    I think many people don't realize that: 1) even low-grade movements can be regulated to COSC standards, it's just that nobody pays for the official stamp, 2) there's no such thing as a COSC watch. The certificate only applies to movements. The watch assembly and casing is going to have some impact and so will the fact that the watch is not worn in completely controlled conditions (unpredictable position, temperature, humidity and so on). -10/+10 seconds a day is completely within norm but it's more convenient if the watch runs a bit faster so that you can use hacking seconds to correct it.

    my Citizen CB-0021-57 E ( Eco drive, radio controlled ) is the most accurate watch I have, and also the cheapest. I did not not need to adjust the time, or the date since I bought it in 2016 for less than Euro 350. It always shows the correct time. Accuracy is quite important to me and I am not sure if with my other automatic watches from Longines and Mido which loose more than 2 seconds a day make me really happy.

    In the first year of ownership of my Bulova Lunar Chronometer (96B258) it gained 2.2 seconds! In the second year, it gained an additional 4.8 seconds. Those 262 Khz quartz calibres are the real deal.👍

    I bought a Formex Essence 43 with green dial last year as my first “serious” watch. I absolutely love it. I get the “nice watch” comment a lot more than I expected, but other watch enthusiasts are always very curious about it. I’ve never run into a one else in person who has seen one before. Always a great conversation starter.

    I got into watches about a year ago. I've been buying entry level Swiss automatics (Tissot and Hamilton). Now I'm thinking about a vintage Omega Seamaster (either a "Calendar" or small seconds hand from 50s-60s) and a Longines Hydroconquest (41mm ceramic bezel) for my next two watches. At first I wasn't sure I'd like wearing a watch everyday but now I am obsessed. I've become a total Watch Guy. A year ago a watch was just a watch to me but now I have come to appreciate so much more about them. A year ago I also got into scotch. Next cigars. I'm becoming a proper gentleman. 😁

    I've had my SMP for about 6 months. Went on vacation last week and at the beginning I set it to the new state time. Went on 4 planes, offroading (constant hard vibrations), in water, in sun, in a sauna and after 5 days it didn't gain or lose even 1 second. Phenomenal.

    • @jolness1

      My SMP runs reliably at +5spd. On or off the wrist, no matter the temp. My Aqua Terra runs with it .1-.2spd and my sub is similar to the AT. .2spd on an 8800 is very good, they tend to be a little less accurate than the 8900

    Thanks for the great video! And very interesting topic for me… I have had watches since I was a little child and when I only had quartz, I did not care about the accuracy at all. It wouldn’t make sense to, as they were of course just… accurate. When I bought my first mechanical timepiece ironically it became more important for me to have my watches as accurate as possible, I even log the accuracy data from time to time. That lead me to get a COSC certified chronometer (a newer version of the Tissot Ballade, also on your list), and now I got an Omega Speedmaster Professional with the METAS certified 3861 caliber - this is just amazing, very very accurate. And the funny part is that after I started to write the accuracy down, I realized that one of my older quartz models is just extremely accurate. Other quartz watches gain or lose some small time, 10-20 seconds a month or so, but this remained fully accurate in a 2 month timeframe. So I googled it and the ETA caliber inside is actually really accurate. Considering the very much friendly price and the overall very nice aesthetics (i bought it in the first hand because it was one of the most beautiful chronographs that I have seen so far until that point) I think that watch also deserves to be mentioned - at least in the comment section. It is the Claude Bernard Classic (1002)

    I picked up a Bulova Precisionist 96B257, which has a high accuracy quartz movement and beats a very smooth 16 times per second. It's also 100m water resistant. The kicker was that Amazon's price briefly dropped to $206 (+ tax). It's not the prettiest watch, but it's a decent everyday wear one which you only have to set twice a year or so unless you cross time zone boundaries.
    If you really cannot stand inaccurate timekeeping I'd suggest a radio controlled watch. You have a choice of long wave radio, Bluetooth, or GPS.

  • @silentsnake-qd7xi

    I have a Bulova Precisionist, and so far it has gone 2 seconds slow in 8 months (insane). It has a 262khz movement, so the second hand sweep is extremely smooth (I think it's about 16 times per second). Also, the watch goes for around $200-$250. Highly recommend.

