Came over from the Sundae Driver. My 2015 Silverado antenna just started leaking and it was pretty bad. My windshield was covered in condensation so bad I could sheet water off it. I took my truck out and drove up an incline and about a 1/4 a cup of water dumped out of the sunglasses roof console... Every turn I made more spilled out and I noticed the water stains at the door pillars and around the sunglasses console. So pissed right now. Thanks for this how to video gonna temporarily seal it off with some calk and tear it apart this weekend.

I’ve got the sunroof and 3rd brake light, so I think I’ll clean those up too.
This is a great video. I appreciate you taking the time to make it. Found water in my driver's floorboard last weekend. Pretty sure the water is coming from the cabin pressure vents but will definitely be doing your preventative maintenance tip.

GM will not admit their design failure or cover the cost to repair the leaking roof.
They technically did because there's a documented technical service buliten on it. It should be listed in the video description.
I am a GM fan but this is true for them on other parts too. Not exclusive to GM I would imagine. I had an 08' Tahoe and I replaced the throttle position sensor (gas peddle) 3x while i owned it (miles 145k-180k). The lifetime warranty was weak and I had to pay $100 every time. sold it!

Good job Anthony... Excellent fix...The only thing I would have different is I would have only applied the dielectric grease to the grounding clips. The rest of the underside, I would gouped it up with the clear silicon glue. That Shark Fin antenna is poorly contoured match to that roof thus it needs all help possible. The Fin should never need replacement unless for freak physical damage.

I did it so you can remove it. That what we do for the police vehicle because we never know if we have to remove it.
It's also based on a tip you gave for the cab lights on the Ram, you suggested greasing the whole rubber gasket because silicon may break apart. I'm pretty sure it was your suggestion.
@@AnthonyJ350 I must of misunderstood, I thought that was a standard OEM AM/FM antenna which should be good for life. Yes an aftermarket police radio antenna may change during the life of the vehicle thus a "Permanent" solution would not wise.
@@stealthg35infiniti94 It's the Onstar and GPS. Problem we have is they'll drive the vehicles into parkades and smash the antennas because they don't pay attention to clearance height. So this method makes it an easier swap.

Excellent, what were you spraying on paper towel to remove silicone at the end?
Was using Wurth brake cleaner.
There has been a lot of water leaking into the truck, should I try to dry the electrical or should I just go ahead and replace/caulk the new antenna?
Dry it out, clean the connectors and put a little dielectric grease in the plugs. Then proceed to do the fix.
Consider using clear spray conformal coating on the boards (both sides).

I don't think it would work well through paint. It seems to work fine with wax though. We had full reception after. I'm not a fan of the design, but I'm also not a fan of rust.

Exactly my question. How does it transmit through paint? I had to remove mine due to poor install by guy #2. It didn't leak but did work. He had a ton of sealant everywhere and it was still rusty inside and had black sealant on those two sets of contacts. One was not even touching paint and came off when I removed the antennae. These are held on with glue, not soldered or tack welded. So, I checked the continuity. The metal base of the antennae is conductive and so is the tab. The tab is also conductive to the metal frame but it's a weak grounding point. The SAT Radio worked just fine with it plugged to the green connector and NOT installed on the truck. The SAT radio did not work when unplugged from the connector. The radio appears to work with or without being plugged into the RED connector. My conclusion from testing, these tabs are NOT contacts which conduct a ground to metal but rather a spring or other mounting device. I'm just going to clean mine up and reinstall.
Also very common issue for the 5th gen rams, the shark fin antenna leaks causing stains in the headliner

Good tips! Mine, on my 2018, doesn't leak and I'm just hesitant to mess with it. Are these sort of the same design as the ones used in 2006? The one on my 2006 GMC Yukon has never leaked.....yet.
I'm not 100% sure. The problem seems to be more common older ones. The only down side is if it happens to your truck out of warranty you potentially have to put in a BCM.

I have an '06 still, has sat outside its whole life, the thing has yet to leak. I also have a '16, antenna leaked and co pletely broke at just 5 years old. I wouldn't touch the older generation one. They seem to be built right.
I have rust spots in the same areas you mentioned, I can see water leaking from under the dash area. Replaced the antenna, sealed it all up and still leaking. 🤦🏼♂️
Sealed it like we did in the video? Is the sheet metal deformed?
Was the windshield replaced?
@@AnthonyJ350 Yes it was sealed just as the video shows. I never had any water spots in the headliner or A Pillar prior but I did have the spots your mentioned in the video so that’s why I went with that first. The Windshield has not been replaced.

