Ahh, I enjoyed the crap out of this one. And the last one too because Sega arcade stuff is just lovely, but I mean, this one in particular struck a chord! I've been collecting ST-V motherboards and cartridges in recent months and the whole system intrigues me to no end. There *is* something special about those generic gray cartridges.

Are you going to continue your arcade videos after getting done with Sega's stuff? Taito, Namco or SNK deep dives would be excellent.

    Fantastic video as always!!
Fun fact: Some if these games unplayable on MAME are now very playable using the RetroArch Kronos core. Lots if messing to do with BIOS files, but worth it for some of these treasure! Plus some awesome enhancements too!

I bought an old ST-V cabinet (aka Die Hard Arcade probably) in March maybe? Put my old motherboard in and the thing is awesome. As a cartridge collector who sold/traded in their old CD-type games this was an awesome way to play the Saturn. Sure it doesn't have NiGHTS etc but it has Radiant Silvergun!

I probably shouldn't be surprised the Hanafuda footage looks almost identical to how the game is presented in the Yakuza series as a minigame. Both being Sega and all.

Glad to see Batman Forever at No.15 as well as Radiant Silvergun only getting to 12 as while it's pretty and technically amazing, the gameplay didn't grab me as much as I hoped when I finally got round to playing it.
Was hoping for Soukyugurentai to be higher on the list mind you and oh, where was "Astra Superstars"?

Fantastic video as always Kim, whenever I see that one of these goes live I drop everything and watch it.
As a huge Sega fan I may be biased but I feel like the ST-V is incredibly under-rated. Back when I had a larger house and more space to myself I owned quite a few arcade machines, including some all time classics, but I must admit the ST-V got some of the most play, over much more famous and revered machines. That's perhaps unsurprising when you consider it can play multiple games, but I also ownd an MVS and whilst its sacrilidge to say so, I actually probably totalled as many hours on the ST-V as I did on the NeoGeo.
To me, as a huge Saturn fanboy, to have an arcade machine that played some of my favourite games with no loading times and with proper microswitched controls and a perfect CRT was too good to pass up - and as you pointed out, they are CHEAP to pick up, especially compared to a Model 1 or 2 board, or even the Saturn versions of some of the games.
I owned Radiant SilverGun, Die Hard Arcade, Baku Baku Animal, Steep Slope Sliders, Decathalete, Winter Heat, Virtua Fighter Remix and Virtua Fighter Kids. I always wanted Final Fight Revenge and Puyo Puyo Sun but sadly never saw them appear on eBay for the relatively short time I owned the machine. As a massive fan of 2d shooters and fighters, in the future when I innevitably cave and buy another system, Cotton 2, Boomerang, Shienryu, Soukyugurentai / Terra Diver, Guardian Force, Groove On Fight & Astra Superstars. I had no idea multicarts existed, now I'm even more tempted to get one as the convenience of not swapping carts would be amazing.
I'm really glad you enjoyed Baku Baku Aniaml, I'm slightly surprised you hadn't heard of it, I remember first learning about the Saturn version on TV in the 90s - I feel like it was Bad Influence, but possibly not, I need to get round to re-watching all of them. Could have been something less inspiring, like "Movies Games and Videos" or the like. As a kid watching on TV I remember thinking it didn't really "use the power" of the new sparkly 32-bit system... but then when I got a Saturn a year or two later and it was on a demo disk, I was instantly hooked, and ran right out and bought a copy. The Saturn version is exactly the same as the arcade game as you may imagine, and came out in PAL territories. Sega also released a Windows 95 PC version which has network multiplayer. There is also a perfectly competant GameGear conversion, which was converted to Brazillian Master System TecToy release too!

I didn't see Tecmo World Cup 98 here, this would be a nice addition to the Saturn library, but stayed in the Titan board. Could've easily made a 1:1 port and is possibly on par, if not better than Worldwide Soccer 98.

watching these arcade game list videos has me thinking- wouldn't a curated list of favourites and notable games rather than every single one be more fun for you to make? some of these games are obviously ones you don't care about (which is fine) but it feels like you force yourself to play all of them, even if there are serious emulation problems (Rad Mobile in particular in the System 32 video plays completely fine on cab but has notoriously difficult-to-configure controls in MAME, something you attribute to the game itself rather than the emulator) and as you say, Saturn emulation is very spotty, and ST-V is still wildly inconsistent in MAME. i dunno, it just seems like a lot of extra work to have all the 'chaff' at the bottom of the list, and having a smaller list would allow you to talk more at-length with each game.

