i don't know if some of the points below were intentional or not, but for what it's worth, i really appreciate the thoughtfulness colour palette that you picked. spoilers ahead! i feel like in the book, Circe's family, her father and siblings, are often associated with light, bright and warm tones. This is not necessarily because of their character, but more so their heritage and the way that Miller portrays them. When visualizing these characters, you often picture hues of reds, yellows, and oranges-the aureate radiance of Pasiphaë's hair being like the sun on water, or the searing almost-white yellow of Helios's aura. Yet, their actual personalities are so far from the kindness and warmth these colours typically connote. They are cold, calculating, and relentlessly cruel. However, from birth, Circe has always been different from the rest of her family. Yes, though she is still the daughter of Helios and was mentioned to have inherited *some* of his qualities, they were always LESS THAN. Her hair is tainted by streaks of brown, her eyes are an "owlish" yellow (in the words of her sibling's tauntings) and her skin not quite bronze enough. You do not associate the same golden, sun-kissed features with Circe as strongly as you would the rest of her family. Yet, unlike her family and all their literal incandescence, she is not as ruthless and sadistic as them. (Although to be fair, she does indeed have her fair share of cruelties) Even from the very start with Prometheus, you see a gentle kindness in Circe’s actions and an inclination to alleviate the Titan's sufferings. When Hermes tells her tales of the violent deaths of sailors at the hand of Scylla, she shows a strong longing to right her wrongs, ultimately taking the risk to defeat Scylla herself. In my opinion, the brazen juxtaposition between the cool blue-purple tones you picked and the intense colours of her family beautifully illustrates exactly how she is many things her family is not. And I think it is very symbolic that her differences between her and her family are what eventually allowed her to find resolution in her tragedy- her contempt of divinity that her family (from those of Titan blood to the nymphs and naiads) so vehemently treasured. Sorry for the long read. i just really enjoyed the book and wanted to show appreciation for the effort that has been put into both the beautifully put together video and stunning illustration. (:
I absolutely love your interpretation! The blues & indigos were a purely intuitive choice, but what's interesting to me is that I never even thought to associate Circe with gold until I saw other artistic depictions of her. To me, she was always a shadow of her father and siblings, but also (as you've eloquently put it), many things her family is not. While this is not nearly as deep, I've also realized how closely the blues make the forest simultaneously feel like an ocean, and how the diagonal lines feel like tides hitting the shore. Thanks for taking the time to leave this in-depth comment; I'm really glad the design was able to encourage interpretations beyond what I intended 💛
I think she did a great deal for the cover. The process here is to think more on the audience, who would most need the book (1:15). Therefore the purple tones justify for that, as well as the emptiness/ spaciousness/ minimalism feel to it. To draw up the book again with details from the story would be only to focus on the story, which has been done for centuries in the printing industry. But once in a while, it's cool to see book covers that interact. Especially the purple tone is kind of the color of intuition/ sadness/ loneliness. If you see it under commercial eyes, it would appear to be like a notebook cover rather than a story unfold. But under a more conceptual perspective, it's on point.
i first came across your channel from the Character Design process of The Song of Achilles, but i stayed on because your videos are such a beautiful blend of animation, illustration, design and storytelling through editing and film. Your content is such a visual treat and such an inspiration for me who's picking up different art/design disciplines. Thank you for the valuable content you make!!
I love how not only did you draw the book cover, you even did a 3D mock up! Your reasoning for the design choices was cool to follow along to and really brought more meaning to the already amazing finished product!
I would definitely pick this edition up if I saw it in a bookshop. I think you really captured the sense of stillness or being stuck whilst acknowledging the peace and the growth she experiences when she finds her power. Really beautiful.
