    I reached out to John with some questions about compounds, polishes, and pads on a Sunday on Facebook a few weeks ago. He responded rather quickly and answered a few other questions I ad. Admirable to say the least. The information John provides and the level of detail mixed with honesty is hard to come by in any field.

    Really enjoying these videos! Would love to see you test 1-step compounds like Sonax Cut & Finish and Scholl's S20 Black. Also, I wish 3D HD product were available to you. I've always considered HD Polish+ and Scholl's S40 & S30+ to be the best finishing abrasives.
    I'd also love to see you test out the 1-step cleaner waxes or AIO's. HD Speed, Menzerna 3n1, Meguiar's D166, etc.
    You should do an indepth forensic video on why you make all the other detailing related channels look like a bunch of amateurs.haha. You're too nice of a guy to say it but we're all thinking it.

      appreciate the kind words. the whole you tube game is a wierd thing. tbh this channel doesnt function very well as a proper you tube channel. everything is too long and the production is not great and that effects the take up and growth of it, its a slow growing small channel. The channels that get this right, deserve all their success, its such a hard thing to go in front of the camera and put out info and remain credible.
      really enjoying doing the channel at the moment, its been such a cool way to interact with so many cool people. I think a lot of the people that watch FDC are really into their detailing. because the quality of the info that comes back in the comments is always first class, I read it and sort of get good steers on other products to check out. merry xmas matt

  • @Pierriewargen
    @Pierriewargen 7 лет назад +1

    The signature trait of perfect finish for me is it's ability to finish down great on basically any paint. Great on sticky paints and solid colors without clear coat etc. If you are having trouble getting a desired finish on a car in the future, try the pf, it's almost fool proof.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  7 лет назад +1

      Im sure its gonna be very solid.. but ive been a bit put off by the range and how sonax have developed it to be used. had a good chat with another guy about it in this video comments below. that and the huge price tag we pay for it in the Uk? why when you can get fantastic abrasives for 30 quid a litre, why pay 44? Its priced off the market over here and sonax have want you to use it on a rotary with wierd tilt sets... just bizarre.. developed for body shop and instructions written for people that want to compound out sanding marks in 20 seconds.. thats not me. when I use it the way I want to use it thats wrong apparently. so im sulking :(

    I use M205 as my go-to polish and have for years. I bought a gallon of the stuff for $25 when a local detail shop closed it’s doors, so I’m sitting on a lifetime supply. Per your recommendation Jon, I have added Menzerna 3800 to my arsenal as either a jeweling polish, or occasionally as a stand alone product for “super light” micro-marring. Menzerna 3800 tends to leave slightly more gloss than M205, but of course has less cutting ability to remove light to moderate swirls. Merry Christmas from St. Louis, Missouri (USA).

    I've never used a machine polisher before, but fancy getting one. I'm torn between the Scholl S20 and the Scholl S40. I've got a 9 year old Focus, so it's nothing fancy, but I do want to improve the gloss finish a bit. I tend to polish and wax by hand twice a year, so the paintwork is in pretty good nick. What would you recommend between the two compounds? Is the S40 going to give a good finish, or would I just be better getting the S20? I use Autoglym Super Resin Polish and their HD wax currently. Thanks in advance for any recommendations

    which will mask imperfections and add some gloss. BTW for this reason I stop using Sonax PF as a one step polish, only for finishing/jewelling stage. PF is not so abrasive as shown on label.

      the rupes blue and green are very tough coarse pads for me. they really need to be warmed up and then you feel them soften a bit. I wouldnt recomend the blue actually. Even the green I find a little on the stiff side. they do function really well on the long throw machines, seem to hold their shape well and the velco backing on them is incredible. not too keen on them on the rotary.

    Whilst gloss is obviously important in a finishing polish, that's only half of the battle - some will look much crisper and wetter than others due to a few different reasons but their initial abrasiveness is obviously a big reason. Scholl S40 is the flat out ultra finishing polish IMO. 5000 grit means it has minimal cut which allows an incredibly crisp finish with insane definition which the more abrasive 'finishing polishes' can't beat. Oh, and on dark colours, especially black, S40 darkens the colour and is the best finishing polish I've ever used. To use it though, the car needs to be near flawless as S40 has very little cut.

And koch process are used in the industry a lot over in germany. they typically sand out defects and then remove polishing marks with wool on rotaries at high speeds and generate buffer trails.. then finish out the buffer trails with polish on foam pads.

    It's funny to see what other people think.. Here in Italy the school of thought is a bit closed on CarPro Essence and Angelwax Resurrection (As finishing and cutting). It's interesting to see a good alternative (Scholl) which is cheaper and gives the same results!

    Did you by chance try a black pad with any of these polishes and see if the gloss meter went up? It's what Optimum recommends to polish with as it leaves the "nicest surface" according to them. Also Lake Country agrees with that as well. What do you think?

