@WatchItPlayed Just a quick question. I'm new to the game and I'm uncertain as to whether all players should keep any discarded cards separate from those that they've "played" eg. If someone plays a Prince against me do I place the card I discard in a separate pile or are my cards all displayed together face up? This is particularly important if I discard a Spy. I'm assuming if it's discarded it wouldn't be considered 'played" by me at round end. Thx
@@paulspalding6880 This part of the video might help: ruclips.net/video/RiQ2To5KWJM/видео.htmlfeature=shared&t=238. Suppose all of the other players have played Handmaiden this round and on my turn I have a Prince and the Princess. Since I can't play Prince on anyone else, would I be forced to play the Prince on myself, discard the Princess, and thus eliminate myself? I've always played with a house rule that if the other players have all played Handmaiden you can "choose" one of them with Prince, in which case nothing would happen and it would just move on to the next player's turn. Great video as always, and yes, very impressive bag flip!
I'll go ahead and answer this one. Yep, in that situation - you would be forced to Prince your Princess.... :) - Definitely how its played on Boardgamearena.com
I just played this for the first time today (the classic version) so, I was surprised that the newer edition I bought had the extra cards but, boy howdy...it was a relatively mindless and relaxing "pick n' play" style game that I really enjoyed. Looking forward to playing it again.
I thought for the chancellor you draw two, choose one between those two, then put the other one at the bottom of the bottom of the deck along with your remaining card. I did this once and didn't realise I had to throw away my princess, losing me the round.
Yes it seems to be a deluxe version with additional characters, but not very handy to take in a trip :) The second edition seems to have some little changes (the design for example). In France I don't know if the game will be available :'(
Womi Soundeba compared to the premium edition Lovecraft Letter is still superior. It comes with custom sleeves and nice weighted poker chips for points counters and implements new game mechanics that make it really change up game play.
So good they came out with this edition. The deluxe edition for more players isn't great. Haven't played it much but we don't like adding those cards. This is fantastic in that it's just a few more cards and we can more players. We don't have to learn more character cards like with the deluxe version. I think I may buy this edition. Thanks for this video. 👍
A question: if player A plays the "Prince" and a player "B" discards the Spy, will this Spy give 1 coin to the player B in the end of the game if a player B is only 1 person with a Spy? Basically the question is if the Prince discarding keeps the other's player Spy property active after discarding it Thank you in advance!
Two questions: 1) In AEG's version, a tie at the end of a round would be resolved in favor of the player with the higher value of cards played in front of him or her. Has that rule been changed in this edition? 2) When a prince is played as the final card and the deck has been depleted, in AEG's version, the targeted player discards their card and then draws the face down card that was placed off to the side at the beginning of the round. Has that been changed as well? (Mostly just curious. Thanks!! Great work, as usual.)
Hey Jason, these questions are covered in the video, along with all the other new rules in this edition of the game. I always try to help with questions, but I stick to ones that may come up that aren't in the video itself (limited time, etc).
Oops. Sorry! Now I have to go back and watch it again. I should have figured you wouldn't have missed those rules. You're far too thorough! My bad... :)
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
When there are only two players left, I hold a Princess and a Prince, my only opponent left in the game played a Handmaiden last round, can I still keep the highest card value @ (9)Princess, and still play Prince and my opponent just immune by the effect played? Thus I still win the round by keeping the value (9) in my hand?(simply not target myself by Prince Card's ability)😅
I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects and their interactions, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
That's a badass bag flipping right there! Love your video. But I want to ask if I got a King (7) in my hand, then I draw a Chancellor (6) . I decided to use the Chancellor (6), which gives me the Countess (8) and the Priest (2). In this case, what card should I keep? It is up to me to decide or I need to place the Countess (8) in the discard pile because I got the King (7) in my hand, and then put one card back to the bottom of the deck and keep one for myself?
Hello Rodney, Are you sure that when you discard a card as the prince (5) effect or you loose to the baron(3), you should show your card? I consider myself a veteran love letter player, all the time we kept those cards secret... (face down).
What if one player has the Prince and apply its ability (force another player to discard his card) and that person has the spy? Will he take the point if he's the only one with the spy or does the Prince cancel the spy's ability?
I'm not sure I quite understand the question. Can you explain what you mean by "or does the Prince cancel the spy's ability?". I'm just wondering why you would think it would (that might help me better understand your question if I can understand where you're coming from).
The Spy card says "if you are the only player who has played or DISCARDED the Spy". So when the Prince card says "the player DISCARDS their hand", yes, you get the favor token at round end (if you're the only one with the Spy in front of you). Had the same question at one stage.
Nice video! If I have the princess and a guard, and play the guard to name a card of an opponent, that he has the princess to confuse him, is this allowed? Thanks!
