      I’m from the uk and I’ve had pretty good luck with mechanics being honest, except once when I was told I needed all my brake discs replacing and they brought out this pair of brake discs that looked awful... I later thought to myself, I wonder if they keep those discs just to show to people to justify the work!

    At 5:16. The Struts on these are cartridges from what I remember. The actual shock absorber is inside the strut held by a pin at the base. If you knock out the pin the strut cartridge comes out saving quite a bit of money.

      @MH-ev3wr 3 года назад +6

      You beat me to it! $2k my ass. The inserts come out and can be individually replaced. It always frustrates me when people complain that these cars are "so expensive to maintain". Nope, they're not - just do the work yourself, read up on the forums, ask a lot of questions, and you're golden. Air cooled 911s are some of the easiest cars to work on.

    • @nigspeed
      @nigspeed 3 года назад +1

      @@MH-ev3wr totally agree . And if it's a major service, which it seems to be , just drop the engine and box , do the breather seals at the top , change all oil hoses , then send the CIS unit away for rebuild. The valve cover seals look like they are weeping, posible head studs need checking while you are there , cos looks like you may have a few that have snapped.

    • @MH-ev3wr
      @MH-ev3wr 3 года назад +3

      @@nigspeed Totally! The triangle of death is a major source of leaks. Engine drop on this car is a no-brainer. No mention made of new plugs, cap, rotor, and valve adjustment, either. As you said, check head studs while doing valve adjust. Can’t remember if turbos in ‘86 used dilvar studs or not.

    I don't care what anyone else says, Porsche does two things REALLY, REALLY well - manual transmissions and fender arches (they're not tacked on afterthoughts here but beautifully integrated into the body). I agree with the Wizard. You get what you pay for. Do you really want to take a chance with somebody who will "do your car cheaper" only to have to pay AGAIN to have it done right when the car breaks again, it's still apart weeks later, etc.? These aren't your run-of-the-mill cars. These cars are literally rolling works of art. There's something called CRAFTSMANSHIP that lost on thousand-a-minute cars that are stamped out like tin cans. They don't make them like this anymore. Thank you for sharing this amazing car with us, Car Wizard.

    The 930 turbo became know as the "widow maker" because the car loved to spin out of control especially around corners, when the turbo kicked in, and all the weight in the rear wanted to be at the front. Great video as usual, but I am going to be "that guy" and point out that a 930 turbo is a 911 in every respect. The 930 designation indicates a specific variant of 911.

    • @16v15
      @16v15 3 года назад +6

      It was generally a '911 Turbo'. The 930 moniker was an internal designation that they used on they first wave they sold back in the day. They dropped it (930) when they came back in 1986. For the minutiae, consult Bruce Anderson's tome...

      Yeah, it's like saying "what you find on this sweet S197, you won't find on a Mustang". A 930 is a second-gen 911, made from 1975 to 1989. Preceded by the 911 body code, succeeded by the 964.
      That being said, they continued to build the 911 body code the whole time the 930 was in production.

    • @johnrodgers6049

      I bought one brand new and have still have the dealer order and factory (U.S.) brochure. The 930 was indeed listed separately as well as a 911 Turbo. The 911 Turbo is the car in this video. The 930 S is similar but with the factory slant nose kit (which I did not order). From the factory U.S. brochure: "The 930 S the slant nose Porsche street version of the 935 race car". Remember back then aftermarket body shops were making big $$ doing these slant nose conversions and eventually the factory decided to get in the action and offered a 930 S.

    My word, my dream car. Useable but awesome. Good maintenance on that she's lasting forever. Not cheap to keep but proper work keeps this thing as the factory intended. The factory knows best with something like this, wizards shop is the same as factory.

    It's still a 911. 930 is just an internal Porsche number for the turbo of this generation. Just like 964, 993 and the 951 (944 turbo) etc.

    I highly recommend to ditch the AC system altogether. It would not only save money to the owner but also make the car lighter by about 70lbs and even add some hp (no compressor to spin). I did that in my '84 Targa and it worked out great.
    As for the struts, 930 has the same type of suspension as a regular 911 so you can definitely pull out the shock insets. I just did that with my car. Mine had green Bilsteins as well, there is a small pin at the bottom of the assembly that needs to be punched out and then the insert can be released. You can see that pin in the new assembly on the car already. Bilstein B6 inserts were about $200 each and use the same original strut assembly which beats the hell out of paying $1000 to replace the entire thing.

    a friend decided to restore his old 911. a year or so later we had lunch with his wife and i asked her how the restoration was going. She said: "don't ask" and then said "don't ask how much he spent". fortunately for them, they have a lot of money.

    Hi Car Wizard!!! I just wanted to say that I think your wife is a great woman and a great video editor.
    I want to tell you that I prefer that you do the whole video when talking about the cars in your video.
    You have a very unique quality that nobody has. You are extremely relaxing to watch and listen to. I can not think of a single person that has the quality you have.

    Ordered mine on October 14, 1986 and was delivered a couple of months later. Purchased from the dealer in Fairfield, CT: Grand Prix white with burgundy leather sport seats, sunroof, limited slip and a sunroof. Looking at my purchase order now and see that was $61,468 plus tax/license reg fees. Quite a bit of $$ 35 years ago (!). People have no idea how small these 911 Turbos are compared to the bloated recent 911 variations. Placed side by side a stock air-cooled Turbo looks small and the non-Turbo narrow bodies look absolutely tiny. I guess the 911 had moved considerably up stream not only in power but also size. A Cayman GTS 4.0 might be the smart move now ;-)

    In Hoovie's latest video, he dropped a car off to the Wizard for service and two cars that were ready for him to drive home. He started out in the Cadillac with it's newly fixed A/C system. The refrigerant appeared to have leaked out and he had to turn around and take the car back. He then left in car number two in which the blower fan was broken. Hoovie seems to return more than a few cars to the Wizard that were 'fixed'. I like the Wizard and his crew well enough, but am not sure about the longevity of the repairs they perform, at least as far as Hoovie's fleet is concerned. In any case, the Wizard's shop is doing a booming business.

    Drove a 930 once, the turbo lag hits a second if two after you rev it which means if your in a curve you better know what you are doing. No traction control. Love the fact that this car looks like it's been driven and enjoyed.
