Probably not gonna matter for such a small gate, but shouldn’t your diagonal brace run the other direction? Top of hinge side down to opposite corner is what I was taught. Looks fantastic though!! Can’t wait to come back to Bellingham/Ferndale.
No. it's taking the weight and distributing it back into the post, it's strong in compression, the other way would be strong in tension, and you would have to run a wire turnbuckle to keep it tensioned