Kim!!! You are the arcade master!!! I absolutely adore these arcade focused videos. I’ve been hooked on mame for almost 20 years now and I’m still finding games through these videos that I never knew existed. Thank you so much for the time and effort you’ve put into this content.

Tecmo world cup 98 is a great arcade soccer game,60fps fast paced action and high resolution, a shame it wasnt released on Saturn and a shame its not yet complete emulated on Mame.
FYI, SSF japanese Saturn emulator has STV emulation too.

This made me wonder, wasn't Funky Headed Boxers originally meant for some kind of photo-booth cabinet, where the players take pictures of their 'fight face', 'punch face' and 'pain face' and these get superimposed onto the models for a round of the game?

  • @arttu76
    @arttu76 4 года назад +1

Sea Bass Fishing & Funky Head Bozing are actually great fun! Maybe it’s because you’re not playing these on proper hardware? Sad to see fun games given a bad reputation because of bad emulation :(

Golden Axe:The Duel just makes me wish Sega had done or ever does a proper fighting game with their franchises, Fighters Megamix just didn't really go far enough.
An EVO worthy fighting game with Virtua Fighter, Yakuza, Streets Of Rage, Sonic, Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Sonic and characters from other Sega franchises would be AMAZING and something that would easily sell and be more popular than, say, another Virtua Fighter game or even something silly like another Sonic fighting game.

Fun to see you do this retrospective for ST-V. It's an interesting board with a decent amount of quality titles. Some of these I still need to play. I've never gotten into Cotton before, though I should do that some time. I'm more familiar with Shienryu via its Playstation port, renamed Gekioh. The PS1 is a good port, even if it's not as good. But that's a really good one and it definitely has that Toaplan feel. I was just playing Groove on Fight a bit last October. I have had the Saturn version since it was new, as I wanted to give a wacky fighting game a go, along with the tag mechanics. I still enjoyed it quite a lot after all these years. Despite the 1-megabyte RAM cart, there are quite a lot of cuts to the Saturn version, so the ST-V version is a better version, aside from maybe options and features. But I agree, it's good, and the end boss is nasty, in an SNK kind of way. Perhaps, even worse. Princess Clara Daisakusen is another one I ended up enjoying quite a bit.

I think your fishing puns *reely* *fly* with me. Side note...I can't wait until you do the Naomi stuff. Dolphin Blue is such an amazing game to me...like if the team at Irem that went on to found Nazca made a wonderful hybrid of In the Hunt and Metal Slug.

The sega saturn (and this board then, I imagine) rendered 3D as quads rather than the more convenient triangles that became the industry standard. That may have made 2D super easy (rendering it in orthographic 3D and using a quad per sprite) but it made 3d wonky, with a lot of degenerate quads standing in for triangles. One of the many things that made the saturn super annoying to develop for.

That Outlaws game had a unique gimmick that allows the fighters to fight bare-handed, and they get new special moves and a chain combo system as well. The Fuun Saki version on Saturn is more fun, with added balance tweaks and 2 characters, Mizoguchi and Yungmie from Fighters' History

Wow, I'm gobsmacked that Kim dismissed Radiant Silvergun like that. No mention of it being the best looking SHMUP on any console from the time (the final boss is incredible stuff), or its current ludicrous market value. Nope, just brushed it aside like a footnote.

As someone who was in speech therapy for years, you really need to work on pronouncing your "TH"s. Thhhhh, thhhhhhh. Keep pronouncing the start of the word The only changing the last sound to be more like an e or an a or o. The, tho, tha, thaaaaaa, theeeeee, thoooooo, and keep trying to stretch the initial TH sound. And don't just drop the sound altogether when it is in the middle of a word like "although" and "otherwise" and "altogether".
Also your R's drop sometimes and you make a W sound. (upon further watching you do it constantly).
