Had my UDR for a whole 5 days before returning it. It was so loud in use, louder than my NAS and UPS - plus the performance was terrible compared to my old setup (USG 3P, NanoHD, synology docker controller)
My new ISP standard router was already performing way better than my NanoHD, so I thought the UDR would be a solid upgrade. Now I’m just using my ISP router until I figure out which ubiquiti road I will go
I'm faced, rather unexpectedly, with replacing my troublesome Linksys Velop mesh system. Having purchased it only three years ago I'm extremely sensitive to the life expectancy for my new system. I'm keen to switch to a UniFi system and I think that the UDR is probably the right starter kit for me. It has the most up to date radios and the ability to power a couple of remote APs without any additional hardware. At first I was considering jumping whole hog into a UDM Pro SE and a big PoE switch and multiple APs but the sticker shock (not to mention that everything is out of stock anyway) brought me back to reality. The really trick it seems will be to actually find a UDR for sale now.
Most likely they were able to produce the UDR with an improved feature set at lower cost by switching out the components. I like the UDR better due to that (lower cost, 2 POEs). Perfect piece of kit for a simple home setup with perhaps 2 additional APs or an AP and a doorbell or something. Underpowered for much more. Price is better but still higher than it needs to be if they really want to blow away the market; That said, as availability is way lower than demand for pretty much all their stuff, hard to blame them I guess.
The security feature set are different between the two, so that is a difference.
Got a UDM for our cabin, but a UDR would have been a better choice... a PoE port or two is exactly what I'm missing on the UDM. The weaker CPU + more storage on the UDR seems a bit of a weird direction; yes, it can now support other apps, but is underpowered on the CPU side... the IDS/IPS throughput isn't an issue for me as my UDM hangs off a 4G router anyway, but it does seem a bit like Ubiquiti should have thought things through a bit better and swapped the price and CPU between the UDM and UDR (and probably the name as well).

I don't really understand the pricing and the CPU performance. How can the price be so much lower on the UDR?
How can the UDR support more features and the same throughput when it has a slower CPU?
I have UDM now but I am going to move this fall and I am interested in both PoE and Protect, but I am worried about the CPU performance on the UDR. I don't think I motivate getting a rack for my network stuff. What would you recommend? Selling the UDM and buy stand alone devices?
Add the quadcore CPU to the UDR and the UDM is an unnecessary product. Just come out with a UDR Pro for $299 and cancel the UDM.

What happens when you do a factory reset? Are you able to log into the unit again? I have a new client with one that doesnt have the passwords and can't get a hold of the old tech who installed it. UDM
Well funnily enough, the in-laws USG3 died over the weekend (released the magic smoke after 4.5 yrs of service). I would have gone with the UDR had it been available (cheaper mostly) but had to settle with a UDM from eBay (it has been out of stock for a while on the UI EU store). I am not sure I understand the rational behind the lower specs for the UDR, at first with the $99 EA price tag, it was fair, now not so much. I wouldn't run other apps on either with their 2GB of RAM though so if I need protect I would get a CK gen2 Plus to run that on.
I want a Dream Router for my Parents, seems like a good fit for them.
Agreed, this will keep lots of friends and family away from those over-priced gaming or ISP provided routers.
I just ordered a UDR last night when I saw they were back in-stock. My USG-3P still works just fine (home setup), but a device like the UDR is so appealing: no need to run a separate controller on a different machine, compatible with Protect in the very likely event that I get their video doorbell in the future, in-built Wi-Fi 6, active cooling, and expandable storage.
I have a confession, though. This was after I purchased a Cloud Key Gen 2+, thinking it could replace the USG as a firewall/router while supporting Unifi apps. Turns out, it CAN'T. The Cloud Key Gen2+ is a Unifi Controller and NVR that would still need to be paired with a standalone router/firewall/gateway. And then it died, after less than an hour of on-time....*lolcry*
Hopefully, we'll someday get a device that combines the USG and Cloudkey into one device (with ADEQUATE cooling and batteries that don't expand and fail regularly) for home and small business users. Maybe that's what the gen 2 Dream Machine will be now that the Dream Router exists. For now, the UDR is the next best thing.
I have had three UDMs fail. One customer, and two of my own. I am going to try the UDR to see if I have better results.
I'm not a fan of either of these AIO devices. POE out is nice, but I have no desire to run cables up to living space where I'd have this unit in order to take advantage of WiFi AP. Between the two, assuming they both can pass 850Mb, I'd lean to the UDR as it has more capability.
The 2 biggest issues I have with these devices are the fact that you can’t hook them up to an external controller and the fact that it’s an all in one device.
I run my cloud-based controller. I have near full control over how I do backups, make it accessible, am not required to use cloud and it helps me learning about Ubuntu a lot.
1 of the key features of more professional equipment like UniFi and Edgemax was having dedicated hardware for specific tasks. Let a router do what it does best: routing. A switch should be switching and an AP should handle wireless. It leaves room to upgrade individual components and replace defective gear. With UDM and UDR I need to replace everything, the controllers router, switch, AP etc just because a WAN port broke down (just an example). Cloud Key Gen2 Plus and UNVR’s also seem to die a lot more often than AP’s, switches and camera’s.
I want a UniFi router. No built in ap, switch, poe. Something like the er4, but that runs a UniFi controller. Is that too much to ask for?

