Good news, this problem has already been solved in the lumix s9, which has the same sensor as the s5ii, so all we have to do is wait for Panasonic to release the next update, definitely with 60p without any crop this is the most complete camera on the entire market
Good video, and good effort. Panasonic has a way to go before catching up to Sony. The A9III has scary good AF. On the plus side, the image stabilization is looking really good with the new firmware update. Especially nice to see Panasonic address the warping that occurs in the corners. That said, I think the IBIS is easier to fix. I do wish other camera manufacturers would address this issue. Keep it up.
Thank you 🙏😊 Yeh I agree, I don’t get why Panasonic can do it so well but the big boys just can’t seem to get it right. Canon especially! Glad to hear the IBIS is better though 😊
This is such a bad way to test the AF. 😅😅😅. Would recommend to go watch Josh Cameron video best AF sittings. He talks about what AF sitting should be used for each situation. Also Lumix did say the best Af is eye and human body sitting. Eye tracking works best for interviews or when the person still. Eye and body detection works best for someone moving about as in walking or ruining. One area works best for when there is lots of people around but you just want that one person to be in focus. Also the lens on the camera plays apart. Dont watch this video and think oh the updates didn't work
I think I know we can agree that this wasn’t meant to be a comprehensive review of the autofocus 😂 And I never said the update didn’t work. LUMIX never said they updated this particular aspect of the AF. I was just hoping they snuck it in there trying to brush it under the carpet. But they didn’t. So my video was meant to display how I failed to expose this. So yeh I agree, don’t watch this expecting a detailed review. Just watch it to have a laugh really. 😊
@@TheCreatorsBlock have to understand that your viewers will take what you say seriously. I get what your going for as the camera conspiracy channel does the same thing. It’s not a review of the autofocus capabilities. Just me hoping one aspect of the autofocus might have been secretly updated in the hope this would bring potentially good news to the rest. But I failed. And was very honest to the fact that I failed. That’s what the video is about. Changing the modes won’t change the fact that 1080p 50fps is still CDAF. @@rexhiii does it. I'll head to your channel to watch the video you have made of the showcasing a side by side of the S5iix and the Sony to see witch one has the better AF. Assuming you have used the S5iix so can diff say the Sony has better AF
Did it get worse? I just got the S5iix so I didn't experience the old firmware. Anyway, coming from the og S5, I'm not sure if they used contrast detect on the 1080p on the s5ii/x, or atleast not the same one because the original S5, it really hunts so the AF stutters. Here, even if it's slow, it's ok, it doesn't hunt--which is the worst part of a bad autofocus system imo.
Ha! That sounds tempting but I think I’ll be sticking with LUMIX regardless. I have faith that they will introduce the first mirrorless with built in ND’s! 😂 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 😊
This is my biggest gripe with the S5ii. I might as well didn't upgrade one of my S5 to it had I known it would be an issue for me that the PDAF only works in Fullframe 24/25fps and anything above 30 is cropped. And I think that saddest thing is that it's not even better than my old Sony A6300.
Interesting video, thanks for doing this. Not a criticism just a thought I had while watching. I don’t see the jittery background that contrast based usually results in, this was always an issue I had with the older bodies. The PD may just be poorly tuned still. By chance did the update change your focus settings to be reset to default? Hopefully it gets resolved soon in way or another.
Thank you! Yeh it does seem to focus a bit smoother. To be honest it may have altered my settings because I don’t know if you noticed but after the firmware it went back to AWB and Auto ISO which was a bit of an error. I was getting too excited by the prospect of phase detect clearly 🤣
I'm thinking about buying s5 mk2, i watched your video and i know about bad af in 50fp, but what if i want record only in 1080p, i mean 25 or 50 fps i also have to use crop mode? Or crop mode is only if i use 120 fps ?
