  • Thank you to Maurice and Cas from Jan Thiel Diving who were the most patient with us while we were growing our underwater lungs (especially Maurice :p) We had a great experience with them and would love to come back to dive with them again! Check out Jan Thiel diving: www.janthieldiv... (This video isn’t sponsored in any way by Jan Thiel diving)
    Also big thank you to Floris and Lieke for filming us underwater while we were taking our course!
    -
    Curacao is known for its beautiful underwater world, and Ryan and I were not going to miss them. Small problem: we are far from being divers! Ryan has issues equalizing his ears, and after a slightly traumatic first try at scuba diving a few years ago, the sole thought of breathing under the water made me anxious.
    So when Ryan approached me with the idea of trying to get our PADI certifications, I was skeptical to say the least! It took us a couple of trials to feel comfortable under the water, but we eventually did it, and decided that we were both going to do the Padi open water course.
    Now looking forward to exploring the beautiful dive sites of the ABC islands!

    Ryan, I also have problems clearing, just start clearing at the surface right before you go down, then clear as you go down. Make sure you can clear first, don't feel pressured to go down, trust me they will wait for you! Enjoy, happy diving!

    That takes me back to the time I was diving 3 or 4 times a week..... It is simple and fun... All you have to remember is inhale and exhale,, never take the regulator out of your mouth.. once the water is over your head depth doesn't really matter.

    congratulations you picked a great place to learn to scuba dive , the water is warm the visibility is usually good, and their no anchor policy in many of the bays really saves the coral. Was there in the mid 1990's had a great time

    I went on a dive with some colleagues of mine. Below, I found 3 big rocks I carried around with me. As our dive ended, we headed up for the boat. As I boarded, the guys were asking where my rocks were. I said I dropped them. “You what?!? You lost your souvenirs ? I said “souvenirs? Those were my ballast!” 😂. I had bought a new thicker wetsuit and forgot to adjust my weightbelt

    Thirty-five years ago, my husband & I were sailing in the BVI & anchored at the Wreck of the Rhône to snorkel. We floated on the surface looking down when a group of scuba divers passed beneath us. We both knew at that moment, we had to learn. We’ve spent many years of sailing & diving -we are very excited to see you following our footsteps with a love of both!

    You two did really well! I'm booked on a course which Covid has stopped, but on my occasional forays I know how difficult it is to get that confidence and breathing rhythm, particularly removing and recovering your mouth piece. There was a little tip in there from Ryan that I will have to re-watch... Looks a bit warmer than dear old blighty! Fantastic photography from the pro.

    Very cool. When I started sailing I figured I should learn to dive so when I got to the Caribbean, I would do what you guys are doing. Well, many years later and no diving or trips to the Caribbean. My wife refers to things like this as "Rocking chair moments". What do you want to remember when you are on your porch in your rocking chair. You guys are building up quite the moment list and I am thinking it is time I get on it myself. Great video!

    Super curious..... how did Ryan make out with getting his ears to equalize? When I got my PADI open water cert, I recall that it is kind of a skill that each person has to figure out for their own anatomy. I found that with a lot of jaw wiggle, if I could make it past 10M, then the rest was easy enough. My nephew had enough trouble that the inflammation from diving would keep him from diving again for a couple days, although a few drops of rubbing alcohol in the ear canal helped draw down the swelling.
    If you get into diving, Bonaire and Belize have to make it onto your travel itinerary. Stay safe and have fun!

Every dive in addition to having fun, practice one skill 3. Always always always be willing to back out of a dive that you are uncomfortable with.

    .... a whole nother world down there ..... always wanted to get padi certified and still will, but what really intrigues me now is freediving and my next warm weather vacation will be somewhere where I can take a course ... think it is so beneficial when cruising being able to just jump in the water for whatever reason in seconds in whatever you want to wear .... the breath holding techniques for doing repairs underwater .. no fear of getting the bends if you don't come up right .... can you tell I am stoked to learn this ..... oh yes and just jump in to spearfish dinner .. smilin .... when it is right for you it will be right for you ..... what an awesome place to do your Padi ...... that was quite the purple sky when you surfaced on your second dive, was that a filter or was there a storm brewing ..... once again a great reveal of your adventures .. thanks for sharing .. as always .. never stop dreaming. just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Peter! Totally recommend getting your Padi, especially in a pretty dive spot. We were mind blown by curaçao :)
      The “purple” you see is a filter meant to reintroduce red in the footage. Under 5 meters depth, the color red tends to disappear and thus we use filters to get the right colors underwater!

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  3 года назад +1

      Hello! I'm doing okay with it. I just go down really really slow. Like so slow people get bored waiting for me. Generally go down a meter, wait a bit then up a bit, then back down a little further then up. Once im to about 6 meters ill start in on the dive and below 10 meters things are generally fine. I have noticed the my ears are starting to loosen up a bit more. Ryan
