. Fortunately the AF has lots of features and is highly customisable. Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to issues where a couple of settings changed in error could lead to issues. Our advice - try a full reset of your cameras to ensure you remove any accidental selections and get it back to basics. Then, the advanced user guide (cam.start.canon/hy/C004/manual/c004.pdf) can help you or try this video which is very in-depth and offers explanations of what to use/when to use different AF settings for Canon cameras: ruclips.net/video/uFFKciYlxjQ/видео.html

    I strongly believe that the R7 is not a flagship apsc r camera.
    It's not a fully weather sealed body.
    It dosen't have the 3 pin remote connector
    It dosen't have gps
    It dosen't have 3 dial wheels.
    It dosen't have a full size or a mini hdmi
    It dosen't have wifi 6 support or an inbuilt wifi transmitter.
    Dosen't have a top info display screen like the R5
    It dosen't have an Ethernet port / it dosen't support the WFT battery grip even though it's the same battery.
    And it dosen't have a CF express card.
    No flash sinc port
    And it dosen't have high res view finder and a high res back screen even though Canon already dose it for the R5.
    This is a 90d successor and not a 7d mark 2 successor.
    I think canon will put it all these features in an other camera and call it a R9 and that it will come with a 2000$ price tag .

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад +1

      Most of these features can be found in th EOS R3 and it's $5999 ;) (or £5879 to our local audience).
      We think the very attractive price point needs considering. It's a third of the price of an EOS R5 and a quarter of the price of the EOS R3 (which ticks most of the boxes you seem to be looking for, so is probably the camera for you instead of the R7!)
      The EOS R7 is less expensive than the 7D Mark II was at launch, 8 years ago, with lots of massively improved features and at a time where components and material costs are at an all time high. It is weather resistant, as opposed to being "fully weather sealed" which would come at a much higher price tag. The R7 is a balance of size, weight, performance, *required* features (user habits and technology change over time), and price point and we think the balance is pretty perfect.
      Why add a 3 pin remote connector when most photographers would prefer the convenience of a wireless remote or wireless shooting via mobile?
      GPS would add size, weight and costs to the camera, when the *majority* not all don't require this feature. But, those who do can easily get around this by using the optional GPS Receiver GP-E2 or using the Canon Camera Connect app.
      There's a front and back control wheel as well as a joystick control, plus the menu wheel and the traditional Q menu button. It could potentially have more buttons for quicker settings changes, but we didn't find we needed this when using it. The camera does so much for you that it negates the need, but equally menus were fast and easy to use and settings easy to adjust and customise.
      It has HDMI Micro out which we used with our Atomos on the day. You can also use this for charging in-camera with a Power Delivery (PD) USB charger.
      Do you need WiFi 6 on this device? It does have Wi-Fi and bluetooth connectivity as standard and we found it to be as simple to use as on other Canon cameras using the Camera Connect app.
      Cameras at this level, which would have included the EOS 7D Mark II don't have ethernet as standard and again come at a *much* higher price point.
      We asked about the top display, but not having this keeps the camera smaller and lighter and lots of the information can be shown on the EVF display with no need to remove your eye or on the LCD screen.
      Using good quality UHS-II SD cards should be plenty fast enough and won't cost 25% or more of the camera. We had no issues in our tests using a decent SD card. A win for photographers who may already have these cards or can buy them for less than a Type B CFexpress. More money to put towards lenses!
      Again, comparing the EVF and LCD screen to a model 3 times the price isn't a fair comparison. We found the EVF to be very good and had no concerns over the LCD screen whilst using that either!
      No need to worry about flash sync port, you can simply use a wireless flash trigger!
      It is currently Canon's flagship APS-C EOS R camera as it's currently the best one of the 2. If down the line a more pro-level option comes out, that will then be the "flagship" model.
      From the sounds of it, you may be better off looking at the EOS R3 as it's going to tick almost all of your boxes - good luck with your search for a camera.

When Canon launched the 90D they effectively killed the 7D MKII and with the R7 they have pitched the specification between a pro level 7D MKII and the enthusiast 90D thus combining the two cameras in one.
      Cameras like the R5 allow for hard cropping and that’s why they have become popular with wildlife and bird photographers so part of that crop sensor market has migrated to full frame. They will likely buy the R7 as a second body whilst enthusiasts will just get the R7.
      The biggest issue currently is not the cameras but the low end RF-S lenses they just released with plastic mounts and no weather sealing. They need a wide-angle pro grade RF-S lens with weather sealing other than that MOST reviewers are very positive about the R7 that have actually used it.

    If we use Adapter to this camera to attach EF lenses, will that affect the image quality? Would you using EF lens with adaptor over R lenses

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  2 года назад +1

      The adapter won’t reduce the image quality from your EF lenses, but there are several advantages to RF lenses over EF. If you were looking to buy the best quality lens for your EOS R system camera then you’d be best to get an RF lens. But if you already own L series EF lenses, for example, then you may as well use these with the adapter until you’re ready to invest in RF lenses.

