I love how Hank just starts of with "I have something I need to show you" >starts undressing And Henry is just "whoawow, let's wait with that until we get to know each other a little better" XD
My dad collects vaseline glass. They are antiques that are made from glass that contains small amounts of fluorescent material, which makes them glow in UV light. It is very cool.
Yes everyone.. please go sub to Animal Wonders. Too many people who accidentally stumble onto her videos and get all high and mighty about how caging animals is wrong.. need more positive understanding people over there. :)
Joe Lights because most of their animals are rescued, not captured by them in the wild. and a lot of them wouldn't survive in the wild, so they take care of them to educate others about them.
I don't know bud, 5 years lifespan in the wild vs. outliving humans. You better live a great 5 years to make up for all that math. Good owners can responsibly open things up but the moment you teach your bird to fly is the beginning of fatal danger. Hawks are everywhere and dgaf; public won't be too keen on you drawing down on a hawk in a park neither. why dont u let an infection take its course? just think a little bit about this love for nature you seem to have that somehow separates you from nature itself.
Hank, Henry, Jessie and "Grey". Physics, chemistry and biology together. I think this was a very nice episode :) Also I would love to see more colaborations of different EDUyoutubers :> But anyways, all of you are awesome ^^ And silly Hank.. Smiling like a child the entire video.. So adorable :')
I thought with Hank's degree in chemistry he would know what fluorescence is. Also, what is with the music in the background? (I heard Caro Emerald, didn't know her music penetrated in the US.
Not a disappointment at all. As host, in order to expand the information given to the audience, he has to either elaborate on subjects himself (as I'm sure he could), or get the guest to do it. Good hosts get their guests to be the 'stars' of the show, by cueing them somehow to present the information required. Go watch old Johnnie Carson TV shows to learn how to be a great host! Even today's talk show hosts need to do that. I'd say that Hank's pretty good at his job.
Its kind of funny because I came to my room, turned off the light and just noticed how bright the glow in the dark stars on the ceiling were glowing closer to the lamp.. I went "hmm, I wonder what makes them glow like that." Then I came on youtube, saw this video now I know the answer.
I'm curious too, but if he doesn't want to show his face that's his decision and we should respect that. besides, I find whenever you reveal someone's face after years of mystery it can be underwhelming when you do finally see it. best keep it a mystery, it's more fun that way!
I think Grey would be a really interesting guest to have on the Talkshow. Thing is, there's a big pond called the Atlantic Ocean between the quarters of Scishow and Grey's current homeplace. Plus, he's a teacher and European holidays don't always match American holidays.
Three articulate, intelligent and funny people. Excellently presented information. Keep it coming. You, and other, are what makes the web a place to grow. Thank you Rick
hey hank, love the show. have you ever considered a splash graphic across the top of the screen showing when jessie's animal guest's family evolved? you could have a couple of time line markers like man (at 5mins to 12 obviously) and one or two of the mass extinctions. just an idea. i love the show and even caught you being a robot on some mad rap battle. loved it
Actually, although birds can see UV light, according to a documentary I saw on birds, they didn't evolve to have any UV light specific patterns in their feather color pigment. Apparently we don't really know why.
But there are birds that do react differently, when they see those UV patterns on their fellows, or when its blocked. So it seems to have some purpose in hat regards.
Some plants have UV tracks though. Usually made for insects, like beetles. 'horn-like' flowers use it to point out where the nectar is, so the beetles go in deep and get covered in pollen in the meantime. I don't know about birds though, and I don't see why hummingbirds for example would need that if it's there for them, but who knows there might be something similar :)
If it is not in the pigment, then It may be the physical micro-structure of feathers. You can have UV reflection and colour pattern due to surface structures similar to butterflies
Thank you for putting the solution to the puzzle in a different video! I was not going to have enough self-control to skip the answer, and I'm delighted that you designed this video in a way that doesn't spoil the puzzle.
