Yea and on Eva's end, she was in them to the point of controlling what she never had control of in the first place. Partly it was because of her parents' untimely deaths, but she was projecting so much on the other sisters then.
Omg I wish Bethany had dumped Michael. Why did she even tell him about the Dandridge fund? Dude was way too pressed about his girlfriend’s inheritance. He was shady AF. Run Bethany run! 🏃🏾♀
@@VidWatcher01 Thanks for the info, I had no idea! I looked it up, it's a nice song and video. But I bet Michael convinced Bethany to use her inheritance to pay for their wedding and honeymoon 🤨
Not even exactly inheritance. Part of that money iirc was from their parents but Eva was the one busting her ass to start saving up for them. She said the house was paid off but she had to work a lot just so her sisters had a good start i.e. paying for Kareenah to go to med school and it is said that all sisters contributed but I'm sure Eva did the most since she was older and legally allowed to work.
While I appreciated Eva’s enduring love for her sisters, she was my 2nd least favorite character in this movie (Michael being my absolute least). She was too bossy, but I blame her sisters for being too codependent and passive in letting her tell them how to live their lives and marriages. I found it ridiculous that Kareenah was letting her single, child-free sister tell her when she and husband should start a family. Like WTF??
Agree Jaquci was the most codependent of them all. She got pissed when Eva told them she was moving to Chicago but I think the codependency went both ways because she just would not stay out of her sister's business.
@@VidWatcher01 Oh yeah the codependency definitely went both ways. Eva had no personal life, so she was always in her sisters' business. I agree about Jacqui; with her being the youngest sister, she came across as spoiled and the most codependent.
Now that you mention it. You are so right. That choice of having childeren should have been her's and her husband, I don't know why eva decided to get involved.
@@emixxixx3001 Isn't it insane?! Eva had no life, so she was all up in everybody else's business. And all she had to support her opinion for Kareenah and her husband to wait was statistics on marriage failure rates. Kareenah should have told Eva "Girl, bye".
Mind you, the man that played Michael is played by Dwayne Martin, Tisha Campbell's ex-husband that cheated on her, divorced her and took ALL of her money...characters are always written with the Actors personality in mind.
@@megamanxhunterwell I'm sure Jodi was rewritten since Tupac was originally supposed to play him, the whole tone of the movie would've been different considering his energy he brings to characters, not saying he can't play a mama's boy, but this is Tupac here....only so many times would he get beat on like a wimp, I'm sure Singleton wouldn't allow him to look like a joke like that Tyrese is lucky he fit the bill and the rewritten script allowed him to be wild, cuz the movie itself was
Not really as bad as Eva was to those men luckily this was a movie cuz in real life wat man would let a sister interfere in their relationships so something definitely would've been done hell a normal man probably would've cursed her out or told her to get out their home so a consequence would've happened anyway
That's the thing that bugged me about the WHOLE movie. Like why did he keep wanting to know about THEIR money. He wasn't even engaged to the sister yet.
Eva was annoying yes but what they were trying to do to her was ridiculous. And to be frank, if those men could plan something so elaborately scheming like that to get rid of Eva, there's no telling what else they would do. That's dangerous. So yea Bethany should have said hell no. And Duane Martin is basically that dude he played in the movie.
@roselynholloway7863 He was married to Tisha Campbell and they claimed bankruptcy amid their divorce after 27 years of marriage. He was accusing her of hiding money and being very abusive toward her about it. Played this role a little too well for me. :(
I like Gabrielle Union, but I wish she played a different archetype instead of the snobbish, man-stealing/dominating and rude person 🫤. She definitely is placed in a box when it comes to acting.
I think that she's been typecasted. When you play a role so good, the cast directors probably want the actors or actresses to play the same role in their movie. Also, it's probably her strongest suit to play a mean girl. The only time I didn't see her playing a mean girl was in cradle 2 the grave, think like a man, the brothers and Tyler perry good deeds. Those roles don't stand out for her. Plus she's a brown skin girl and she has attested to the fact that girls with lighter complexions got the roles that she would go for that weren't always the mean girl.