Turn off the ssid on the udr and you’ll have what you’re asking for.
@@gregsera if the UDR is anything like the UDM then you can not turn off the WiFI Radios, best thing you can do is set them to low…
I have UDR for a few months now and I think it is a better choice over UDM. I also have Nanobeam M5 and Unifi AC Mesh AP which I tried to power up over UDR's PoE ports but no sucess? Does anyone know how to make it work?
Would the router or dream machine be better than a Protectli with pfsense?

I just upgraded to a UDR from the UDM. Speeds are horrible. UDM, with 40 devices connected and IDS turned I'm getting 940 down from my 1.2 gb connection.
UDR no IDS turned on 560 if I turn IDS on I'm looking at about 400ish.
At this point I'm about to throw it on Ebay and look at picking up the UDM pro.
I suspect the downgrade in the processor is the reason why.
What is on cable? Frankly, you just need the OS in a nice-looking form factor and get proper APs for Wifi.
I don’t need a Unifi Controller to manage the UDR, right? Just point a web browser to its IP address and everything is there under one roof? The USG can be managed for its basic networking properties, but it needs a controller if I want to change any advanced features. Is the UDR like the Edgerouter in terms of managing it? Given that it has a controller built-in, can it be used to manage Unifi devices like the UniFi Lite ACs that are deployed on multiple remote sites? Basically instead of using the Cloud Controller and paying Ubiquity money, I can use the UDR which is at home to manage a bunch of APs that are spread across the world?

I just bought a UDR for my dad cause he wants me to setup cameras around his home and with this I can remotely manage his network too. This should fit all his needs but I don't think I can recommend the UDR to my friends and colleagues as a higher performing router.
how many cameras would you put though? I have 6 on a cloudkey but wonder if a UDR with a 1TB SD card would perform the same.

Turning on full IDS/IPS may not hinder wired throughput?, but in testing significantly reduces Wi-Fi throughput. Cool product at the EA price, but sucks to have pick features vs performance.
I have IDS/IPS enabled on my UDM and see no wifi performance hit.

I have an UDM, pretty happy with its performance, looking at the UDR specs, which has only a dual core CPU, I believe it would be a real bottleneck trying to cope with a 1Gbps line with IDS/IPS enabled...
As a home user I think I'm going to save money and go with the UDR. I already have some access points and I don't need to run a lot of software on my router. I just need to do basic routing and the UDR seems like it's perfect to integrate with the rest of my unified products
Thanks for the good, short and to the point video, Howie. One consideration for older Unify networks: How does mixing Unifi wifi 6 and Unifi wifi 5 equipment in the same building work out? Does client roaming just all interoperate at the lowest common denominator (which is, wifi 5)? One would expect/think YES, no problem, but I have seen one reddit comment saying NO, they had problems until all APs were upgraded to wifi 6. It seems the safest way is to go with the UDM and its wifi 5, to interoperate with my older wifi 5 Unify APs, but if the answer is YES, then I could go with the UDR (wifi 6) and slowly migrate toward a pure wifi 6 network, swapping out older wifi 5 APs as the need arises over time.
Is it possible to turn off the network app? What else would you lose besides logs and portal? My guess is you'd have to manually tune the wifi which is fine for home use.