Before I check out the answer video, I'm putting my theory here: 1. Separate into two piles, one of the number of fluorescent coins and one of the remainder 2. Flip ALL the coins in the pile the size of the number of fluorescent I believe that will always balance the number of fluorescent coins. I don't want to write up a formal proof though.
I guess since CGP Grey couldn't be on the show (since he doesn't want to show his face on camera), they decided to give him some presence by wearing that shirt.
5:20 I have watched to this point, and I'm fairly certain I have a solution. (Padding to ensure a "Read More" doesn't spoil the solution) (More padding) (More padding) Move 21 pennies to pile A. Flip all of them. Move all other pennies to pile B. Flip none of them. Why this works: Let A be the number of fluorescent pennies in A, and B the number in B. A+B=21; this is given. A=21-B; this is given by algebra. Flipping all pennies in A causes A to become equal to 21-A. Now, 21-A=21-B. This becomes A=B.
what you just did there was: A=21-B A=21-A therefore 21-A=21-B, so A=B. thats not how it works at all. sorry to reply to a two year old comment. you probably dont care anymore but the fact that this had 4 upvotes had me worried.
A wierd thought occured to me. The first human voice recorded was in 1860. I wonder if there was a parrot or other speaking bird around years before that learned to mimic a voice and was then recorded repeating it after the invention of the technology and thus sort of pre date the 1860 recording in a way? Perhaps by decades as parrots live a really long time (I told you it was a wierd thought)
***** The technical definition of a parrot: a bird, often vividly colored, with a short down-curved hooked bill, grasping feet, and a raucous voice. And Lindsey said it was a parrot. We just call them parakeets because they are smaller than bigger parrots like macaws.
***** Did you even listen to Jessi as she explained the definition of what a Conure is? LouLou is most definitely a parrot. Not only that, but nowhere in the comment KustomFu made was it stated that they were stating that LouLou was a parrot ( which he is ), only that, in their opinion, parrots are awesome. It seems that being made of awesome does not exclude you from being wrong due to assumption and ignorance.
Split into two even piles. If they are even you then know that for every extra florescent penny in one pile, you have an extra non-florescent in the other. Simply flip all the pennies in one of the piles. You will not know how many florescent pennies you have, but you will know that they are equal between the two piles.
As just a wild guess, before checking any other videos, I'm going to answer: Place 21 pennies at random into a pile, and flip all 21 of them over. No clue if that is correct, but I suppose that I'll know soon enough!
But that just reverses the number of visible fluorescent vs not. So say you have 21 pennies and (unknown to you) 7 of them are fluorescent side up. Then you flip every one of the 21 pennies and you have 14 fluorescent side up and 7 down.
Jan Babiuch-Hall That isn't what stellar was saying, he was saying take 21 at random from the larger pile which you know has 21 fluor. up's all together... so then, (unknown to you) the 7 up's that you took would leave 14 in the original pile, so then when you flip the 21 over it makes 14 up's in the new pile, which is the same! And you can change the 7 for any number
Maybe I shouldn't be saying this, but if you use Firefox browser with Ad Block Plus (and No Script, recommended!), then you can watch everything on RUclips without any advertisements. The ads are simply skipped so that I forget there even are ads still there annoying others. Yeah, prolly best that most don't use Firefox, so forget I said anything.
Rahul Poddar Are there plugins for Chrome to enable downloading of RUclips videos? I'm very fond of saving music videos, for instance, off of RUclips. NoScript and Ghostery are 2 other reasons I use Firefox. Well, when using Tor, too, comes packaged to work with Firefox. Otherwise, I will admit that without plugins, Chrome is my favorite browser, or at least was back when I used it.
It's like all the people who subscribe to this show, all subscribe to the same other shows, it's kinda cool, like a mini RUclips community, and watching it grow, both subscribers and providers, has been fun and awesome, I gotta get that suppaple? How ever it is :) I will.
Only physicists will get this joke: How many theoretical physicists specialising in general relativity does it take to change a lightbulb? Two, one to hold the light bulb and one to rotate the Universe

