Building seaQuest DSV, an R/C Model Submarine [Part 2]

- At RapidNadion, we're no strangers to R/C submarines. Our USS Baton Rouge and USS Virginia models have long patrolled the waters of Long Island's East End, diving and surfacing and even firing a few missiles along the way. But those were dynamic-diving boats; we've never tackled a static-diving submarine, and we've never tried building anything as complex as seaQuest DSV, the super-submarine from the 1990s TV show of the same name. Not, that is, until now.
Join us for the second of four videos covering the design and construction of our 51" seaQuest DSV, a 3D-printed replica of the original studio maquette which we purchased from Bob Martin of Nautilus Drydocks. In part 2 of the series, we cover gaining access to the hull, testing the propulsion system, and planning out the placement of the depth control system. Stay tuned for future installments as our build progresses, and be sure to let us know what you think of our R/C seaQuest model aspirations; drop us a line in the comments below!
Special thanks to Bob Martin for his assistance with this build. Visit him at nautilusdrydocks.com for more on the art and craft of radio-controlled submarines.

Sad this never got finished, I am in the middle of re-watching SeaQuest DSV.
Where'd you find the series?
@@Servellion that’s why I’m here…
OHHHH SHITTT RAPIDNADION UPLOADING AGAIN HELLLLL YEAHHHH.
Nick Tripod YEEEEAAAAHHHH
Yea finnaly...They upload like 1 video in 2 months or 5 months :P
lol it is true
Awesome video, as always, guys!
A quick side-note before I get to the meat and potatoes of suggestions. I'm the guy that created the model that the RapidNadion team is working on. It was the first iteration of our upcoming kit. Our new version, a 1:300 scale (40.25" long) kit is now complete and we're taking orders. Info at www.nautilusdrydocks.com!
Okay, that said, here are some thoughts:
-Hull is cut. No point talking over other potential access cuts, but a simple slice right at the midline would likely have offered best ease-of-access.
-Propulsion: Vectored thrust like a jet-ski. I'll be releasing an R/C conversion kit for my kit that features this control method. The benefit is that you can actuate not only yaw, but pitch control from the same control surfaces. Envision a circular nozzle that actuates not only horizontally, but vertically as well.
-Ballast: That big central sphere is PERFECT for a ballast tank. Use it!

Awesome! Loved DSV and looking forward to seeing this one.
And the hype level just keeps rising!
This guy needs more subs, its kind of depressing how the actual quality almost never gets the deserved recognition.
brilliant! great project... looking forward to the next installment
such a huge seaQuest fan and cannot wait to see this thing.
I just subscribed yesterday! No matter what happens, PLEASE keep uploading, you will always have me watching!
Awesome!!!! Love this series!
you should do a big cargo ship and the containers that when it shinks dude ways like the britanic and the containers fell off of the ship
Kayden Denning that will be cool
I know it's late, but I just watched this. Fun fact: you guys posted it on my birthday! I'd say that it was a really good gift even if unintentional! Thanks!
Oh darn i hoped when i watched part 1/4 that was uploaded a year ago to be able to watch all 4 parts, now i have to be patient! .... keep it up, love to see the result. :)
I want to see the USS Zumwalt please do it when you finish this project! Luv you guys
Still super stoked
Just rewatched all the episodes as they have been showing them over here in the U.K. A thought for painting the Seaquest when you are ready. Have you heard of lace painting? First paint the whole model the lighter blue of the edges of the mottled outer skin. Then get some lace or net/mesh (you can add a fine layer of spray mount if you want ti to hug all the curves) then spray over with the darker grey. When you peel off the lace you'll have a perfect Seaquest paint job.
Really looking forward to seeing it finished and diving👍
Yes I love Rapidnadion👌👌😀
worth the wait!
Any update on this amazing model?
I think to get people more involved plus views upload a bunch of little parts of what you how you would fix it, in a simpler way make more tinker segments like these
Yay I missed this channel
ikr!