Hey Its appear that a hebrew edition of the 2nd edition is coming out! So i came to see the video... i think you have a tiny mistake at 0:57. If you play a two player game, the extra 3 cards are not a secret. Also- the flip. Wowww
@@WatchItPlayed thanks. The extra 3. We love this game in our house very much. We have the regular version, the deluxe one, and i thought about getting the 2nd edition, now that i saw its translated, i will do it for sure.
Hey there, I'm not sure I understand your question, but it may be that you don't understand how the princess works. It's hard for me to know how to answer this question because I can't tell that you understand and don't understand. Perhaps it would help you to watch the portion of the video about the princess and Prince again.
@@WatchItPlayed thanks, i understood from the video that you play a card in front of you and resolve it’s ability. The princess’s ability takes you out of the round. The prince forces another player to play a card in their hand but as you stated at 4:05 you don’t resolved cards ability when the prince forces you, however, a few seconds later in your video you point out how strong the prince is because you could force a player player to play the princess and drop out if the round. So the question is do you or don’t you resolve an ability when the prince forces it out of your hand, if not than you should not drop out if you have the princess in hand.
@@wondermot2780 When you are forced to discard a card by the Prince's ability, you do not resolve it. This is it's general rule. However, it is important to note the wording on the Princess card specifically. It says "If you play 'or discard' her", you are out of the round. ruclips.net/video/RiQ2To5KWJM/видео.html Hope that helps!
Hey Geo, I avoid giving personalized recommendations like that. What one person enjoys at 2 players, another may not, so I just don't try to guess at that for someone else. Hopefully the video can help you understand how it plays though!
I have a question about the Spy: if at the end of the round I'm the only player who played or discarded a Spy, but my opponent had the higher number card, does that mean he won the round but both of us take a token? Or does it mean that I'm the winner?
Having the Spy doesn't win you the round, it just gives you a token, so in the case above, they won the round and gained a token for that, and you gained a token for having the only Spy in the discard. Hope that helps!
i love this game and how intense sometimes it gets...i have both t and 2nd ed copy of the game. now u are telling that 2nd ed is for 5 or more players? or a 3 player game u still play with classic cards?
You can use the new cards in a 3 player game as well, but if you want to, you can play with just the classic cards (but then your game can only be 2-4 players, as there wouldn't be enough cards for 5-6)
I have the 1st edition of this game, and the cards have this problem of splitting in half when I shuffle them, like thier two separate cards being held up with cheap glue, is that a problem with the second edition set?
@@WatchItPlayed What probably happened was a teacher bought a used copy off of Ebay without digging into the seller's history, and I happened to win this bootleg version of the game. As soon as I get the money, I'm buying a replacement copy and throwing out the old one. Everything else looks rather convincing though, almost as if the seller bought a legit copy and used a copy machine to make thier own cards for cheap. I guess I should just be glad I'm not the one who got swindled. There were other games that people competed for, I hope those are legit copies and not fakes like I got.
@@redzgaming6880 It's been a bigger problem in the board game industry than most people realize. Buyer beware when shopping for deals on ebay and even amazon.
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - what I find fun and 2 players, you might not - so I prefer to show the game I hope that helps you decide if it suits your tastes or not.
Bit confused by the spy... technically the only person left in the round at the end of a round is the one that has won the round. So is the person who has won the round the only person able to get the “spy” token?
Being eliminated is different from not winning a round. Every player can get to the end of the round without being eliminated, assuming they are not eliminated before the deck runs out. Then you you would give one favor token to each person who has at least one spy, and one favor token to each player with the highest value card[s]. There is no "technical" elimination because someone won. You just award favor tokens based on the rules.
@@WatchItPlayed Oh ok but it's kinda weird because I have the game in Hebrew and the spy's text says that if you have the spy in your hand or you discarded it, gain a token
Finally! I have been looking all over for this exact answer. So this implies that the final cards in hand are neither “played” or “discarded” but are simply “revealed and compared”…correct? We had a player who got stuck with spy as final card and were confused about whether the final cards that are not highest card received “discarded” status or not.
Two questions: 1. If I play the chancellor, can I place the princess or the countess on the button of the deck? 2. If two players are still "alive" at the end of the round, and they both played the spy, do they both gain a token?
1) Yes. 2) No. in the section of the video explaining the spy, you’ll find that the spy’s effect requires them to be the “only” spy on the table with a player who survived until the end of the round. If 2 players made it to the end and each have a spy, neither get the token.
I don't recall the differences. New art and new roles for sure, but you can play the original version with this set as well. Perhaps this article would help? www.zmangames.com/en/news/2019/4/5/new-faces-love-letter/
NOTE: When playing a 2 player game, the 3 extra cards you set aside, are placed face UP on the table.
If you play with the original variant (remove cards for 2-4 player), do you still put one face down and three others face up?
@@warholcow Can you help me know what you mean by the "original" variant?

Thanks John!
Glad you liked it!
Excellent video.
Love the video Rodney. PS sorry if I miss spelt your name.
