"Brains AND Brawn" Adirondack Railroaders

  • MOVING a caboose BY HAND? Plenty of brawn needed! This "special move" was accomplished by tough-as-nails Adirondack railroaders on June 5, 2024 when a caboose, painted in Conrail colors, was hand-pulled out of a siding in Thendara NY. The caboose was to be used as a shoving platform (once the Utica-Tupper Lake tie train reached Sabattis) for a twenty mile shove to Tupper Lake.
This video captures the caboose-pulling episode together with views of the train crossing the Mohawk River, Utica, on Remsen Hill in Prospect, in Forestport Station and, finally, in Thendara, the half-way point on the route to Tupper Lake.
The first 23 miles of the trip were on the rails of the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern and two of the MA&N's engines were up front. Behind them: two Adirondack locomotives. Once Remsen's Snow Junction was reached, the MA&N engines were uncoupled and the freight then entered Adirondack's home rails for the journey to Tupper Lake, the end of the tourist hauler's line.
The ties will be used in the reconstruction of the Tupper Lake wye and other projects around the Adirondack town's handsome station.

Enjoyed video very much, in 1957 my dad rented a summer cabin on First Lake in the Fulton Chain, my grandfather traveled with us from Rochester by car but had to leave early to return to Omaha, we put him on NYC #165 in Thendara for Utica where he transferred to the Ohio State Limited westbound. My father took a color slide of this train by the Thendara station and I now have it and it’s much prized shows a NYC RS3 and four coaches, train ran daily from Utica to Lake Placid and back. It was great to see the location again in your video. Tom Koller, Denver

It seemed to be a rather nice day to be out for some railroading action, and those Alcos looked pretty sharp for their age! Thanks for sharing the sights, as I watch from near the southern shores of the Salish Sea (aka Puget Sound), in the suburbs of the Pacific Northwest, just north of Tacoma, WA. Hope to see Witold 🐕 back out with you in future videos. 😊

Watching in Telford, Pennsylvania. Enjoyable as always!
Small world. I occasionally park in a parking garage in Lansdale, PA to work from my "traveling office". It overlooks a small rail yard that is home to Pennsylvania Northeastern Railroad. They interchange with CSX here, serve some industries, and also interchange with East Penn Railroad in Telford as well as New Hope & Ivyland in Warminster (might be a closer relationship with them). Anyhow, I ran into an acquaintance you know. DIdn't get his name, but he is from Schenectady and railfanning down here. He's a conductor out of Selkirk.

As always, another great video. I hope your assistant was working hard back in the office since he's not supervising you this trip. 😅 Watching from Lisbon, Maine. Those 2 GP's in the handsome green and silver paint remind me of Maine Eastern when it was running here. 😢 Now Fingerlakes is covering that route but lost its biggest freight customer (Dragon cement is closing its plant) so their plans and hopes for scenic rail runs is doubtful. Sigh. Thanks again!

Very nice down on of the train going through the big bridge. All of the cars were from CSX and are in the numbering system for MOW service but can still go offline. With you standing on the platform some of those ties look used While others appeared to be new but may have been sitting awhile. Trusting that they will pick up a backhoe with a clamp on it to help distribute the ties. It's always good to see major work happening as it prevents mishaps down the line. If we're lucky today Milwaukee won't see rain for the first time in seven days

Great video - love the perspective. That bridge is in desperate need of new ties, at the least. Inheriting structures like this must be a nightmare for shortlines. You could sink your entire annual maintenance budget into a single bridge or viaduct, not doing so could shut down all or part of your line, or be a risk for accidents.
