I played this game yesterday with three other friends and loved it, especially the part of bluffing. Just before the end of this one round only me and another player were left. I was holding the Princess and then picked up a Chancellor. What I did was to play the Chancellor where I picked a Guard and a Baron. I kept the Baron and placed the Guard and the Princess at the bottom in such order so I would be sure that later I would pick up the Guard and my friend the Princess. Then she played another Guard she was holding naming the Princess that she thought I had in my hand and received a negative response. Next turn, she picked up the Princess and I could see her joy in her face for she had the highest ranking card just before the end of the round, but it was already over. I picked up the last Guard card that I had placed myself there two turns ago and simple named her having the Princess, ending the round. She asked me how the hell I was sure that she had the Princess and became furious when she learned that I had placed it there few moments ago. Oh that feeling of pleasure :D

Hi Rodney, there's one situation I've always been confused about that you kind of touched on. Suppose all of the other players have played Handmaiden this round and on my turn I have a Prince and the Princess. Since I can't play Prince on anyone else, would I be forced to play the Prince on myself, discard the Princess, and thus eliminate myself? I've always played with a house rule that if the other players have all played Handmaiden you can "choose" one of them with Prince, in which case nothing would happen and it would just move on to the next player's turn. Great video as always, and yes, very impressive bag flip!

Bit confused by the spy... technically the only person left in the round at the end of a round is the one that has won the round. So is the person who has won the round the only person able to get the “spy” token?
Being eliminated is different from not winning a round. Every player can get to the end of the round without being eliminated, assuming they are not eliminated before the deck runs out. Then you you would give one favor token to each person who has at least one spy, and one favor token to each player with the highest value card[s]. There is no "technical" elimination because someone won. You just award favor tokens based on the rules.
What if one player has the Prince and apply its ability (force another player to discard his card) and that person has the spy? Will he take the point if he's the only one with the spy or does the Prince cancel the spy's ability?
I'm not sure I quite understand the question. Can you explain what you mean by "or does the Prince cancel the spy's ability?". I'm just wondering why you would think it would (that might help me better understand your question if I can understand where you're coming from).
The Spy card says "if you are the only player who has played or DISCARDED the Spy". So when the Prince card says "the player DISCARDS their hand", yes, you get the favor token at round end (if you're the only one with the Spy in front of you). Had the same question at one stage.
I have a question about the Spy: if at the end of the round I'm the only player who played or discarded a Spy, but my opponent had the higher number card, does that mean he won the round but both of us take a token? Or does it mean that I'm the winner?
Having the Spy doesn't win you the round, it just gives you a token, so in the case above, they won the round and gained a token for that, and you gained a token for having the only Spy in the discard. Hope that helps!
It is not very clear how to play regarding the guard. Shouldn't the player called reveal and exchange cards if they don't have the named card? If the player is lying, you will never know as on their turn, they can simply swap cards O_o You cannot only reveal to the player(playing guard), as if on the next turn they have a 2nd guard they can simply take your out of the round. That's the only aspect which is not clear in that game. How to resolve someone playing guard.
Hey there Ben, I hope I don't come across as defensive (I don't intend to), but I don't think this is a question of clarity, but more that you're not sure if it really works the way the video is saying - it does :) Could players cheat? Yes, but players can cheat in any game (although certainly some games make it easier than others). This would not be a game to play with people who value winning above playing by the rules and ensuring everyone has a good time.
@@WatchItPlayed you ain't thanks. It's just that trying to introduce the game to people who are asking about that one aspect :/ and I don't know how to résolve this.
Yes it seems to be a deluxe version with additional characters, but not very handy to take in a trip :) The second edition seems to have some little changes (the design for example). In France I don't know if the game will be available :'(
Womi Soundeba compared to the premium edition Lovecraft Letter is still superior. It comes with custom sleeves and nice weighted poker chips for points counters and implements new game mechanics that make it really change up game play.
Thanks Rodney I played my first game of Love Letters with my family tonight, on this occasion it seemed to make sense to simply let everyone watch your video instead of my garbled regurgitation and this explained everything they needed to know thanks for your clear and concise presentation.
Hello Rodney, Are you sure that when you discard a card as the prince (5) effect or you loose to the baron(3), you should show your card? I consider myself a veteran love letter player, all the time we kept those cards secret... (face down).
I just played this for the first time today (the classic version) so, I was surprised that the newer edition I bought had the extra cards but, boy howdy...it was a relatively mindless and relaxing "pick n' play" style game that I really enjoyed. Looking forward to playing it again.
That's a badass bag flipping right there! Love your video. But I want to ask if I got a King (7) in my hand, then I draw a Chancellor (6) . I decided to use the Chancellor (6), which gives me the Countess (8) and the Priest (2). In this case, what card should I keep? It is up to me to decide or I need to place the Countess (8) in the discard pile because I got the King (7) in my hand, and then put one card back to the bottom of the deck and keep one for myself?