You got it right!
A question: if player A plays the "Prince" and a player "B" discards the Spy, will this Spy give 1 coin to the player B in the end of the game if a player B is only 1 person with a Spy? Basically the question is if the Prince discarding keeps the other's player Spy property active after discarding it
Thank you in advance!
Yep!
My bad... :)
If it tied when the deck runs out both players get victory or count the total sum of all the cards in front for only one winner?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks.
After drawing cards into your hand from the Countess, you can then discard ANY 2 cards (so you could pick the King).
Got it! Thank you!
I am confused whether to buy the first edition or this one...Which one do you recommend
Since you can play the original version with the new version, I'd recommend the new version.
Hello Rodney, Are you sure that when you discard a card as the prince (5) effect or you loose to the baron(3), you should show your card? I consider myself a veteran love letter player, all the time we kept those cards secret... (face down).
I am sure, but if you can find a rue that says otherwise, please let me know!
Do you know if this is getting a premium edition? My nieces have been enjoying this game and I would like to get them a copy for Christmas.
Hey Frank, I would say this edition is the premium one for now. Not aware of any other versions coming.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks. They are 8 and 10 and are loving it. They were asking about the Queen.
Thanks!
Sure is (and very clever!)
@@WatchItPlayed thanks again!
Hey
Its appear that a hebrew edition of the 2nd edition is coming out! So i came to see the video... i think you have a tiny mistake at 0:57. If you play a two player game, the extra 3 cards are not a secret.
Also- the flip. Wowww
Very true! In a 2 player game, the set aside cards are kept face up. Good catch!
@@WatchItPlayed thanks. The extra 3.
We love this game in our house very much. We have the regular version, the deluxe one, and i thought about getting the 2nd edition, now that i saw its translated, i will do it for sure.
So it is ok to play the Countess card if your other card is the princess? It just throws off your opponent?
Certainly!
In order to be in the round at the end of a round means you won the round. So the spy only works if you win or tie?
You've got it.
When does the 2nd edition release? I can’t find it to buy...
Very soon!
A classic!
Hi Rodney, why if the princess is revealed by the prince do you get knocked out of the round. I thought you have to reveal without using the effect?
@@WatchItPlayed thanks!
Is this good for two players?
You can use the new cards in a 3 player game as well, but if you want to, you can play with just the classic cards (but then your game can only be 2-4 players, as there wouldn't be enough cards for 5-6)
@@WatchItPlayed thanks rodney
I did not think they had updated this.
Happy to provide a surprise!
I have the 1st edition of this game, and the cards have this problem of splitting in half when I shuffle them, like thier two separate cards being held up with cheap glue, is that a problem with the second edition set?
Did you happen to buy your copy online? Sounds like you might have a forged copy.
I have never had problems with card splitting in either edition.
@@WatchItPlayed I won mine in a contest at school a long time ago, I have no idea where they got it from.
@@WatchItPlayed I'll probably wait for this covid crap to go away, because then I can go to my local tabletop gaming store and get a real copy.
Woah... how many times did you flip the game until you caught it?? Or was that first try?
ruclips.net/video/9WXTNh3fsM0/видео.html
What if a player has a contess & prince, can a player discard the prince and remain a contess in their hands?
The Contess says that if you have the Prince you MUST discard the Contess.
Is this game fun with 2 people?
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - what I find fun and 2 players, you might not - so I prefer to show the game I hope that helps you decide if it suits your tastes or not.
Bit confused by the spy... technically the only person left in the round at the end of a round is the one that has won the round. So is the person who has won the round the only person able to get the “spy” token?
there is a chance that there is more than one player when the deck runs out and the second spy card is discarded before the game started
Thanks to Scott for the assist!
More game flips pls
Is this on sale yet?
Not yet, but soon.
So if you are the only player left with a spy card and you win the round you would get two favour tokens?
Correct!
Guys do you think would it br okay it i add chancellor but not the spy
Not sure - haven't tried that.
Rodney ma BOIII!
If I have the spy in my hand at the end of the round, do I gain a token?
You have to have played or discarded it.
@@WatchItPlayed
Oh ok but it's kinda weird because I have the game in Hebrew and the spy's text says that if you have the spy in your hand or you discarded it, gain a token
ירון אפרים Sounds like a translation error
Finally! I have been looking all over for this exact answer. So this implies that the final cards in hand are neither “played” or “discarded” but are simply “revealed and compared”…correct? We had a player who got stuck with spy as final card and were confused about whether the final cards that are not highest card received “discarded” status or not.
Two questions:

Thank you so much!
Wooooow mega fliiiiip!!! :-D
What is new to this version?
I don't recall the differences. New art and new roles for sure, but you can play the original version with this set as well. Perhaps this article would help? www.zmangames.com/en/news/2019/4/5/new-faces-love-letter/

Wow, the second edition looks much nicer and more interesting than the original game.
