Few years ago I was out walking down an old cat road deer hunting. Up ahead of me about 100 yards was a cougar in the middle of the road. I stop, It turn looked at me and hunched down walked into the bush. That feeling you get when you are being hunted really got the blood flowing. I backed up to a small hill and told my partners to come get me. I don't know I just felt like I shouldn't have walked out of there.

Most interactions with cougars do not end up with a situation where the human is attacked, there has only been less than 1 attack per year even in a large state like california.

Similar story. I was walking through the woods out near a bayou about a year ago, late summer. I was by myself, and I'd been hoping to spot a black bear or maybe the infamous rougarou, but I didn't see this thing until it was almost too late. I was walking down the trail and my phone, which was on full volume, started ringing. Not a second later did that cat burst out of the bush in front of me to left left and high tail it in the other direction

when you were talking about cougars being house cats I thought about how I deal with my cat when he's bad. I just scooped him up and kiss his face. I don't think that works for cougars.

I'm a hunter who believes in coexistence with large predators. I grew up with take only what you need.
Also I know small scale farmers who deter predators and only kill if the have no other choice.
My pov is that we should try to coexist and only act in self defense.

Hunters confuse me. First, they argue that they are keeping the deer population down in place of big predators. Then they kill off said big predators, because they might reduce the population of deer.

    • @VoilaTadaOfficial

Hunters are people and come with all the different views that people have. Some do it for food, some do it for sport, some do it for thrill, and some do it for some other reason. And similarly, they have differing opinions on carnivores. Some want fewer to protect their family, some want more to reduce the amount of hunting necessary to quell overpopulating prey. Some want them to stay nearby so they can see them from time to time and some want them to stay in the wilds away from civilization. Some want them so they can hunt more dangerous prey and some don't want them anywhere because of how dangerous they have the potential to be. Surely there's more opinions I'm missing but the point here is that hunters don't agree with each other just like politicians don't agree with each other, because they're all human.

With respect sir, it is a very good idea to actually look into the license and hunting tag systems in the US. It may change your view on hunters being blood thirsty and cold blooded.
The type, gender, weight, location, season, and down to the ways you can kill the prey like the caliber of bullet are heavily regulated. The tags are designed in such a way that it promotes sustainability between species. For example, you can only hunt most species in the autumn season and in very limited quantity.
As for really big game animals, the exact individuals are targeted for very specific reason. Like an old male black rhino has lost the ability to provide for the other rhinos and has killed some other younger male rhinos in the region. The tag for that old rhino was therefore put in auction for the right to kill it, and the millions of profit form the auction is put directly back into wildlife conservation in Africa.
It's very hard to explain all this in a comment. But i strongly encourage you to research more into this. May change your mind on this.

About the cougar vs man fight, I watched an account of a woman who survived an attack when the cat bit her hand. She shoved her arm down it's throat, which is dangerous because it has sharp curved teeth, but in this case, the cat actually gagged and through up her arm, then panicked and ran away from her. The lady needed stitches in her arm, but it's better than being killed.

Actually, newer studies show that standing still may up one's risk of becoming puma chow. There was a study from the University of California, Davis, that looked at around 200 puma attacks from the last hundred years. The study also found, however, that those who ran had a slightly higher chance of being killed in an attack-28 percent of those who fled died as a result of injuries, compared with 23 percent of those who remained motionless during big cat attacks. About 39 percent who moved away slowly when approached by a mountain lion escaped without injury.
On the other hand, people who froze were the least likely to escape injury when a mountain lion attacked. Only 26 percent of them escaped. They also had the greatest frequency of severe injuries: 43 percent of those who stood still in the face of a lion were badly injured compared with 17 percent of those who fled, according to the study.
So the best combo is probably make yourself look big, shout, throw stuff, and back away slowly.

An example of an attack from a large predator in Montana. A guy was bow hunting a few years ago, and he stumbled into a grizzly bedding area. He was mauled, and lived. When he was interviewed he stressed the fact that the bear wasn't to be blamed. He walked into it's territory, and it reacted how bare would.

Hank, a few years ago, a young male cougar met his unfortunate demise at the hands of the Chicago Police Department, after wandering all the way from South Dakota into a residential neighborhood on the north side if the city. The CPD felt that it would have been too dangerous to attempt to tranquilize and relocate the animal, because the area where the cougar had been cornered (after many sightings) was a densely populated place and they would not have been able to restrict the animal's movements while a tranquilizer took its effect.

As an outdoorsman, cougars scare me far more than bears. Bears aren't ambush predators, so you can often see them coming and take precautions such as bear spray or bullets, should it prove necessary. Cougars hit you from behind, often before you know they are there, which makes them way more terrifying.

From what I've heard of the Northwest woods I am far more afraid of being gone after by a serial killer than a cougar or any other animal. Also serials are a species that are actively going after me versus a cougar who does not want to run into me at all. So yah, I think humans are far scarier than any other animal who just wants to live their life.

Yah, the US wildlife services are trying to covertly protect the cougars by pretending they don't exist. They live in wooded river valleys and forest pockets all over the eastern USA. I think it's more important to teach people to coexist with the big cats and recognize their crucial role in balancing the ecology. We have deer overpopulation down here that wreaks havoc on crops and spreads tick-based diseases in people and animals.

At the beginning with man vs cougar idea, they kinda joking around but there was a survival story where a dude grabbed a mountain lion by the tongue. He got mauled up pretty bad but he lived. Or the dude who got attacked from behind and it grabbed his back pack. He just took off his back pack. It lost the element of surprise and ran off.
Also where i was going to school. In 2012 a cougar was shot in my back yard. Because it was killing people pets. And killing deer next to college dorms. It was also spotted sleeping in peoples window wells. It gotten to comfortable around people so sadly it was put down. So it just roamed the city like it was its city. People were scared to go out at night. But i do love cougars the're pretty amazing, effective creatures that deserve respect.

The relationship Americans have with cougars seems similar to Finns and wolves. Wolves in Finland are even more endangered and kill even less people. They can be a threat to the property of some people raising reindeer, but wolves haven't caused any human deaths in Finland for over 120 years at this point. Most people will never have to deal with them and yet the fear of them is quite disproportional. I studied the changes in wolf population for a school paper some years back. The population is up a little and public image of wolves is a tad better as people are taking its endangerment more seriously, but it runs a serious risk of taking a hit if they become a little more common and sightings of wolves increase.

The fox seems about as sociable and domesticated as my cat... he's practically feral.

Why is it called a Warthog though? It doesn't really look like a pig, I think it looks like a puma.