The amount of thought you put into your work never fails to amaze me! I love Circe and your redesign beautifully captures the essence of the novel! Thank you for such a lovely video💙🤍
I just finished my first year in illustration and this is such of perfect example of a) what my profs encourage us to think about in design, and b) the level of thoughtfulness and craft I strive for when I create! Thank you so much for sharing your process :)
I rewatch your videos over and over whenever I'm feeling uninspired. Each time, I notice something new. This time I realised one of the reasons I love the way you present things is the homemade videos and images you put to support your main contents. Makes the video feel more personal and tender, but it's perfectly balanced with the use of other people's art so that it doesn't feel too much like a vlog. I love your art so much.
RUclips’s really peaking with your content, it’s a privilege to be privy to this. If this were the 90’s I’d want the VCR collection of this channel, ugh.
The editing, the drawings, the thought process... Let’s just say I’m in complete awe of your talent once again. Honestly, thank you so much for sharing. This is inspirational and one can definitely see the hard work, dedication and love you put into these pieces of art. Bravo!
This is amazing. Thank you for letting us inside your beautiful mind and all that creative thoughts! Thank you for introducing us to this wonderful novel. There's nothing more pleasant than the birth and actualization of a great design! Your interpretation is so inspiring!
You've officially inspired me into getting back into art! The way you explain things is incredible, and your art even more so! Your cinematography and editing is amazing as well. Amazing video!
I love SOA and Circe so much, I’ve been dying to do my own work based on the books since seeing your video, and renditions by Julie Dillon and Delaney Januzzi. You’re amazing ♥️
I really love the way you integrate essence of story and metaphors into your art. This is such a unique video, I haven’t seen anyone do smth like this yet!! Also I really like your editing style 💕 oh and I think it’d be interesting if you did this with some Hindu mythology? I want to see how you would design some creatures and characters.
Another absolutely lovely video, I swear you keep being an enormous inspiration to me... I haven't read the book yet, but listening to you talk about it so sincerely and honestly really makes me want to pick it up at my local bookstore... now if only I could buy a version with this cover :|
hiii! just wanted to say I love the thought process, the art, literally everything! it gives me an insight to what artists think and aim for when drawing, and the end result is beautiful
With all these lockdowns I've been feeling quite disconnected from my graphic design studies, this was such an inspiring video. Your process and art are just lovely thank you so much for sharing this with us!
i’m sorry to hear you feel that way, and i totally get you. i’m glad this video could be of use - all the best with your studies, and i hope you’ll make things that make you happy!
Such a stunning cover design. This book also really resonated with me too so I appreciate your dive into the way it was written and Circe as a character. You do the book and the author an honour.
I love how the cover turned out and I love how the video weaves into the artwork itself... your choices are so good and make for such good end products. I really want to learn how to design like you- with intention and flair.
I rewatch your videos as I await the next time you'll grace us with incredibly narrated content. Love you!!! You are so talented and I learn so much from you !!!
As someone who has done multiple practice book covers, I adore how you described the process of creating this, and I wish I had seen this while working on my most recent practice cover. Absolutely gorgeous, I would definitely pick up this book at the store!
I already have the spanish edition (same as the us, design wise) of this book, but I would gladly purchase the book with your cover. It's amazing and I feel that it represents very well the book and how Circe is depicted by Miller. Love it.
You did such an incredible job omg!! looks just amazing, I would be so amazed if I saw this cover and this artwork that when I get in hands I would keep staring for 3 hours straight ksjdjd, and the way you tell stories are so so magical makes me travel through your words
I only know about Circe from reading Percy Jackson, where she's depicted as a somewhat evil sorcerous who aids women who come to her shores and tries to convince them to learn sorcery, but turn any men who come to her shores into (guinea) pigs, so this is pretty interesting and different from what I expected.
I was introduced to Circe via Percy Jackson as well! I remember reading somewhere that Miller felt compelled to reinterpret her character after feeling that her portrayal in the Odyssey was shallow and inadequate. To her, it was revealing that Circe's portion was told through Odysseus' perspective, which naturally, had its biases. It was refreshing getting to see this character cast in a completely different way.
