As Ken tugged and slashed at the entrails of the moose, the odors from the offal of the animal permeated the air. It didn’t help that the stand of trees the moose collapsed within provided a very limited field of view.
Usually, when a hunter is dressing a game animal in bear country, his hunting partner should position himself at an elevated position with as clear a view as possible. I could find no source that indicated where Jon was in relation to Ken and the moose carcass, but the events that unfolded next would have been very difficult to anticipate.
With all of Ken’s attention on the moose carcass, Jon saw a huge grizzly bear bolt from the nearby scrub pines. It only had to cover a few yards to reach Ken having so stealthily crept upon him. Jon was powerless to react as the bear ran up to Ken. With a single swipe of its massive paw, it sent Ken flying. Before Novotny could hit the ground the grizzly spun on its heels, as if it was surprised to see people instead of other bears.
The grizzly had disappeared into the brush by the time Jon could make his way to Novotny. The width of the grizzly's paws imparted crushing force over the length of Ken’s skull. He had no chance at survival and died instantly from the bear's only paw swipe.
Jon was not hurt by the bear and now had to find a way to contact authorities so they could reclaim Ken’s corpse. It isn’t clear whether he used a cell phone or a satellite phone, but somehow he reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police about 9:30 PM, that night.
The mounties rounded up the coroner and wildlife officials but were prevented from accessing the location due to inclement weather. The following morning, Thursday, September 15th, the investigation into the fatal grizzly mauling of Ken Novotny was initiated.
One of the first steps investigators do on fatal bear attacks is to exclude foul play. Ken’s injuries were clearly done by a bear. Foul play was ruled out, and now they knew they had a mankiller on their hands.
As Ken’s attack site was analyzed and his corpse removed, a search for the grizzly was undertaken. Hunting a grizzly bear is a little like looking for a needle in a needle stack. It is risky, especially when you know the grizzly you are hunting has already killed a man.
By Saturday, September 17th the canvassing turned up an ill-tempered grizzly the investigators considered to be the likely aggressor in Ken’s death. They shot the grizzly and DNA from its carcass was compared to evidence from Ken’s attack site. They killed the grizzly that had taken Ken’s life and removed the potential for it to kill or injure anyone else.
The Northwest Territories are home to an estimated population of 4,000 to 5,000 grizzly bears with most of those living in the Mackenzie and Richardson Mountains. Four people have been killed in bear attacks there since 1998.
After reviewing the facts surrounding this episode, I have a few questions for you. Do you think this grizzly was a dinner bell bear, or did it follow its nose to Ken’s location? Was the bear surprised when it found people at the moose carcass or did it know the hunters were there? Why did the bear flee after the fatal swipe on Novotny? How could Jon have been better prepared for a grizzly to appear so suddenly? I will gladly read and reply to your thoughts, so post them in the comments section below, and let’s talk about it!

Thanks! A bear's swipe can have the force of 7,000-25,000 pounds, which is more than five times stronger than a professional boxer. A Kodiak grizzly bear can hit with a swipe of up to 1,900 psi, which is more than 10 times more powerful than the force that can kill a human. A bear's swipe is like being hit by a baseball bat that weighs over 200 pounds.

NW Territory grizzlies may behave differently but here in the Flathead Valley of NW Montana, grizzlies will avoid people if they can and people can avoid grizzlies by staying away from the bears’ preferred places during each season. Given their phenomenal sense of smell, I believe the bear was irresistibly drawn to the blood scent of the downed moose. Furthermore, I believe he was surprised to find people nearby, which explains why he bolted back into the forest. Fall hunts for big ungulates in grizzly country is a risky “roll of the dice.” Ken crapped out, on his last roll.

Dang, idk what could've been done differently in such a sudden and close attack. Idk if his hunting partner even had time to process what was going on and get a shot off at the bear if it was only a few yards away.
If his partner who lived continues hunting, I suspect he will be a lot more on guard for a bear going forward.
I think the bear smelled it for sure, idk if it was a dinner bell bear since it seemed surprised to see humans there, and then left without fighting for the moose.
The northwest territories are large and not heavily populated. I don't think the hunter who shot the moose realized how wild and untamed it truly is up there. Or like so many others, just didn't think something bad would happen to him.
Bears are a wild card. You might get lucky 99% of the time, but then again you might be one of the unlucky ones who's number is up.
I'm sorry for his family and friends, but at least it was fast and he didn't get eaten alive, and die slowly and painfully.
And yes, Moose are enormous animals, if you haven't seen one up close, it's hard to appreciate just how huge they really are. 😳 A pissed off moose is also a dangerous animal indeed.
Great story, but with a sad ending for both the man and the bear, who likely never had a problem with humans before, living in such a remote area.

