@@orderofmagnitude-TPATP It's tremendous on both. It's one of those games that don't grab people in on first glance, you've got to sit down and play it for a while before it really clicks. Never makes these lists it seems, goes totally under the radar. In that way it's like Gain Ground on the Mega Drive, although a totally different actual type of game of course!
I grew up playing a ton of master system games in the 90s and 00s but Phantasy star and Dragon's trap I didn't notice these games till 2013 and 2018. I called my best friend up in 2013 about this 2nd Wonder Boy 3 game called Dragon's Trap and he got hyped and came over to my house (he left his job early btw) we played this game for hours on my Wii Virtual console and we were just stuffing down pizza and fruit soda XD... we felt like kids playing a game that was new to us at the time. in 2018 I bought Phantasy star 1 on Wii Virtual Console just one hour before nintendo shut down the feature of buying wii points. I called my bud up again and told him about this game and the Dragon's Trap remake. He traveled across the UK to come to my old house, stay over for an entire week and play these two games and many others. Just recently he started playing Dragon Quest games because I wouldn't stop talking about them for like a decade now XD and we love RPGs but sadly we can't always get round to playing them :(. Infact in 2019 my friend is going through a very harsh time and what keeps him happy is playing these games I introduced him to and he's moved close to my old house so we can meet more often.
Fantastic list filled with lots of amazing nostalgia but there is one HUGE omission for me. Psycho Fox has got to be on this list and it’s my favourite platformer on the Master System by far. What a game that was!!!

Castle of Illusion, The Donald Duck games, The Smurfs, The Asterix games... Master System excelled in these kind of cartoon platformers more so than the NES. And most of them are missing from the list. Land of Illusion is here but i wonder why all the others aren't.
The SMS1 was my very first console and turned me into a hardcore SEGA fan! ♥ I was addicted to Psychic World, Hang-On, Wonderboy, California Games and even Rocky! Thanks for this 'tribute' video! It was beautiful!
The Ninja was great with good music. I wish they would release a master system sega compilation for current consoles instead of constant mega drive ones.
Great video. Wonder Boy on the Master System was the first video game I ever owned, so it will always have a soft spot for me. But I had most fun with Rastan on this console...it was just such an excellent port. Another favourite was Chase H.Q.
Very first console I bought myself as a kid using paper round money from my mams catalogue... used go to a car boot sale every Sunday to pick up games, if no luck there was a game shop across the road lol.. use to love a game called dead angle, spent hours playing it with my dad, operation wolf, obvs sonics and another fave was 007 the duel and batman returns guilty pleasure.... SORRY FOR GOING ON, THIS VID HIT MY NOSTALGIA SPOT
I've only been looking into this console library for a few years now, but I've loved just about everything I've come across so far. You covered lots of great games, but if I had to add any, I'd put Psychic World and the Asterix games on there as well. SpellCaster was also a ton of fun. Thanks for a comprehensive list!
I'll never understand how an unfunny, boring, seanbaby stealing dipshit like the AVGN has millions of subs but dr sparkle has like fucking barely 8k. Chrontendo/turbo/sega are amazing.
Thank you SO MUCH for this trip down memory lane! My favorite game of all time wasn't on the list, but I've never met anyone else who's even played it; Penguin Land! Do you remember that one? Tbh I was waiting for Penguin Land all the way to Number One 😂
Even though I grew up with the SMS (me and my brothers pooled our money to get one), Its funny to me to hear that every SMS fan would put Phantasy star at number one when I have to say I never played it back in the day or really feel compelled to do so now. It was the like of lucky Dime Caper, Asterix, Sonic 1 (and 2) or even Impossible Mission or Taz-Mania that I would go for first.
Phantasy Star is available in a "Sega Ages" release version, which offers "quality of life" improvements that make it more playable today. It's available on the Nintendo Switch, not sure of other systems. I played it on my friend's SMS back in the day, and been obsessed with it ever since. Any Sega Master System game list that doesn't include it is illegitimate in my eyes.
As a life long Sega fan, I really love yoyr videos about all things Sega. You and Daniel Ibbertson truly go above and beyond when making these vids. Thanx! 👍🏻☺️
Totally agree with you about the soundtrack of Phantasy Star - it is the greatest for any 8-bit system indeed! Also, it's my very favorite game of the SMS. I loved to see Kenseiden and The Ninja as well. I missed Asterix, though... I think it's a lovely game, actually. Maybe Psychic World should have been remembered, but I prefer the MSX version. And great justice you gave to Compile! It's the best third-party developer for the SMS definitely.
