I stepped off the QM2 about 12 hours ago after having crossed the Atlantic and our crossing was apparently one of the smoothest ever. How different it could have been.
Still sounds like a amazing trip but one day sun! Thats tough laying out on the decks in the cold lol Thats why i love cruises in Australia were we can get lots off sun.
I am weighing sailing on her to Southampton for our 2012 summer vacation, just about ready to go for it! She is magnificent! We sail on Oasis in 30 days and this ship can live up to the grandeur of the former, and that is saying a LOT!
I stood on the Golden Gate Bridge as she passed under. The deck was close enough to the bridge that you could jump off the bridge and safely land on the queen. Not very many pedestrian bridges in the world that allow such a close view while stamding directly over such a large ship.
I've made three North Atlantic crossings in her, in 2004, 2005, and 2016. By the last one, things had changed. Mostly young Eastern European hotel crews, and "Hamilton Bermuda" was on her stern, instead of "Southampton." That Cunard magic was gone as well.
Excellent, detailed documentary. Pity Britain, the most storied of all maritime nations, can no longer build such magnificence. At least there is Rolls-Royce - still the daddy of maritime gear.
thats right , is good you mention that fact there , theres a hundred and one things resting on the person carrying the can in any big transport operation .
Matt: absolutely not. As much as it may be a beautiful piece of engineering, it is the most unnecessary polluting luxury entertainment item one can think of!
Matt . Matt, you are just confirming that this is absolutely unnecessary! The fact that you get fooled by the glamour of cruising is one thing and it is your very prerogative. Denying how unnecessary this is as well as the environmental burden of cruising is ignorance.
I would agree that the Captain of such a vessel has an enormous responsibility on his shoulders, but he also has the support of dozens of Officers and Seamen. Judges (in the UK at least) have a workload that would surprise you, they don't just sit in judgement of criminal trials. Politicians are just cunts.
The captain of the passenger ship bear huge responsibility as lots of passengers mostly not aware of potential hazard onboard... especially fire hazard....safe voyage to all seafarers....ship is my home...sea is my playground...
We were lucky to sail QM2 from the proper NYC piers in Mid-Town for two trips-one Transat and one Caribbean cruise. Sailing down the Hudson past Manhattan and out to sea is the classic NYC sailing.
There is a pilot boat in each port which comes alongside the ship when he is finished, it will also deliver him to the ship when it is arriving into a port. He will call the boat on the radio and then an Officer escorts him down to a hatch in the side where he climbs down a ladder to embark the boat to take him back to shore.
Oh I’m booked to sail from New York to Southampton on the Queen Mary 2 in December 2021. I will be spending 4 days in New York, my first visit to the USA then the voyage of a lifetime. 7 days on this magnificent liner. My life is blessed. Not my first sailing, I have cruised around the arctic circle in November storms and I’m very excited to be traveling on this beauty.
Oh I want to sail on her so badly. It is a tossup between QM2 to Southampton or a 10 day Greek Isles on Royal Caribbean for 2012. Sailing on Oasis this year though which is also very exciting!
@hurro67 It's also British designed, operated and managed. P&O handles a great deal of Cunard's operations while Princess Cruises handles much of the onboard operations and design og both Icky Vicky and the QE. Lead designer Therse Anderson, who gave us the Love Boat, also designed the last refit for QM2 and her upcoming refit at the end of the year. She may have strong UK owenrship ties..but she is a Carnival Cruise Lines vessel. NO desire to even look or travel on these Carnival ships
lol @ 'horn'. You think the ships funnels are an acoustic device? That's fucking brilliant. You Johnny Foreigners never cease to amuse with your ignorance that borders on retardation.
@Lufthansa631: On a 7 night crossing (they've slowed the crossing time down due to fuel prices since this show was shot) there are 4 formal nights where most men where a tuxedo. The first and last night is "elegant casual" (jackets but no ties required) since everyone's still busy packing or unpacking. There's one Semi-formal night where a dark suit is appropriate.
BTW, Titanic was also an American owned ship. Britain's White Star Line was owned by the IMM-an American company that owned several shipping lines. It later reverted to British ownership before merging w/Cunard in the 1930s,
I always considered it interesting that a P&O Captain was named Commodore of the Cunard Fleet. Bypassing the Cunard captains who had worked for years to be in line for the promotion. Then there is Alistair Greer who was a P&O employee for years. To shed light on why some of you may have heard Cunard feels "very P&O" is because Princess/P&O runs, manages & designs for Cunard. QE/QV were designed by P&O Lead Designer Therese Anderson & didthe recent QM2 refit. Cunard is a shell of its former self
On night of the September 10th-11th 1995 the QM2 was slammed by a 95 foot high wave, followed by two smaller waves. The captain, Captain Warwick, reported winds to 130 miles per hour with average wave heights of 40 feet. The 95 foot wave hit as most passengers were asleep in their beds at 4:10am. The captain said, "At 04:10am the rogue wave was sighted right ahead, looming out of the darkness from 220°, it looked as though the ship was heading straight for the white cliffs of Dover. The wave seemed to take ages to arrive but it was probably less than a minute before it broke with tremendous force over the bow. An incredible shudder went through the ship, followed a few minutes later by two smaller shudders. There seemed to be two waves in succession as the ship fell into the 'hole' behind the first one. The second wave was of 28-29 meters, whilst breaking, it crashed over the foredeck, carrying away the forward whistle mast.
6:29 How can those passengers be allowed to smoke on board in what looks to me to be an enclosed passenger area? In the few cruise ships I have sailed on, the rule has always been that smoking is STRICTLY outdoors in a designated non-smoking area only
They're at the bar. A lot of cruises allow smoking at the bar. Some even have cigar rooms where you can smoke those. Smoking is often allowed at the casino as well. It depends on your cruise.
Nobody would yell that on today's ships. A radar would detect it and the bow thrusters would be turned on making the ship shift to the side much faster. Before the rudder and shaft propellers were the new. Now the QM2's mermaid pods eliminate the need of a propeller, she has a stronger engine and bow thrusters (propellers on the side of the front of the ship) to make her move faster.