I wish the UDR had a bit more power. Hardwired directly to the UDR I get on average 700 down of my gigabit. Which is more than enough, but still would love to see it get more. Enable threat protection and it goes down 50 to 100.
That's the lowest number. I've seen anybody report for IDS/ IPS so far.

I don't understand why UI decided to under-power the device to he extent that it won't even hit gigabit speeds (minus overhead) without IDPS features enabled AND they conveniently neglect to mention these limitations in the UDR data sheet.
I'm wondering if Unifi dropped the core count on the new UDR because they may be working on a new USG (Fingers fully crossed - hopefully the same size as the previous one!) in which they can utilise the quad core variant to help run the other unifi products of which the UDR can only do as one additional service. For quite a few reasons I miss the USG. IT just needs a refresh even the same 1.7Gb throughput as the UDM base. I believe a device like this would do well in the Unifi line-up? What are your thoughts on this?

I wonder if it could be a thermal consideration. The UDM gets and stays pretty hot.
UDR plus U-LTE is a great solution for smaller retail spaces. Throughput is completely adequate even with max IPS and running Protect. This replaces UDM.
Both price points are too high for me as I just need a basic home setup. I'd consider the UDR if it was maybe $150 or so. However, my Netgear router is working fine so not going to rush out and replace it until it dies. If/when it does, I'll give the UDR a closer look, but I don't need all the fancy stuff it can do so time will tell.
Of course not like it matters since the dream Router has been out of stock forever. I've actually had some issues with my Netgear so figured what the hell I'll get the udr. Well maybe not if it never comes back in stock.
I wouldn't go with the UDR personally but I have the UDM. I don't like the idea of this entry level kit running more than just the network app on the lower CPU. I don't know what my next hardware would be, tempted by the UDM Pro-SE as it would allow me to add PoE ports but miss the ability to swap out components when required. Will be interesting to see what firmware comes out for the UDM/UDM Pro as already its running a bit behind the newer models.

Can I use 50 Tplink routers (TL-WR840N) in the dream machine. Is a router like as access point to a dream machine?
Starting to wonder what Unifi's goals are these days. All of this new stuff (on paper anyway) but I still can't get a standard wifi 6 ap or any camera except the AI model going on a few months. I would have hoped that in times like this there would be less focus on new non-existent (at full scale production levels, not beta) hardware and focusing on getting the core components to market.
UI has been having supply chain issues, but they are still selling the core products. They just sell out so darn fast, it's like it never came back. Gotta check the site constantly at 7am to 7:30am EST every day.
I believe the Dream Router for home use is more usefull, because of the PoE functionality and the fact that one can run Unify Protect as well on the same console. Makes it a very complete solution for home use to have full WIFI and Protection at home. Plus the latest WIFI6 ax frequencies... It is a pity that i already have the UDM since 2 years....😁
As I suspected the CPU is the bottleneck.
On my 1GBb line UDM can get up to 940Mb, with all 4 cores about 50%, UDR is 850ish max, with both cores maxed at 100%.
IDS/IPS off, QoS off, only running network app. I hope they can optimize things a bit in newer firmware.
Also, can't restore UDM settings on it, major fail.
I'm running into similar issues. Couldn't restore from the udm I ran into all sorts of issues. I had to factory reset it.
I big issue I'm hitting is I'm getting speeds of 450 when I have a gigabit connection. IDS turned off as well as no smart queues. I'm about 10 minutes from shit canning this and moving onto the udm pro.

