    Supermodel author here. Some notes:
    - Star Wars Trilogy is very playable in the emulator with a mouse. It ought to be configured for mouse support out of the box but if not, it's easy enough to set up by mapping the analog joystick axes to the mouse.
    - There are many Scud Race ROM sets and you had the misfortune of finding the single one whose 2D graphics layer renders incorrectly :) The most common ROM set runs just fine.
    - At various points in Supermodel's development history, Fighting Vipers 2 has been playable at full speed. I *thought* the latest code runs it correctly but it may be necessary to tweak the emulation clock frequency, which is deliberately under clocked by default in order to improve performance for most games running on older PCs. A few games require accurate clocking and it's possible FV2 is one of them. The actual hardware ran at 100 MHz and I believe Supermodel defaults to something like 50 MHz.

      BartTrzynadlowski Thank you for the time and effort you’ve put into working on Supermodel. Finding out that Model 2 & 3 emulation is decent is what led to me recently picking up a PC. Just waiting on the Sinden Lightgun now.

    • @trzy
      @trzy 4 года назад +7

      I forgot to mention that the flickering cars in Sega Rally 2 are also due to the PowerPC frequency being too low. Bumping it up over 100 MHz should fix it.

    • @MrDukeeeey
      @MrDukeeeey 4 года назад +1

      I tried an actual star wars arcade machine and the inverted controls made my head spin :p Someone 'fixed' the 2d bug in the japanese version of scud with a sort of code cheat program that patched the memory of the emulator. Just changed a 1 or 0. But I couldn't figure out what the address actually changed to try and fix it properly in emulation. Maybe worth a look at ? :)

      @@NB-1 Naomi's PowerVR chipset was more powerful than Model 3's overall and far more versatile. The CPU was comparable to Step 2.0 (SH-4 200MHz vs. PowerPC 603 166MHz) but Naomi had far more RAM. I think there's no question that it was a far more capable system.

    Fantastic video, Kim. Brings back a ton of memories. I had a Sega arcade near me in the 90's, and I only ever went on the free play days where you'd pay a fiver to get in and all the machines were free vend. I remember playing a great many of the games in this video, it was an amazing experience and a very special era of gaming. The only problem with free play days is the arcade is always packed and you'd be waiting ages to get on some games. Daytona USA always seemed to have all eight players constantly, and there was always a big queue for Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Tekken 2. Virtua Fighter was never all that popular, and I wasn't a fan either so that machine was often available.
    I mostly played the shooting games, HotD, Gunblade NY, Virtua Cop, Time Crisis. Gunblade was especially fun on free play days cause you could play 2-player on your on and have a gun in each hand, without it costing a fortune. VOOT was my absolute favourite though, holy hell was that game amazing with the big screen and dual stick controls. The machine was never hugely popular but I loved it and played it an absolute ton. Easily the arcade game I've spent the most time with.
    I feel privileged to have grown up in this era, when arcades were a thing and they were a step above anything you could get at home. If you were a gamer in the 90's, going to an arcade and playing these incredible games was almost a religious experience. I hate to be all "you had to be there" but, yeah..

      Those 3 killer apps sold Sega Saturns like no tomorrow. Nothing could stand up against Sega Rally back in those days, it's just unfortunate that there were ZERO racing games that followed up and continued the flag bearing. Heck, for example, look at Sega Touring Cars Championship. That was a 1st party game, released much after Sega Rally, and, graphically, the game was an absolute disaster and the team had zero excuses. In fact, it's Sega Japan's fault. Unlike Sony, they didn't make sure that they shared their incredible VF2 and Sega Rally engines to everyone else in their own department let alone externally (baring Dead or Alive, which was Yu Suzuki's decision with Tecmo boss at the time). For that major mistake, the Saturn suffered BADDDDDDDDDDDLY as no other games quality-wise followed up. Thanks, Sega.

    There are really good ports of Gunblade NY and it's sequel on the Wii. I actually have a separate room set aside in our house for older games like the Colecovision and our 2 player arcade set up. All our light gun games for systems like the Saturn and PS1 are here,hooked up to a 32 inch CRT Sony TV. My 10 year old niece loves playing games like Virtua Cop 2, House of the Dead 2 and Elemental Gearbolt with the light guns. It's as close to an arcade as you can get without the actual arcades. Playing those games with good light guns is the best way to play them. Sadly I don't have a PC and have no desire to learn anything about emulators and the complex process of getting them to work. I'll stick to the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Hopefully some of the lesser seen arcade games here will see releases like Virtua Racing got on the Switch.