Hank, I love how you run an entire channel about science and you shine UV light directly into your eyes. Brilliant. :)

CGP grey, minute physics and scishow all together? MY LIFE IS COMPLETE :D

My dad collects vaseline glass. They are antiques that are made from glass that contains small amounts of fluorescent material, which makes them glow in UV light. It is very cool.
I have a small collection. We call it uranium glass (that's the thing that fluorescent material). Its so cool!
Apparently some "vaseline glass" is Uranium glass. You should probably stay away from his collection.
Always great to see Jessi.

Why is it high and mighty to just want nature to take it's course?

when you said that you might know the voice of I thought we were finally going to see CGP gray's face
lol "it hurts to look at" lol
I love Henry. He is so awesome! I am glad to see him on Sci Show Talk Show.
1:50-- "This is a cup of pennies"
"I agree"
12:00 lol he is so distracted by that
Oh Hank don't burn your eyes!
My Aunt had a blue-crown conure, and she was the sweetest thing. She was very smart and she loved to play peek-a-boo!
Apparently general relativity makes you absolutely ripped. Good heavens MinutePhysics ...what is your workout regimen?
Ripped? Being in healthy, decent shape is not the same as being ripped. Far from it.
Cool.
Im glad i just learned about light giving of when electrons jump up.
In highschool
Is it odd that I find Henry attractive?... Very attractive?... No, I Ty isn't, because he is...
Hank Green acting like a little kid with that UV flashlight made me almost cry from laughing.
Hooray! Henry!
love sci show talk show

I love the Neil Patrick Harris add before the video started
I will be so blown away if they manage to get CGPGrey on the show..
We need more of these challenges, they're F*ckn awesome
Henry Reich on SciShow wearing a CGPGrey shirt. NERDGASM!
Any chance of seeing CGP Grey's mysterious face any time soon?
I'm curious too, but if he doesn't want to show his face that's his decision and we should respect that. besides, I find whenever you reveal someone's face after years of mystery it can be underwhelming when you do finally see it. best keep it a mystery, it's more fun that way!

Waiting for Jessi to say "Yu no nuthin, jun snuu"
I love how entertained hank was with the conure
Henry!!
This penny bit is just like a recent Car Talk puzzler. The solution is pretty fun.
Watching Hank with that parakeet was surprisingly beautiful.

They see these UV colors because it's the same vision Insects have. This way they can hunt more efficiently.
Its cool that you are having the guys from the other channels on.
Thank you for putting the solution to the puzzle in a different video! I was not going to have enough self-control to skip the answer, and I'm delighted that you designed this video in a way that doesn't spoil the puzzle.
you can no longer see the answer.
Hank Green + Henry Reich + CGPGrey shirts = Yes!

Have on CGP with a blurry face! PLEASE

I`m thrilled!
OMG I LOVE MINUTEPHYSICS!!!
Yay Henry!!!
I like Henry he seems like and awesome person. Maybe he can be a guest again?

Lorikeets in Australia are extremely loud. My flatmates had three of them... They are beautiful but soooooo loud!
Them beats in the background. Party at Hanks!

And you can change the 7 for any number
Oh, okay. I misunderstood. Thanks!
Hank's bringing in famous people for his videos!
i love Henry's vids!!!
Hank was having way too much fun with that UV light lol :-)
Take a guess: 21 was obviously the mayority of the pennies. Flip the rest over till 2 remain and devide those in two groups.
His microphone when he does his videos makes Henry sound younger than he is, to be frankly honest
today in my art class my let us watch the your videos on quiniform ... many ears ago...
You can totally tell that Jessi works with kids through the way she presents information.
I know noone is going to believe me, but I figured the coin thing out by myself in about a minute, and frankly, I want a medal ^^
Hank! Get up!
Came here for the pretty conure. Did not disappoint.
Hey Hank I was thinking you could do a show on Sailing Stones as they are very Fascinating. From a Big Fan.
The video gets a thumbs up no matter what just because Jessi shows up
Inter-molto-metric gravity, but we're gonna talk about pennies...
Hank: can't hurt to look at?
Henry: don't...yeah..that...you know the whole thing using sunglasses??...the UV light.
LOL..go save the world Henry!!
I like learning

R3Testa Right. Only for skipping ads.
Hey, they fixed it, btw, at least it's working for me; links are opening new tabs.

He changed a lot, Henry.
