Witch Hat Atelier is a strikingly beautiful manga. When people try to explain why the love a manga so much, you might find the usual answers: "I love the characters", "really like the art", "world building!!". Which, by no means is a bad thing, but an element of manga that is not very commonly talked about it panelling.
It's very easy to confuse composition and panelling - they're both very intertwined. But Shirahama Kamome, the mangaka of Witch Hat Atelier, is one of the most defining artists at the moment, who I can truly say demonstrates the most creative use of panelling... Yeah, good shit. The type that when it comes out, it makes you feel relieved, and brings up your overall mood for the rest of the day. The kind of good shit you don't even have to wipe for, because it's so good. I've been stalling on reading this manga for many years now, and I think this video broke the last straw. I will cave in and read it the first chance I get.

See for me, because of how detailed and stylised her art is, in combination with the unique panelling, I don't know just how well it could be translated into motion/animation without losing a lot of the magic from the manga? It'd definitely be a difficult task for the animation team that would be behind the project, that's for sure!

They would have to capture mood and atmosphere, Mushoku Tensei is a style of anime this could benefit from.
I feel KyoAni could do a good job but it would be far too stressful and time-consuming.
@@linesinmotion really hope its not mappa if it ever does, mappa is such a garbage studio they think overworking staff and throwing large sums of money around is gonna overcome the lack of skill and creativity, they literally never even attempt to mimic the art style of the original manga, imagine if mob psycho was done by mappa....
Her manga is very unique, it feels European and takes inspiration from all over yet. It’s built into it, it’s simply lovely.
It doesnt feel like reading a manga for some reason, reminds me of the old western comics like tin tin, but done in alice in wonderlands style, i rmemeber reading a narnia comic like this

This video really makes me wish manga like this were included in the school curriculum. But it was just text, text, text. And yeah, sure, classic novels are classics for a reason but I think visual storytelling is inherently more compelling to humans than plain text because humans are visual creatures. The oldest examples of storytelling were cave paintings depicting hunting.
In terms of visual media, we got some theatre, some paintings and statues and a tiny bit of cinema.
We didn't even get to talk about Maus. Maus! The only comic to win the Pulitzer Award. And it wasn't even mentioned during the Holocaust classes.
It is a shame that, for mediums so popular in this day and age, that comics and manga are not talked about enough (or at all) within educational systems. A lot of comics artists/mangakas are self taught, and it's a shame that they're not even touched up on during school.
Because current academia around most corners of the world has become an elitist circle which is slow to adapt to the real world: College graduates do work that is unrelated to their major; economists theory unable to alleviate developing countries from poverty; politicians equip with honors from well known school are indecisive with coronavirus pandemic.
Another explanation is that as humanity's quantity of knowledge increase, so is the complexity of each field of knowledge(e.g. Chemistry, Physics). To utilize requires you to be very specialize, and that narrows your understanding of other fields unrelated to your study, so it becomes harder for one academic major to have a comprehensive view of knowledge that includes the newest discovery. Therefore, English literature, which has been taught for centuries, will be slow to adapt to comic and manga art, which have only become more sophisticated in the past 40 years.
I got to read comic books as curriculum in public middle school (Maus, American Born Chinese, Foiled), but it stopped in high school. I guess it depends on the school. I definitely remember those book more because they were visual, I wish it’d continued.

His course is Reading Graphic Novels but, he only lectured that most US comics were about understanding and learning where and how they came in art history, cultural issues, and contemporary society including Maus by Art Spiegelman, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, Daniel Clowes & Chris Ware, and excluding international comics like French and Japanese manga, and TinTin by Herge, Mœbius, Osamu Tezuka, Akira Toriyama, Katsuhiro Otomo, Naoki Urasawa and more!

