  • Well, it's the Super Nintendo. Arguably the greatest Nintendo console of the lot, the one with all the super power. Again, I've picked out many of my favourites over the years -- the best of everything from obscure gems and great Famicom imports to the classics. If Mario or Zelda or anything like that have a chance at the top spot, it's here. Enjoy!

The fact that you're such a big part of the retro gaming sphere, and you haven't completed some of these "essential" titles is so relateable and refreshing. Not everyone has played everything. Not everyone had the same games or consoles. And a game like Chrono Trigger requires a big commitment. Some games fall through the net, and no one should be calling for your gaming license if they do. Nice one, Kim!

    • @retrorystergaming577

Hit the nail on the head there! I still haven't played chrono trigger and the older I get and the less time I have in the day its getting less likely I will get around to it

It is a very special game indeed. When i first played a ROM of it back in the early-mid 2000s the first thing I thought was "this feels like a more grown up smash tv".
And indeed, the devs who ported that arcade classic to the SNES (the defining version in my opinion) also made Shadowrun, and even some of the music sounds very similar!

The spiritual prequel and sequel to Super Smash T.V., which are Robotron 2084 and Total Carnage, respectively, also got SNES/NSFC ports, the latter under its own title and the former under an arcade collection that is called Williams' Arcade Greatest Hits. Both games also got Sega Genesis/Mega Drive ports under the same titles as they appeared on the SNES/NSFC, and Smash T.V. even had a surprisingly good NES/FDS port as well.

I've had many people argue with me that they just weren't a fan of the digitized graphics at the time. Although, I think many people were just burnt out on the use of them after Mortal Kombat popularized it and the style sort of blew up. The art style really has nothing to do with how great the game is, so I never got the argument.

If the slowdown in Super Ghouls n' Ghosts bothers you, you may want to try the version that on Capcom Classics Collection for PS2. I don't know if it was intentionally overclocked or if it's just an emulation issue, but it seriously reduces the slowdown if not removing it entirely - at least on the NTSC version, never played it on PAL.

It appears to be almost a direct cross between FF and LOZ.. I have trouble with the inventory system tho.. I can totally relate to where he implies he loses his place with RPGs.. I do love the genre however

The warbly synth that goes with your intro logo evokes such dread in me. Is it actually from one of those wretched old logos like Screen Gems or is it an original composition?

I'm pretty sure the Hagane blockbuster exclusive thing is just an urban legend, I'm surprised Guru Larry hasn't showed up in the comments to correct you on that lol.

I still remember demons crest being stacked walls deep at the toy shops when i was a wee lad because nobody ever bought it. If only i had bought the whole damn shelve lol.

Lol i was the other way around. I really wanted Super Mario world, but that bundle was re[placed by the sf2 bundle at that time. I eventually learned to like the game and got pretty damn good, but when i finally got my hands on Super Mario world that became my favorite SNES game until LTTP came out. And totally agree on the fist Mario kart being the best. That game just felt right to drive.

If you want to check out another Kirby game, I recommend Kirby's Adventure on the NES. It's very creative and beautiful, and a lot of fun despite the fact that it's not very challenging.

I wish I'd known about Blackthorne back in the day, I would have loved it. I never knew what the difference was between the Megaman and X games, I just skipped hem as I had Megaman on the Nes. I had Actraiser, loved it.

Not enough 16 Bit vertical shooter mini reviews contain references to Robert Palmer these days. Fair play to ya.

Holy shit. The exact same thing always happened to me with FF6. Chrono Trigger on the other hand, I slept like 4 hours total between starting it and finishing.
Edit: F Zero's soundtrack is one of the best of all time

ISS Deluxe was a legendary football game and then PS1 PES and ISS on N64. My Brother and I never touched FIFA again until the PS3 era.

It was the same situation for me with Sim City 2000, I so wanted but would never have the right stuff at home to play it. Then one day I walked into Dixons and they had Sim City 2000 for £49.99. I played it to death and was an amazing port for the SNES. I played it right up to the day I got my PC years later.

@Marcus M, same story here, except I bought my copy of the game through the mail from a video game store in New Jersey, USA (I think), along with some other good shooter games, namely, Darius Twin, Phalanx, Super R-Type, and R-Type III: The Third Lightning (which both Phalanx and R-Type III: The Third Lightning also have GBA ports).

Chrono Trigger is definitely #1 in my opinion. I suppose I'm biased as this game was one of the first RPGs I played on Super Nintendo, outside of LOZ. I feel like it *WAS* a hidden gem, not so much anymore, but hey! still gotta love this game.

Speaking of Horizon Chase Turbo, some of the people that worked on the Top Gear (or, as they most likely called it in PAL regions, for obvious reasons, Top Racer, though, ironically, NTSB-U regions, specifically, the USA, would actually get a version of Top Gear of their own, to mixed reviews) series also did the music for that game, and one of the tracks for Top Gear/Top Racer was actually in the OST of Horizon Chase Turbo.

I'll be honest, I'm surprised Super Mario World wasn't in the top 10, especially considering the time. There was simply nothing quite like it for the first couple of years of the SNES life.