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  7 лет назад +4

      I have not done that test on the gloss meter comparing like a polishing pad with a very softer sort of finishing pad. my guess is its going to be really hard to be able to measure a difference in what gloss I can max out at. maybe thats one to video for the future trent

    Good stuff John...Recently purchased Sonax PF and yes it's expensive. I was also surprised to see the rating on bottle at 4 for cut so I'm keen to see how it stands up against S20. I was able to remove 2000gt sanding marks using PF and wool pad on rotary which is really more an " I'm just saying " statement rather than boasting about it's cutting power.. But it was a late model Honda so paint soft. The winner here is the Gloss Meter which was able to separate the tiny differences. All hail the Gloss Meter... To the naked eye it would be hard pressed to separate these...I guess it really comes down to brand preference and price for us consumers, paint/environmental conditions for polish and technique of detailer. Unless one needs to water down one's polish for softer paints....Me Lord. It's a weird thing because once I select which one I'm using I always wonder as I'm working would the others have been a better choice...Detailers Mind Games 101.

      It all comes down to $$$$...There's a lot of products and it would be helpful if cheaper samples were readily available. They're like laundry detergents always new and improved. I'm a big fan of Menzerna 4000. BTW Sonax PF isn't sold here in Aus so I had to search Eng/EU/US...Cheapest I could find was $119aud/LT from US....Ouch!!!!

    For polishing, finishing after compound do you prefer using finishing soft pads or polishing pads. And is it better to use slower speed for finishing than cutting?

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  7 лет назад +1

      It depends really on what your doing, if your using them to refine a cut finish or if your using them on their own to remove some light swirls and bring up the finish. If Im just doing on polishing set I actually like to work the finishing polishers faster and then lift a bit towards the end of the set, but really its not going to make much odds. the main thing as always is to work all areas of the piece you are covering and gloss it all up. the finesse tips and tricks you hear can be overkill. the abrasive will deliver a certain level of finish as long as you work it sufficently. the finishing stage is really important though.. if you want to max it out.. do a second or 3 set at slower rotational speeds and hardly any pressure and just keep refining. would say Id typically researve that for high end detailing because the difference is hard to spot.

      check out the video on pre wax cleaners luke. Its a real golden oldie bured away at the bottem of the videos. if you click the videos tab and order themin oldest first you will find it.
      I was using lime prime abrasive cleaner. Its highly effective but Im moving away from it because I find whatever solvent or cleaner is in it is a bit too potent for me.
      The only way to remove fresh wax or sealant is with an abrasive (polish or cleaner). If you use an abrasive polish though you have to then degrease that polish afterwards. So really an abrasive cleaner that doesnt contain oils is the way to go.. I just need to find one that words for me know as well.

      the problem is all of them except for sonax PF put down virtually identical levels of gloss as far as I could read.
      I really cant tell you out of those 5 which matched which is the most glossy. Id be making it up as they are all so close..
      but I guess going by the glossmeter Koch gave the highest individual reading following by M205. After that probably S40 and fs4000 and DK finale were about the same.

      generally if theres lots of swirls then theres a whole range of depth of scratch and its like peeling layers off an onion.. but say you needed to do like 2-3 compounding sets. thats heavy correction and you want to be maximising (without reason) the amount of cut your tooling and pad setup with reasonably allow.

    Hi the s40 swirl polish is recommended on dark colored cars, can you recommended something for cutting and something for fine polishing for a alpine white bmw? i have just bought a DAS6 PRO and only have meguiars ultimate compound which did leave some swirls behind as my BMW is hard paint. • @ForensicDetailing

      so S3 gold is a good heavy cut dimishing compound. And s40 is a final finish product. You have some in between products in the scholl concepts range like S17, and s20 1 step. these will work well on your das6 pro on the BMW.

      I have a alpine white BMW and used Menzeena FG400 for cutting. It's good for light swirls but maybe for deeper ones you'll need a heavier compound. I'm buying Koch H8 or Menzerna M100 to get rid of scratches made by bushes on the left side of the car.

    Why then Esoteric Car Care and Obsessed Garage are using Perfect Finish for finish? Esoteric also uses a gloss meter.

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  6 лет назад +2

      Because it will make the car look good? The readings are the readings, dont shoot the messenger, and I doubt anyone else has benchmarked them against other products on the same calibration set on flat test panels.
      for a one stage product it has very high gloss, in fact more than the other one stage products ive measured it against, but it didnt match the gloss readings of these out and out finishing polishes, which makes sense. In single set scenarios its hard to beat. but its not a refining finishing polish, it has a really good amount of cut before it breaks down, but use it however you want to.. have a watch of the S20 versus perfect finishing video on the channel.