Would either of you do a video on how animes often handles the topics of self-acceptance, social anxieties, and reality distortion? I love both your channels and I'm not particularly good at editing, but I think it'd be a cool topic and there's a lot of shows where characters pull themselves out of reality to do their best to cope with it.
After watching this video, it really becomes apparent how 99% of manga artists don't even come close to Shirahama Kamome's art & panelling. Manga I've read and think the panelling is pretty good would probably be 3 AM Dangerzone by Nemu Youko, and maybe Ultra Heaven by Keiichi Koike, perhaps check them out some time?
Her art I can't speak for, as everyone has their own tastes for an art style (though her art personally for me is one of my favourites) but panelling? Yeah, she's definitely up there as one of the best, if not the best, artists there is out there creating pages like this.
And I haven't heard of either of those two stories, so I'll definitely check them out - thanks for watching and the recommendations!

This video has just made me want to pay attention to paneling even more closely. I've only noticed it a couple of times in Manga like in berserk and dragon ball but berserk had the issue of more detail in one part of the page but makes other panels feel insignificant, and dragon ball just used the paneling media as a way to comprehend how a fight flows. When I have time I will definitely check out Witch Hat Atelier and share it with friends.
Dragonball definitely has some of the best paneling in the industry, it's not as uniquely creative as witch hat atelier, but it is really well readable, which is important especially for things like fight scenes, the visual hierarchy and composition of the pages is just godlike, reading is really seamless in part because Toriyama doesn't put focus on the borders on the panels with decorations and such, witch hat atelier nails the balance with stunning visuals and clarity, but that does come with some slight confusion, it's nothing major but compared to DragonBall or Onepiece's less decorative panels, witch hat atelier did feel a little more busy than I'd like when reading, but it's very minor since I can still read it fine and get a nicer illustration too, I just find that, for me keeping the borders clean makes reading more smooth, but I'm definitely not against experimental stuff that can only be achieved in comic book/manga format, especially when done so well.

Fujimoto panelining is really good. His other work fire punch has a lot of good panelining combine with such a beautiful artwork
Was about to comment that, Fujimoto has consistently the best paneling i've ever had the opportunity to see.
It comes as no surprise, he's a huge fan of cinema. And it shows, because his paneling is so effective at conveying tension and timing, it actually feels like a movie story board or something similar. I just absolutely love his paneling
@@linesinmotion i really still think dorohedoro does panelling the best out of any manga ive read which is very important with the grimmy hard to follow artstyle, compare this with blame! Which has werid panneling which makes it harder to follow with the grimmy style
as any great artist : "TIME TO STEAL" but really this was a great video, i dont tend to read manga a lot cause its nots a normal thing to buy here and even despite that as student i find it hard to get time where i can have for myself as a creative, so i love videos like this talking abou the art of certain works or story telling that helps me improved more

Oh my... Otoyome and Blue Period as examples, in a video essay on Witch Hat Atelier... I'm already awestruck and you have captured the bliss of Witch Hat Atelier with a flawless execution.
As someone who is infatuated with the golden age of Illustration, Shirahama Kamome has captured that with in her work in Witch Hat Atelier. She has managed a style that I have been seeking after as an artist for a while now. It leaves me slightly envious as an artist, but more than those emotions, her art shows me that it is something achievable. I often regard her work to be timeless compared to her peers because she took inspiration from the recent masters in illustration, recent as in within a century give or take.
I just found your channel randomly while searching for Witch Hat Atelier, and I don't believe that it's possible to fully express in words how impressed I am by this video. The theme alone already was enough, panelling is something that I really like but it's criminally overlooked by manga readers, but you didn't stop there and made an amazing use of editing to explain your points visually, keeping it simple but polished to a point that we could see the hard work and effort you've put on it, and to make it even better, your use of examples was amazing. There's no better way to demonstrate how panelling is important than destroying it and putting side by side with the original, right?
This video really shows how passionate you are towards what you do, and it's outrageous that such a high quality channel is so small.

100% agree! In an interview Shirahama said that she intentionally wrote this manga for younger girls and I think you can really tell in terms of the storytelling, she does a wonderful job with the characters, even before the art too! Thanks for commenting!

