    Honestly this is a great overview of the issues the Steam Deck has and Valve should take note and work on these things you've mentioned ASAP. That said, I think the issues will eventually be ironed out. I expect a lot of open source add-ons and creative inventions/mods will get incorporated into future revisions. I expect the wayland subsystem to improve, The further improvement of Proton, advancements in anti-cheat, UI improvements.

      Thank you for your comment! I appreciate you watching the video and I'm glad you found it useful. I do believe that in time valve will create something truly spectacular given their store front. Despite the issues that I had with the steam deck I still am happy that I got it and I do believe that future revisions in terms of software and even hardware will make this a very powerful portable device. I agree with you. 😃

    I say if you are interested in this device - reserve it now and then whenever your wave comes watch the videos made at that time about the deck to see if a lot of issues are fixed. If not, just cancel the reservation and your money will go to steam wallet.

    Great review, it's nice to see someone actually pointing out the good, bad, and ugly about the device... Most of the reviews talk about how they "can't live without it" or it's "changed the way I game forever" with near zero flaws, it's a good device don't get me wrong, but it needs quite a bit of work... And when this device finally hits a average gamer, I suspect the gross over hype will fade pretty quick

      Thank you for watching Deon! I always try to aim for objectivity and keeping my subjectivity to a minimum until the end of a review mostly. Being in this industry for quite some time has shown me a lot of the bigger guys can't exactly be very objective when their review access to hardware and software is dependent on their livelihood. I can do without. Yes the Deck has potential, but its not the golden grail device at all. You most certainly can live without it! 😁🤣

    The VRAM on the Steam Deck is dynamic; it will go a lot higher than 1GB when running a more demanding game.

    • @TechTails
      @TechTails  2 года назад +1

      Yeah apparently it can access 8GB like consoles on a shared vram. I should have mentioned it but I figured no one would get confused and think we're back in 2007! Lol. Thanks for watching:)

    I liked the review seems pretty fair.
    Thanks for the tips on copying games to the SD card and file format (would had loved a bit of footage on that though like a small guide, also on gameplay for some titles. So maybe on future videos).
    About the battery I read / seen a lot of reviews and the situation is kinda mixed. Some found it Okay with their play style, others thought it was a tad short.
    In most cases it seems the primary use case is using it around the house and on relative short commutes.
    The situation is also similar to the Nintendo switch when it first came out the battery was not good.
    Am sure Valve will improve that issue in future iterations. Even if it's first on the higher end models (Since those have been the most on demand).
    Am really excited to see how the software, hardware and support keeps evolving!

      Hi Manny
      Thank you for watching my video! I always try to be fair and cover the positives and negatives objectively as much as possible while giving my subjective opinion towards the conclusions. As for copying games to the SD card in file format it's simply a matter of formatting the SD card to exfat dragging a game's folder to it and then dragging that folder into Arch Linux steam directory SteamApps just like the PC filesystem. This assumes you have internal space. It will verify integrity. :) I probably should have included footage of it but unfortunately ran out of time do so. I agree with you - battery life will probably improve software wise and eventually Steam Deck 2 will fare better. For my style, I play a lot of graphical games, it dies too quick. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out 😊

    I think your expecting a bit too much from battery technology. Gaming laptops last about the same. One of the reviewers ran a web browsing test on the deck and it lasted 9 odd hours. As with a gaming laptop it's going to utterly depend on the demands you put on it. That's why the OS has built in power tuning options to reduce power draw, cap FPS and change the GPU clocks.
    The Switch works as well as it does because its running on a SOC from a phone, but that comes with performance trade offs for battery life. You can't get around physics, it's one or the other.

    • @TechTails
      @TechTails  2 года назад

      Very cool! I would say I expected not much from it and I totally agree with what you're saying. But that was also kind of my point...if its a limitation of battery technology...then maybe the Steam Deck needs a few revisions to its battery to be worth a lot IMHO. I don't think its physics as much as the technology just not being ready. No matter what I did gaming wise...either Indie or Intense graphical, the battery fell painfully short...more so than any gaming laptop I've had.

      @@TechTails Did you use FSR and limit frames to 30 fps? That usually expands battery life for 1 - 2 hours depending on games.

    • @TechTails
      @TechTails  2 года назад

      @@Matruchus i didnt need to limit the fps to 30...it seemed to struggle acheiving that on a fair bit of the games I played. Im sure it extends it...but I hardly found myself trying to cap it. I didnt use FSR as I wanted to gauge actual baseline performance and not upscaled which can skew the reality. I have heard wonderful things about FSR though

    • @Purturtur
      @Purturtur 2 года назад

      What I'd be curious to know is whether you had done the BIOS and software updates before testing games. Because I've seen various channels cover gameplay of games like God of War and Horizon and have no issues with maintaining a 30 fps lock

    valve doesnt have to support the steam deck, i dont understand why people bring that up. its not like sony and the vita or psp, pc games are going to release regardless. therefore valve could stop supporting steam deck today and it wouldnt mean anything to the future of the steam deck

    • @TechTails
      @TechTails  2 года назад

      Goes without saying...but of course when people invest so much in a product, the right thing for a company to do would be to support the product with more value as time goes on. Do they have to? No. Should they? Absolutely or you're usually considered a crappy company. In the case of the Deck...if Valve hopes to shed their horrid support reputation, this would be the time to do it with proper software updates. I'm not sure why you don't understand that concept, lol. But it's not abnormal...

      Woah hey! Loved your channel for Deck related videos. So cool to see your comment here! I find the right touchpad rather flimsy and it constantly clicks if I have to use it to move the mouse a good distance. I find the Steam button was less troublesome but more painful to use, haha. I did without due to it random clicking way too often.
