In the latest installment of “Riff Lords,” Claudio Sanchez, prog-rock guitarist and lead storyteller of Coheed and Cambria gives us a bend-by-bend, note-by-note breakdown of the special sauce in songs like “The Dark Sentencer,” “No World for Tomorrow,” “Welcome Home,” and more.
Claudio is, among other things, a hardcore sci-fi fan, comic book author, father, and oh, yeah, the lead singer/guitarist for prog-rock innovators Coheed and Cambria.
From the jump, Claudio Sanchez has been all about narrative and concept in his approach to music. Coheed and Cambria have created a broad sprawling narrative that’s insanely inventive and commercially risky, but Claudio wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s that and the fact that while some fans go all-in on the episodic nature of the sci-fi/fantasy-inspired music, others enjoy the music independent of the story arc because the subject matter is still relatable and comes from an authentic place.
As for Claudio’s playing well, he admits that he hates voids and loves to fill them with big symphonic sounds created with vibrato, pinch harmonics, and bends that, in his words, make the guitar scream. Claudio is, at his core, a storyteller, so whether he’s doing it with a pen or his Explorer, fans are always taken on a fantastical journey. Enjoy the ride!

Dude it's SO CRAZY. I can play like, Goodnight Fair Lady or Lucky Stars and sing it at the same time and if I really really hammered Mother Superior I could get there but then you get into dark sentencer or NWFT and it just doesn't even make any sense anymore. Some of the riffs are so jagged and you've got little pauses and runs to work in while the vocal rhythm changes every time around, AND he's doing character singing and hugely dynamic lines.
Not to even mention Gravity's Union, where he plays an 8 string all over the place. He's my hero

They are nothing like what I expected, which makes it even better. In my mind palace I was hearing power metal guitar exchanges with two guys singing in a rock style kinda like the Sword. When I started the first song, "Welcome Home", I had to adjust my mind palace Equalizer, but was thoroughly pleased with reality's version of the bands musicianship. The rabbit hole needs no exit.🧑‍🎤
I've been pretty much bed ridden for the last week from a respiratory infection so bad I can't even growl in key. So my hearholes have been extra busy. I've physically absorbed The Pretty Reckless, licked the edges of bolt thrower and started kickin' it with Coheed and Cambria. I'm glad I got sick.

I had thought the same but as it turned out I had heard A Favor House Atlantic back in the day. While I liked it enough I never pursued Coheed further until a month ago when I saw the Welcome Home video from the Guitar Center Sessions. ruclips.net/video/1e5zfA5UvYo/видео.html
      - Behold as double neck antics ensue.... ;-) -
I cranked it and watched it 18 times in 2 days before moving on to other songs. Needless to say I was blown away and have been catching up on all things Coheed and Claudio to get up to speed and make up for lost time. At this point I feed on this material day and night, sleep is secondary.
In many ways I feel that I have missed out all these years but there is such a wealth of a back catalogue from the band and comic book lore to dive into it has been a true blessing. Better late than never, I have stumbled across a brilliantly skilled and humble savant who defines what it means to be an artist.
The entire band is simply incredible and Claudio is easily one of the very best frontmen of all time.
      Period.

I've played guitar for most of my life and love rock and heavy music. Surprisingly my son turned me on to Coheed and we have since traveled all over to see them live whenever we can. One of the most energetic and tight bands live. How he sings and pulls off these riffs while jumping around is crazy. We've met them several times and they are so down to earth and truly appreciate their fans. Thanks so much for this lesson. Please do a Claudio and Travis signature guitar series.

Here's how it went down... scrolling the good ol' YT suggestions and notice the Gibson logo, read title to video while simultaneously insta clicking on it and Im watching the vocalist/guitarist from arguably one of the most musically talented artists of his generation. Coheed was definitely one of those bands that my buddies either loved or hated. Their unique sound combined with that luxurious perm made them very easy to recognize them immediately during a time when the genre was flooded with so many bands that sounded, and looked the same. His talent on guitar, choice of lyrics, and one of a kind high pitched vocals made them who they were, and always have been. An extremely awesome band. 🤟

Claudio’s riffs bring on that nostalgic, heard it before-type feeling. When you hear a new riff on a new record it feels like a time machine using 10 atom bombs as propulsion. Your hair rises, goosebumps all over, excess amounts of baby batter in your pants. God bless Claudio.

Claudio always inspires me to grab my explorer and get better. Outstanding riffage, but so much more than that. Coheed music is so dynamic and has seamless transitions. They'll be at a melodic whisper and BAM you're into a hookey chorus...oh wait now they're melting your face. I'm constantly asking myself 'how did they get us here in the song so perfectly?' Musical genius.