I love this movie! It’s based on The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare, and it’s just as messy and funny! You’re so right, the unmarried boyfriend was the one most invested in dissolving the Danridge fund. Like, he ain’t even entitled to a cent 😅 “Michael is straight sewage” is so right! Also, I think the reason Ray is still in the same place after he bought the house is because the landlord was selling the house, and he wanted to buy it.
Dang I thought I was they only one who knew that, she was also in another Taming of The Shrew adaptation back in 1999 starring Heath ledger but she wasn't the Shrew this time.
I had a strong dislike for this movie! Eva made me so mad and I get why the guys were pisses, but they were outta pocket for trying to get her to move away/break her heart. If I had a partner that didn’t understand that our relationship was between US ONLY, I would have to leave. We all go to other people for advice, but what Eva said was always law in her sister’s books (and that’s a no for me).
It’s because she raised them. But at the same time, I think Eva could tell they was a little shady, especially Michael. They were way to pressed about money that wasn’t even theirs to begin with. Even the one that was married to one of the sisters had no right to that money legally, because inheritance isn’t considered a marital asset
Facts she was definitely wayyyyyy to much that's why this a movie bc in real life a man would've left them sisters or had real words with Eva that would've ended the relationship anyway
Michael was a walking red flag and mastermind behind the whole scheme regarding Eva. Darrell and Tim aren't innocent either, but you can feel for them as they were indeed married and wanted to freely love and live life with their wives without Eva infiltrating. The scene where Eva and Ray are playing pool brings some humanism to Eva. You learn more about her and get a hint why she is the way she is, which comes full circle when she runs into Lucius before Ray comes up to her at the party. The sisters felt like they "owed it" to Eva, reason why they didn't challenge her when she was butting into their relationships, yet it was proven to be a form of codependency unhealthy for all involved. The sisters couldn't freely enjoy in their marriages, and Eva couldn't have a satisfying relationship of her own. Michael was just straight cringe.
All the men in the family were garbage. Tim was so desperate for a baby that he completely ignored all of the VERY LOGICAL concerns his wife had. Not to mention, babies are so hard on a marriage. He was not ready for that. He's just trying to project his daddy issues on another human Michael should be in jail or at least fired. Kidnapping /filing a false police report, and if we're being totally honest, solicitation Darrell just had no patience. His wife wanted to better herself, and ALLL he can think about is how hard it is on HIM Garbage! All of them!
It always bothered me how weak these men were. Eva would've been told to gtfo of my house. She was controlling and bitter. Let's not sugarcoat that lol. The fact that they had to pay someone to date her finally woke her up to how insufferable she was.
This is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew". That explains the musical sequence in the beginning of the film. There is another adaptation of this play called "10 Things I hate About You". Both are versions of Shakespeare's play.
I wasnt expecting this, I loved it so much!! Another Banger from our good Sis! You are completely right, Michael needs to be locked tf up because what? You're a whole cop, you make money dude. The men were so weak & needed Eva out the way, they were garbage. The Sisters were so perfect! The looks were so early 2000s cute & I lived, the bond was lovely.

