- La mamma morta (They killed my mother) is an aria from the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano. It is sung by the role of Maddalena di Coigny (soprano). . . This video is best viewed at 720p on a full screen. All lyrics are included in Italian and in English.
A very brief summary of the plot:
The story takes place during the French Revolution. The title of the opera is also the name of the main character, André Chénier, a poet and believer in love and freedom. The story opens at the château de Coigny where Maddalena, a countess, is having a party which Chénier attends. These are the two major roles.
The third major role is Gérard, a servant, who secretly loves Maddalena. Gérard later joins Robespierre's Reign of Terror. Eventually, Chénier and Maddalena fall in love. Gérard, who moves up in the ranks, has Chénier (who opposes the reign of terror) arrested but arranges for Maddalena to be spared. Unfortunately for Gérard, Maddalena chooses to die with Chénier rather than live without him. They are both sent to the guillotine.
The opera is obviously more complicated than this brief synopsis but this is the gist of it. "La mamma morta" is also sung by Maria Callas in the 1993 movie, "Philadelphia" with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The scene where Hanks listens to and interprets this aria is phenomenal and contributed to earning him an Oscar for his role in the movie.
My mother died 2 years ago and this aria captures my own grief and my sorrow for those who have died from this virus. But this aria, and the ethereal voice of Maria Callas gives me strength to keep going, keep loving, and not loss heart. Miss you mom, you are with me every day.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Your words touched me deeply. She will always be by your side..next to you
A mother is a mother, whatvever the age with got, she's still our mother and i know she's here with me, i pray for her, i think of her a lot, mom help me, protect me, i love you.
Sorry for your loss. But people die from the flu every year, this virus has been vastly exaggerated as part of agenda 2030 and the great reset "build back better"
@@joseph1845 Thx but she's died in 2019, before the covid, she was sick and tired and she was smoking since she was 16 years old, thx for your great word mr Butcher :)
I totally agree with you this song takes you to the bottom but at the same time ejects you to continues life lharder.
Maria Callas!! Her singing this aria in "Philadelphia" was the best part of that movie (even with Tom Hanks mumbling along with the area and crying so hard to show that he was "a real opera lover"! Guess Hollywood doesn't trust an American audience to appreciate a great operatic moment just by itself.
My all time favourite female aria.
I first heard this in Philadelphia starring Tom Hanks and cried my heart out there in the cinema.
My dad played opera to me early in my life and I've loved it ever since.
Pure emotion, pure sensitivity and you either love it or hate it.
And I'm PROUD to admit Opera is my favourite musical style above all others.
I would like to try to give you something: ruclips.net/video/oEcJysA7-QE/видео.html
Me too
Callas was the original diva notoriously difficult to work with but oh what a voice
This song ( from Philadelphia) is when I started appreciating opera, and bought the callas cd. This song should be heard by ALL.
Una Fortuna lacrima
@@kristinfrederix2924 una furtiva lagrima ?
Opera is very pure
This "song"? From Philadelphia"? Antoine Pirson, this is not a "song" but a Umberto Giordano's masterpiece, from Andrea Chénier... Sorry...

GOD I JUST WATCHED THE "PHILADELPHIA" ON ROKU AND THIS RECORD WAS PLAYED BY TOM HANKS AS DENZEL WASHINGTON WATCHED HIS REACTION...ONE OF THE SADEST MOMENTS IN THIS VERY SAD FILM...MAKES ME CRY EVERY TIME I SEE IT...
I cry each and every time I listen to it! Pure perfection!

C magnifique
Am not French but understood a few words - its just her voice - cest magnifique tres x
Que je comprend ...
This aria sung by Maria Callas is one of the most intense experiences in existence - but your superb video enhances it still further; I would not have deemed it possible! Thank you also for the subtitles elucidating Luigi Illica's marvellous libretto which inspired Giordano to attain the apex of his genius! (The other arias in "Andrea Chénier": "Un dì all'azzurro spazio", "Come un bel dì di maggio" and "Nemico della patria" are also absolutely splendid!)
Callas is divine. Simply a legend, nevertheless, Callas is the best soprano of the 20th Century.
And all the future centuries
So very true
Absolutely the best! I also love her singing Un Bel Di in Madama Butterfly. A legend
madam butterfly such a pure opera never been more pure then madam Butterly
Breathe taking. She is magnificent and the meaning of perfection
What a voice! It truly touches the soul. So tragic to learn how unhappy she was throughout most of her life.
3:40 just gets me everytime. Her voice makes me cry for a second.
In the top 5 best songs of all time of any type, such powerful emotion from a world class performer, such sadness in her voice proberbly mirroring her life
what an impressive expression of pure art. we need suffering in order to experience joy and love. we must embrace both in order to feel their intensity. thanks!
You are right🥲
Probably the greatest Masterpiece in music history. The text (libretto) is really beyond imagination.
One of the most beautiful songs ever! And Maria Callas is the best to sing it!😍🥹
this can not surpassed by any other soprano, this is perfection in every way ! bravo!!!
This song evokes such powerful imagery of the chaos during the French Revolution. If I close my eyes I can vividly see the flames burning down her home, I can see her watching in the shadows covered in mud & dirt from hiding in the vineyards or wooded area. I can hear the gun fire, screams, I can feel her surrounded in literal darkness, stars above in tattered clothes with a tear ,stained cheek. I can smell the gunpowder, iron, body odor & blood. Almost as if it were the actual sounds of the French Revolution. Such a colossally moving song that leaves you achingly frightened. Kudos. Btw the entire opera Andrea Chenier is on RUclips. The costumes, makeup, vocals & acting are incredibly intense! I urge fans of La Momma Morta & opera to check it out! There arr couple but the legit one has a thumbnail of the actresses in heavy white makeup with exaggerated wigs can't miss it!(sorry can't get the link atm)
most beautiful and moving piece of music and vocals
A Divine Love, then....thank you for your translation, & beautiful presentation!