      I bought FG400 and Perfect Finish to polish a BMW Alpine White with Rupes White Pad and Meguiars MF Cutting Disc, but some scratches of the left side are still there, i guess FG400 has not enough cutting power . Do U recommend me to use the Scholl´s line S20 and S40? or maybe as a compound Koch Chemie H08.2.?
      Esoteric recommends Perfect Finish on soft paint. They say it shines above others.
      Best regards

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  6 лет назад +1

      Yo Ramon its hard for me to recomend something based on what you said, Im not trying to be awkward , Its just im not there I cant eyeball it so Im guessing. so you hit up some paintwork with FG400 on an MF cutting pad and there were still scratches. Im not sure if your using a DA or forced rotation or rotary (assuming DA with MF).. theres so many other unknown variables. That does not mean FG400 isnt delivering what you need it to deliver.. it might just mean you have deep scratches that you should not even atempt to cut out. FG400 has a good level of cut, if you were a professional and really wanting explore lots of options.. yes H8.02 you will find it has a lot more cut (imo) than FG400, but it can be more prone to dusting (its not a bad duster though).. but if your a guy at home you dont really need to go investing in loads of other compounds unless you really want to. Just go again. If your BMW is like F series generation stuff generally speaking you get a decent amount of clear to play with and it can be bullet rock hard, especially white.
      you dont need to invest in Scholl S20 if you have perfect finish.. PF will out cut S20 as well imo (and out finish it). With PF just make sure you clean those pads out well especially if your using very soft pads. PF will cut a lot early on and a fine pad will clog up quickly with it.. If you use PF a few times you will notice on a clean pad it performs great but can start sticking out after 4-5 sets, even if your scrub out the debry after each set.. if your going to use PF I would suggest you use it on the yellows as well. swap out pads with it a lot.. but use PF as a single stage imo (although might be times when it would be cool to use it to step down a heavier product its finish is very good, seem to recal talking about this in a video)
      sounds like what you dont have is an out and out finishing polish. S40 is a nice one its very oily though and it can clog ultra fine pads as well.. I would suggest you actually stick with FG400, perhaps grab some H8.02 only if you like exploring products and stuff (you will findit usefull but you can survicve with FG400). And for finishing polishes check out SF3500 and SF3800 I would have both of these. The extra cut of 3500 comes in usefull if you discover compound marring, or just fine scratches or MF haze etc after cutting, or just for a light 1 stage style enhancement (fine polish with a bit of cut). 3800 is an out and out refiner, very little cut (as little as it gets). very cool product and its something that can really make a difference, this will work fine on white rupes pads. This is what you should use if you want to spend the time glossing up paintwork after you are satisfied you have done all the cutting you should do. combo'ing FG400 with PF isnt gonna be an ideal team.. believe it on not you can actually get as much cut with the PF set (maybe a bit less).. where as you want to step down after fg4000, so goto 3500 or 3800.
      but important for me to say dont always chase a scratch free results because thats not realistic (hard to comment though on what those scratches you want to remove are).. Im writing this post assuming you dont have much panel time and that may not be the case so apolagies.

    • @ramonangeldelaguilaruiz4029
      @ramonangeldelaguilaruiz4029 6 лет назад

      The scratches I try to remove are from the left side of my car. The car is a E81, not an F, from Spain so thats the passenger side. They are not so deep, I guess they were made by bushes on the right side of the road.
      I'm newbie and this is my fist car, my own car. I'm using a Rupes LHR15. I cared my car a lot but after 11 years It had some light swirls so I thought I could get rid of them with Sonas PF. No luck.
      The side of the car is very concave and Rupes stalls a lot so I thought 2 case scenarios, I need a LHR75 or I need a heavier compound. I'm gonna buy the machine because there are places where I cannot polish with the 15 and I thought also on buying a heavier compound in case the machine is not the problem but the paint. The paint is very hard because even on flat surfaces with four passes and FG400 some swirls remained on edges, I guess lack of tecnique too.
      Thank you for your long answer.

With S40 I were able to remove the most visible swirl marks but after polishing there are still som light/micro swirls left. Shouldn’t S40 also be able to remove those given that it removed the more visible ones? Should I go for a more aggressive compound? I am using a DA polisher. Thanks in advance!

    Great video Jon. Just a quick question on the Menzerna 3500. I’ve given that a try using my DAS6 Pro and a Meguiar’s black finishing pad on a cool day. No matter what speed I set my polisher to it just threw grey dust everywhere after two sets of horizontal & vertical passes. I’m new to this polishing lark so was a bit disappointed with that. Have you any idea what I’ve done wrong?

    Hi John, I always finish with the Scholl S30 after the S3. I find it a very easy to use polish and in my opinion with the same gloss rating as the S40? Can you tell me if there is a difference between these two?

    • @ForensicDetailing
      @ForensicDetailing  7 лет назад +1

      Ive not used S30. Scholl rate the gloss as 6/6 which matches S40. Its dimishing but has more cut.
      Im not 100% sure if its gonna have a less glossy finish than s40. my gut instinct thinks s40 would be able to refine the paint more. but Im guessing here. If it is less glossey your eyes might not be able to spot it.. We could be talking literally a couple of units of gloss that a meter might be able to read.
      Without playing around with it I shouldnt really guess. but S20 also has a gloss rating of 6/6 but I think s40 will refine paint to a higher finish (as long as your giving it a suitable starting point, for example your not using it to refine a hazed up rough finish)

    • @daryldevine8517
      @daryldevine8517 5 лет назад

      S30 is excellent but S40 takes it a step further. S30 is more versatile though as it has more bite. S40 can't be beaten for a wet and crisp finish - it is Scholl's ultra finishing polish and that's the reason why it can only take out 5000 grit scratches, so the finish can be as flat and crisp as possible.