Yeh so in 4k 50fps it has a crop but the Phase Detect AF works well. In 1080p 50fps there is no crop, so it’s full frame but it reverts back to Contrast Detect AF which is pretty unreliable. It’s all about compromises with this camera. I tend to use 4k 50fps with the apsc crop nowadays just for better AF performance but I use 4k 25fps for most scenarios. I hope this helps!
i don't own the camera but for me the old firmware autofocus seems really organic for the video almost like you got a focus puller doing it for you, i personally dont like when the camera focus on the background and then focus jumps on face in 0.2 seconds it looks really crap and edgy/digital, but for photography its a plus.
Yeh I agree regarding preferred look, but you can adjust the focus speed and sensitivity to suit your needs. It’s much more reliable which is the main thing. DFD AF is just really bad and very unreliable. It may give a nice look in terms of focus pull at times but that’s just because it doesn’t know what it’s doing 🤣 You don’t always get that look. It pulses a LOT with DFD.
I had a GH4 and used it on manual focus all the time and that was fine at the time for what I needed but when I needed auto focus Panasonic is just unreliable. I have an FX30 now and now never about missing focus it nails it every time.
I just updated the firmware on my s5iix and since autofocus is very, very slow compared to how it was before, I don't know if it should be configured differently, or if the lens firmware needs to be updated
It may have reset some of your settings perhaps? It did that for me. You may have noticed WB and Exposure shifting after I installed the firmware because it defaulted back to auto for these annoyingly.
I will probably do more tests to see which settings work best. But for this video I was simply just wanting to see quick results to confirm whether it had been updated. The settings were the same both for 25fps and 50fps and you can see the difference in how they both performed. But I still need to do more tests to find the best settings because I don’t have this camera nailed down yet.
Why the heck were you still on 1.0 ? There's been a ton of updates between 1.0 and 2.0, that added extra features and improvements ? 1.3 already added more features to AF.
You have it there if you want to use it, a lot of cameras still have 1080p. What I don't see is the point of the autofocus in 1080p 50 fps when you have in 4k with Phase detect autofocus...
I don't get it... It seems like it works fine to me. Did you just want it to be faster? Did you change all of the settings for that? Am I the only one that thinks it worked fine? lol
Yeh so in 25fps 1080p the new Phase Detect autofocus works and it works well. You can see how it just seamlessly locks on to me. Whereas 1080p 50fps has the old Contrast Detect autofocus, which works, but it hints around more and takes a while to latch on. So I was hoping they added the new phase detect in 50fps 1080p in this new firmware. But they haven’t, it focuses just the same as before. I mean don’t get me wrong, my tests weren’t the best! 🤣 But you can just tell it hasn’t been improved.
No in 4k 50fps it goes into apsc and still has PDAF. But for some obscure reason 1080p 50fps reverts back to Contrast Detect. I was hoping they just secretly updated this without saying because no one ever mentioned that in 1080p 50fps it doesn’t have phase detect.
@@TheCreatorsBlock Wow. That is a pisser, I believe. Because I have a S5ii on the way. My S5 is a good camera. I do the tap and set to focus thing and it works. 1. Not the correct way of testing it, since there are at least three separate settings that can be changed 2. IT WAS ALWAYS PDAF IN 1080p 50fps. Contrast detect autofocus flickers 3. To properly test autofocus, you will have to use the higher transition speeds, since they are the most indicative of the stickiness of AF, and its ability to follow the subject, or detect it.
Ha! This isn’t a video to highlight the AF capabilities of this camera. For someone who uses 1080p 50fps 50% of the time and 1080p 25fps the other 50% of the time I can categorically say the AF does not perform equally. 50fps 1080p performs almost as bad and in the same manor as the S1 I used to own. It is Contrast Based AF. This video was me just playing around to QUICKLY test if 50fps AF had made an improvement to see if they’d snuck the update in. But it is massively obvious even in my extremely limited testing that they haven’t. I didn’t need to go any further with it. There’s no amount of setting changes that will alter the fact it’s contrast based AF in 50fps 1080p. It’s just too obviously bad.
