this is one of my favorite DT songs. The first album with James on Vox. I wish his voice would have held and he could have sang like this his entire career, but as anyone listening could hear, he was way over extending himself and he tore something and his voice was never quite the same again. He did manage to retrain himself and became a great singer, only he could have been even better. The playing on this is so amazing from everyone. Probably one of the best backing track sections for a keyboard solo I have ever heard. That section is so tight its magical.

Mike Portnoy was the founding drummer of Dream Theater, and is a huge Neil Peart fan (he even wrote lyrics for Dream Theater)... he recalled a moment of pride learning to play Rush's instrumental 'La villa strangiato' proficiently on drums 🤘🤘
John Petrucci (guitar) said he and Portnoy connected right away when they met in college... Portnoy introduced him (and bassist John Myung) to bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Fates Warning in the 80's. Portnoy was the active member of the band who promoted Dream Theater and kept the band organized, writing music & going on when few were interested in the band. In 1999, he & John Petrucci began producing Dream Theater's records, after frustration mounted w/ outside producers. Portnoy also collected and released demos and live recordings by Dream Theater separate from their catalog of music. He also put together musical projects like Transatlantic, and Liquid Tension Experiment.
However, by 2007 - 2009, Mike Portnoy had been working w/ Dream Theater for 2 decades; he admitted to becoming weary and wanted to explore other musical avenues, and played drums on the 2010 Avenged Sevenfold album 'Nightmare'... Portnoy decided to quit Dream Theater and began working w/ the band Adrenaline Mob, recording their 2012 album 'Omerta'... he quit that project, but started new ones - The Winery Dogs ( a rock trio), Flying Colors (w/ Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse), O.S.I. and the Neal Morse Band... (as well as new music by Transatlantic).
In 2017, Portnoy teamed up w/ former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian and recruited top-tier talent (vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, guitarist Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal and bassist Billy Sheehan) to form the prog band Sons of Apollo, which has 2 studio albums and 1 live record out now... He recently recorded drums for John Petrucci's instrumental solo album and a third Liquid Tension Experiment album. Portnoy even played live w/ bands like Twisted Sister, Fates Warning and Stone Sour... he revealed that his being diagnosed w/ O.C.D. kept his mind active constantly and that likely fueled his drive ( and scattered attention) to varied styles of music... (He wrote a Dream Theater song 'Constant motion' about his condition).
Mike Mangini is the current drummer of Dream Theater, a metal veteran, and he had taught at Breklee School of Music where the members of Dream Theater met around 1984/ '85. There is a divide amongst fans who is the better drummer, but Mangini has been invaluable to Dream Theater in the last decade plus...

The next Dream Theater song you should react to is Learning To Live. It's the best song from the Images And Words album IMO. Always love your reaction videos, 1st time commenting.

Back when this album was recorded, John was playing Ibanez guitars. A few years later he switched to Earnie Ball Music Man guitars. He has his own signature line, but they are not standard models with a different paint color or decal, they are engineered generation by generation, to be exactly what he needs to perform live, while maintaining the tone he has refined over the years.

The amazing thing about Dream Theater while original drummer, Mike Portnoy, was in the band was his ability to entertain the crowd live. Many drummers drum very well, but Portnoy was like having a second frontman behind the kit. And he always seems like he's having the best time of his life. Since he departed DT he plays in many bands: Sons of Apollo, the Neal Morse Band, Transatlantic, the Winery Dogs, Flying Colors and a few more things. How does he find the time and energy? Who knows? I just listen and enjoy. I'm glad he's been able to play with guitarist, John Petrucci, again in Liquid Tension Experiment and John's solo album. They work well together.

I met Portnoy once at a ''drum clinic'' in Montreal. Spoke to him a bit, asked him if they (DT) would do movie scores, and he said they'd love to if they were asked. Maybe one day, who knows.

Usually one member of the band writes the lyrics and the whole band composes the music together. This is the ONLY song all members have written the lyrics together :)

DT are experts in epic songs / concept albums. Try Scenes From A Memory, a 78 minutes epic song (a full album) that you should listen on one shot. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, a 41 minutes song in 8 sections. Octavarium a 24 minutes incredible song, and many others. Once you start listening to Dream Theater’s masterpieces, this will occupy your minds continually for months or years…

The drummer’s name is Mike Portnoy (my greatest hero lol). You also saw him last week playing with Liquid Tension Experiment live. DT’s guitarist is also LTE’s guitarist, John Petrucci.

One cool thing to do would be to listen to a Dream Theater song from a different point in their career. Both songs you have reacted to is from album Images and Words from 1992. Try and react to At Wit's End from album Distance Over Time from 2019. A heavy, proggy track that ends with a beatutiful soaring guitar solo. Three members are still the same as in 1992 (singer, basist and guitarist). The keyboardist joined in 1999 and the drummer joined in 2010. Exciting to see If you hear any major differences/big contrasts from these first two songs. Singer has lost a bit of his range Over the years but he is close to 60 years old now. Still has that beautiful tone and great vibrato. 👍