This reminds me of the panelling in a short manhua i read awhile back called a "a story concerning sweets". It's only 9 chapters but its absolutely stunning and made me cry. I feel it's very under rated and overlooked because it's a manhua (Chinese) and not Manga or even Manhwa (Korean). It's panelling in the first chapter emphasises so well how the black owl is an outsider to everyone else as by making them look into the story from outside the panels. Its full coloured since it's a manhua and i find it amazing how well all the colours compliment each other and go together, the main two colours use is a very dark blue hue and orange which are just amazing to look at. The way the dark and light colours often contrast to tell the story is also absolutely amazing.
One of my favourite things they did is at the start of chapter 4 when xiao xiao was telling the black owl a story and it shows the two of them sitting on the word bubble which is a really creative way of showing the characters also viewing the story like us readers. I can go own and ramble about how much I love this story and how well the panels flow but I really hope more people will give it a read. Not enough people give manhua a chance and I really feel like there are some amazing one's. "Nanhao and Shangfeng" for example is one of the best comedies I've read as the art improves a lot more in later chapters.
A story concerning sweets is only 9 chapters and its a really short but amazing story so please, anyone, give it more of a chance cause I love it so much.
Shirahama panelling is simply genius, i've read many manga but there is really very little mangaka that can make the panelling very creative like that

Wow this video is two years old and I can't believe I'm just finding it. What a massive inspiration to an aspiring comic-maker- I was blown away by some of these pages, and now find myself extremely pumped to work on that minicomic I've had on the backburner for the past week. Wonderful analysis and impeccable attention to detail as far as the panel animations; it really made the video so much more immersive and interesting to watch! I've always struggled with creative comic paneling really, and I've been trying harder as of late to study effective visual storytelling through panels to really up my game and make my work stand out more. During this video, I gathered one volume of every series I own manga from and was looking over them as I watched(which was very enjoyable).
YuYu Hakusho and Card Captor Sakura were the two that stood out to me the most as having standout paneling.
I also recommend Hakumei and Mikochi for being one of the most wonderfully illustrated manga I've seen.
Nice!! I actually need to check out the YuYu Hakusho manga, i've only watched the anime. But despite the hate Togashi gets (especially within his last few volumes of hunter x hunter, which are not his fault at all) I think he demonstrates a great understanding of composition - looking forward to seeing what he accomplished for yuyu hakusho. And 100% agree with Hakumei and Mikochi, the background art is so beautiful and ghibli-like
I have volume 4 only of YuYu Hakusho in iffy condition. It's the first printing(2004) from a library sale but the art and pages still look great. I've only watched the new Hunter x Hunter anime. Being an mangaka in WSJ is no joke - I think Eiichiro Oda may secretly be a cyborg who has a never-ending ability to make chapters.

Some of my favourite pages are 1) the page in Ch15 where Qifrey is swiping the predrawn magic on the ground to create a protective barrier and despite the panels all showing a different angle/zoom of the action, the motion carries across the panels in a seemless arc - it shows you him grabbing the page, pulling it across the ground, and finally completing the arc in front of him whilst maintaining the momentum of the action. it's truly fantastic 2) in later chapters which have come out since this video (i think?) where Coco and Tartar hide behind a wall listening to Coustas and Dagda talk - and the panels themselves are what they're hiding behind. it's gorgeous!!
I feel like this whole video is art by itself. It is so beautifully put together, with panelling, the music, the scripting and analysis, the points that were made etc. This video is going to be kept deep in my heart. From now on I'm gonna pay more attention to different mangas' panelling. Great job on the wonderful analysis video! 👏🏼❤

Finally watched this since the anime news yesterday and its been in my watch later for so long and aaaaa just seeing Shirahama's art gives me chills this video is great and put into words why i love everything she makes. Manga and anime are 2 completely different forms of art so im not expecting it to be a one on one recreation but something unique in itself.. i should reread the manga