Two questions: 1) In AEG's version, a tie at the end of a round would be resolved in favor of the player with the higher value of cards played in front of him or her. Has that rule been changed in this edition? 2) When a prince is played as the final card and the deck has been depleted, in AEG's version, the targeted player discards their card and then draws the face down card that was placed off to the side at the beginning of the round. Has that been changed as well? (Mostly just curious. Thanks!! Great work, as usual.)
Hey Jason, these questions are covered in the video, along with all the other new rules in this edition of the game. I always try to help with questions, but I stick to ones that may come up that aren't in the video itself (limited time, etc).
Oops. Sorry! Now I have to go back and watch it again. I should have figured you wouldn't have missed those rules. You're far too thorough! My bad... :)
Nice video! If I have the princess and a guard, and play the guard to name a card of an opponent, that he has the princess to confuse him, is this allowed? Thanks!
i love this game and how intense sometimes it gets...i have both t and 2nd ed copy of the game. now u are telling that 2nd ed is for 5 or more players? or a 3 player game u still play with classic cards?
You can use the new cards in a 3 player game as well, but if you want to, you can play with just the classic cards (but then your game can only be 2-4 players, as there wouldn't be enough cards for 5-6)
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
I don't quite understand the timing of the spy. Are you supposed to have it in front of you after the round ends and you're still alive (i.e. you were the last man standing or the deck finished and you weren't eliminated -even if you don't end up with the highest number-) or are you supposed to be the only one with a spy by the time the turn comes back to you?
@@WatchItPlayed You say in the video that the person with a spy who's out of a round doesn't count. So in order for the spy to give you the token you also have to be "alive" at the end of the round?
@@cabalpaxiarch7239 Yes, you'll find that explained here: ruclips.net/video/RiQ2To5KWJM/видео.html Pay careful attention to the specific wording used in explaining it. Let me know if that helps.
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - what I find fun and 2 players, you might not - so I prefer to show the game I hope that helps you decide if it suits your tastes or not.
Hey there, I'm not sure I understand your question, but it may be that you don't understand how the princess works. It's hard for me to know how to answer this question because I can't tell that you understand and don't understand. Perhaps it would help you to watch the portion of the video about the princess and Prince again.
@@WatchItPlayed thanks, i understood from the video that you play a card in front of you and resolve it’s ability. The princess’s ability takes you out of the round. The prince forces another player to play a card in their hand but as you stated at 4:05 you don’t resolved cards ability when the prince forces you, however, a few seconds later in your video you point out how strong the prince is because you could force a player player to play the princess and drop out if the round. So the question is do you or don’t you resolve an ability when the prince forces it out of your hand, if not than you should not drop out if you have the princess in hand.
@@wondermot2780 When you are forced to discard a card by the Prince's ability, you do not resolve it. This is it's general rule. However, it is important to note the wording on the Princess card specifically. It says "If you play 'or discard' her", you are out of the round. ruclips.net/video/RiQ2To5KWJM/видео.html Hope that helps!
Hey Geo, I avoid giving personalized recommendations like that. What one person enjoys at 2 players, another may not, so I just don't try to guess at that for someone else. Hopefully the video can help you understand how it plays though!

@@Bocalt I would just explain that players in this game (and any game) are expected not to cheat.
I like the new version because it allows more players, but I own Lovecraft Letter which is by and far the best version of this game.
And compared to the premium version?
Mine's some sort of special edition that has a second deck you use if 5-8 players. Came with really nice sleeves and wooden tokens and stuff.
Yes it seems to be a deluxe version with additional characters, but not very handy to take in a trip :)
The second edition seems to have some little changes (the design for example).

Hey, glad to know we could team up :)
I am confused whether to buy the first edition or this one...Which one do you recommend
Since you can play the original version with the new version, I'd recommend the new version.
Full style marks for that sweet opening at 0:11.
Hello Rodney, Are you sure that when you discard a card as the prince (5) effect or you loose to the baron(3), you should show your card? I consider myself a veteran love letter player, all the time we kept those cards secret... (face down).
I am sure, but if you can find a rue that says otherwise, please let me know!
My friend have bean playing it so worng
Hope this helps for the next time you play!
Excellent as always Rodney.
Thank you kindly!
I luv the bag tricks at the start and end!
Thanks just picked this game up and now feel ready to teach my family so we can play
I hope you all have a great time playing together!
I just played this for the first time today (the classic version) so, I was surprised that the newer edition I bought had the extra cards but, boy howdy...it was a relatively mindless and relaxing "pick n' play" style game that I really enjoyed.
Looking forward to playing it again.
Glad you had a fun time playing!
Always a pleasure to watch, Rodney. We have lost count of the games you have helped us play.
So glad to have been a virtual part of your gaming!