Is there a part 3 and 4 yet to this build. Sure would like to see more of it.
MIchael, and all Seaquest fans, we are still determined to get this boat to operational status. We get to a point where we think we have a mechanical breakthrough and then we have a setback and have to come up with another idea, material list, and build plan, but we are confident we will wind up with a functional Seaquest.
@@Rapidnadion Any update?
Any new updates on the project
Ahhhhhh, no video 3 or 4, what a shame, model looked awesome!
Very very nice 👍
What's the name of the model ship that is sitting next to the sea quest at 0:55?
WWll Sumner class destroyer USS Hank DD-702. Thanks for your interest, Jared.
I am still longing for this finished build ~
As a US NAVY Retired Submariner I can't wait to see this will it be going commercial?
We're not sure what you mean by 'going commercial'..
Long time no see rapid nadion
Hi there.. were you able to finish the sea quest dsv model? been waiting for it.. thanks please update me..
oh yeah, this channel still exists ;)
Do you think you could like "disect" whats left of the baton rouge wreck if you still have it?
YOUR BACK!
patiently waiting to see the cracken. beautiful design. and i do have some suggestions if u wanna hear them.
Happy to hear them!
U could give it a pivot where the circle is so that u can change depth by aiming the nose down while moving forward. Or up. U can study the movement of the squid to include thrusting tentacles. Like a fire hose....
Would love to see the port holes light up with fiber optic cables!!
Is this still being worked on? It's so crazy I can imagine it having not worked out, but, if it DID, that'd be kind of amazing. I found this while searching for Seaquest videos and am very curious now. If you're still trying, then good luck!
great work guys
but i've got a question about your propulsion system. doesn't it need an inlet to suck in water before letting the propellor shoot it out the nosle?
Ya they said they would add one
After this one is done you guys should build a US Battleship like Missouri or North Carolina or Alabama
Yeeeeeeessss!!!! Awesome!
Yay!!!!
Are the .stl files being shared? I would love to build a smaller version.
Hello, where did you find the new 27mhz radio? I thought they were all gone. Watching your build with interest.
Tower Hobbies, 4GWD 4 channel Futaba.
Hope you add servos to the drag vanes for steerage as they were intended. Left turn left fin extends outward, etc.
They were also partly intended at thrust vectoring devices, I believe.
I love your voice so much
I wanna see part 3):
YES YOU IS BACK
I feel like you should make a rc titanic since you've done all the sinking ones
Stay tuned. :)
Yay., I always wanted to make one so this could be the best reference for building one
Rapidnadion woooo!
finally:)
I'll be waiting for the finished product! Next, build the oil tanker that the front opens up to gobble up USA and Russian subs. I can't remember which Bond movie that is from?
I can’t find part 3 or 4... do they exist?
Have you considered making the Usos seaview from voyage to the bottom of the sea
@rapidnadion Any news on how Seaquest is coming along?
Stuart, although not on the highest priority list, Seaquest build continues to see modest progress.
YOU say in the title it is a part 4 series , was wondering where the other 2 videos are of Part 3 and 4
Wow, Looks like cutting the unit up may have been easier and less problematic using a hot knife and or hotwire equipment. I know this is late, but I just saw it and thought I would mention it. Likely this old news seeing you have over 37K views.I was also curious as to why you have 90-degree elbows on thrust. It would seem this would work against your forward thrust as part of the energy would be canceled by the flow at the intersection and create wasted eddy currents
keep it up
Try adding carnards and allerons for better mobility and it may help it to sink in and out faster.
Any news on Building the SeaQuest DSV an R/C Model [Part3] and [Part 4]
hope it goes well
yay their not dead anymore :D its a dream come true!
What about mimicking a real squid and place directional thrusters in the head of the dsv ?
I wonder how much that cost I would love to have one of them
O. O Nice work. When comes the next video?
Any progress on the Sea Quest project. I know the guy who builds these so I'm curious to see someone convert it to RC.