I was just thinking of this movie last month and I had a thought that Eva Dandridge is a highkey autism-coded character. Many who are also black auties agreed 100%. Anyone else see this in Eva?
@@marissawilson4644 Her tendency to infodump, her being very particular when she eats food down to it's cleanliness, her refusal to be misunderstood, her strong sense of justice, hypervigilant, not very warm towards authority (her health inspector scene), occasionally condescending (the after church scene AND the end of her first date with Ray), hyper-detailed, a low-key people pleaser (she was hesitant to take the job in Chicago because it meant leaving her sisters and she actually thought of turning it down because Jacqui was mad at her leaving) and she is very routine oriented (her and her sisters' morning anthem), sarcasm queen, not to mention, she is very good with animals (her love of horses). All of these together are pretty noticeable autistic traits. Should I even bring up the part where she unapologetically interrupted her sister having sex?
Michael definitely gave dangerous crooked cop vibes that would probably end up being abusive. And furthermore it’s kinda interesting that Tisha Campbell accused him of behaving just like this character in their married when they got divorced. Duane Martin got some stuff with him. And if I’m not mistaken, didn’t the sisters’ parents pass in a car accident? So why would they even play like and do that with the whol situation of faking Ray’s death?
Hey girl hey! You pretty much said it all in this review! Yes Eva went through a lot but she also showed she was selfless and loving whilst being cut throat. So I do agree with you that she needed to be in control of something even if it meant her not giving her sisters and significant others their space. She definitely was lonely and still hurt. I agree that Ray wasn’t a bad person at all even though the plan he was involved in wasn’t the best move. What I do like about Ray is how he didn’t gaslight Eva and he took accountability for his actions. The significant others of the sisters were pathetic. They wanted Ray to bring her down while she’s up. I didn’t think any of it was planned out thoroughly because after the tears (if she had any), all she would do is lash out on them so it’ll be hell to pay anyway. And Michael proposed for the money cause ain’t no way love was involved. I thought I was the only one who thought the opening of the movie didn’t match the rest of the movie. For your list: Have you heard of the 1999 movie called Jackie’s Back? Jenifer Lewis plays a child singer turned grown diva making a comeback to the music world while a British filmmaker is doing a documentary (mockumentary) about her. It’s such a funny movie. Used to come on Lifetime. And for my guess for the next movie: Is it Romeo and Juliet???
@@forthenostalgia Yes! Jackie’s Back is hilarious! Fun Fact (slight spoiler alert): Jackie has a holiday named after her in her hometown in Kinloch, MO called Jackie Washington Day which falls on July 15th. When Jenifer Lewis got her star last year on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she got it on July 15th, lol. And I also didn’t know that Kinloch is Jenifer’s actual birthplace.
To be honest, all of the sisters’ boyfriends were trash. But Eva was the oldest of four girls, and had to raise them after their were orphaned. Eva was always going to have a significant influence in her sister’s lives whether she stayed with them or lived in Chicago, or if she was single, or if she was married. It’s only natural that you would look up to your sister as a role model. To be honest, I wouldn’t have even told my man about the Dandridge fund until we became married.
the pure disdain that you feel for Michael is felt lolllll this was a very good breakdown. I think Tim and Darryl were semi decent because at least they married the sisters but my thing is both of them are some funny lookin characters to be paired up with the fine women that they were so you know what that's about. TBH the scene where they cut that fruit has always irritated me because why was she using that little ass knife...but I digress lol.. Oh and the opening scene was my favorite....Marvin and Tammy yes please!
Since the “2000’s office siren” makeup look is trending, I think Eva’s look is a good example. Also, Mrs. Union played tf outta this role Great video ❤
Fun bit of trivia about the opening. Back in the earlier days of Hollywood back in the 50s & 60s, maybe even as early as the 40s movies would have these music video like intos before the movie would start & you'd see a person from the movie or a muse like person singing a song that relates to the subject matter of the movie. A few years earlier this same retro opening was done in the Julia Robert's movie "My Best Friend's Wedding" with a lady dressed as a bride & three other ladies dressed as her bridesmaids are singing "Wishin' & Hoping " before the story gets started. The director talked about in his commentary of this movie & said when Gabrielle Union saw it she teared up. I actually wish they would do it more these days.
Gabi just remixes her characters just a smidgen, but it's giving the same woman in different mutiverses. 😂 No shade, I love Gabi and her body of work!!🎉❤
Honey! I wasn’t into this movie when it came out & barely watched it in full. After your review, I had to watch it & my gawd! Boundaries were definitely needed, especially from Eva. Chile…. 🤦🏽♀️ Thank you for another great review! It’s always a joy to watch! ❤