Ok HOW didn't I know about this channel before?? It's beautiful, the art is fantastic, the explanation and themes are mind expanding, I absolutely love this video!! Enjoy your new sub😅
Brilliant. And spot on, about book covers. (P.s. IF you feel the book may be "special" as in award winning. you also want to design it clean enough to accommodate the "stickers" of the awards, without interfering with image and purpose and beauty of the cover.)
this was very beautiful! my only lil nippick was the placement of wind. If the scenery was being blown west, why was Circe's hair being blown east? Anyways that was it, I love the finishing touch!
I absolutely ADORE what you did with the cover, gorgeous. I wonder what it would look like though if in one of the corner of the back of the book you had the conch shell and maybe two sets of footprints, because Circe never forgot where she came from; she grew from it. She grew from her experience around conch shells to her experience with the forest. Just a random thought though. Adore this, 100% subscribing.
I only want to read this book because of how you described it :) I honestly wouldn't have picked up the yellow and black covers. But I do passionately love female retelling/perspectives of mythology
This video is a work of art and brilliance, and I adore you as an artist and as a guide on the path to poetry and appreciation. Thank you for the fantastic cover design, and the wonderful description of a book I never thought could be, and now is among my reading list. My comments here on RUclips aren't usually so poetic, which is a good proof of how you are incredible 😅 Heres One more new subscriber for you!
I think that the connection that Circe feels with nature symbolizes her relationship with her immortality and also the contrast of her personality with other gods, mainly in her ability to adapt and transform, also reflected in her witchcraft. by cultivating and hunting her spells, she unites with nature as well as herself as a witch.
Sorry for being negative but while I'm depressed during quarantine this book made me feel a LOT more depressed, maybe because im sensitive, so it's weird and kind of ironic that it has such a different effect on other people? Not that it's a bad thing
I think that if Circe, the person in the landscape, were of a bolder color to separate the neutrals, such as red for example, would be very powerful. And maybe over time there would be a blends of blue and red as she grew accustomed. Then she might be purple. Idk, just a thought
I think that if Circe, the person in the landscape, were of a bolder color to separate the neutrals, such as red for example, would be very powerful. And maybe over time there would be a blends of blue and red as she grew accustomed. Then she might be purple. Idk, just a thought
Loving the blues and the purples...! Circe here looks like she could almost seamlessly blend in with the Circe when she walks to Trygon. What's missing here though is the epicness of the divine halls we spend a lot of time in at the beginning of the novel. (I thought the stark gold of the original cover matched that.) If only there was a way to keep the good of your version as well as the original. hmm.
I'm late to the party but I love the shell design/metaphor. It's a detail in the book you could potentially miss if you're not paying close enough attention
the cover is beautiful but I wished you would have attempted to incorporate her eyes. while her sibling's and father's eyes are always described as golden her eyes are simply yellow (or the colour of piss). her mortal voice separates her from the gods but her eyes are neither godlike nor divine. just as she doesn't fit into the world of humans or gods, her eyes don't fit in either.
your end result is absolutely fantastic and peaceful but it isn't eye catching and something that would be bore into your mind once you give it a look-over then divert your attention to another.
Everything is perfect especially the editing and narration. I hope you have time to redesign (although the current cover is also stunning) the book cover of Ariadne? that will look awesome!!!!
I'm coming back to comment on this video because about 2 months ago I decided to read Circe, ONLY because of this video you made which peaked my interest. I do no read books, sadly I haven't read a whole novel in about 5 years since high school, so I felt very proud of myself for picking this up from the library. And after just finishing the last chapter a few minutes ago, I just want to say thank you. It was an incredible experience and just... I am speechless. When I return Circe I will pick up The Song Of Achilles next.
"if you read the book, you know why" is it because her voice is unappealing to gods because how much she sounds like a human? is it because it's her biggest weapon since she can't do her magic without her voice? is it because its the one thing that doesn't change with her, but remains the same despite her being a completely different person as the story advances?? all of them????
i feel like my reading comprehension is rlly bad lmao i get too lost in the beauty of prose to really be able to read into deeper themes, but i understood her voice and the importance of it!!