My top 10 is probably (in no real order): Sonic Choplifter Mickey Mouse: Land of Illusion Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap Golvellius (Tied with Dragon's Trap for my number 1.) Ninja Gaiden (I agree it doesn't touch the NES games but it's a high caliber platformer for the Master System.) Fantasy Zone 2 Kenseiden Rastan R-Type (My favorite contemporary port of the game.)
Zillion mnemonic: With the exception of 3 symbols, every symbol looks like its corresponding digit pushed up against a mirror. The exceptions are 4, which is that harp/U symbol; 8, which is an 8 turned on its side, and 0, which is, well, a 0.
Favorite game Fantasy Zone II. Bought the Sega 3D collection for the 3Ds just to have that on the go. The Ninja is great. The arcade version is Ninja Princess. For some reason they changed the main character to male for the home release.
I couldn’t help but laugh when you mentioned the annoying sound Alex makes when he kicks it, as my first thought (being snarky in a friendly way) “so stop dying!” LOL! The Dreamcast is my favorite system, Master System would be #1 just for Phantasy Star! Oh my stars! Phantasy Star 1 is epic. My brother and I played it through at least 15 times! Half together as kids, half as adults! We cherish what we call “The Yellow Folder”, which contains graph paper, step by step maps of EVERY dungeon we made by hand! As well as all character max stats, weapons they can or can’t use, every tiny town or big city with every shop’s items, weapons, cost and effectiveness. There’s a cave on Dezoris with nothing but White Dragons- the ultimate place to “grind levels” (according to the old, free SEGA tip phone line! They sent us a *free* walkthrough! By mail, a huge packet of papers, because it was SEGA and our first RPG! We fine-tuned it, added the dungeon maps that weren’t in the packet. I remember so clearly telling my brother “It says Alys gained a level, but nothing looks any different! What?” That yellow folder is in my safe keeping at the moment, but my brother and I still trade it. It’s a HUGE part of the game for us! That game really helped us bond. And the dungeons have NEVER been outdone! Visually, perfect! The best way to make a 3D maze confusing is to make every bit of it look identical! Screw “overhead dungeon maps” where you can even see enemies before they attack! That’s for losers!!! Phantasy Star meant every single step you took could start a battle you DIE IN. No warnings on attacks! No warning (unless you know how to use the right spell at the exact right step in a dungeon) of “Pit Traps”! You can be 9 floors up a tower, take ONE wrong step and be dropped 1-8 levels lower again without any option but to redo it! Best game ever! I refuse to play any version with textured walls or mini-maps! That’s for Final Fantasy wimps!
Great memories... Zillion, Wonder Boy, Kung Fu Kid, Black Belt, Kenseiden, Alien Syndrome, My Hero, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, the Ninja, Shinobi, even Rocky! My favourite was Space Harrier
I owned a Master System 2 and a NES and preferred the NES, I remember the games I played more. The only game I really remember is an Asterix game, very good.
You should really give Star Wars a go. Its varied quality gameplay , licensed and published by U.S. Gold, but better in spite of that. its almost the same as the Nes version, true, but thats a classic as well.
Loved the 'idiot' rating ;-). This is an excellent list Kim and thanks for taking the time to do this! I literally just re-hooked up my Megadrive and plan to play both SMS and Megadrive games in the coming months!
Great list as always Kim, and here are some more recommendations.... Ghouls And Ghosts, Asterix, Asterix And The Secret Mission, Star Wars, Prince Of Persia, Bubble Bobble, Alien 3, T2 The Arcade Game, Sagaia, Aerial Assault, The New Zealand story, Speedball 2, Batman Returns, Super Monaco GP, Chuck Rock 2, Cloud Master, Aladdin, Golden Axe, Deep Duck Trouble, Psychic World.
I'm super happy to see The Ninja and Alex Kidd so high but I'm surprised that Aztec Adventure isn't on the list,it's a hidden gem for sure but I can't argue with the list as there are so many worth while games here
I've had no first-hand experience with this system; I have to say though that _graphics-wise_ it blows pretty much everyone else out of the water. Really impressive.
Great list, really enjoyed this one. Great to see all my favourites and lots that I never played. For me, the Master System provided the closest arcade conversions when the Arcade used to be king, so there are lots of nostalgic buttons get pressed with these games 😊. Nice work 👍🏻
I appreciate the thought and effort you put into this video. Just the right amount of footage and narration for each game (50 was a lot to take on). Great job.