Dont think a bowtruster had make any differens for TT. Because when a ship make way into the water in high speed the bowthrusters doesent have any force. Mr. Sir a cruise ship cannot cross the Atlantic Ocean. An ocean liner like the RMS Titanic and the RMS Queen Mary 2 as seen on this video are designed to cross the Atlantic even on stormy weather. A cruise ship would likely topple over and sink. Also, an ocean liners are faster and more powerful.
I was on the QM2 a couple of years ago. Ocean liners have a totally different atmosphere to cruise ships, an atmosphere of elegance and classiness and an era of time gone by that you don't find on a cruise ship.
There are plenty of cruise ships that cross the Atlantic. But an Ocean liner is faster and more sea worthy, like ships were built before transcontinental air travel. Most cruise ships today are just built to carry as many paying passengers as possible, and they go around the worst weather which is possible today thanks to satellites.

@TheTraveltube The entire Olympic Class were financed by an American who OWNED the company. Titanic was American owned and financed, while only registered in the UK.
@transonicbuoy1 I perfectly agree. We have strived in our quest to become economically viable, to such an extreme that we have become little more than an island with a magnificent cruise line. Once, we were synonymous for our navy. Now, we are renowned for our tea.
Can't argue with Charlieiscool1000 titanic was a British owned ship run by the British I.e. White star line and built in ireland The Oceanic Steam Navigation Company or White Star Line of Boston Packets, more commonly known as the White Star Line, was a prominent British shipping company, today most famous for its ill-fated vessel, the RMS titanic someone needs to get his facts in order and I don't know google the white star line.

oasis of the seas is a cruise ship not an ocean liner as qm2 is an ocean liner there is a difference, plus oasis is no longer the largest passenger ship as that went to harmony of the seas and recently was topped again by symphony of the seas
@lasuvidaboy There is a difference between being based and being owned. Cunard is 100% owned by Carnival Corp-USA based in Miami, Florida, USA. Carnival Corp also owns 100% of Holland America which is an even more 'seperate' division than Cunard. Cunard was in fact run by California based Princess Cruises for a short period after QM2 was built. Today Cunard is run out of Carnival's UK offices BUT Cunard line is still 100% American owned and the Miami offices makes ALL the final decisions
@crazynathan552 Just like when the QM2 went to San Francisco, it had to wait for a higher tide because it was going to ground, but it is still a little bit of dramatic, like the music, and the moment of truth, if they couldnt clear the bridge they would simply wait, until the tide changes.
@hurro67 Everything you said was correct, except that Queen Mary 2 is owned by an American Corporation. Carnival Corporation bought Cunard, then they paid to build the Queen Mary 2.
Really? I heard that horn once, in '67 when she arrived in LA harbor. My mom came to America on the 1st Queen Mary, we had to see the ship arrive, & we were on a hill in Palos Verdes with what seemed like every Brit living in Southern California. When they sounded the horn pretty emotional moment for those British folks.
@3:42- Yeah, but the Cunard Line politely requests that the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey consider making a portion of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into a DRAW bridge ;)

oasis of the seas is a cruise ship not an ocean liner as qm2 is an ocean liner there is a difference, plus oasis is no longer the largest passenger ship as that went to harmony of the seas and recently was topped again by symphony of the seas
@@tonyp011 Say what you want the Oasis class are still larger ships!
It's a Ocean Liner. Great line but it's still smaller than some of the new Cruise ships.
5:56 is that clock Mondaine or Solari di Udine ? or what ?
@lasuvidaboy There is a difference between being based and being owned. Cunard is 100% owned by Carnival Corp-USA based in Miami, Florida, USA. Carnival Corp also owns 100% of Holland America which is an even more 'seperate' division than Cunard. Cunard was in fact run by California based Princess Cruises for a short period after QM2 was built. Today Cunard is run out of Carnival's UK offices BUT Cunard line is still 100% American owned and the Miami offices makes ALL the final decisions
It shows too.😭
@crazynathan552 Just like when the QM2 went to San Francisco, it had to wait for a higher tide because it was going to ground, but it is still a little bit of dramatic, like the music, and the moment of truth, if they couldnt clear the bridge they would simply wait, until the tide changes.
@Atramentar I thought inside Queen Mary only have dense bushes...
@hurro67 Everything you said was correct, except that Queen Mary 2 is owned by an American Corporation. Carnival Corporation bought Cunard, then they paid to build the Queen Mary 2.
the RMS queen mary 2 has got the RMS queen Mary's horn
Nice
@3:42-
Yeah, but the Cunard Line politely requests that the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey consider making a portion of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into a DRAW bridge ;)
Anybody can help me to find job in ship..atlest give me a link .am looking job.my dream there but i dont know which ship is good anf real..pls help my brothers
anil soman - this ship, as all cruising ships, is a temple of pollution and modern slavery!