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm legit jealous of Kamome Shirahama's work. I've had similar designs and concepts with the same influences lying around for ages and I just discovered that my work would feel like a bad rip-off at best. Regardless, amazing video !! You made me fall in love with Witch Hat Atelier all over again, thank you. While reading this manga I have never realized how much effort and thought that was put in it. The manga is beautiful, but now I know it could be more.
What an unexpected video to show up on my feed. I love animation and comics/manga (since childhood), but animation is the one that stuck with me the most. While I’m sure that will never change, this video certainly opened my eyes to a new perspective on the art of manga/comics- the art form itself and the art each each illustrator puts into it.
I really like this series and I didn't understood how much this has sense ! Just thought it was original and pretty, but this is soooo damn good thinking.
Before watching this video, Witch Hat Atelier was just a manga I really wanted to read because of the pretty art. Now, I’ve realized this manga is an experience.

Your video is incredible, your script is so easy to understand and how you flow from one point to another is as smooth as butter. Your editing and transitions are so clean that it beautifully compliments your writing but more importantly conveys what you're talking about in a way that entranced me. I was so engrossed from the first second all the way to the end also due to your atmospheric music and stellar narration. This is easily one of the best videos I've ever seen not only for all the things I mention but because you can tell how passionate you are about the technical elements of manga but mainly Witch Hat Atelier. It's very apparent it means a lot to you and you did a great job in sucking me into the video the same way that manga sucked you into it's world. It's criminal that you don't have more subs and views.
Now my gushing aside, I also love this video because I almost never see anyone talk about panel layouts when it comes to manga! It's my favorite element because it's the one thing that makes it unique so I'm always looking for ones that use it in interesting ways. It's one of the reason a lot of manga doesn't keep my attention because not many use the language of it's medium to the fullest. I honestly think when a mangaka understands this what they make can't be matched no matter how good of an adaptation it gets but that's just me. Great ones can used the same tiny elements in completely different ways that can have big effects on the readers enjoyment as well as give it personality outside of just the art. Kinda in the same way a director a for a film can uses different lenses, shots, movements, etc to convey elements of the story.
Witch hat Atelier looks amazing and I will definitely be checking it out. A manga I think has great if not unique layouts is "Kawai Complex" by Ruri Miyahara. It's a romance story so it's all dialogue and how she uses speech bubbles to guide you through the page is my favorite thing. She'll layout the bubbles in unconventional ways where you'll end up reading the page in pretty weird ways outside of the usual "right to left" way your used to. I always liked to say that it makes you feel like you reading manga wrong because of how she leads you through it. There are even pages that when I asked my bud who loves manga to read it, we read them in completely differently ways but still understood everything that happened and got to the same conclusion. It also works thematically since the characters in the story are all very unconventional and are kinda a mess. The other thing she does really well is how she uses the space of the page and to layout the panels to make so many moments feel very immediate of each other. It feels like a single moment with many nuances is happening rather than individual parts to make one big one.
I can be here all day talking about this stuff (I already do to the dismay of my friends...) but I'm gonna end my gushing. I'm really happy searched up Manga Panels on YT cause I would have never found your channel. I can't wait to see all the stuff you talk about in the future. Also sorry for the massive comment your vid was so stellar I couldn't shut up.

I loved Kamome Shirahama since Endevi (localized by Seven Seas Entertainment as Eniale & Dewiela) and it really was startling to see Witch Hat Atelier having all the movie like comic book paneling.
I've watched this video far too many times to count, each time I've learned/rediscovered/inspired by/ re-inspired by/understood more about something new. Like classical music; each next listening is never quite the same.
As a fashion/menswear designer heavily impacted by visual storytelling (because I don't really understand fashion, ironically), your (this) video continues to inspire me to take courage in being fantastical/whimsical/daring in telling my work's story-- beyond just clothing, model posing, a fancy background, and perfect lighting. Theres so much I want to say, but to best sum it up is that your video create this creative excitement that must come out.