Mind you the person playing Michael is Duane Martin who divorced Tisha Martin and left her with $6.00 to take care of their children so id say the casting was pretty spot on
now that I’m a little older and I see the way that relationships are going these days, I can definitely support the way these ladies were so connected to each other. We have to support each other as women more than ever.
Now as an adult, I think Eva was so involved in/ protective of her sisters lives because she probably felt like she literally sacrificed her future to secure theirs. As far as romantic relationships. 🤷🏾♀️ Just a thought. But enjoyed your final thoughts 🔥
One of my favorite comedy movies!!! I can watch Gabrielle Union's first 30 minutes every day and still laugh. Her facial expressions was hilarious, and her comments was icing on the cake!
Although Eva's brothers-in-law (minus Michael), motives were very messy, some good things happen came out of it. Also, Michael, Tim, and Darrell should have been kicked to the curb, especially both Michael and Tim.
LL cool j is so handsome! So I actually don’t think I’ve ever seen this movie, but I love seeing Miss Gabrielle playing a mean girl she plays it the best ❤
Oof, this was a whole lotta nope for me. When I was younger I did not realize how terrible the other guys were, especially Michael. I would be surprised that he faced no consequences or losing his job, but then I realize cops irl get away with actual murders, and then it all makes sense. Eva did have boundary issues, but the guys planned to manipulate her, crush her spirit, remove her from her only real support system, and then did a kidnapping and were likely cool with Ray dying. All three of the other women needed to divorce/dump them dudes, especially Bethany, RUN!
Great commentary, as usual! "Deliver Us From Eva" was always a favorite of mine (and I love me some LL Cool J! He was so sexy in this movie). As much as I love and have watched this film, you pointed out some things that I never thought about (i.e.: the fellas should be in jail for kidnapping and Mike should be out of a job; Eva would probably just move back to LA if LL dumped her in Chicago, etc.). As for the fellas, I've said it once, and I'll say it again, there's two things that always irked me about them and the movie: Mike was too damn interested in the Dandridge fund (even more so than the actual husbands), and the men never apologized for their foolishness, despite the fact that Eva apologized to them for meddling in their relationships. Just triflin'. Thanks for the upload!
Yes! Thank-you as always. I didn't care for this 🍿🎥, but your reviews are always so entertaining. Gabbie is playing herself as usual 😂 , or same type of character should I say 😅
I can understand the surface level of this movie. But when broken down, Eva has had to bear so much for the sake of her family. She just wants the best for everyone she cares about. She’s toxic AF, but I can understand why.
Good review, I was never really interested in seeing this movie, but you’re analysis makes me want to go watch it. Also, I would love to see your commentary on Romeo must Die. I think your POV on Trish’s and Han’s relationship will be interesting since it was hinted to be romantic, but it just came off like a big brother, lil sister relationship. Again, good video!
I truly have a meh feeling about this movie. The only thing I can see is I love the early 2000 women look. Can we just appreciate a time when women just look beautiful and not ridiculous? Anyways Eva was a mess and I can understand why the men hated her. I agree wanting her to get her heartbroken is a bit to far. But she was pushing them to the limit. Overall it’s not a horrible movie but it’s not one of the classic from that time.
I was not looking foward to doing this review because I felt the same way about this movie. Its ok but not something I enjoyed enough to watch again. But the 2000s hair and makeup girls were giving...per usual
That actress Bethany also was in that series with her as well. She was the wife of omari Hendricks that Gabbie was having an affair with in the show. Came on BET.
I looooooved this movie as a kid!!!!! I watched it alllllll the time and could quote each scene line for line and still can it was that damn bad!!!! 😂😂😂😂 Can’t believe it’s 20 years old now!!!!! I was literally 12 when it came out lol
I had no idea that from watching this movie, Michael was a fool for trying to be so involved in the sisters money when it wasn’t his business. Eva was annoying at times but still funny. Gabrielle union was that actress starring in every romantic comedy in the early 2000s. LL Cool J was a great actor and one of my favorite rappers alive too.
Naaaah I'm not having this BS. This is a story of learning to let go. Eva was the eldest and practically their mum...but just as parents, Eva needed to learn to let go and let her sisters live their own lives. Same goes for the sisters. You have a man now, so respect the relationship and stand behind him like you mean it. If you can't be a team with your partner, you shouldn't be together and go live your single life. As for the men: all of them were trash except for Tim and Daryl, who clearly wanted more from the relationship than their partner were willing to give them.