Set it to 65% or higher and it runs with no glitches at full speed. Do not set it too high tho or the performance cost will be too severe. 65%-70% is a good tested range.

    great rundown of the Model 1->3 games, but at 2:20 how could you not mention how Sega DIDN'T develop the Model-2 or Model-3 hardware entirely in-house?
    Lockheed Martin is an American global aerospace, defense, security, and advanced technology company. It was formed in 1995 after a merger between Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta.
    A spin-off company from Lockheed Martin, Real3D, specialized in 3D graphics chip technology. Real3D designed graphics chips for the Sega Model 2 and Sega Model 3 arcade systems.
    Sega enlisted Lockhead Martin's "Real3D" technology for the entire basis of the main Sega Model-2 and Model-3 processors, not only that, GE Aerospace Simulation & Control Systems Department (GE/SCSD) practically prototyped what would become "Daytona USA" for Sega and presented it to Sega as a Demo for what Real3D could do. Martin Marietta even sponsored the Sega Model 2 arcade game, Desert Tank.
    FTA:
    _Near the end of 1990, we asked our demo group to model the Daytona International Speedway(r), which was conveniently located across the street from our facility. To that geometrically correct model, we added a couple of Formula One race cars with reasonably good vehicle dynamics that you could "drive". This whole thing ran in real-time, at 60 frames per second, with about 6,000 polygons per frame, on 1M pixel displays, on a Compu-Scene PT2000 image generator which sold for about $1.5M. We made a cool looking video tape with music and sound effects and hit the road._
    _We visited Sega in November of 1990. At that time, all Sega's arcade games were based on sprites. They happened to be developing their very first polygon-based graphics system, which they called Model One. Model One was pretty crude by today's standards, but at the time it was pretty good. By comparison, it looked a lot like the Compu-Scene systems from the Apollo Space Program days, except that it went into a $15K arcade games instead of a multi-million dollar simulator. We showed Sega our video tape which demonstrated real-time, trilinear texture filtering, shading, and a host of other 3D graphics features and they became very interested in the GE technology._
    _To make a long story shorter, GE/SCSD was interested in adapting its Compu-Scene technology to non-military markets and Sega was very interested in improving the graphics quality of its arcade games._

    One correction: Spikeout was released on the Xbox in the US as Spikeout: Battle Street. It was just a very small print run, but I got it from GameStop when it first came out and still have my copy.

    33:52 It is rumoured that Sega lost the source code to the House Of The Dead 1 which is why it has never had a proper port / HD update.

      Sega had crazy issues with HDD failures. Working Designs had to practically reprogram Magic Knight Rayearth because Sega of Japan gave them scraps of the original source code.

    Ah, 90's VR.
    What gets me, aside from the retroactive realisation that the hardware simply wasn't there in the 90's, is why the attempts were so awkward.
    Like, OK, the arcade systems make sense - both the headsets and the computers needed to power them would have been scarily expensive in the early 90's.
    Side note, why we have VR now is a side effect of someone figuring out a MUCH cheaper way to make headset optics - As much as people complained about the $600+ VR headsets, what they don't seem to appreciate is that these are to a standard that even a decade earlier would have cost $10,000 to $100,000 for the headset alone. - The other major factor can be blamed on that whole motion control thing.
    No, not the motion controllers used with VR, though they add a lot to the experience.
    No, the ability to track the position and orientation of a VR headset accurately and with low latency.
    Low latency head tracking is THE thing that makes VR work; It's not the stereoscopic stuff.
    It's not modern 3d graphics (face it. VR would've been possible with wireframe 3d).
    Nope. It's a thing called 'closing the loop', which is essentially the psychological consequences of having a screen strapped to your head where the virtual scene updates in time with your head movements.
    Anyway, so... We'll ignore the arcare stuff for the moment.
    But ask yourself this;
    Why did Sega think it would be a good idea to make a VR headset for the Mega Drive of all things!?
    And why...
    WHY does the virtual boy have hardware powering that can't even do SuperFX level 3d graphics? Seriously?
    You build a VR headset, and you can't even give it the ability to run the equivalent of Starfox?
    It's pretty obvious that the sane thing for Nintendo to do at the time (which likely still would have failed, but would at least have made sense) would be to build a VR headset compatible with the nintendo 64.
    That would've at least stood a change of having enough 3d performance to make the whole thing sort of work. (likely not though. You need high framerates and accurate, low latency tracking or all you end up with is nausea.)
    So Sega tries to add VR to a 2d system.
    Nintendo builds a 2d VR 'portable'' yet ignores the far more sane option of making it an add-on to a 3d system...
    What WERE these companies thinking of!?

    The biggest problem with virtua striker is the camera...wayy too close, you dont see where you pass, or if someone going to tackle you. but it for sure has its charm still.

    I personally think VF3/tb is far better game than VF1 and VF2.
    3 is the first VF to actually have well balanced roster.
    Not to mention it's the most unique in the series.
    Not only it is considered a high note in the series by Japanese fans but it's actually still being played at lot at Japanese arcades right now. "It's basically as popular as SFIII third strike at JP arcades"
    Mikado arcade and a-cho arcade upload weekly tournaments livestreams on their youtube channels.
    Don't get me wrong 1 and 2 are still great especially the arcade versions.

    Very interesting you seemed to not get Top Skater or Water Ski to a control scheme you were comfortable with. Both feel perfectly fine to me just playing with a keyboard. Granted, i wouldn't have any experience with any smaller intricacies that come with playing on their og hardware that's lost through emulation. But as a newbie, both feel great just using arrow keys and the 2 buttons needed for tricks in both. I think they'd make for good ports on a standard controller, should Sega feel like preserving more of their arcade stuff to be played in modern day.
    Also Sonic the Fighters is great and the larger Sonic cast is awesome, that critique for the series as a whole was always annoying. No shade to you specifically, just triggered memories of late 00's internet bullshit lol

    Games look a little different than the arcade, the emulator seems to be using anti-aliasing, different filtering effects and things... The original arcades just didn't look as smooth and clear, somehow I would prefer those jadged edges and course looking textures, helps bring back those memories.