Being in Canada, the secondary market is the best of both worlds (also having a lot of Portuguese immigrants helps with the SMS). I found a SMS in a Portuguese junk shoppe for 8 dollars, and managed to build a collection including Cyborg Hunter, Sonic 1, several phaser games (including 2-player Gangster Town), Lost Stars, Dragon's Trap, etc.
Totally agree with The Ninja. LOVED that game on the MSII - and I never knew about pressing the two buttons either. I just played it SO much and mastered it despite the lack of control knowledge. XD
Fantastic choice and No.1 is too right. My all time favourite games like X-Beyond The Frontier (Incredible Game, Elite was spanked senseless by XBF), Skies of Arcadia, Cities Skylines, Forza 7 were later than this beauty called Phantasy Star. Wow many hours of map making relaxation and challenge. Great List superb and so glad you got Parlour Games and Casino Games in there. You forgot Shanghai (Mah Jong tile matching game)..
I wish I was able to play the Master System back in the day when it was current. I would have been the right age for it and with a bit of help from nostalgia I'd probably have more patience to give it's games a fair chance. That being said I'll def be checking some of these out, nice to have a large list of good recommendations.
I have most of these. The one thing I wish is that Master System games were available for Antstream Arcade. Plenty of Mega Drive games, but nothing by SEGA that I can find. Not even their Arcade games. I'm MarkMSH there.
I've a fond spot for both Battle Out Run and World Grand Prix - I'm probably alone in both of those, but they are both fun racers for their own reasons. Otherwise most of my personal picks are here, so it's a great list for sure! For modern stuff, I'm quite a fan of Flight of Pigarus - a homebrew Caravan shooter which may not be up there with both Power Strike games, but is quite a fun challenge for a short burst of play.
Rastan, Outrun and a few other Master System conversions have a more weighty, balanced feel to them than other conversions. Long live the Master System.
Surprised not to see Spellcaster. Phantasy Star still holds up, I played through all four a couple of years ago, my first time finishing any of them. It held its own. Alex Kidd...I know people have a lot of nostalgia for it, but I just can't see the gameplay as being great because of the wonky hit detection. The hit boxes in that game were just not well thought out. I tried to get through it when it was released on the PS3 and just moved on after a while.
Pretty good list. The order was a bit all over the place but it's not missing much that I would consider essential. Mine would look something like this: Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap/Monster World II Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Power Strike II Alex Kidd in Miracle World Bubble Bobble/Final Bubble Bobble Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa R-Type Ninja Gaiden Zillion Sonic the Hedgehog Kenseiden Golvellius: Valley of Doom Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Shinobi Jurassic Park Alex Kidd in Shinobi World Asterix Fantasy Zone Power Strike/Aleste Enduro Racer (JP) Legend of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse Micro Machines Phantasy Star Star Wars Sonic Chaos Master of Darkness Wonder Boy in Monster Land Lucky Dime Caper Road Rash Wonder Boy Golden Axe Warrior Slap Shot Penguin Land Rastan Gangster Town Psycho Fox Renegade Solomon's Key Montezuma's Revenge OutRun 3-D Space Harrier 3-D Choplifter! The Ninja Astro Warrior Cyborg Hunter OutRun Rambo: First Blood Part II/Ashura Space Harrier Spellcaster Ys 1, After Burner, Black Belt or Deep Duck Trouble
A pretty good list Kim. I personally would have given Space Harrier the old heave-ho in exchange for Special Criminal Investigation and there would have definitely been a Top 10 spot saved for Castle of Illusion, but that's just my own nostalgia.
Awesome vid... absolutely loving the sms lately, just gone through my collection and have set up a console to experience it all. Really enjoyed this vid 👏
Back in the day I used to play "Global Defense" on the SMS...I managed to complete it, but couldn't manage to get the penguins to dance at the end of the level once I got to the asteroid belt - too much stuff going on at that point. I also managed to complete "Thunderblade".
2 years later, but I'm really enjoying this top 50. BTW, the R-Type was so GREAT principally because Compile did the conversion, and few people know how to squeeze SMS like them
You skipped the sword upgrade in the second stage of kenseiden! I remember doing that when I played the game the first few times and the first boss at the end of this stage is almost impossible without it hahah, good old 8bit game difficulty there
My favourites growing up were (in no particular order) Donald Duck - Lucky Dime Caper, Sonic Chaos, Asterix, Robocop vs Terminator, Safari (safari hunt?), Aladin, New Zealand Story and Rainbow Islands.