    I’m not an accuracy nerd, though I do keep a casual eye and enjoy doing that. Two of my most accurate watches are coincidentally the two watches I wear daily to work. I’ve got a rather physical job. One is a Ball Nightbreaker, the other a Hanhart Pioneer One. Each bought preowned, neither COSC,. The Ball is about as accurate as my METAS certified Omega, about +1/day. The Hanhart might be plus or minus 2seconds per day.
    It’s nice to have an accurate timepiece, but a well regulated Ball, Sinn I’m sure there are others that regulate a basic SW200 to well within COSC specs, as a typical baseline

    Love this subject. I’m fine with watches that run +/- 15 seconds a day. COSC would be the pinnacle when it comes to my interest in accuracy. Given that Mido can produce COSC certified watches at $1k, it’s hard for me to fathom spending any more on a watch.

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 2 года назад +1

      As you move up toward higher forms of horology, you aren’t necessarily paying for greater accuracy. You might be paying for more refined aesthetics, limited production, attention to detail such as finishing and possibly at some point hand finishing. You might be paying for additional complications. A date window is a complication taken for granted, an annual calendar is on another level of horology while a perpetual calendar still another leap. There are GMT functions, chronographs, and minute repeaters. Vulcain has an alarm. Watches use precious metals.
      In a very general sense, the more the complications involved, the less talk you hear about absolute accuracy.
      If you want absolute accuracy, you’re simply not going to do better than the phone you already have. That’s not why one buys a mechanical watch at the end if the day,

    • @Asan718
      @Asan718 2 года назад +1

      @@waterfordrs22 I should clarify my position. I was simply responding to the title of the video. For me, if it is about accuracy, then I would purchase a COSC certified Mido or a quartz watch for that matter. I am aware that there are those who place a higher value on things like perlage, geneva stripes, hand finishing, in house movements etc. While I can appreciate that, it is not what I personally value. I value an overall aesthetically pleasing watch, a good movement, and actually paying for what I am getting. For example, my next purchase will be a Hamilton Intramatic Mechanical Chrono. Beautiful watch, reliable ETA 7750 movement for $2k. In terms of Chronographs, I love the Speedmaster but even with all its superior finishing, movement etc, I personally do not believe it is worth $4k-5k more than the Hamilton. Hot take but it's just my opinion. Essentially, I have no interest in Haute Horology. Give me something that does the job at a reasonable price.

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 2 года назад

      @@Asan718 fair enough, though it’s so easy to wind up with a collection of impulse driven $500-$1000 watches that while representing good value, have zero resale value should you ever decide to consolidate your collection.
      I’ve owned three or four Hamilton watches. My first decent watch was a Hamilton. They certainly do offer great value. The Intramatic is a nice chronograph, I prefer their manual wind version minus the date. That said, a Speedmaster Pro is a very special watch, it too presents good value. I own Hamilton’s W10, the actual name I can never remember because they have several completely different watches with nearly the same name. It’s a jewel of a watch. It’s asking price despite being under a grand new is quite a bit more than the W10’s offered by others, but it’s truly a great little watch. I also own an Omega. On paper, it may or may not add up to a given person in terms of asking price, but as an object, a timepiece, holy schmokes is it something special. It’s forced me to pair down my collection and slow down my purchasing…. There’s so much more to it than accuracy.
      As for accuracy, i own a Hanhart and. a Ball, both preowned, both with SW200 movements, neither COSC, each runs day in, day out within a couple seconds of perfect time. The point being, while COSC certification is a neat thing, it’s simply not necessary if you’re on a budget to have a reliably accurate daily wear.
      Personally, after spending time on watch forums, I believe fit is the single most overlooked or misunderstood metric for purchasing a watch. Lots and lots of people buying watches that seem to instantly grab their attention, they’ve got to have it, only it’s way too large for their wrist.
      I’m curious, if you value accuracy, have you looked at any if the Grand Seiko quartz offerings? They are next level accuracy, next level almost everything.

    You talk about plus or minus 30 seconds a month as the standard accuracy of a sub $500 quartz watch. I tested 30 different quartz watches during 2 months. Price range $100,- to $400,- . 80% of these watches were within plus or minus 5 seconds a month. So that is much more accurate than stated. I am talking primarily about Seiko, Casio and some Ronda movements. So I think it's fair to say that a decent quartz watch will typically operate within plus or minus 1 or 2 seconds a week.

I love the Ball watches for the Tritium Lume and accuracy. I also love Omega for their accuracy and ultra high 15,000 Gauss anti-magnetic properties, because I work around electronics 40hrs a week and with the electro magnetic feilds of today I like to have the best accuracy of any watch I wear. I beleive things should work properly for what they are designed to do. I prefer Automatic Mechanical watches over Quartz watches for two reasons, Craftmanship and lack of battery replacement. This is maybe outside of your review parameters, but I think they deserve an honorary mention, for the sheer accuracy and utility they can provide, both for everyday watch users and for frequent travelers across timezones. Anways, thanks for the video!

