Regarding the colour / white balance differences, I’m still fairly new at this colour correction / grading world, so this is most likely human error 😂 - as of writing this, the 2nd camera has not been updated to the latest firmware as of yet. When I update it, I’ll update this pinned comment with my findings. Thanks so much for the compliments on the video so far! - Shaun (TechMixr)
just importand to know - there is no pdaf if you shoot at 1080P 50P - if thats the case so the test isnt good - try to shoot 1080 20P / 6K 25P and test the AF - the af is much better
I was thinking about this the other day. Oh it drives me crazy 😂 Just hold a handheld mic if you don’t want to wear a lav 😂 Sidenote- stupid me had it upside down when I was at the computer 😂😂😂 (I guess this is an Easter egg for the video now) 🤦🏾♂️
I'm almost convinced that this camera is in my near future. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into this examination of the new firmware. 👍👋
This made me smile. Thank you so much for the compliment- I’m glad it’s serving everyone - I had a lot of questions too about human detect autofocus. 🙏🏾
That’s a great idea. The only zoom lens I have currently are the Sigma 14-24 and the 20-60 kit lens unfortunately. The other 2 lens are wide angle prime lenses.
Nothing says committing to testing like cars driving past you giving you looks, while you pace around a parking lot with a stone cold look on your face 😂 Appreciate the compliment my dude! 🙏🏾
As a photographer I'm actually impressed with the face eye for photography only, it's finally able to lock on to a individual when in a crowd. It's almost on par with my old A7r3 and a7s3
Hilariously, I’ve never done photography with this camera. I’m one of “those” people 😂 Very interesting! I’ll probably explore the photography side of the S5II one day. For the price point and the continued firmware updates, buying 2 of these was a great decision. Sure the AF isn’t perfect, but it’s leaps and bounds over their former DFD contrast system from the past. Thanks for the insight!
Thanks for the compliment! 🙏🏾 There might be some AF tweaks I might have to do with the Sigma lenses. It’s not as bad as the contrast DFD system from years past, but I found the native glass to be a bit better. I guess I’m going to make even more use of those custom modes 😂
Good and helpful video. I use the Sigma 24-70 art lens and tbh I didn't really see a lot of improvements in the autofocus. And I was always a bit unsatisfied with the af performance in low light but I will make sure to use eye + body detection from now on. Thanks a lot
Hahahaha I thought the same thing. What I like about it is that if you’re in a challenging lighting condition, it doesn’t pulse terribly like it would previously. All that being said, it’s an improvement from the older firmware. How useful it is, that’s a different discussion 😂 Thanks for the compliment 🙏🏾
Great video - did you ever test AF after 12,800 ISO? I'm not sure if other cameras do this, but it's phase detect until 12,800 then any higher and it swaps to contrast detect which is basically useless in low light. I'm surprised that I couldn't find that info anywhere in the manual either. I suppose it's rare for someone to do video at that ISO but I'm sure it happens in some situations, especially run and gun style stuff or certain concerts.
Usually, but in a lot of cases from using these cameras since launch, it did a decent job on the kit lens with detection on and focus in 1-area set to the centre. I’ve tried to lock on and it was so inconsistent that I’ve found it better to do it this way. But I’m open to retrying with the new firmware.
Thank you very much for the reviews and the comparisons. Question for you: At the 4:01 mark where you are doing side-by-side comparisons, do you remember if you had the same white balance and color profile on both cameras? I ask because it seems the color / white balance is different, and I am just wondering whether the firmware caused the white blance differences, or if one of the 20-60 lenses is more green, or whether (like me) you just had an ooppssie with the white balance on one of the cameras? I only bring this up because a lot of times people are so wrapped up about a camera's "color science" and they don't realize all the factors that might affect the colors in any particular shot.
So I did have the exact same settings and I white balanced the same way with a grey card but between takes and redoing stuff I wonder if I should have re-white balanced on every take due to the sun changing position even slightly (it was a clear day, but you never know.) I’m also very new at colour grading so I’m betting this is all human error 😂. To be honest - a few of those clips were super long because either someone would walk in the shot or a car would fly past me 😂🤦🏾♂️ I still have to update the 2nd camera. I know they shot identically previously on the old firmware. I’ll update this comment (and the few others asking) with those results. Thanks so much for the compliment.
I mostly use one area without human tracking and I often get very good results. This is really not because of the IBIS and the AF that I almost never use my S5II, both are great.
Thank you for puting so much work to test autofocus. I set my af settings to +3 on both and every time is in focus in oposite what you have in video, but I use different lenses (lumix primes) and didnt zoom image, so that why i may not see this. Aparat from AF, colors on both firmware are much different. You using auto white balance in this test? Or maybe firmware update change something in image?
Lots to unpack here. When I went up to +3 it was a disaster so I backed it off to default settings and in my case, it got better. But others with the S5 II have done what you did, and got way better results than I did. Maybe I’m still too new with cameras for this 😂🤦🏾♂️ In terms of colour differences, this MIGHT be human error. I never use auto white balance (I white balanced with a grey card for every test / lens change / filter addition) - however, I’m still learning how to correct / grade V-LOG - and only fairly recently got decent at it. Due to the rush of trying to get this video up in a timely fashion, I could have matched things a lot better. But now, I’m curious…… I haven’t updated the 2nd camera as of yet, but am wondering if there is a major colour difference between firmware versions. Thanks for the compliment and insight. This rabbit hole has infinite pathways to explore now 😂🙏🏾
I would try a factory reset after backing up your settings. My 18mm 1.8 and even the 20-60mm kit lens work fine at 0 - rarely misses. But to be honest, I tend turn off eye autofocus in most cases to play it completely safe (especially if I'm filming myself out and about and can't monitor myself). I just use body detect (especially after the almost no light test in this video) - it's been great.
@@TechMixr it’s not that it misses but it if you lean forward or back it’s slightly delayed in locking on eye. I’ve had 2 versions that do this. It’s brand new so no need to factory rest. You notice less on wide angles. More on 50mm and 85mm etc but even in my native 35 1.8 I see it, if you are head and shoulders it’s not as noticeable but if it’s a CU on a face it’s there.
Interesting. I have mainly wide angle lenses but am looking at the Lumix 24mm & 50mm 1.8 lenses. If I get my hand on those I’m going to check into this as well.
@@TechMixr brilliant thanks, I’m sure it’s something that Lumix can fix. I’ve had 3 different Lumix s5iiX’s and see it on all. Btw I’m commenting from my non RUclips channel 😇 although I’ve done a review on the first S5iiX I had I’ll drop an additional comment.

It is better in some scenarios but sometimes I think 2.4 was better. Low light performance is drastically better mind you. But some shots in better light I find it misses a little- not incredibly bad but sometimes noticeable.
Parking shot focusing would have been better on both firmwares if the lighting angle would have been different. A few more degrees and your face would have been lighted better. I have both A7iv and S5ii and I’d say the S5ii firmware 3.0 makes the camera just as usable now. Tap to focus is still useless though and I use that a lot.
Fair point. I’m still content with the test. Not all scenarios will be ideal and I’ve tried a similar shot on a friend’s Sony camera months ago and it didn’t have as many issues with it w/ different lens / filter combos.
