There arent a lot of bands that have created their own style of playing but id say mark and willie have done that. Strip away everything else except those 2 riffing and you immediately know its them. Amazing talent and synchopation between these 2. Not to mention mark seems like a genuinely good person. Congrats on your success mark and your sobriety.
@bradbutler That would be said about like 99% of metal, a note is a note, really doesn't make a massive difference what string its on, but if thats what your worried about then why don't you give the passing/in your words a try... or the song's ashes of the wake, king me, another nail for your coffin has a pretty melodic outro too, or grace
Pathetic is one of the most badass riffs of all time in my opinion. Requires a lot of hand eye coordination and a lot of really fast pull offs, but all the while it just sounds so fluid and powerful.
I had a lesson w mark back in 2012. Really stellar dude, I paid for an hour but he chatted with me for like 3 lol talked all things music life composing. Great guy.
@@thetej1098Have pacifica with black winter and schecter c6 fr and those sound way different and both strats but different necks and mics and wood and the difference is huge but both still sound great
As a guitar nerd : short scale guitar (24.75 inches) and the Mesa Boogie "au naturel", without any kind of boost in front. That's what makes it sound so thick and clear.
This dude and his band are the reason I haven’t put my guitar down in 17 years.. I’ve learned probably 60-70% of their entire discography I just can’t get enough of it. That second riff in Now you’ve got something to die for is beautifully chaotic and seriously the most fun riff I’ve ever learned to play in any metal song. Thank you Mark for taking the time to show us these riffs! Watching this makes me realising I’ve been playing some of it 99% right with the odd note wrong here and there all these years later 😂 truly musical geniuses these guys are!
Wow, I'm a 70 YO classically trained pianist but listen to liquid metal on Sirius when I'm driving.Somehow, it relaxes me. This video was terrific and you are obviously a master at what you love and a great teacher!Thank you.👏🎸🎹
Probably because as a classically trained musician, modern metal is very close to what you are familiar with.. they are very similar in their chord progressions and voicings. Pull up some Beethoven or Bach and throw some distortion over it and you'll see what I mean.. maybe speed it up a notch or 2.. throw in a growl... Boom.
Mark and Willie are two of the most bad ass riff masters of the past 20 years. Like Hetfield and Hammett, Skolnick and Peterson, Murray and Smith before them, they have churned out some of the most memorable metal songs. Hope they keep at it for another 20.
I wasn’t planning on a late night practice session but I couldn’t resist grabbing my guitar when I hit play on this one. Thank you Mark and Gibson! Learned a ton here, including how much fun drop D is.
I've been a Lamb of God fan for a very long time and I'm so glad that Mark is getting the attention that he deserves. We didn't even touch on his solos which are amazing as well. Great video and great idea to ad Mark as a Gibson artist. Love it! 🤘
Watching another great video from Gibson/Mesa Boogie team on the over night shift wishing i could buy up Marks guitar setup on this video and try my hand at these riffs. 💰🎸🤘🏻
Seeing these guys live is incredible, Their musicianship is as tight as it gets, Mark's playing is crazy good, Paired with Willie it just gets that much better! This is good stuff!
"Lies of Autumn" has some perfect beginner stuff as well! "One Gun" also has a straight forward riff that isn't too difficult, if you're feeling frisky lol
Thanks Mark, 30+ year player and always looking to help writing killer riffs. Videos like these help me to not steal riffs but maybe branch out on some riffs I have. Love your band and content. Keep Rocking my friend!!
Don't know much about the band and the musicians but Mark seems like a real cool guy. Thanks for posting this and letting him explain his magic. And I'll be dreaming about that Les Paul this night for sure 🤩🤩🤩
I can’t express how much I fucking love lamb of god! The drumming, amazing riffs, great vocals and one of the tightest bands I’ve ever heard live. Seen them atleast 12 times. And will continue seeing them every time they stop by 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Would love to see some Epiphone Mark sigs, I understand we’ll probably see a Gibson version first but regardless glad to see him part of the Gibson family.
Great Guitarist!! Really Cool He Mentioned Testament as A Influence. There is A Song Off The Gathering Album That Sounds Like A Lamb of God... Tho the Style was Before Lamb Of God! 🤘
Always loved mark and willie. Have spent many hours upon hours honing my chops with their song “ omertà” which to me just oozes and exudes the tight, heavy and syncopated galloping , sometimes odd metered riffs and runs these two have perfected. They just work together. Someone here said if you strip everything away , and leave mark and willie , it’s still easily recognizable, and I agree. Not to take ANYTHING away from anyone else in their band at all. They all have their contributions and have given endlessly to please us, the fans and consumers. Lastly…. I’ve always known mark and willie as Jackson and esp guys. Has mark made the move over to Gibson ?? Hope you all have a great day and learn as much as I did here bc I’ve always looked at these tabs and said to myself “ yeah… that’s intricate… I love it … but I will learn it later bc I’m not ready for this” lol. Just being honest. The way they sound is arguably just as intricate as they way they play. It ain’t easy!! Thanks!!
Mark seems like such a damn good, cool dude for real and i have always loved his playing and tone🤘 Ive seen these guys a few times and seriously f**kin' killed it everytime! Absolutely a Riff Lord🤘