I totally agree, but if I remember correctly, there was thick brush which concealed the bear until it was very close. We all can pick their actions apart and find the flaws from a place of time & safety. But I honestly can't say for sure what i would do because I would be very surprised if I didn't hear the bear approach, and even if I did, I'd probably be very startled, not to mention terrified by having a bear so close. 😳
I want to believe I would react fast and shoot true but I just don't know because it's never happened to me.
I worked for decades as an RN and honestly, I can say it's 2nd nature for me to jump in when someone is sick, bleeding or injured.
But it's not 2nd nature to anticipate a bear attack, I mean how do you practice for that, except be the best shooter you can be and hope you react fast enough. And I don't get to target practice as much as I would like to.
I also think it's easy to get complacent when you spend years in the wild, and nothing ever happened. You don't forget, but it's not easy to be on guard every moment when you're in the woods. No one has their rifle to their eye, ready to shoot, every second. It's just not logical or reasonable to be in that state of heightened awareness, every moment.
I hope that makes sense, I do think they should have had a 3rd person, 2 ppl to deal with field dressing an animal as large as a moose, and 1 person who is completely focused on watching for predators.
When many hunters go for big brown bears like on Kodiak, they often have 3 people there, all armed with powerful rifles just in case. But it's not always possible.
Just my honest thoughts, not trying to disagree in any way with the valid points you both made. 👍
I don't think anyone goes into the woods, expecting to be attacked by a bear, unless they are hunting them.
When you think of the millions and millions of ppl just in North America who spent time in the woods and never have any issues, it's not hard to see how these things happen, and the people seem to be caught off guard.
My grandfather, father and both brothers were/are all avid deer, turkey and some small game hunters in PA's woods (and other states), and none of them ever had an issue with any of the many thousands of black bears in our woods. We grew up exploring the woods and never had issues. Of course it CAN and does happen, and we all know it, but when it never has, it's easy to not think about.
I honestly worry more about 2 legged predators than 4 legged ones. And I still live across the back road from the woods.
Just a few weeks ago my grown son was outside at dusk and he heard a large animal crashing through the woods across the back road from us, as it was getting dark.
I've told him he should join the gun club with me so at least he is familiar with my weapons. He never seemed very interested until that night. He got his butt right into the house, I think he believes me now that it's a solid plan. 😂👍

If bears killing people was extremely rare this channel and other channels like this wouldn't exist. When you enter bear county you are just as likely to end up their prey as the animals that they naturally prey on. It just depends how hungry they are and how unlucky you are and that's ALL that it is. Most bears are afraid of people but most is very far from being all.

@@joshuahull9982 I live in East Region of Alaska. Having animal troubles is like you have your neighbors dogs being annoying. I make my living flying hunters and fisherman from Anchorage into whatever place they want to be.. So YES I love a channel like this to have hunters come, but do NOT come until your really ready to be here. Putting on boots and grabbing the shotgun, no matter day or time of the year SHOULD be as normal here LIKE people who live in mainstates grab your shoes and/or maybe be even barefooot before you go outside..
So I WANT it know just HOW dangerous bears are. Let the truth be know.
      # 1 Polar Bears are to be SHOT ON SIGHT, if you see one because as soon as they see you they coming right at you to kill you. NO Question.
      # 2 Browns , aka Grizzley, aka Kodiak bears are the second most dangerous. So long as they hear or see you coming then in MOST cases run off, but Not Always. See hear is where the problems or issues occur.
Bear ARE SMART. They have learned what hunters are and to follow knowing they might get a free meal. IF your in the place they are and they do not hear you approach they might just turn right and attack or might get scared and run off.
#3 Blacks are for the most part not going to come at people and run off. UNLESS its a mom with cubs and you get inbetween. Then you will have trouble.
When in the wilderness you should never go out to someplace without a gun on you. Its just basic common sense. I have never been South of Alaska to a big city. Im sure I wouldnt know how to act and what to do and what not to do. You would find MY behavior very funny no doubt. What can I say?
In conclusion. Im an Air Taxi Pilot. I earn my living flying people in and out of anyplace. So PLEASE COME to the Alaskan wilderness to hunt and fish, but please know what to do.

I have a question. If you know you are going after a large animal would it be inconvenient to bring in some kind of sled to put in the blind so carrying out the meat would be easier?
I know some hunters who only take the best parts and leave a lot of it there.
So maybe that's what the bear was used to - hearing a shot, following the smell or sound, and finding easy dinner.

I don't think that he was a dinner bell bear because 1) he seemed surprised to see humans and 2) he didn't stand his ground for the carcass. I think he smelled the moose and was possibly stalking it. With Ken squatted down, the bear probably wasn't certain about what he was until he saw him fly after swiping him. And he probably ran off when realizing another human was there.
The attack was neither predatory or defensive. I assume territorial. Even when they found him, he was extremely agitated.

I hope that doesn't happen. What makes me most frustrated is how the First Nations People are not allowed to manage animals on their land. In the U.S. Native Americans can hunt whenever they want. Seems more fair to me, except other parts of the relationships, etc.