      My Casio Pathfinder gets a radio time hack every night…I think this may be cheating, though! Regardless, it’s my most accurate watch & what I use to set everything else.

    I have the Tissot Ballade COSC and it runs perfectly in the parameters set. I also have a Mido Belluna GMT and it runs to the same COSC specs even though it has no certificate. I bought both for well under €500,-

    As a Quartz fan, this list is in sore need of the Citizen Chronomaster and the Longines VHP lines of watches. Citizen literally has the most accurate movement in the world and the VHP is priced very well for being a High Accuracy Quartz watch

    I just sold my Mido Multifort Chronometer after 7 months of ownership. Loved the striped dial, bracelet, and COSC movement, but the 42mm dial size is too big for me to dress-up. Also when the hour and minute hands are in certain positions the empty dial is a bit too much to handle for the eye. Wish they could produce a 39-40mm version.

    One can "fine tune" a watch's time just by position it differently. My Mido runs about 1s behind if place 12 o'clock up and about 3s fast if placed dial up or wear it. So, if it gets too fast I can just keep it in vertical position and not wear for couple of days to slow it down some.

    Great choices. I love the AT 38…my wife has one…but I wish the crown was slightly bigger….its hard to wind and set…I would probably got with the bigger model with the small seconds! Fire!

    Tissot makes also a Lelocle Chronometer, same as their usual model but: dial face is guilloched (not just pressed as their usual LeLocle model) & COSC certified.

    I would really like it if you do a review of ALPINER QUARTZ GMT. I am looking for well made, good looking traveller GMT with low maintenance, good for daily use. Casual but can be dressed up. This and perhaps the Mido Ocean Star are the only ones that fit. This is the only quartz model which I think is more practical for daily use. What do you think?

    The best value in mechanical Chronometers is in used watches from ~20 years ago. Used Omega using 1120 Chronometer (pre-coaxial) movement is the best value

    Hi Teddy, Firstly, Love your content. A huge thanks to you and your team in educating budding watch enthusiasts and driving them in the right direction.
    I just wanted to get your thoughts on the Longiness Ultrachron given that is a high beat caliber with a certain level of bragging rights to accuracy and good heritage

    I have a 2021 Aquaterra. Great watch and very accurate. I wear it almost everyday. However, had I waited a year the dials on the 2022 version have a real WOW! factor.
    I have a Tissot Gentleman with a sunburst dial that looks great, but it doesn't compare with the new Aquaterra dials.

      I also have a Tissot Gentleman (green dial) which until recently have only worn periodically for a day or two so never getting a real idea of it’s accuracy. I’ve worn the watch now for a week solid and was surprised it has run -8 seconds over a week (far better than I expected)
      Out of curiosity are you getting the same sort of accuracy or even better?
      My (I hate the term) beater watch is a black dial Quartz Victorinox I.N.O.X which I just checked writing this comment, running +4 seconds a week.

      @@Pal.Cockrum I've never been that accurate with testing. I keep the Tissot on a watchwinder most of the time. During the span of a month, it loses less than a minute. That's very good.

    I've been thinking about going OG for a timepiece and by OG I mean a pocket watch. I see Tissot has some. Do you have any recommendations or current videos on pocket watches? Are there complication pocket watches?

    The Aquis Caliber 400 is also a really accurate movement without the COSC certification, even though it is as accurate as if not more accurate then a COSC movement.

    Weirdly, my most accurate quartz watch is not my Lunar Pilot but a weird, cheap Pulsar chronograph- even though the LP is very accurate gaining a handful of seconds a year, the Pulsar gains about half of that.
    Yes, I'm well aware that this is probably a fluke (as it has no thermocompensated movement of anything) it is remarkable to see. Over the last half year (since switching to daylight saving time, when I last synchronized it) it has gained exactly one second. One. Second. It's uncanny.

    Hey Teddy I've been hooked on to your channel lately and would love it if you could check out this Indian watch brand HMT which have Citizen movement.
    They have some really good mechanical watches which are dirt cheap and probably the cheapest reliable mechanical watches ever made.
    Recommendation:- HMT Kohinoor/ Pilot/ Himalaya/ Saathi/Jhalak
    Rajat(no loger available but one of the best HMT ever made)

    Challenge Teddy!
    Would you make a video on mechanical tool watches with day/date function (or even better an Annual Calendar)? Would seem the most useful of watches to me but there appears to be a lack of choice out there! Either mechanical calendars that are too dainty for every day wear or tool watches that lack the complications...why do I only need to know the day when I'm at a theater?!
