🔧 How to Install Bike Pedals! | MTB Hack - Tell Pedals Apart & Which Way To Tighten!

- A quick tutorial about how to install bike pedals - how to tell which is the left and which is the right pedal - and how to tell which way to tighten and which way to loosen which pedal! I am using Reverse E-Escape Flat Pedals from @ReverseComponents04
Pedal installation can be easy - if you know which way to tighten which pedal. This mtb hack has helped me remember which pedal is which and which way to turn my Allen key.
1. Check if you need pedal washers on your cranks. When do you need washers and what’s the purpose of washers? Pedal washers protect the surface from damage and ensure a good pedal to crank arm interface. Also, you can influence the Q-factor by using or not using washers.
2. Why grease the thread? It’s advisable to grease pedal threads, as this will prevent corrosion and it will facilitate to install and remove the pedals later. If not greased, the pedal may fuse with the crank arm.
3. How to tell your left pedal from your right pedal? Easy: the left pedal has an indentation on its spindle. It’s an indented line surrounding the spindle or 2 parallel lines around the spindle.
Also, some pedals have a L and R on them 🤓
4. How to tighten the right pedal? Remember: Right right right.
Sit on the right of the bike to Install the right pedal. Insert the suitable Allen (usually 6 or 8 mm) key and turn to the right to tighten.
5. How to install the left pedal? Remember: Left left left.
Take the left pedal and sit on the left side of the bike. Insert the correct Allen key and turn to the left.
Or alternatively use a pedal wrench at the spindle. The direction remains the same.
6. Tighten the pedals to about 35-40nm. That is tight!! Ideally check after the first ride if they are still tight.

Literally the only thing you need to remember is that both pedals screw in the same direction as they rotate while pedaling. Love your videos btw, just discovered your channel.
Thanks a lot, Danilo 🙏🙏
Don’t have to tighten the peddles, just snug them! I love your videos Roxy! My wife will not listen to me but she’ll listen to you!
Oh yes, tightening is super important (as otherwise the thread may brake if they loosen up later) About 8-12 nm usually does the trick, but it’s definitely more than snug 😊
Happy to hear your wife is finding the videos helpful and logical to follow.
Those pedals are so sicky!!!
Any tips to remove stuck pedals?
Absolutely. Let them soak in WD40 over night and then open with a long tool 🙂
Thanks, Roxy for another well-done, informative video. You always help us do and be our best.
Thank you so much, Martin 😍🥰 Have a lovely day!
Whats the purpose of the grease on the threads? Love the videos!
If you join two different metals, there may be contact-corrosion, then it will be very hard to take the pedals off again. 🙂
Happy to hear!
@Roxy's Ride & Inspire oh that makes sense. Thank you Roxy!
Thank you for showing me
You are very welcome. Thank you for commenting!
I did not know about the indent line! Is that true for all brands? Also knowing which way to turn, that’s always confusing; your way is easy. I didn’t know some came with washers.
What kind of stand are you using? I desperately need to get one.
Yes, all pedals have the indent - not all have the R and L marked on it - so the indent is a great help.
Happy to help. I also thought this is a nice mnemonic to remember 💓
Whether you need a washer or not depends on your cranks, not the pedals.
It’s a self made stand 😊😊
Thanks for the helpful tips!
Thank you for the kind comment 😍