    I shoot outdoor sports with a 7Dii and 100-400ii. This R7 would be a game changer for me. The 7Dii af is now my limiting factor. At the speed I work at the af just can't keep up and the hit rate is too low. Unfortunately I can't justify the upgrade, especially as I need a vertical grip. At least I wouldn't need to change my glass too....

      You may find that with the decreased weight of the EOS R7 that you don't find yourself needing a vertical grip for handling - certainly worth getting one in your hands when stock allows and seeing what you think. But yes, great news that you'll be able to use your EF lenses, but also worth considering the RF lenses down the line too as these are also a lot smaller and lighter. Hi Michael, there's no battery grip planned for this model from Canon (at the time of our reply anyway!) It's surprisingly light, even with an RF 100-500mm lens. I shot most of the day with this combo, a lot of the time in portrait, and it was fine for me. But I know that some people like grips and may be disappointed by this news. Canon haven't provided detailed weatherproofing information - just that it has some and on a similar level to the EOS 90D. The operating environment is shown as being 0 -40 °C and 85% or less humidity. The RF-S lenses aren't weather sealed, but sounds like you'd not be using these anyway. Not at all! You’ll notice that we used a variety of lenses which will be typical of the people who will be interested in this camera. Shots included in the video (and marked up accordingly) are taken on the RF 100-400mm, RF 600mm, and RF 800mm which are all less than £1100 and make great telephoto options for a lower budget. We also used the RF 100-500mm L and RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro lenses as these are the RF equivalents to the EF 100-400mm and EF 100mm F2.8L Macro and many existing Canon 7D users will already have these lenses and will be considering the RF ones.
      The beauty of the R7 is that it’s relatively affordable, particularly when compared to full frame cameras, which should mean people can invest in some really tasty lenses which they can use for many years to come 😊

    Oh boy, thats a pretty much paid review. Some corrections here:
    1) The "new" RF-S lenses are completely reused designs from the already "bad" EF-M models. Nothing new except the mount on these lenses (and a higher price, FOR WHAT?!)
    2) No word about the flaws in video: 4k fine very very bad rolling shutter (worst in its class for sure!), 4k60 no crop utterly garbage only 4k60 CROP (!!!) is usable sharp. 1080p120 is really nice, but Canon.... GIVE US 240 FPS OPTION (or is the sensor too slow?!)
    3) rolling shutter and shutter shock issues.... electronic is more or less a No-Go to use at anything faster than a slug, EFCS and mechanical in 15 fps are not usable below 1/1000 on most lenses/configurations.
    4)... "new" Sensor... so you change the filter array and you (Canon...) think now you can advertise it as a NEW (!!!) sensor?! And as many reviewers repeated this lie as well... lets be honest, the sensor on the R7 is SUPER SLOW and rolling shutter, in video or photo, proves it well.
    I really like the R7, there is a workaround for nearly all issues the camera got, but its so sad to barely see people talking about these shortcomings which are super annoying especially when you just find them out after the purchase and didnt know anything about it since the (paid?!) reviewerd hid some/all negative facts.

      We’re not paid to do reviews 😊
      But we will focus on what cameras *do* and the features they have more than pick out all the negatives and things they *don’t* do. People tend to buy based on what the item does for them and their needs, as opposed to what it doesn’t do.
      We will be getting the R7 back at some point at which point we can do an in depth review in multiple settings.

      Its not that bad. I had the RF 800 on the EOS RP, R6 and R7 already.
      I even nailed a bunny in the field in literally darkness... 1/10 SS, ISO 32.000 and stabilized via the (idling!) cars open window. Ofc there were only about 5% of the shots usable sharp and NONE anywhere usable because of a very bad noise floor, but even a little more light would have changed a lot since it was more or less dark already and you just dont shoot with 1280mm at 1/10 shutter speed.
      Sure, the RF 800 F11 performs the best on R6 (and R5), but if the crazy super tele range isnt hindering you more than you can make use of (1280mm is cancerous long for most wildlife situations...) its definately the cheapest but still nice entry in the supertele range without sacrificing too much on AF performance and that in "small" and light.
      What i like the RF 800 the most for... its stabilizer with the R7s IBIS make it a GREAT WILDLIFE/VIDEO LENS, but i have to admit - i hate it pretty much for photography since i have F5.6 and F6.3 tele(zoom!) lenses.

      1) 15 fps mech. are at best anything like 12-13 fps if there is no refocussing done, only EFCS allows theoretically for 15 fps.
      2) WLAN ON limite the max fps automatically to 12 fps in EFCS/mech
      3) 15 fps mech/EFCS suffers heavily from shutter shock at most lenses, including RF-S 18-150.
      4) R7s user manual say "above 1/1000 for 15 fps mech/EFCS".... well with some lenses, including a canon RF lens (RF 800 F11) still suffer from shutter shock at 1/1600 sometimes, at 1/2000 im mostly free from these issues.
      5) as much canon love to advertise their 15 fps mechanical... be aware if you use anything between 1/100 and 1/1250 you will often go for the 8fps drive mode to avoid shutter shock or just electronic with all its downsides (especially on the R7 with its slow sensor)