If I saw this book cover in a store/library I would immediately want to buy it, not even knowing the content. You just Get It from looking at it. I love how you explained your process in this video, very clear and calming!
I want to cry when looking at your work oml, it's just mind boggling just HOW MUCH thought you put into this god. don't get me started on the editing and the little circes, and how you thoroughly read and understood the source material but also looked outside to other designs/ designers. my god even taking into consideration that we interact with the cover asdjnaksd, you inspire me to really think about what I make
Oh wow. RUclips algorithm just served me up a real gem! I finished the audio book for _Circe_ back in April, and it was absolutely stunning. The quiet solitude and space within the novel...mm! Perfect, especially given everything from this past year. This was beautiful, too. I love all the thought and care you put into your design. It really suits the book. Thank you for sharing (and subscribed!) 💜
on my fourth rewatch! i'm so in love with your videos and art. read the song of achilles and circe because of your videos and thoroughly enjoyed them both. thank you
I loved this! I love watching a artist showing their process, especially this one, as you showed us how you grasped the meaning and honestly illustrated a really nice design onto a book cover.
Thank you for another great video. Your editing and visuals are superb as always, and I appreciate how well you articulate your process. Honestly whenever I feel uninspired or need help with something, I always turn to your videos just because you're so informative and creative. Also next time I order some books from Amazon, I'll definitely pick up Circe. The prose seems so beautiful.
Your previous Achilles video prompted me to reread it for the 3rd time, have a feeling this video is going to do the same for circe. Bravo on a phenomenal video 🤸 your attention to detail is engrossing 🤹
Im absolutely in love with this cover. This could easily be a collector's edition. Honestly this video is lowkey making me want to pursure book designing as a career
yep! i agree with you - i should have started with the text from the earliest stage onward; it is a little hard to read and interacts awkwardly with the figure where it is now
I read this book years ago it still is in my top 3. There isn’t much action but Miller’s writing of Circe’s reflection and internal commentary is what made me love it so much. Thank you for this beautiful, unique and personal cover ❤
I am in love with this! I loved the way you create and narrate when I watched the song of Achilles video so I expected the same professional artwork but this is even better. Your videos and art are such great inspirational and original works! So well thought and detailed without being overwhelming. Such balance!
Man i just wanna say, I love your channel so much. It’s a safe place for me and it’s so insightful. Honestly it’s crazy this kind of quality comes from a student. I wish you luck on your journey!
I just wanted to say thank you for the recommendation. Circe is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read, and halfway through it became one of the hardest stories I've ever had to read. You are appreciated.
i don't know if some of the points below were intentional or not, but for what it's worth, i really appreciate the thoughtfulness colour palette that you picked. spoilers ahead!

YES
I love how not only did you draw the book cover, you even did a 3D mock up! Your reasoning for the design choices was cool to follow along to and really brought more meaning to the already amazing finished product!
I would definitely pick this edition up if I saw it in a bookshop. I think you really captured the sense of stillness or being stuck whilst acknowledging the peace and the growth she experiences when she finds her power. Really beautiful.
oml if i saw your version in a bookstore I would buy it instantly
you're the type of person i aspire to be
Honestly, same
same here
i was thinking the same throughout the entire video......
Insane how just an aesthetic and great effort just woos people into wanting to be you
The amount of thought you put into your work never fails to amaze me!
I love Circe and your redesign beautifully captures the essence of the novel! Thank you for such a lovely video💙🤍
oh boy, if all book covers were as well-thought and as beautiful as this one... your talent and your work are truly inspiring ✨
oh i'm sure most are! it's just that designers don't always have the chance to share their thoughts/process in depth.
thank you for the kind words
Gosh I WISH this was the actual book cover. Artists are too powerful.