We've just completed an intricate build and are now pursuing finishing SeaQuest submarine.
where is rapidnadion from?
Are you guys still working on this or has it been scrapped?
Still at it.. slow going, we know.
@@Rapidnadion Well keep it up!!! You guys have got this!!! Can't wait to see when it's finished!!!
and the other two parts of the SeaQuest tutorial?
AH YEAH YOU'RE BACK!!!!!!!
Ever think of making a model Hunley?
bout craped my self when I found out he uploaded
Did you ever finish the build?
Its 2018 and Seaquest are calling for their sub
you guys are doing so many models that I love I really love you and your model s but please please please please please make a the battle ship Missouri please please reply
Will you ever build a Bismarck tho the scale to the kitty hawk?
I'm thinking this project is dead 😭
As an old "pig boat" submariner I wonder if you could usr the output of your water jets to push the sub up or down in the water. Perhaps that would function to make the boat rise or fall in the water. Both wateriest would point up or down in unison. Steering and submergence would be the function of the water jets. What do you think of the idea?
let my rc dream come please
Is that Mr. Mobile on one of The shots?
You are correct.
Is the project dropped?
why not use the central where as a shroud covering center of a WTC, then let the ends "sleeve" over either side of WTC.
We thought about using the sphere as a WTC (it's what Bob Martin over at Nautilus Drydocks recommended) but the hatches we opted to install made it more practical to use one of the "football" sections for this purpose. Still, it's an option!
I'm a humble tinkerer and admire what you are doing. not a simple task to make science fiction into reality. I have a 3d printer that I CV would gladly make available for prototyping any ductwork that might make your task more feasible.
U guys still working?
is there an update coming?
We realize it's been a long time since posting progress; there have been more pressing projects getting in the way. However, work continues at a slow pace on the SeaQuest submarine.
Part 3 & 4?
Another Titanic? What more could you do to it? ;)
could you make the britanic please?
You guys should build a model of the USS Independence (or USS Freedom is a trimaran is too hard to make) and have a working gun on it that shoots 1/8 or 1/4 inch steel balls using compressed air.
Where’s part 3?????
any updates?
Our interim build has been completed so we can now finally proceed with finishing SeaQuest.
Almost a year since the last one :I
I was actually a little bit worried when I heard that you guys had an idea to "cannibalize" USS Virginia😟. but at the same time relieved to hear that you abandoned the idea. don't EVER do that to any of your ships. especially Virginia. she was only your second sub ever built and you were gonna rip her apart!? don't say stuff like that in your videos, PLEASE. PS: you guys are doing great, keep up the good work on SeaQuest.
I am also very happy you are still uploading. I have been watching you guys ever since your sinking model Titanic videos. plz do more of those.
YAYAYAyAYAYAYAY WOOOOOP WOOOOOP HEHAEHHAEHAHE THEIR STILL ALEIVEEVEVEVE
in the ball in the middle if you let it flood and let it used the water as a week so I can go down and when you want a ride open a hatch so goes to the motor and pushes the water out
3.00 you have a champ?
We do, Joseph. A forgiving airplane, very easy to fly.
YOU SHOULD MAKE AN SS NOMADIC RC MODEL
Are you MrMobile? you sound familiar
So, what happened to this project?
bilge pump motors would be a much easier and more durable method of propulsion
Correct- that is what we have installed. Rule 500.
are you guys dead?
(I know these videos take a while, but pls inform us if you are still alive)
maybe an rc tank or something
Maybe one of the d-day skirted tank landers? That would be cool
Hey guys you should make Airsoft planes or boats
Year and a half later and no update :(
Why 27 MHz? Just get a cheap FlySky fs i6 for 50 bucks, holds 20 receivers and has great programming functionality (for airplanes and helicopter) that was you can have one transmitter for everything. It is 2.4 GHz frequency hopping. It's a lot cheaper and a lot easier that way. It's 2017 get with the times ;)
2.4GHz is useless where underwater use is concerned.
Oh, I see
