I grew up in Milan, my father was a lyric tenor and he sang for thirty years in the choir of the Teatro alla Scala.
Even as a child in the 80s I was part of the children's choir, I met Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Placido Domimgo, Katia Ricciarelli, Franco Zeffirelli and many others.
I had the privilege of forming myself musically in an international and prestigious cultural context.
Of all musical genres, Opera is certainly one of those that has the greatest emotional impact on the public. I have seen friends who are always very cold and hard in life move to tears.
Maria Callas is a timeless myth, her voice is full of emotion, her defects have become merits due to her great, enormous expressive capacity.

Buddy Walkin At that time you were either a Callas, or a Tebaldi follower, how on earth one can possibly say that one is better than the other? It is of course a matter of personal choice. But even Callas admitted than Tebaldi had a better voice. Was Pavarotti better then Gigli or Caruso? I used to work in the restaurant. of the Hotel Continental in 1956 (sadly now converted in to something else) in Via Manzoni no more than 200 meters away from La Scala, after the performance quite a few of them used to come to dine in the restaurant, but unlike you I have never had the pleasure to even enter inside La Scala.

The problem with opera now is exactly what Maria predicted. It is in its dying throws if not already dead. So few genuine great singers, producers who are only interested in their own distorted view of how to present opera for their own egos. The only saving aspect is the handful of excellent conductors so concert performances are probably the way ahead provided there are enough talented singers to be found which is becoming more and more difficult.

This was one of her best recordings of an aria. Magnificent on almost every level.
Couldn't agree more, this one comes off very well indeed. The way the notes at the end of certain phrases seem to hang suspended in space, creates a tension and a plaintiveness not achieved by anyone else in quite the same way. And the powerful closing is the perfect emotional climax. Even Caniglia's performance of this piece, which is superb, cannot equal what Callas does with it in this recording.

I'm writing this as tears are streaming down my face from listening to La Divina sing Catalani. I am virtually transported to a different plane of existence... maybe it's heaven.

I heard her sing this aria in SF at the SF Civic Auditorium, later known as the bill Graham. I was at Berkeley so I got student tickets. How a gangly kid from Stockton became a fan I’ll never know but I had most of her Angel albums. Later I met her backstage at her farewell concert in Los Angeles.

Totally agree with you. She gave a dramatic touch to this aria. No other singer had her sense of drama. Maybe she didn't have the perfect voice, but she could make you cry with things like this like none else did it,or I think could do it. She was amazing.

First time I heard this was in the movie, Diva when I was 17 years old in the early 80s in the midst of the punk scene. It was sung by Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez. I love both versions, it always makes me choke up and my eyes start "leaking"!!

This is Maria Callas giving me a woman, not just a wonderful interpretation, which it is of course.
I feel that is what makes Maria Callas different from other great singers.
I grew up listening to La Callas, reading about her from the early 50s and early 60s. I agree with the other commenters, there will never be another Diva.

For the first time, I heard this aria, sung by Amira Willighagen. So, of course, I thought I'd see where she drew her inspiration from.
This is *phenomenally* sung. I've tried other pieces as sung by Maria Callas and never liked them much, for one reason or another, but this one is incredible and I'll definitely come back to it.
(Amira's version is gorgeous as well. But in an entirely different way and realm. For one thing, this is an entirely different age and technical ability.)
I am glad I can live in a world where I can experience both!
What she did with her voice is sublime beauty, so rich, so pure, and breathtaking,. I am so moved by this piece especially, each time hearing it, so lovely.

It's important to acknowledge the expert direction on the part of Tulio Serafin. I believe he understood Callas, possibly more than any other conductor. He could follow Callas, and I imagine the other artists he worked with, better than many other conductors, IMO. His sense of tempo was unsurpassed -- I believe he said "a tempo should never call attention to itself." This recording of "Ebben? Ne andro lontana" is on my short list of the most beautiful recordings of any kind, ever.

I agree. Maria Callas had one special element that is pervasive and brought her to the great heights that were hers: PERSONALITY.
Her personality was reflected in many ways. Such a voice would always be celebrated BUT so much more was in it. Her great knowledge of Music (requires time and work), her intimate knowledge of the characters' roles that brought about her strong impersonations, and also her understanding of the true character of Opera - sung theater, not just songs, so she acted, and I could go on and on. All in her revealed the magnificent way she looked and acted in what she did. A true artist, a true performer, a dedicated student, but above all a WOMAN.
Small correction, tho. No soprano has had a bigger voice on record. Maybe in an isolated register, but not across a three octave range! She recorded the biggest eb6 in history, her middle was on par with Flagstad and her contraltoish chest voice was exqusitely sonorous and deep.

The BBC has decreed in 2007, that Callas DaVina, is the GREATEST OF ALL TIME. What this means is that the Professional Global Operatic Community has found her to be the epitome of opera greatness, that will not be equaled, because she can not be equaled.

Credo che Catalani avrebbe sorriso se l'avesse sentita... per me é la più bella registrazione e la miglior resa canora di questa aria... non faccio nomi ma sò che era il cavallo di battaglia di due grandissimi soprano. Si mettano comunque l'anima in pace, Maria é ineguagliabile per potenza di suono, flessibilità, resa drammatica e colori I suoi pianissimi, il legato, le filature e le stupende messe di voce sono inimitabili.

This is an easy aria, but the phrasing is sublime, as always. Absolutely out of this world, nobody can sing like Maria Callas.
I love pretty much all genres of classical music, yet opera normally disagrees with me... Only!.. The voice and spirit of Maria Callas gets to me every time, and I weep whenever I hear her voice. She's a diamond among the most precious of stones!

"Mai piu, mai piu!" Only that very moment deserve to be studied by ALL the opera singers. She gave a dramatic meaning to this aria that some singers, like Netrebko nowadays, sing like screaming and, obviously, without understanding what is DRAMA.
Netrebko is overrated.
Everyone to his or her own taste. However, when they are simply lunatic, it is best to keep your impressions to yourself. Callas had her great moments to be sure but sang long after her peak, because she was a legendary draw. Netrebko has never sounded as if she were screaming to me, although to my ears Callas often did, especially in the later recordings, several of which I posses. Nettrbko may be overrated, that's true. There are several other sopranos just as good and a few of them are singing contemporaneously. Nevertheless, she has been at least as good as any other singer of her era and, with her maturing voice, has gone from coloratura roles to Tosca in a way that makes any fair and astute listener say that she IS a glorious Puccini singer at this stage of her career. Netrebko has never lacked for stage presence and dramatic interpretation. I'm sure you mean someone else.

I agree with what you are saying, except for the part that attacks Netrebko. You are harsh. All the sopranos of our time sure do something right to be where they are. All I'm saying is no negativity please, can we just praise what Callas did best?

IT's funny how detractors always seem to focus on the technical falibilites. And lord knows pushing the top and the bottom for dramatic effect was bound to take it's toll. But what these self same people never seem to recognise is that she had a flawless legato allied to perfect diction and a rare musical insight. Put it all together and you have this clip. Astounding that it was from the mid-sixties. Marvellous.
