Given words related to slavery like slave and master have recently started being considered "problematic" we might get canceled soon for saying HM Slave
Cool Video interesting to see the remakes of Gen 3 are the mirror opposites of the original Ruby and Sapphire in terms of speedrunning, due to a mostly enhanced story because mega evolutions were a thing and Primal forms which makes this so much different from Sapphire, oh yeah not to mention the move split changes by this time in ORAS.
Latios also has that luster purge. Same SpA as Mist Ball but instead of a 50% chance to drop SpA, it drops Spdef. Granted, I don't think the drops ever matter except for one Brendan fight(fuck that Amnesiaing Wailord).
This...actually makes a lot of sense. Mudkip's the go-to because of his type coverage and stuff until you can grab a legendary to finish out the run, so it'd feel a lot nice to bash through some numels and camerupts than it does to struggle through carvanhas and sharpedos. Nice. I do have to ask. While Treecko would struggle with zubats, is it not worth it to run Treecko instead of Mudkip for Alpha Sapphire? All of the extra mandatory water type battles SURELY get Treecko some advantage right? I have to imagine it can handle the first two gyms similarly to Mudkip, as well as being able to break even against Wattson right?
With Treecko you have all the poison types Team Aqua uses, Wattson's steel types and mostly Flannery, where Treecko doesn't really have any natural answer, especially when it's on a lower level than her mons. The thing about Carvanha is that it can still go down with two Rock Tombs from Mudkip, you just need to hit them. And if one option is more risky but faster and the other option is less risky but overall much slower then it's worse for speedruns. There also aren't that many water types in the game before you get Latias, after which your starter usually doesn't matter too much anymore.
No Treecko cannot reliably beat Watson or Flannery without grinding or other preparation, has a harder time dealing with grimer and muk until it can pick up Dig, has to put up with Dig taking extra time, (and while not common in AS, is absolutely stonewalled by any Koffing), and is significantly worse than Latias or Kyogre 99% of the time once they're on the table, just like Mudkip in that regard. Additionally, it's an extra timesink to catch a pokemon for Surf, and potentially another one for Dive/Waterfall. Also, while I've not tested this, I suspect there are additional time losses due to needing to heal during routes and gyms, because Treecko simply struggles to KO pokemon as quickly as Mudkip, and is much more frail, so it's taking damage more often, and taking more damage when it does.
It's better if you start and have the eon ticket as well as technically both are available in the games but the other only unlocks a bit later after you beat norman or so then you can go back and get latios from southern island or latias (if Omega ruby)
but now i still don't see why people would not use primal ky on glacia an abuse the exact same thing they already abuse in OR by setting up on glalie who's desperately trying to set up hail so they can then KO walrain before it gets a chance to use sheer cold? i mean somebody for sure has considered this and decided it's not worth it, i just dunno WHY?
It's the same amount of setup turns for Kyogre with both Mystic Water and Blue Orb but Blue Orb requires you to equip + get the primal animation + unequip it after. Probably around a 40 second net loss for Kyogre, but it's a net gain for Groudon unless you have an amazing nature, and Ivs.
Indeed. Without factoring Hidden Abilities, megas, ect I think Swampert is STILL the strongest starter, competitively. The other candidates I'd look at would be Primarina, Skeledirge, and Cinderace, though Cinderace would be almost entirely because of Court Change. Also worth noting. In that context, Serperior is the worst, and it's not close. Meganium is probably second worst, and it clowns on Serperior.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290Meganium is still the worst by far, still not even close. Serperior with Overgrowth can at least run a Calm Mind + Taunt set, which is still better than anything Meganium has to offer. That aside Greninja is currently played with Torrent much more after the nerf to Protean, and Infernape and Empoleon are really solid mons that usually prefer their regular abilities anyways. For Skeledirge it looks bad though, Unaware made it the menace it currently is in the first place.
@@nicolaistuhlmuller8718 Skeledirge does much worse without Unaware, of course, but it has Torch Song, which is absurdly good, and would be better than most starters with that move outright. Serperior has nothing to do after it sets up, besides use terrible grass moves, because it learns nothing else. Taunt and speed are its only redeeming quality, but because it's so hilariously unthreatening it's basically pointless. Meganium not only has moves, it has a choice in what it wants to do, in defensive team support, status spreading, or even a funny physical offensive set. It's not good, but it has strengths it can leverage. Serperior does not. It's absolutely horrific, it is one of the worst fully evolved pokemon of all time without Contrary.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 back before Contrary Serperior was released, it was still a whopping two tiers above Meganium. Meganium only has 7 attack and 8 special attack more than Serperior, so it's equally non threatening, and their movepools are almost the same except for the lack of Calm Mind and Taunt on Meganium's side and the lack of Earthquake on Serperior's side, but again, Meganium is as non threatening offensively as an unboosted Serperior. Serperior saw play in the lower tiers with either a fast dual screen set or a Calm Mind set, and while none of those sets are good enough for higher tiers, they were viable in the lower ones while Meganium was never viable anywhere outside the absolute bottom of the bottom tiers. So yes, Serperior is bad, but it's still a straight upgrade to Meganium, which offers the same low power. decent bulk and movepool as Serperior but with awful speed and no Calm Mind.

@@PulseEffects the reason why i asked that was cause i don't get what they've tried or not yet though it also feels like from your story that they don't really look into the rout from a triko perspective or a torchic perspective for the alpha Sapphire game (im no speedrunner so i may just be dumb) but I'd kinda expect that someone would of tried the other 2 starters at some point since the game's launch or try to find better options for the mons to use in the run other than just get theough to upgrade one and upgrade 2 and practically yolo the elite 4
Speedrunners are pretty thorough with their research! As I said in the video though, the Gyms really crushed the potential of the other two. Treecko especially gets dunked on and even the best Torchic run is like 10 minutes behind by Norman.
I'm gonna be honest. Koffing is unironically a much more favourable matchup for Mudkip compared to Grimer, since Koffing has pretty paper-thin Special Defence, while Grimer is overall more bulky.
@@PulseEffects True, but as you point out later, Weezing is certainly a significantly more favourable matchup compared to Muk. I would just imagine that taking out Koffing with a move such as Water Gun (even if it may take a couple turns) wouldn't really be that bad.
@@BobbyFluffy unfortunately not. Levitate just ruins any chance of Koffing dying fast and gives it a chance to be annoying on the turn after we hit it. 😔
I'm sorry but Septile has never been referred to as a powerhouse in a competitive setting. Swampert is also the best of the three in competitive with the exception of gen 5-7 when Blaziken got Speed Boost.
Since swampert gets stab on surf, why wouldn't you try teaching latias anything else? Seems like a willful handicap. Better question, why not pick up an electric type move/pokemon in Asapphire? Paralysis would be a lifesaver.
Just imagine how long it would take to take a detour, catch an electric type and level grind it up just to make some fights a little faster, that would be a willful handicap. Again, it's not even worth buying tm Thunder for kyogre to beat Glacia with, because it takes longer to go into the store, get to the tm floor and buy and teach thunder than to beat Walrein with Surf. As for Swampert, in a speedrun you never get a Swampert. When you get Latias, you have a level 30 Marshtomb and so you'd have to do a lot of stuff using Marshtomb instead of Latias, and all you get from that is being able to use Swampert for a few fights before replacing it with Kyogre anyways.