As a 11 y/o kid back then, LOG was the band that made me a 100% metalhead as I grew older and will remain such until I die. Absolutely just got shocked and awed the first time I heard their album New American Gospel. Right then and there, I was hooked and felt what such awesome dimension metal music takes you to. Since then, most people never understood why my mp3 player playlist was what it was. Only I and my metalhead friends connected. 😊

@@MJ-nk7mp that's awesome and really gives me hope! It's such a cool riff and I borrow pieces of it all the time in my playing. Thanks for the encouragement!
Once again, phenomenal content. I have seen all the Riff Lords episodes and they are all great. Is it just me or did this episode seem to fly by? Wow, what was clearly a 40 minute video felt like it only lasted 10 minutes tops. I think Gibson should make a one time exception to the format and have Mark back for a two hour episode so it would at the very least seem like we got 20 minutes of guitar destroying bliss. Anyone agree?
Love LOG. They came out when the "New Wave of American Metal" started appearing in the early 2000s. While a bunch of bands have disappeared or fallen behind, they're part of a handful of bands like Mastodon, Devildriver, Gojira, etc that have thrived and pushed the genre farther. Definitely created their own sound and style which is extremely difficult in metal. Just because the genre is saturated with bands that all share some similarities with eachother. Hearing Mark and Willie progress as players has been great too. Mark has become an really tasteful lead player too... He's very bluesy over top of these stiff staccato rhythms and it just fits. Their rhythm work though is so addictive to listen to. Great pick for this Riff Lords episode. Would be cool to get Willie to come show his choices on here too. Bill or Brent from Mastodon would be some killer content also... keep up the Riff Lord series Gibson. I've watched and learned something from every episode. Thank you guys.
Nice! Thank you. Was practicing some tool so I'm in drop D octave world. I bought my first real LP a few months ago. A 22' TradV in translucent ebony, love it. Even though it is showing fairly aggressive fret wear already...

It’s true. I’ve seen posts from folks asking for bands that are similar and there really isn’t anybody.
Don't leave out chris. Wish he was back in the band
you mean their play everything on one string style? it is unique i guess.

They have unreal chemistry. I always think back to the outro to One Gun, where they bounce back and forth off each other.
Mark is such a chill guy. Like he'd be 100% down to sit on his porch and drink sweet tea with you and talk guitar.
He’d prolly wanna talk muscle cars lol

The clarity in his tone is always so good. That LP/Mesa Boogie combo is sweet
people who even in 2023 still believe an LP or any other guitar on its own has any contribution to "tone" are irredeemable

Consistently some of the hardest riffs to play. They're so tight and precise

Such a good artist to sponsor. Been a lamb of god fan since early 2000s
Full speed, the riffs are brutal, slowed down for demonstration purposes they still absolutely slay.
