"Adirondack Wilds Railroading" Big Moose NY

  • On May 4, 2024, my trusty canine companion Witold (vee-told) and I headed up to Big Moose NY to video a New England Rail Excursions (NEREX) charter at the summit (2040 feet) of Adirondack Railroad's line. This point was also the summit of New York Central's Adirondack Division as well as the highest elevation reached on any mainline tracks operated by this "fallen flag."
Northbound and southbound views of the nearly 30 railcars (a/k/a "putt-putts," "speeders," and "motor cars") are featured.

Thanks for a great show!! Loved the video. I REMEMBER the Putt Putts. They were powered by small two stroke engines and would only fire when needed and kinda relax if not pulling. I am originally from Illinois and lived close to ICC RR lines.. MY favorite things were the flame thrower weed killers they used in the 50's.That was so long ago they were not even painting graffiti on trains yet. YEP, them wuz the good ole days..

The Sante Fe war bonnet was always a favorite paint theme. ... We have a BNSF depot here in town where they do crew changes and we still see that paint job fairly regularly ... sixty some years ago all my HO trains were painted SanteFe colors

I love the site you chose. You get the impression that there is nothing but woodland for miles around. I never saw so many putts-putts at one time. They must have been very wide use at one time. Excellent video! Keep them coming.

I think that piece of metal you found is part of a railroad anchor, that's put on either side of the fish plates to hold it in place from lateral movement.

A front row seat with no competition kind of like the Indy 500 you're the only spectator well except for Witold who would apparently rather be home. @7:20 that modernistic one was the last hurrah for Motorcars and I remember many in views of Canadian National but I question if they really sold any in the US. The one exception was the US Army as there are about six of them here in Milwaukee at their 757 th training battalion. Having ridden a few they are fun but the two biggest drawbacks is the noise so you need ear protection and bring some decent seat cushions the ride is rough. Owners need to have good mechanical skills and parts availability to keep these running. If yours fails on the road and you can't get it going within a few minutes outcomes the toolbar to either push you or pull you which reduces the speed and makes that other car work harder. Just watching these remind me of the late seventies early eighties when several times a year I'd see Jimmy Shoto who patrolled the being triple track main line from Union Avenue in Chicago do either Eola or Aurora on the West End where he got to put on about 70 Mi a day with the trustee yellow Fairmont and the trailer for parts and tools. Snow or rain or heat off he went and over the years his car got hit three times but he was alert enough to see the disaster coming and none were his fault. No doubt deceased by now every time I drive across the bridge on the Dan Ryan freeway where the tower used to be he truly was the first line of defense on the old Burlington Everywhere West