Well… I need this manga now to study from, and enjoy! I really feel inspired by what a master can do with the medium and this is clearly another one to study from. I just got Berserk more recently and now I’ll look into Witch hat Atelier. I’ll have to at least get some of them…. This video was also incredibly well put together, animated and explained. I’ll be saving it for a rewatch and proper note taking later. This is great stuff for people like me researching how to craft our own graphic novels. Thanks!
This is truly beautiful! I fell in love with this manga after seeing ONE panel on twitter, can you believe it? A truly remarkable art by Shirahama Kamome can just hook me on to buying the manga. Her art work is truly one of a kind, As I read more I realize the art needs to be savored rather pacing it through quickly. This video describes her storytelling of life very well, with Beautiful editing by the way.

I love how you put into words what I've been thinking about it's art from what I've seen, the way the page composition is integral to the artistic intention of the story itself and how separating the two can become impossible. It reminds me a lot of how I felt reading Trigun for the first time and the artistry in the use of timing and space there. wonderful video!!

I enjoyed the video! I love Fujimotos paneling in Chainsaw Man, and Witch Hat’s paneling seems so unique and on another level, it has me really intrigued now
Fujimoto really impresses me, especially given he is on a very short deadline weekly and yet he's still able to pull out some lovely usage of panelling. I'd agree Shirahama's work is incredibly unique, I've yet to see anything like it!

I recommend Shimanami Tasogare! The symbolism within the art its absolutely amazing, and there are a ton of standout pages with gorgeous panelling.

hi, I know this video is relatively old and you probably won't see this, but this is a video that I keep coming back to, sometimes on purpose and sometimes because it appears in my recommended again. I remember first watching it back in early 2021 when I barely got back into drawing comics after a very long time and it changed the way I approach how I do panelling and how I approach my comics in general. I've actually since managed to get a bit of a following over my comics and sparked something in me that changed how I look on my work. every time I rewatch this video I am inspired to draw something new. what I'm trying to say is, thank you, for inspiring me and for teaching me just how wonderful this can be, how much more meaningful I can make my art, and for making such a wonderful, detailed videoessay that also introduced me to one of my now favourite mangas

Something I noticed with the flow of the double page at 13:00 is (because of that overlap) you'd naturally move from the "Must've imagined that" panel directly to the left (following Coco). And the vertical layout results in your eyes traveling up, where Coco is being told "Up here", just like the motion we just did! It feels brilliant.
This was a fantastic video, really well put together. The topic is one I've oft thought about but rarely see when it comes to discussions on comics, despite how integral and important it is. The flow of a comic is a big deal breaker for me if it's done poorly. I think while western comics are more willing to experiment with it, it is also more often western comics that can feel stilted or hard to read because of experimentation. Also colour and art style seem to affect flow as well, I've noticed I have a hard time "animating" the characters in my head the more realistic the characters are.
Amazing analysis, editing and narration! I hope you continue to create more analysis of comic paneling and layout in other manga/western comic series. I guess it depends on how successful this turns out to be and if you think another series warrants a vid like this. Nevertheless, keep up the great work! I'll definitely be lurking around. Also, how long have you been editing? Judging from your first vid you probably had at least 5 years of editing experience and maybe like 2-3 years of Adobe experience.
I'll definitely be making more videos that are about manga/western comic books (I really want to do a video about Paper Girls actually!) I can't say they'll be able panelling exactly, but maybe a different element to the design perhaps? And I've been doing graphic design for around 5 years, but video editing only 2-ish years, still a lot to improve 👍

i have no idea why this popped up in my recommended when it did, but i resolved to read the manga before i watched it, because that would make sense lol, and needless to say, i have never been so indebted to an algorithm before. this manga is easily the most beautifully illustrated story i've ever read, and i've constantly been awestruck by the composition most of all, even more so than the sheer beauty of the drawings themselves. it is a true masterwork, and your video helps to highlight why exactly the craftsmanship is so impeccable. thank you for making this video

You did a great job explaining the technical aspects and you have quite the eclectic taste when it comes to manga (like Jagaaaan and that one aquarium manga that looks really cool). While not a manga, Alan Moore's Miracleman does have some great paneling in it and so does the webcomic Ava's Demon. BTW what was the name of the author you said before Otomo?
