    Great work, I love this series! Two little things in animation threw me off - the fact that tank tracks are sliding on the ground and how sharply the ship changed movement.

    The CGI looks great.
    I saw in one of corridor digitals videos where they had a professional compositor use Nuke to post-process the renders of Star Wars scenes they recreated with CGI.
    I reckon some equivalent post-processing on your eight shots is what would have made them indistinguishable from the originals.

    Can you imagine if someone from 1984 could see this? I mean back in the day it probably took them like a few months to create this opening sequence. And everything was practical effects. If you told someone from the production team that you can recreate this entire scene in a week digitally they'd probably think you're crazy. And it's actually really crazy how far technology has gone.

    Nicely done 👍
    If you revisit I would suggest adding a bit of film grain to all the shots.
    For the tank in the background I would have used a slight noise on the rotation rather than position.
    The only jarring bit was the tank treads not moving at the correct speed.
    ...and the linear movement on the jet (which also looked bad in the original)

    I REALLY love this concept and I'm totally stealing it. I've always wanted to make a short film and have several ideas floating around but it can be hard to get started. Recreating shots or small scenes from the big boys of the past is totally doable and a great stepping stone to working on my own production. I've always wanted to recreate and at least render in HD all of the CGI shots from Babylon 5 because they are so low res on the dvd's.

    At 13:30, it wouldn't just be bobbing up and down linearly, it'll be more slightly shifting back and forward and side to side, as it has to climb over everything as it goes. Bear in mind how suspension systems and the sheer weight of the machine crushing softer obstacles would factor in, too. Having it go straight forward actually would've been more realistic, as i wouldn't expect much to stand in its way and it's more believable than it bobbing up and down on the spot. Can just take a look at videos of modern tanks and IFV's in real life, how they move over the terrain. You could almost animate it like a boat and it'd be in the ballpark.

    Absolutely blown away by this - as I generally am with your content - but these last two videos you’re really elevating yourself to a whole new level. Already watched this through twice all the way as there are literally dozens of excellent tips & tricks throughout👏👏👏
    I’ve seen a few other comments referring to the skating tracks issue - & I’m also wondering, of all the things you’ve achieved so brilliantly in this video, that actually seems like quite an easy fix, even if it was just eyeballing the key frames to set the speed (rather than any unnecessarily clever physics simulation); was it basically just a question of rendering it out & then just deciding you had too much else to do to go back & re-render? What was your thought process on why you left that shot as it was..?
    Absolutely NOT a criticism of any kind - I think your work - & your channel - is incredible, just interested in your perspective on that..?
    Amazing as always.

    • @DECODEDVFX
      @DECODEDVFX  3 года назад +1

      Thank you.
      I made the track animation without the floor in place. My main concern was to get the track speed aligned with the rotation of the wheels. Floor slipping wasn't something that even occurred to me since there was no floor at the time.
      By the time the floor was in place my viewport performance was terrible (I later discovered that I'd accidentally added a triangulate modifier to my track mesh, which reduced playback speed to 5 fps). It's very hard to spot animation errors when you're viewing one frame at a time.
      So I didn't even know the tracks were slipping until I put the whole project together in After Effects. By this point I was right up to the deadline and I had several far more pressing issues to fix. For a start, the framerate of some shots was completely wrong, so the whole video was misaligned with the original audio track. I lost half a day re-rendering those shots which killed any chance of having enough time to fix the wheels.

    • @KaiserSaucy
      @KaiserSaucy 3 года назад +1

      @@DECODEDVFX thanks for the thorough reply. I did wonder if it might have had something to do with playback issues - I completely agree, it’s often very difficult to tell what’s going on if the processor can’t keep up.