Why kill the bear?? He was going after the downed moose! The man was at the carcus so the bear attacked to claim the carcus! If you don’t take proper precaution and have respect for things that can kill you then you should probly stay home or find another hobby! Killing the bear was unnecessary! And yes I am a hunter for over 30 yrs.

It's just me...but why go out into the wilderness and kill a beautiful animal like a moose?? The same goes for the bear. I do understand the legitimacy of hunting as a sport, and with respect, just saying!! All three would be alive today, if not for this episode of hunting and the out of control situations that can and did occur.

Guys stop judging hunters with your uninformed and city ppl views. Remember that America and many communities, families and even whole states hunt for many reasons. Culture, sustenance, keeping animal population down for various helpful reasons, bonding with others, a hobby, or any number of reasons.
Please stop judging. I bet you do plenty that outdoor folks think is dumb. And if you eat meat or veggies one way or the other you are no different. Factory Farming of either both kill uncountable animals and their habitats. Hunters when they have say a moose to eat all winter just kill the one animal and they worked for it and use it all. In that time you eat many animals that had to be kept in small cages then killed for your/our lazy butts. Food for thought. Pun intended.

Apparently from your explanation and the details by John's hunting partner. The Bear approached the Kill site undetected until it was mere yard's away, having been attrached by the Blood scent in the Air from the previous evening's Killing? Or it had discovered the Kill earlier during the Nite & morning, when the pair were gone. IT then had moved off & out of Sight upon Thier return too the Moose Carcass, the following Day. Upon the Two Hunter's return for more of the Meat. When it did approach the Kill Site again. IT must have expected John's presence, or seen Him & Smelled His scent, but the sudden appearance of the Second Human, was sudden enough too Startle & scare it away. By the behavior of the Bear 🐻🐻 during the encounter. IT was attracted too the Kill by the Gunshot, the Blood smell in the Air, and then finding the Dead Moose & the Gut pile n entrails.
Upon that notion it then awaited in ambush for John & His partner to come back, where upon it attacked & Killed John immediately.
By the explanation of the Partner. That the Bear only once swatted at John, & sent Him flying several feet from His Moose Carcass. The massive Swat was intended too Kill Him or at least neatralize Him at Once? Whatever intention the Bear 🐻🐻 had? Thank God John was Saved the pain, agony, & the brutal Mauling that could have occurred, if He hadn't Died quickly and mercefully from that Deadly Blow too His Head.
FGI When Hunter's are out in the Wilds, hunting. Some of the uninformed or naive People ask why the Hunter's? Insist on returning too the Kill again or numerous Times? For this questions answer. These ugh 🤔naive people need too visualize the Massive Size of a Bull or a Cow Moose? Then figure how long it's gonna take too Cut it up for Carrying it back too Camp. Basically the Killing can take mere moments or a few Minutes. But once the Animal is Down, that's when the really true Work begins. The work of butchering a Fully grown Moose can intail Five too Eight Hours of strenuous hard & continuous back breaking labor. Since these Adult animals can Weigh in excess of 1800 Lbs especially for a Specimen from the Northern portions of Thier Habitat. So it's usually a Full Day to Two Day job of getting them back to Thier Base Camp's. So Sorry for being Long Winded, but Thanks So Much again for Sharing the Story. Hopefully John is RIP, and His Family are Well? 👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🤔🤔👏👏
PS. The aquirring of a Moose Tag or License now is a really Special event these Day's? Just because once one has filled such a Tag? They have then gotten enough Meat 🍖🥓 to last an entire year or better. For the sake of predators. They can feed on one Moose for Two or Three week's, along with the other wild animals that vey for it's nourishments as Well. Thanks Again.

That is a good question. The sourced didn't indicate that the hunters had left the moose carcass over night but that makes more sense.

@@scarybearattacks Thank You for Your Kind and thoughtful answer.
IN reading some of the other comments. There was one from NW Montana that was questioning the Bears 🐻🐻 different ways and Habit's in cases of encountering Humans.
As I have been a resident of Wyoming now for Forty plus year's. I've been informed and witnessed that the Bears in these region's? Are still apparently Fearful of Man for the most part, and they usually will still Flee when encountering Mankind. From what I've read & heard this isn't so in the Northern Region's.
I'M a firm believer that the Bear's have been slowly, but most assuredly they have been adapting and again evolving too the point? That they are now Losing Their Fear of Man again, and are starting too consider us a full blown element of Their Domain again. IF this is So? Then we are just another item of Food 🥑🥝🥑 on Their Lists. Thank You Again.

Here is what Google says about the Eastern Canadian Rockies. "The eastern slopes extends from the high alpine slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains down to the foothills and into the transition into the Prairies ecozone." There is a geographic area known as the Rocky Mountain Trench. See reference here: www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/rocky-mountain-trench