I've only played one game from the top 3, spent hundreds of hours on that game. In 1991 someone gave me it and told me to put the nut in the Laconian pot and that was the only clue I had as a 12yr old figuring the game out! It's still one of the games a dip in and out of. Warriors of the eternal sun on the megadrive had a similar feel, another awesome rpg. Always saw golvelious advertised on the foldable master system leaflets but never got round to playing it, Ultima iv and miracle warriors were pretty deep games, and y's is a classic
It went kid kool on nes, then psycho fox on master system then finally magical turbo hat adventure on megadrive, but sprite swapped to decap attack for the western world. All are based on the same game engine.
YES!!! MORE LISTS!!! :D This is really intereresting to me, I grew up with the NES but then me and my brothers moved on to the Genesis / MegaDrive and then we became huge Sega fans. :)
i saw you putting Black Belt at number 13 and i just remembered something. If you play Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise on the PS4, at some point, you are able to find a Sega Mark III (Master System in Japan) in the Wastelands, with a copy of the original Hokuto No Ken that you then can play in your hideout room.
that was so excellent - I love these videos of yours, as your explanations of each game almost always convince me! Hey also, late Master System was popular in Britain, South America AND down here in New Zealand!
@@fordprefect80 yep here in NZ as well, the NES was sold, but NO-ONE at all who I knew had one, same as the SNES. So, Sega is much cheaper to collect here nowadays than Nintendo too.
My gosh this takes me back so many years ago when you used to do such videos, I remember your genesis top game count down, keep it up me lady, you rock...

Oh yeah, the best Asterix game j can think of! (The arcade game looks great, but is way too hard, from memory)
@@samadriel Asterix and the Power of the Gods on the Megadrive is really good as well!
Yup! Asterix was excellent! Played it to death.
Not many people seem to mention Populous which I thought was a brilliant conversion. Also Gauntlet was great.
I was blown away by robocod on the master system. It's nearly exact to the 16 bit counterparts.
Excellent video! The Master System is my absolute favorite console of all time, with the Switch a very close second.
That's an interesting 1 and 2!
The Ninja was my go to game back then. So glad you had it on your list.
I loved The Terminator, Batman Returns, Asterix, Jurassic Park, Moonwalker, California Games, Bart vs the Space Mutants, Rampart :)

Rastan has an amazing third arcade game that plays like a Final Fight game but with more interesting gameplay.
I think I would have to say my fav, of the games I had for my Master System 2 would have to be Asterix.
Always liked Quartet. No one talks about it. One of the few games I could beat in my youth.
Props for mentioning Alex Kidd in Shinobi World. Incredibly underrated and better than the original Shinobi for not being as frustratingly hard.

Two metal kings," wearing jeans and leather, that's manowar's crowd." 😉
Thank you for getting Wonder Boy’s music stuck in my head.
just the name "Wonderboy" gets the Tenacious D song stuck in my head! Damn you, Jack Black!
A few I'm gonna have on my top 50 vid: Mercs, Line of Fire, Jurassic Park
Excellent work Kim thanks for this.
Loved the 'idiot' rating ;-). This is an excellent list Kim and thanks for taking the time to do this! I literally just re-hooked up my Megadrive and plan to play both SMS and Megadrive games in the coming months!
Just awesome...so impressed with your channel
Choplifter, king's quest , bank panic, thunderblade
Time soilders
Great list as always Kim,
and here are some more recommendations....
Ghouls And Ghosts, Asterix, Asterix And The Secret Mission, Star Wars, Prince Of Persia, Bubble Bobble, Alien 3, T2 The Arcade Game, Sagaia, Aerial Assault,
The New Zealand story, Speedball 2, Batman Returns, Super Monaco GP, Chuck Rock 2, Cloud Master, Aladdin, Golden Axe, Deep Duck Trouble, Psychic World.
Love your channel! 🎉
Great job.
Agreed he did it perfectly
Being in Canada, the secondary market is the best of both worlds (also having a lot of Portuguese immigrants helps with the SMS). I found a SMS in a Portuguese junk shoppe for 8 dollars, and managed to build a collection including Cyborg Hunter, Sonic 1, several phaser games (including 2-player Gangster Town), Lost Stars, Dragon's Trap, etc.
Great vid, Kim, a few, obvious gems missing, but you did a better job than I'd probably do.