    This was fun, really cool stuff and you can learn some tricks for making your own cinematic recreations.
    I will now really squeeze out some nit picks. The tracks turn too slow, the explosion of the soldier the smoke only renders as black, the lights on the ship need more falloff, would work better is the tank rotated than up and down, adding depth of field to the camera would have given it more reality. It's really great.

    very good animation, only 2 criticisms, at 0:23, the ship makes a very abrupt movement, perhaps making a smoother transition in that part would look better, and the other criticism, at 0:28, the speed of the tracks ( wheels) does not match the speed at which the tank is approaching, it is like "skating"

  • @Fafhrd42

    Real talk, CGI "throwtogether" scenes like this do not look any worse than the 80's SFX counterparts, and, as a matter of fact, this is actually on par with some early 90s sfx to be fair. And you did the whole thing in a week. By yourself. NO team. Granted, some pre-fabbed models were used, but even BIG studios do that, so that's totally acceptable. All in all, it comes down to how good is your workflow, and how good is your workstation, and how well do you know the limitations of your software. You check all those boxes, followed your reference, end result good. If you had just ONE MORE WEEK, it would likely be on par with modern cinematics.

  • @Lad11971
    @Lad11971 2 года назад

    I think you should focus on your materials more. Even if you have epic lighting. materials are what ground a scene/animation in reality. I know you have limited time to focus on this but most of the objects look like a they have minimal to no roughness breakup and more or less just have a principled shader applied with no textures. Not trying to hate just trying to help:) looks great tho!

    • @DECODEDVFX
      @DECODEDVFX  2 года назад

      That's probably down to the aggressive denoising. It tends to sap roughness details out of every mesh, especially when you have a lot of volumetrics in the scene.

    Love what you are doing with these scene recreations. Computers and awesome programs are letting nerdy old dudes (and some girls maybe?) to live out fantasies of being in charge of big movies...or even to kinda build their own simulation and get INSIDE them.
    Oddly, in your behind the scenes parts of your video where you show how you rigged the tank the track appears to move correctly. But in your rendered close up it is obviously skating over the skull terrain. Does Traffiq not have a rigging doodad that makes wheels roll on the ground AND displace with terrain? I get that you limited your time (although why you did is unclear to me) but it seems you could have just taken about 25% longer and some bits would have looked even more awesome. I know you may wanna move on but I would love to see a Ver. 2.0 of the sequence. More samples higher numbers of passes, fix the odd aircraft flying jumpy bit, more smoke, some flares and further filters, some depth-of-field emphasizing foreground blurry bits and smoke layers, more film-grainy and contrasty colour grading, more smoke, and maybe more volumetric fog detail (plus smoke!). I think you could end up with a little effort with a sequence that is convincingly BETTER than some of the janky original shots (from the movie not your own video). I think many of us would also love to see the comparison thing too. How much could you improve it if you gave yourself another 30% time budget and the knowledge you have now after a couple of these videos recreations. Recreate your OWN thing...but let us see how it can be upgraded.
    The beauty of these projects to me is, unlike with an ACTUAL film shoot (something I have personally been on for over 30 yrs now) you can keep ALL the bits on your hard drive and just keep making versions with all the acquired assets. Actors and big studio spaces all just tucked into your magic dual 3090 box. Please keep up these great projects they are very inspiring to newbies to the Blender world like me.

    I loved this recreation. You could tell you were on a tight time budget, but it still got most of the spirit of the original. The only quibble I had was with the part at 16:40 or so where you made the tank bounce as if going over rough terrain. When I watched this sequence, it looked to me more like the tank was taking a stroll and the bounce was more like footfalls. Maybe if you could have turned down the amplitude of the bounce, it would have been more in line with your intent to me. Maybe I focused on that too much, but it broke the immersion as soon as I saw it. (if you ever look at real tank footage, the suspension of these things makes tanks traveling over rough terrain look more like they're floating than bouncing roughly, case in point: ruclips.net/video/31kaGFETQv8/видео.html at 8:15). Other than that minor constructive criticism, I thought it did the original a good bit of justice. Bravo!

      Ok, wow, looking at original footage at around 1:36 of your video, the model Cameron used looked like a toy driving over a bed of gravel, even more janky than yours. I now retract the previous post. You nailed it! :-)

      Thanks. I tried to stick to the source footage for this one as much as possible, even when the original looked a bit janky.

    outstanding, my favorite move (T2 anyway). How do you set the extrapolation to cyclic? what view do you set that in? ruclips.net/video/Rk3ETKsIdSc/видео.html thank you

      Just hover over the timeline and press shift+E. Linear extrapolation will continue the action of the last set of keyframes on the timeline. So if you have a 30 degree rotation over 100 frames it will continue to rotate in the same direction at that speed forever.

      It is obvious without rendering, why didn't you fix it?