Agreed
To be fair. Eva just gave her a statistic...a very real statistic with real world consequences.

@@megamanxhunterwell I'm sure Jodi was rewritten since Tupac was originally supposed to play him, the whole tone of the movie would've been different considering his energy he brings to characters, not saying he can't play a mama's boy, but this is Tupac here....only so many times would he get beat on like a wimp, I'm sure Singleton wouldn't allow him to look like a joke like that

You can't interrupt your sibling tryna get their lil freak on and not have some type of consequences coming 🤣🤣😭😭😭
Not really as bad as Eva was to those men luckily this was a movie cuz in real life wat man would let a sister interfere in their relationships so something definitely would've been done hell a normal man probably would've cursed her out or told her to get out their home so a consequence would've happened anyway
Nah just proves that they knew their sister was over stepping
It is
That's the thing that bugged me about the WHOLE movie. Like why did he keep wanting to know about THEIR money. He wasn't even engaged to the sister yet.
I'm not sure why this wasn't a red flag to her.

Yea, I didnt realize that at first about Rays place and Michael irked my soul 😂
Dang I thought I was they only one who knew that, she was also in another Taming of The Shrew adaptation back in 1999 starring Heath ledger but she wasn't the Shrew this time.
@@blackpoptart4781Are you talking about “10 things I hate about you?”
Michael was the worst character. 🤷🏽♀️I never got the feeling that he loved Bethany.
Michael shouldn’t even know about the fund. He too nosey. Oh I loved that kitchen scene lol.
I agree, Bethany shouldn't have even told him about the money. And when he kept asking her about it, she should have dumped him.
That’s what I was thinking.
Michael was shady af and he was a cop. He definitely should not have had a job at the end and should've been locked up.😂😂
Don’t forget this was a coming to age adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. Definitely a comfort movie for me now 😆

@@deonnadyson Yup. She’s hinted at it more than once

Me too
All the men in the family were garbage.
Tim was so desperate for a baby that he completely ignored all of the VERY LOGICAL concerns his wife had. Not to mention, babies are so hard on a marriage. He was not ready for that. He's just trying to project his daddy issues on another human
Michael should be in jail or at least fired. Kidnapping /filing a false police report, and if we're being totally honest, solicitation
Darrell just had no patience. His wife wanted to better herself, and ALLL he can think about is how hard it is on HIM
Garbage! All of them!
It always bothered me how weak these men were. Eva would've been told to gtfo of my house. She was controlling and bitter. Let's not sugarcoat that lol. The fact that they had to pay someone to date her finally woke her up to how insufferable she was.
I agree with you!!!!! Like who walks in on folks having sex? She'd been cussed out PASS THE DIRT!!!!!
This is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew". That explains the musical sequence in the beginning of the film. There is another adaptation of this play called "10 Things I hate About You". Both are versions of Shakespeare's play.
Coincidentally, Gabrielle Union is in both films.
I wasnt expecting this, I loved it so much!! Another Banger from our good Sis!

I was just thinking of this movie last month and I had a thought that Eva Dandridge is a highkey autism-coded character. Many who are also black auties agreed 100%. Anyone else see this in Eva?
Why do you think that?
YES
Michael definitely gave dangerous crooked cop vibes that would probably end up being abusive. And furthermore it’s kinda interesting that Tisha Campbell accused him of behaving just like this character in their married when they got divorced. Duane Martin got some stuff with him. And if I’m not mistaken, didn’t the sisters’ parents pass in a car accident? So why would they even play like and do that with the whol situation of faking Ray’s death?
Babyyyy when she punched LL. Chile I jumped.
Ive heard of Jackies back but never saw it before. I gotta check it out. And the next review is the movie Fear.
Also, Mrs. Union played tf outta this role
Great video ❤

This movie is kinda similar to a thin line between love and hate especially with the main character
All of the sisters were heavily codependent.

I’m sorry but i loved Eva’s character. She is straight up and honest, she maybe firm and controlling but at least isn’t delusional and a push over. 😂

I had no idea that from watching this movie, Michael was a fool for trying to be so involved in the sisters money when it wasn’t his business. Eva was annoying at times but still funny.