@@AnthonyJ350 Yessir, had a hard rain yesterday and it’s dripping underneath the dash around the E-brake area & then onto the floor mat.
What is the name of silicon you used, and what were you using to clean of excess silicone. Thank you!
I used Wurth silicone and sprayed brake cleaner on to a shop towel to clean the excess.
One would think GM just started making trucks a few years ago with all these issues. These are "teething" issues that shouldnt be a problem on a truck brand over 100 years old. They know theyre making junk, its theyre plan to keep people buying new. When i buy a new truck after these problems, it wont be another chevy.
It is a shame how these little things affect durability and owner satisfaction in a big way.

I don't have this specific issue but I do have rust on the frame where you pointed out. Found out today because the truck won't start. Or it does start and then shuts off after a few seconds. Going to let it dry for a day or so and see if that will fix it. Any clues on what got wet and is not allowing it to start? Radio is cooked i believe

Definitely dry out the interior with a fan and check all the fuses.
Is that only for Onstar or does it also contain the temperature sensor for the dash readout ? (outside temp)
I think the temp sensor is somewhere near the grille.
What spray did you use to remove the excess silicon sealant? I’ve always used a paper towel but if the spray is more effective, I’d like to know. Tks for the video.

Will this complete seal not cause condensation?
It's the only solution we found that works. We've had vehicles repaired at the dealership have water intrusion again.
I have a 2020 2500 and found water dripping around the rear window, and a water stain on the headliner. Would this the first place you would look?
I would look at the 3rd Brake Light first, the the shark fin.
Would it be easier to just a new shark fin and replace it ??
If you know the new one has a revised design and addresses these issues yes.
But if you don't know, it's more of a gamble.

Id weld a piece of sheet metal on that square on the roof and delete the xm antenna if i could. I think its stupid that it was standard on all vehicles after they started putting bluetooth in radios. I have never paid for xm radio nor will i ever, could care less for it
It also does your Onstar feature, and most new vehicles have network capability so the manufacturers can pull data off of them and force software updates.
I'm with you, but this is the trend.
@@AnthonyJ350 makes sence all of that goes through that antenna too. But I'd still remove it. I prefer that onstar and the government not knowing where I'm at and what my driving habits are.
I have a 2018 Yukon. It pour yesterday and then cleared up. I went out to my car a couple hours after the rain and noticed a puddle of water on my driver side floor mat. Is there where water was pooling for you? I looked up underneath by the petals and couldn’t put my finger on where it was leaking.
Do you have a sunroof?
That rubber seal stuff retro rubber or butyl?
It's more of a butyl it seems.

@@chrispohl7185 Just make sure you push down on the shark fin to help it compress so you don't stress out the threads in the antenna.
I got leak stains. How so i kno if if the antena or 3rd brake light?
Are the stains in the front of the headliner or the back?

My fin is in the back of my 2017 gmc terrain... pretty sure the seal is broken from a car wash! No one seems to be able to give me a 100% answer and not sure where to take it to get fixed... every place I go to so far seems clueless. HELP!

Would this leaking cause water to pour into the rear (2nd row) dvd/dome lights and leak onto the floor? Everytime it rains water just pours into that area and gets the backseat floor soaked. I’ve checked the sunroof drains. Don’t seem to be clogged. I have searched and searched and can’t find any videos or anyone else having this issue. (07 Tahoe)
It's possible. You would have to drop the liner partially, pour water and check the antenna and the sun roof drains.
If you don't have a sunroof try this fix without dropping the liner.

I do have the sunroof and the drain is working properly so I’m leaning more towards this, just can’t find any info on this or sunroof causing it to leak in the dvd/dome light area …. Not sure how to take the headliner down. As a woman, these videos are a little scary because I feel like most are geared towards men who know the basics of cars and trucks. Great video though! Thanks for the help!
@@stephk3767 You're welcome. You can bring the vehicle to a local trusted install shop or body shop and show them this video and ask them to replicate the work.

My ‘21 Escalade is leaking inside the car after the first month
It's probably a very similar design to this. Make sure the dealer addresses the antenna this way. They might just put silicon under the antenna and you'll have the same issue.
My ‘10 also leaked and the dealer claims they can’t fix it

What a stupid design every time I wash my truck I bump that thing loose, musta glued it down 20 times
That's not good at all if you can knock it loose. It's bolted in. I would replace it, the threads must be damaged.

There is a recall on this going on, you don't need to do any of this: static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10137374-9999.pdf your dealer will replace/fix at no charge.
Orrr you can do it how we did in the video which probably seals it better.
This recall shows 2015-18. Why would my 2014 Sierra be left out? Definitely have a leak coming from the antenna.
@@redcodefsu 2014 is a cross over year. So production may be 2014 but the truck is technically a 2015. Let us know if it works for you.