I must say, the downgrade in cpu I dont get when they allow more app's to run on the UDR.
Most likely because the 2 cores allow the CPU to run both apps better and helps make the UDR cheaper. So I don't necessarily think it is a downgrade in CPU but rather just a different CPU probably better at what it needs to do.
Can anyone tell me:> can an ssd-card on the UDR can it be used to store ordinary files OR is it only for cameras? By ordinary files I mean a small nass like device.

The UDR only supports 2 cameras which is a shame 4 would be better as houses have 4 walls usually
I have not seen this limitation... can you advise where this is documented. Limiting to two cameras would be quite a restriction.

Probably because it’s the same CPU as the U6-LR, they are repurposing the chipset for a different product it seems.

Holy crap ! Something from Unifi that doesn't have 1 Year warranty ! Maybe they can apply the 5 year or something to their switches.. I mean $900 for a 24 port POE switch from Unifi with a 1 year Warranty is awful... Good video Though..

I would have bought the Dream Router all day long due to the cost, but the limited IDS/IPS functionality is a big downside for some.
Old UDM has better Processor which is very important to not have high latency when having loads of IOTS
Really tired of Ubiquiti these days. I’m upgrading my gear and retiring my old faithful USG 3P setup and there’s nothing even remotely comparable (at a reasonable price) to replace it from Ubiquiti. I’m not dropping $700 for a router that needs to be racked to boot. Looks like I’ll be going with a Netgate pfSense appliance instead.
Ubiquity only sells vapourware as of late.
Just get the udm and get a poe switch. It’s a better setup. If you need protect or talk just get a udm pro or se.
It makes no sense to downgrade the CPU on this, especially given that it can run additional apps that the UDM doesn't. Poor choice, Ubiquiti. Even with it being priced lower than the UDM, smart buyers will go elsewhere or choose a different system.

I have a UDM and I have some blind spots of wifi . Can you recommend me an access point that connects via WiFi and not Ethernet cable? I think it's called mesh technology or something .
Any of the new UniFi APs can be wireless uplinked.

I mean... why on earth would you get the UDM at this point? I can't think of a use case where the UDM would be a better choice than the UDR. And tbh, I'm kinda surprised that you didn't mention that fairly obvious fact.
At some point the quad core, higher clocked CPU of the UDM is going to show its advantage. Likely under heavy user load. Might not be that critical for most.
At the $79 beta price the UDR was a no-brainer, at $199, it becomes more of a why so much when competitors are beating you with stability and features.
What product at 199 is beating this?
@@WillieHowe If you only need a router and then lot's of options out there that can actually WAN/LAN forward at gigabit speeds. If you have sub-gigabit Internet and you want to keep your options open, this is not a bad device. If you just need a router, there are better options for this price.

UDR, WiFi 6 is a must.
No security gateway is the deal breaker for me. In a small apartment, an all-in-one device is ideal. Ubiquiti needs to update the Dream Machine to 802.11ax and increase production.

Biting the bullet and ditching Google WiFi for a full Unifi compliment
With internet speeds increasing the way they are. Investing in anything with a 1g wan interface is not really worthwhile.
Not sure where you're at but in the United States there are lots of places that don't need. One gig don't have one gig and won't have it for a long time. They're also places around the world that don't have it. What is your exact business need for one gig? At home? I know yes let's get one gig because we can.
In the UK you're lucky to get over 100Mbps never mind close to 1G
@@WillieHowe in my area 2.5G is starting to become very common. Yes when you are working on large video editing files and 3d rendering the speed is very nice and time saving to transfer between office and home studio. 1 g coast is $150esh 2.5 is 220 a month. That with kids streaming and VoIP. The speed is extremely important. Not a fan on the comment about having it just to have. And yes I am in the United States 🇺🇸
Dennis, Most people are not transferring large video files and 3D rendering. Video streaming and VOIP do not use very much bandwidth. 99.9% of home users do not need 1 Gbe internet. 100 or 200 Mbps is more than enough.
Too bad they don't make one with anything above a 1g WAN :( can't believe there's no 2.5g, 5g, or 10g port options. Unbelievable. Not a "dream" machine for me