Woah... how many times did you flip the game until you caught it?? Or was that first try?
ruclips.net/video/9WXTNh3fsM0/видео.html
So it is ok to play the Countess card if your other card is the princess? It just throws off your opponent?
Certainly!
FANTASTIC GAME!! the new edition is more agile than the last! many thanks for the tutorial this game is next on my to get list!
Did you end up getting it? Hope you enjoyed!
Such a pleasant and fun explanation video. It's a really good game
Very glad you enjoyed it!
So if you are the only player left with a spy card and you win the round you would get two favour tokens?
Correct!
Already know the rules - came here just to give you a Thumb Up. Bye.
Thanks for the Thumb!
After drawing cards into your hand from the Countess, you can then discard ANY 2 cards (so you could pick the King).
Got it! Thank you!
In order to be in the round at the end of a round means you won the round. So the spy only works if you win or tie?
You've got it.
My bad... :)
❤🎉😊
Nice video!
If I have the princess and a guard, and play the guard to name a card of an opponent, that he has the princess to confuse him, is this allowed?
Thanks!
Sure is (and very clever!)
@@WatchItPlayed thanks again!
Guys do you think would it br okay it i add chancellor but not the spy
Not sure - haven't tried that.
i love this game and how intense sometimes it gets...i have both t and 2nd ed copy of the game. now u are telling that 2nd ed is for 5 or more players? or a 3 player game u still play with classic cards?
You can use the new cards in a 3 player game as well, but if you want to, you can play with just the classic cards (but then your game can only be 2-4 players, as there wouldn't be enough cards for 5-6)
@@WatchItPlayed thanks rodney
If it tied when the deck runs out both players get victory or count the total sum of all the cards in front for only one winner?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks.
I did not think they had updated this.
Happy to provide a surprise!
Do you know if this is getting a premium edition? My nieces have been enjoying this game and I would like to get them a copy for Christmas.
Hey Frank, I would say this edition is the premium one for now. Not aware of any other versions coming.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks. They are 8 and 10 and are loving it. They were asking about the Queen.
Gotta getthis one once it comes out (in French).
Cool video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Rodney ma BOIII!
Love your content. Your intro music is a tad too loud fyi.
Thanks Troy! Also, I think my more recent videos have adjusted for the audio difference.
You the man Rodney! This hobby would be nothing without you!
Very kind of you to say Sam - glad you've been enjoying!
Always enjoy this game.
Great review. So clear and helpful!
Very glad you enjoyed!
The Spy's ability is checked at the end of the round (when either the deck has run out, or only one person is left in the game).
Love this game … thanks for the video. Also, that catch you made? AWESOME!
You need to play this with honest people though, or with someone that checks the cards if they're telling the truth
Very true - but really, you need to play all games with honest people (there are lots of ways to cheat in many games).
@@WatchItPlayed yes but this makes it easier lol
Wooooow mega fliiiiip!!! :-D
Crisp and to the point… 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you kindly!
Is this game fun with 2 people?
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - what I find fun and 2 players, you might not - so I prefer to show the game I hope that helps you decide if it suits your tastes or not.
More game flips pls
niceeee
Hi Rodney, why if the princess is revealed by the prince do you get knocked out of the round. I thought you have to reveal without using the effect?
@@WatchItPlayed thanks!
Is this good for two players?
Hey Geo, I avoid giving personalized recommendations like that. What one person enjoys at 2 players, another may not, so I just don't try to guess at that for someone else. Hopefully the video can help you understand how it plays though!
Excellent video.
I have the 1st edition of this game, and the cards have this problem of splitting in half when I shuffle them, like thier two separate cards being held up with cheap glue, is that a problem with the second edition set?
Did you happen to buy your copy online? Sounds like you might have a forged copy.
I have never had problems with card splitting in either edition.
@@WatchItPlayed I won mine in a contest at school a long time ago, I have no idea where they got it from.
@@WatchItPlayed What probably happened was a teacher bought a used copy off of Ebay without digging into the seller's history, and I happened to win this bootleg version of the game. As soon as I get the money, I'm buying a replacement copy and throwing out the old one. Everything else looks rather convincing though, almost as if the seller bought a legit copy and used a copy machine to make thier own cards for cheap. I guess I should just be glad I'm not the one who got swindled. There were other games that people competed for, I hope those are legit copies and not fakes like I got.
@@redzgaming6880 It's been a bigger problem in the board game industry than most people realize. Buyer beware when shopping for deals on ebay and even amazon.
@@WatchItPlayed I'll probably wait for this covid crap to go away, because then I can go to my local tabletop gaming store and get a real copy.
What is new to this version?
I don't recall the differences. New art and new roles for sure, but you can play the original version with this set as well. Perhaps this article would help? www.zmangames.com/en/news/2019/4/5/new-faces-love-letter/
hahahahahaahahahahaha love the toss