I just finished my first year in illustration and this is such of perfect example of a) what my profs encourage us to think about in design, and b) the level of thoughtfulness and craft I strive for when I create! Thank you so much for sharing your process :)

We all hate hands
i LOVE all ur videos it feels like im getting an art lesson AND therapy
This is amazing. Thank you for letting us inside your beautiful mind and all that creative thoughts! Thank you for introducing us to this wonderful novel. There's nothing more pleasant than the birth and actualization of a great design! Your interpretation is so inspiring!
I really want this edition now.

Such a stunning cover design. This book also really resonated with me too so I appreciate your dive into the way it was written and Circe as a character. You do the book and the author an honour.
Every frame of this video is art.
I fucking love your style.
Pd: Hi from Chile
I love how the cover turned out and I love how the video weaves into the artwork itself... your choices are so good and make for such good end products. I really want to learn how to design like you- with intention and flair.
I loooove hearing your thought process! Beautiful redesign ❤️
woah 30 seconds in and I had to subscribe. your editing and color palette is toptier.

Man if you sold thses as a book jacket on an etsy or something I would buy it to slip over the hardcover US size, for sure
I think that if Circe, the person in the landscape, were of a bolder color to separate the neutrals, such as red for example, would be very powerful. And maybe over time there would be a blends of blue and red as she grew accustomed. Then she might be purple. Idk, just a thought

HFDKSDHF A VIDEO FOR THE OTHER MADELINE MILLER BOOK THAT I LOVE *chefs kiss*
the cover is beautiful but I wished you would have attempted to incorporate her eyes. while her sibling's and father's eyes are always described as golden her eyes are simply yellow (or the colour of piss). her mortal voice separates her from the gods but her eyes are neither godlike nor divine. just as she doesn't fit into the world of humans or gods, her eyes don't fit in either.
Could this cover be available on Etsy or somewhere similar? I'd love to have this as a sleeve for a hardback of Circe
your end result is absolutely fantastic and peaceful but it isn't eye catching and something that would be bore into your mind once you give it a look-over then divert your attention to another.
I’m also confused on how you painted circe’s hair, is it some sort of procreate brush?
Your art is so beautiful, ia m deaply inspired. may i ask where did you get your brushes?
now i want the book with this cover :(
Is there a way I can buy this design to put as a dust jacket on my version of Circe?
You didn't only make wonderful book cover art, you did a crazy good production! Thank you very much for this.
I would buy it, sooo prettyy, like a jewel on the shelf🎉
if only i could buy a cover 😩
If you turned this into a dust jacket, I would buy it.
I want to cry when looking at your work oml, it's just mind boggling just HOW MUCH thought you put into this god. don't get me started on the editing and the little circes, and how you thoroughly read and understood the source material but also looked outside to other designs/ designers. my god even taking into consideration that we interact with the cover asdjnaksd, you inspire me to really think about what I make
art + deep talk & insights = perfection
Such a cool video! I loved this book and I would buy this!
Your videos are always so clean and pretty!
on my fourth rewatch! i'm so in love with your videos and art. read the song of achilles and circe because of your videos and thoroughly enjoyed them both. thank you
I would totally pick this up if I saw it in a store somewhere
this artwork perfectly captures emotions and images that popped into my head while reading "kirke"!!! i'm amazed
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that last blender bit is so cooooool! you mapped it onto the mesh aaaaaaaa that is so clever
i was considering just downloading a mockup template from illustrator but i am glad i chose the start-from-scratch route with blender ^^
I'm interested in Egypt mythology any ideas
I loved this! I love watching a artist showing their process, especially this one, as you showed us how you grasped the meaning and honestly illustrated a really nice design onto a book cover.
Congratulations on making it to Creator on the rise 🇨🇦!
Damn the RUclips algorithm, for never recommending this channt to me before🙃 incredible art & fantastic editing; phenomenal content! Subscribed👋
I read that as circle
Beautiful book cover!! I do think the title placement needs some work
yep! i agree with you - i should have started with the text from the earliest stage onward; it is a little hard to read and interacts awkwardly with the figure where it is now
I read this book years ago it still is in my top 3.
