Thank you very much for uploading video's like this (and this one in particular since it's one of my favorite melodies!). They help me (a self taught piano enthousiast) to make progress and pick new pieces to (try) to play! I just recorded my own version. It's my way to keep motivated and 'round up' a piece so I can move on to the following. Thanks for taking the time to make these and for the inspiration.

Schubert was a Lied genius. He captured the innermost essence of every poem and gave it form, no unnecessary artistry, no show-off virtuoso stuff, just the heart of music, nothing more, nothing less.

I heard a violin arrangement when I was 8. Didn't have the means to seek it out. Couldn't if I tried. But I held this melody in my heart for maybe more than 15 years
The day I rediscovered what I'd held so close? I've never felt more blessed.
I feel that moment again everytime I hear this peice. Thanks for the post. It really was great

Hello Paul, I really enjoyed your playing on this Lied by Schubert.
As one of many people who love to hear you play I though I could suggest a idea for a video: a video where you tell us a bit about your background, or your story, in music. When did you start to learn the piano, how did that happen, who were your teachers and how were your classes for example. I think it would be very amusing for us to learn I little more about you and your path in music.
    Thank you

After all, he WAS the greatest song writer ever. Listen to his symphonies, piano sonatas, chamber music, not to mention incidental music (Rosamunde), etc, etc. etc! THIS IS YOUR FAVOURITE??

J Deda That’s not how this works at all. Sure, if you play RH louder, the left will sound not as loud, but LH being F and RH being FFF is not the same as LH playing PPP and RH playing P.
Left hand playing PPP/sotto voce is acquired by first barely even touching the notes. Press the notes so softly that they make no noise (Like ghosts notes/ghost playing). This should be done at a controlled and slow tempo.
Slowly speed it up and the left hand would then start being heard because a faster tempo usually makes you play a little louder. If your hand doesn’t make things louder as you speed it up, ghost play but start adding a little more pressure. Keep pressing slightly harder until it makes a noise.
Then, move on to the next note(s) and try to play as soft as possible while still trying to make a noise. If the noise is super quiet, great! If the note didn’t play, apply more pressure until it does (you’ll eventually get used to applying the right amount of pressure to barely make a sound). If the note played too loud, go back to purposefully playing ghost notes.
You don’t need to be super advanced to apply this routine to get soft notes. An intermediate player has enough experience and control to do this.

Hi! I just wanted to say thank you to Mr. Paul Barton, with such an amazing performances that you post everyday in your channel.
And, only a minor inconvenience, don't you think that the G3, on your piano, sounds very out of tune?

Thank you. Practice motivation for chronicly lazy. I wire $300 to my sister. After an hours practice i text her to say i did it and she wires me $18 and she keeps $2. Im stingy so having to pay my annoying sister $2 will piss me off so much that after the 15 time ive done this i will do the practice with out needing the incentive. Hell maybe she pays me 15 and keeps 5 so even greater sting lol.

Most enjoyable. Loved watching your hands. The movements were so expressive and just makes me imagine how expressive the rest of your body must have been. Great touch and loved the piece. Thanks for playing it.

very lovely. I did try (for quite a while) to get this sheet music, but it appears it requires either a membership or out right purchase of the entire piece, which is confusing as it says it is in public domain.

Formidable, marvellous. But what's the name of the piano, please ! Je ne crois pas que ce soit un acoustique, il me semble, d'après ce que je vois à gauche du clavier, que c'est un numérique. Et le son fait illusion !

I play this song as I walk to work in the snow before the late dusk. I admit it’s totally melodramatic, but it gives me one of my favorite feelings