Goddamn, Maria. Making me tear up like this.
The “tu non sei sola” always gets me.
What an interesting mix of French Revolution and modern images to accompany such a magnificent performance.
I have a physical and emotional reaction to Callas' voice. Her voice bursts with emotion and power that is so fat beyond anyone else I've ever heard. ❤
I too cry each time I hear this....no words, just tears and a soaring heart!
Goosebumps! Her finest role in my opinion.
Superb presentation, so informative! Thank you!
Just beautiful...and the artwork and scenery are sublime.
Thanks!
Victor SamudaHello! maybe you can help me with that wonderful scenery from minutes 2:30 with the creature and the girl, I think
I too found that an arresting image and wonder what it signifies...?
Scenary is from tne Divine comedy from Dante Alligueri.
There is nothing in the world more beautiful then this single aria
Takes my breath away.

Adamfulgence, that is such a grand video. I can`t even find words. Thank you.
I’m not devote but I imagine this is the closest we will get to an angelic voice.
fantastic, I have record with other singer, however it is not comparable. Maria Callas was unique in this role
Sublime rendering and admirable presentation of images.
Pure emotion. Maria is divine!
Lovely blending of one of Callas' greatest recordings/performances with images. Wonderful.
Simplemente maravillosa..¡¡
I does bring tears to my eyes... ow more than ever that I'm a Jesus Christ believer!! So beautiful!!
Don't need to know the lyrics to understand the pain, the fall and the raise!
God bless!
I saw Ms. Amara as Mimi (La Boheme) in Philadelphia's Academy of Music. It was in the mid 70's. I was most familiar with her Pagliaci recording with Corelli. Well, what a surprise the was. I always liked her voice, but, I was shocked at her tremendius expressiveness through tremendous access to shading, color and great ability to arch her legato phrases. So much of those attributes were not in as evident through recordings. Even naturally larger voices such as Tebaldi and Tucker were not fully served in recordings. Amara and a number of others in that period were spectacular exponents of fine vocal arts.
Grazie....semplicemente magnifico!
The imagery of this video is superbe! I wish to thank you for putting such time and effort in this beautiful work of Art! Gracias mil!
Thanks for your comment! I will also respond here to your second one. Thanks so much for recommending another aria. I will give it serious consideration. :-)) P.S. I'll leave more info on your channel.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful aria. It was featured in the movie "Philadelphia" in a scene where tears were difficult to hold back. The album of the full opera just became available through Arkiv Music, the Maria Callas version on two discs for $9.99, and needless to say, I ordered it this evening. Listening to your share has made my evening.
the lyrics are just beautiful :D
@revelrot I really appreciate your feedback!! I doubt everyone likes opera but to have you say that you "appreciate the art" when you see it and hear it is wonderful. I am gratified that someone can look at it that way. Thanks for your comment!
A lovely story and valuable life lesson sung to some of the most emotional music I have experienced. Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

Amazingly beautiful video for an amazingly beautiful, stirring song. Thank you for sharing!
Dear Eileen, I am very happy that your first opera video has the voice of the greatest artist of last century, Maria Callas!
And as always my compliments for a very personal work, and a difficult task: you've chosen an aria that -specially for people who are not 'into' opera- is emotionally tied with 'Philadelphia'. But with your images you've created a work completely of your own.
Now you should dare more in the field of opera, no doubt! Opera lovers wait!
I can't agree more with the above comments. The pictures match the mood of the aria perfectly! Absolutely wonderful job.
Which beautiful work. That it is original, instructive and pleasant to look. I appreciate this video a lot. BRAVO

Hermosas imágenes para acompañar esta bella aria. Gracias.
@b13ne Thanks Bruno! But, I'm not as confident as you are. I did try to stay away from the movie and focus on the story of the opera but it was hard given that I'm not an opera expert. Nevertheless, I'm glad I did it and I thank you (who does know about opera) for your kind words.
THANK YOU THANK YOU for this posting...the "about" helps me with understanding/appreciating opera more...Is it okay if I "fav" this on a list of opera music?
Maria Callas has the voice only given to angels . This aria is performed to perfection
Gesu, che Bello, che forte...