I believe Alex Kidd the Lost Stars came out both in the arcade and on console in 1989, 3 years after Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
I wish I was able to play the Master System back in the day when it was current. I would have been the right age for it and with a bit of help from nostalgia I'd probably have more patience to give it's games a fair chance. That being said I'll def be checking some of these out, nice to have a large list of good recommendations.
You’re a good person and I really enjoy your videos. Keep going
Man I used to play the hell out of that Ghostbusters game. Even to this day, I still remember how brutal that staircase stage was near the end.
Wow... So many memories flooded my mind when the Wonderboy theme came on.
I have most of these. The one thing I wish is that Master System games were available for Antstream Arcade. Plenty of Mega Drive games, but nothing by SEGA that I can find. Not even their Arcade games. I'm MarkMSH there.
Shinobi for SMS its not a convention but its own game. Great episode.
Flight Pigarus is great fun, and looks absolutely amazing.
@34:34, more like a Ninja Gaiden Clone, It looks like it plays like Ninja Gaiden.
Still looks fun.
Rastan, Outrun and a few other Master System conversions have a more weighty, balanced feel to them than other conversions. Long live the Master System.
Ultima 4. Golvellius. Phantasy Star. Golden Axe Warrior. Wonder Boy 2+3
18:50 I was playing the Mega Drive on of Galaxy Force yesterday and loving it. The music is stellar. I laughed at it back in the day though.
I had Rambo on the 64, darn that Master version looks great though.
Double Dragon on sms was my favorite port!
Pretty good list. The order was a bit all over the place but it's not missing much that I would consider essential.
Mine would look something like this:
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap/Monster World II
Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
Power Strike II
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Bubble Bobble/Final Bubble Bobble
Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa
R-Type
Ninja Gaiden
Zillion
Sonic the Hedgehog
Kenseiden
Golvellius: Valley of Doom
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
Shinobi
Jurassic Park
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Asterix
Fantasy Zone
Power Strike/Aleste
Enduro Racer (JP)
Legend of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
Micro Machines
Phantasy Star
Star Wars
Sonic Chaos
Master of Darkness
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Lucky Dime Caper
Road Rash
Wonder Boy
Golden Axe Warrior
Slap Shot
Penguin Land
Rastan
Gangster Town
Psycho Fox
Renegade
Solomon's Key
Montezuma's Revenge
OutRun 3-D
Space Harrier 3-D
Choplifter!
The Ninja
Astro Warrior
Cyborg Hunter
OutRun
Rambo: First Blood Part II/Ashura
Space Harrier
Spellcaster
Ys 1, After Burner, Black Belt or Deep Duck Trouble
I've been adding MS games on my NES Classic, so this list helps.
Does the Mini have to be fiddled with for this?
my fav is POWER STRIKE 2.
i proudly own it.
I like your intro, it's very early 80s British. It feels nice.
It's from the mid-80s BBC Video intro animation. I remember it from my ancient Doctor Who VHSs!
I was hoping you'd make this video! Thank you so much.
Can't wait to watch it.
BTW, the R-Type was so GREAT principally because Compile did the conversion, and few people know how to squeeze SMS like them
Terrible flicker though, it could get almost unplayable at times. Probably runs better on emulators nowadays though
YESSS been waiting for this one, thanks Kim
In Teddy Boy there are same mustache enemies as in Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
You skipped the sword upgrade in the second stage of kenseiden! I remember doing that when I played the game the first few times and the first boss at the end of this stage is almost impossible without it hahah, good old 8bit game difficulty there
Looking forward to watching this! Always insightful and interesting video’s
My favourites growing up were (in no particular order) Donald Duck - Lucky Dime Caper, Sonic Chaos, Asterix, Robocop vs Terminator, Safari (safari hunt?), Aladin, New Zealand Story and Rainbow Islands.
I think Psycho Fox deserves a mention as well.
Totally agree.. fantastic game!
Yeah was a bit surprised it wasn't there
*The best some say better than Mario 2?!?* 💡
Love your work! Massive support from Norway 😉
Keep up the great work Kim..I absolutely adore your Videos they are top notch!!!
Most of my childhood games are in this list, only missing Psycho Fox and California Games. Nice video.
that was so excellent - I love these videos of yours, as your explanations of each game almost always convince me!
Hey also, late Master System was popular in Britain, South America AND down here in New Zealand!
Big in Australia too. The SMS2 was more popular than the NES here in Australia.
Choplifter, Safari hunt & Aztec Adventure are some of my favorites
Great list and brought back some great memories. Just subbed to your channel. 👏🏻
