  • Bonanza - Episode 63 - The Secret - Joe is accused of murdering a girl. Her father and brothers want to hang Joe and the Cartwrights race to prove his innocence.
    The Secret
    Director: Robert Altman
    Writer: John Hawkins
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 6 May 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Little Joe Cartwright is hauled into court, accused of murdering a pregnant girl named Mary Parson. The girl's father Jake (Crahan Denton) and her brothers all claim that Mary planned to elope with Joe on the night of her death, which is news to Joe. Helping to tighten the noose around the youngest Cartwright's neck is the prosecution's main witness: Joe's old friend John Hardner (Russell Collins). Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"That pinto horse and lefthanded holster are a trademark for Little Joe Cartwright. In this Bonanza episode a very careful frame is used with those things to get Michael Landon accused of murder.
The victim is a rancher's daughter who was allegedly going out with Landon. All news to Little Joe. The story is a tragedy and the real murderer is some piece pf work.
You'll figure out who it is. Still a good story." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"When Pete, the murdered girls brother, sneaks up behind Ben and Little Joe as they leave their house,Pete threatens them with a gun. Ben wheels around, fires his gun,and nicks Pete. However, you will notice that it appears Ben's gun goes off prematurely, looking like it goes off toward the ground right at a sprawling Little Joe. Whatever charge the film makers used to show smoke coming from the gun when the trigger was pulled,is clearly seen going off early, and it also seems as if Ben was pointing it right at Little Joe. Besides this minor goof, i found the episode to be well written, and very entertaining. I would say that it is very well worth watching." Written by calderone1921 on IMDb.com

Well, she's the one who is closest to the killer, so it makes sense to me that she would, story wise. But hopefully you didn't say that because of the whole diversity/feminism thing. That's a mistake. These shows were created before those philosophies infected the world, and that's one of the reasons why I watch them. They aren't stained by today's dysfunctional outlook on life, and it's refreshing. I'm more appreciative of how Betty May behaved like a lady (low-necklines aside). If you didn't say that because of diversity/feminism, and just said that because it made sense, story wise, then I agree, ignore this and pretend that I'm just happy to see another Bonanza fan.

I don't think he knew precisely: he just donned the disguised in case someone did see him and to keep up the fiction he was Joe. Also, I believe he thought that the Cartwright's as an influential family could further his ambitions once he got Joe acquitted. Because when you get right down to there was no real evidence to convict Joe of the crime. The only way this episode makes any sense is that she must have not seen Joe is a very long time. Remember all of the problems her father mentioned they were having? it is likely they were out working the land all day and only knew about 'Joe' because she told them, but they never actually saw them together. She must have hinted they were getting married hence the trip to see Ben. Jerome and Joe are about the same height and age, but their coloring is different but if she hadn't seen him since they were kids, she could have been fooled into thinking he was Joe. As aptly described in GWTW: a young man wants a good girl to court and a bad girt to have fun with.

While I enjoyed how it played out. If I had been Ben Cartwright I would tell my once thought of friend to never come to the Ponderosa again. Any father that condones allowing himself and his son's to take the law into their own hands is not much of a father. I can understand being upset of his daughter being murdered. But at the same time her lie got her killed and almost an innocent man wrongly executed for a crime he didn't commit.

    • @gracielou1407
      @gracielou1407 2 года назад

She didn't lie: she honestly thought she was dating Joe [ he had the necessary props to convince her] and was killed because she threatened to tell her family about her pregnancy. If the case had gone to trial Joe would have got off because there was no real evidence of foul play plus the possibility of suicide exists if 'joe' refused to marry her. Of course, his reputation as well as well as hers would have been destroyed.

Nope I remember the scene where Joe is leaving the house to be brought in and out of habit he starts putting on his gun and the deputy says "I'll take that" or something like that and walks out of the house with it. I was thinking why would you take his gun to jail, just leave it there. Joe even grabbed it from him just outside the door to defend himself.

  • @rhymereason3449

I'm sure the law was cruder back then... but any decent defense attorney should have been able to totally destroy that witness between him not actually seeing the face of the man, but also the victim's brother threatening him with death (in front of many witnesses) if he didn't testify to his liking.
